Book Review: 100 Days of Sunlight
“When life knocks you down…Get up.”
Abbie Emmons, 100 Days of Sunlight

Time for another book review, this one is my new favorite!
A little bit of backstory:
I read this book in a day. Yesterday. And I am in love!
This book had been on my TBR list for years. Abbie Emmons is a self-published author, and I have followed her YouTube channel for years. I love supporting fellow indie authors, and Abbie’s writing tips and programs are super beneficial. So I have really wanted to read one of her books.
I came across 100 Days of Sunlight in the library and felt my chest burst with excitement. There it was. I finally had my hands on a book I had been wanting to read for years. It’s always a great feeling when you get to check off a book from your list that wasn’t recently added. It’s even more gratifying when that book is better than you could have expected.
I’m not joking. This book made me cry. Literally.
The story:
So what is it about?
In the first chapter, we meet Tessa. Tessa was in a serious accident that left her temporarily blind and angry at the world. Then along comes Weston. Weston is an “obnoxious optimistic”. But there is so much more to him. He brings light to Tessa’s darkness in a way no one else can. He shows her there is so much more in the world than sight. As they grow closer, Tessa can’t image life without him. But Weston hasn’t told her everything. He has a past of his own, one that has left him broken, one that allowed him to truly understand Tessa and break down her walls. When Tessa’s sight returns, he has to make a decision. Disappear and leave Tessa’s world, “or overcome his fear of being seen.”
First off, there is so much more to this book than you would think at first glance. It’s about pain, brokenness, heartbreak, and anger. It’s about finding friendship, light in the darkness, and choosing the hard path because it’s the right thing to do.
Tessa is homeschooled, and as a homeschooler myself I loved it. Weston is a runner and a fighter, but he’s also a big brother. As the oldest in my family, I connected with his will to be strong for his brothers, to protect them. These characters are so utterly human they reflect parts of ourselves we may not know we were hiding.
As an ASL interpreter, I work with Deaf individuals and have other connections to the special needs communities. This book did a wonderful job representing people with handicaps by showing their strength, focusing not on what makes one different, but what makes someone special. It’s a very important lesson, especially when it comes to accessibility and simply human kindness. See the whole person.
This story is so simple that it allows the beauty and poetry of the writing to suck you in and take you places only the characters understand. The complexity of human emotion is felt through the love we have for others and the fear of being vulnerable.
I’m in a total book hangover, unable to separate my thoughts from the emotions and power of this story. I can’t wait to read the sequel.
Everyone should read this book.
Rating:
The author herself has rated her book as PG. I would agree. There is some language in the book, but the story is clean in all other respects. A little bit of kissing, but in a cute, romantic way where you couldn’t turn away.
Check out more about 100 Days of Sunlight here.
If you’ve read the book or have seen any of Abbie Emmon’s amazing writing videos, let us know what you think below! As always, more book recommendations are encouraged!
Until next time, my friends…

Recruited Book Cover Reveal
Every book cover tells a story.
People say not to judge a book by its cover, but we all do it. A good book cover hints at the story inside. It’s a picture that leads to a deeper story and creates an emotion to pull in your interest.
The T.S.O. book covers are projects I’ve spent lots of time and thought on. I first wanted to design these covers with a theme. The photos on the front covers are from specific scenes in each book. For me, these scenes are pivotal points in my characters’ development. Recruited’s cover is the same.
And it’s time to share a piece of that story with you.
Without further ado…

This summer, follow Agent-in-Training Tony Anderson as he journeys into the T.S.O.’s world. The Teen Spy Organization is facing danger from more sides than one, and Tony must decide to step up, join the fight, and learn who he is along the way.
Have you ever wondered what a spy training camp would look like? Learn what it means to be a spy in the third installment of the T.S.O. series, Recruited.

Book Review: Heist Society

Heist Society is the first book in its series, written by Ally Carter.
What’s it about: In the first of this series, we meet Katrina Bishop, who wants nothing but to leave the family business. She’s skilled at what she does, probably one of the best for her age, but she’s tired of a life of crime, scams, and heists. She manages for a while, scamming her way into a boarding school until an old friend pulls her back in.
Hale, a former co-conspirator of Kat’s needs her help. Her father has been blamed for stealing priceless art from a powerful mobster who will stop at nothing to get them back. To save her father’s life, Katarina reluctantly returns to her life of crime tasked with a mission deemed impossible.

