Weekend Reading

"Daughter of the Pirate King" by Tricia Levenseller is a thrilling young adult novel that takes readers on a high seas adventure filled with pirates, intrigue, and a strong-willed heroine.
The story follows the daring and cunning Alosa, the daughter of the feared Pirate King. Alosa is sent on a mission to retrieve an ancient map that leads to a legendary treasure, but she deliberately allows herself to be captured by a rival crew led by the enigmatic Riden. As she infiltrates the enemy ship, Alosa faces not only physical challenges but also a growing attraction to Riden, which complicates her mission.
One of the book's standout qualities is its strong and dynamic protagonist, Alosa. She's a fierce and resourceful pirate who can hold her own in any situation. Her intelligence, combat skills, and witty banter make her a character that readers will root for from the very beginning. Alosa's determination to succeed in her mission, even at the risk of her own safety, makes her a refreshing addition to the world of young adult literature.
The romance between Alosa and Riden is a central aspect of the story, and it's handled with finesse. Their relationship is built on trust, respect, and a shared understanding of the pirate's life. It doesn't overshadow the main plot but adds an extra layer of complexity to the characters. Readers will find themselves invested in the emotional journey of these two strong-willed individuals.
While "Daughter of the Pirate King" excels in many areas, it's not without its flaws. The plot was predictable and the secondary characters, while intriguing, could have been further developed to add depth to the story.
Overall it was an enjoyable read, but I don't think I'll be continuing the series.
Have you read this one? What were your thoughts?

This week's Newsletter

I love when I get to add chapters that were scrapped. The writing process is a long and complicated one. Sometimes I have a plan, sometimes I see where the words take me, and sometimes nothing happens. Chapters like these end up in a folder, forgotten until they finally reach the light of day in our subscriber-only section.
Also, there are new coloring pages for Beautifully Broken. Do you like them? Should I keep going with the series or meh..spend the money elsewhere?

Bookish Fun

The next couple of Saturdays leading up to the release of Island of the Lost don't have too many updates as the ball is rolling and everything is in place. So I thought it might be fun to show some character inspiration and throw in a fun fact. This week's spotlight is Wednesday :)

Get to Know Me: My Book Shelf

I've had a variety of bookshelves over the years. When my dad unexpectedly moved in with us, I had to condense and adjust because my office moved into my bedroom...not ideal. But it sparked a fun DIY. I broke down one of my existing shelves and hung it on the wall. This was not perfect. I originally had longer shelves but one of the anchors slipped and I'm sure you can guess how that went. Needless to say, my room is crowded because I brought my second shelf back in here to (safely) hold the rest of my books. But these that are up here are my favorites.
Spot any on your shelf? Let me know In the comments.

Weekend Reading: What Lies Beyond the Veil

When it comes to picking up a new book, I often rely on recommendations from friends or intriguing cover art. That's how I stumbled upon "What Lies Beyond the Veil." Truthfully, I thought it was a YA book. It is not. It may be a slow burn, but man oh man, there are some references in there not meant for teens. It was delightful, to say the least. This is a book for adults who are ready to dive into a world that doesn't shy away from the complexities of life, love, and human nature. It's a book that challenges your preconceptions and leaves you thinking long after you've turned the last page.
"What Lies Beyond the Veil" is just the beginning of a larger series, and that's where things get even more exciting. While I thoroughly enjoyed my time with this book, I have to admit that committing to a five-book series right now feels like a substantial undertaking. But that's not to say I won't return to this world in the future.
The beauty of discovering a series is that you can savor it at your own pace. You can dip in and out of the world created by the author, taking breaks between books to savor each installment fully. It's like having a treasure trove of stories waiting for you whenever you're ready to dive back in.
Now, I'm curious to know if you've read "What Lies Beyond the Veil." If you have, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. Did it take you by surprise like it did for me? Were you intrigued by its willingness to explore mature themes? And if you haven't read it yet, does my review pique your interest?

Bonus Content

Don't get me wrong, I love every reader, ever follower, and every person who takes a chance to look at my content, but I have extra love for my subscribers. They let me sneak into their inboxes once a week and just talk. Ok...that sounded a little creepy but I swear it's all in good fun!
Being a subscriber comes with perks, like a free monthly ebook, discounts, and exclusive content. So far, it's heavy on the Neverland novels with a interest board, 3 deleted scenes, coloring pictures, and more.
Once Island of the Lost comes out, they'll have an exclusive epilogue too.
Emails go out (most) Sundays. The only time there's an extra if it's a release day.

Get to Know Me: Top 5 Reads

I might not do it as much as I used to, but I love to talk about books! Currently, these are. my top 5 this year:
Fourth Wing: I can't stop raving about this one. Love triangle, enemies to lovers, dragons, and so many fan theories!!!
Belladonna: Of the five...this one was the least spicy. I know it's there, but I'm pretty sure it's fade to black but the story didn't need it. It was so good! Say hello to Death and the only human he can touch. She doesn't die! (Established in chapter one so don't worry this isn't a spoiler). But their relationship does not start off on the best foot.
Love on the Brain: A cute easy rom-com, with spice, relatable humor, and just a bundle of cuteness.
Haunting Adeline: This is probably the darkest book on this list. If you haven't read it please check the CWs because some parts were hard for me to get through. That being said...holy ****
Kingdom of the Wicked: Again, another nonspicy book but the witchy lore was great, and the fact that each deadly sin has its own sexy devil...I loved this one. The rest...eh not so much.
What are one of your top reads this year?