What first caught my attention with this book was actually the author. When I was little and obsessed with secret agents and spies (Hence the T.S.O.) I found this book series that I couldn’t get enough of; The Gallagher Girls. The first book is I’d Tell You I Love You, But Then I’d Have to Kill You. These books are written by the same author! This other series is about a private school that prepares girls to become secret agents.
When I found Heist Society, I figured it would be fun, especially since it’s from a thief’s point of view rather than the stereotypical good guy.
My favorite part of this book was the heist. The genius and planning that has to go into coming up with that alone is crazy. To see it successfully written out is something I always love to see as a fellow writer.
The writing:
At first, I found the pace of this book a little slow going. It takes a minute to get caught up in the story and understand the characters’ backgrounds. That being said, once you get into the nitty-gritty of planning a heist and watching it play out, I couldn’t put the book down.
The characters:
The characters in this story have layers and layers to be uncovered. Hale was probably my favorite. He’s part of the family, but not part of the family, and there’s a lot to unpack with how he fits into the Bishop family. The Bishop family alone is full of characters that come in and out, each with their own set of skills.
Our main character, Katarina, has a lot to work through, and I do like to see her character arch come full circle. If anything, I think it would have been nice to see more of her before she left the family business and understand why she really left in the first place. She has her own family issues and tragedies, but there could have been more flushed out in her background.
In the end, this book was a very enjoyable read. Anyone around 12 and up would have fun with it, especially those readers who love a good heist or crime to solve. See if you can predict how they are going to do it before they do!
Until next time,
Happy reading!

3 Ways to Keep Writing While Going Back to School
I’m back everyone!
Summer was crazy, full of ups and downs and loads of adventure, but here we are!
I’m back at school and in the dorms.
I’ve previously talked about the importance of keeping a schedule and setting aside time to write. Read about it here. I wrote this post in 2020, and my life looks nothing like it did back then, so it’s time to reevaluate how I keep writing in my life now.
How to Have Time for School AND Writing.
To fill you in on what my schedule looks like now, I’m a full-time college student starting my senior year. I have a part-time job at a restaurant and spend as much time as possible in my internship for my career as an ASL/English Interpreter.
I’ll be honest, my writing has been put on the back burner for much of the past year and a half, and that’s okay. Everyone needs to take a break sometimes to focus on a different aspect of their life.

Here is how you can do the same:
Keep a schedule! This is what my post in 2020 mainly covered. Keeping a schedule is SO important, especially as a college student. Trying to balance classes, work, a social life, and downtime is difficult enough. Add in your job as an author and it’s just one more thing to juggle.I highly admire my mom when it comes to juggling. (Not that she can actually juggle. That I know of.) Taking care of five kids, homeschooling, teaching her own art classes, and managing a household on a daily basis is a lot. Yet she still does it while making time to talk to me each day and answer my endless phone calls while I’m at school. If you don’t put writing into your schedule, it isn’t going to happen. Read that again. If you don’t put writing into your schedule, it isn’t going to happen. If you can visually see in your calendar when you’re going to write or work on your stories, then it takes away the stress of feeling like you never have time for it. When you set aside that time, you are more likely to accomplish something than nothing at all.Plan out your process! After creating your schedule in a way that works for YOU, plan how you will use that time. Know what story you’re going to work on; plan if you’re going to edit, brainstorm, or write.Create a plan of action so you know what you need to do first, second, and last.By planning ahead how you will you use your writing time, you will spend less time sitting there thinking and more time actually doing.Hold yourself accountable! This is a difficult one for me because I always prioritize everything else before my writing.Set up a system to hold yourself accountable so you actually use that writing time for your books. This can look like another person checking in that you did what you said you would or a self-rewarding system to encourage yourself. Provide some sort of incentive. It can take a couple tries until you figure out what works for you (just like your schedule).Be FlexibleOkay, I know I said three ways to keep writing, but this is a bonus.Be flexible, go easy on yourself. If your schedule changes, don’t freak out. (I remind myself of this constantly.) If you don’t get to write when you planned to, that’s okay. Sometimes projects take longer than we hoped. Trust me, I know from experience. It’s much easier said than done when it comes to all of this, I know. It takes time to create what works for you and even more time to make it a habit.
My accountability:
This semester, my goal is to get back into my writing. I’ve set up my schedule and planned writing/editing sessions Mondays and Thursdays in the morning. (Hopefully, I’ll get a third day in every week, but we’ll start with two.)
In order to hold myself accountable, I’ve decided to share what I accomplish in that time with all of you. This is a way of being able to track what I’ve done and show myself (and you) that my scheduled writing time is happening and productive.
I encourage you to join my Facebook Writers group!
Here I will post about my writing sessions and progress. You are encouraged to do the same! Share what your writing schedule is and how your progress is going. Keep in mind this is not a place to self-advertise, but a group to support, encourage, and hold each other accountable in our writing journeys!

Keep a schedule!Plan out your process!Hold yourself accountable!Be flexible! The best of luck to all your endeavors as we head back to school!
