6 Things to Include in Your Author Bio
What’s up, readers?
Hope your week has been exciting and enjoyable. Maybe you got some writing done, maybe you finished a book, or maybe you finished binge watching an entire show on Netflix while eating three bowls of ice cream. Whatever your successes may be, here we are! We made it to the end of the week, and now it’s time to discuss the author bio, the short description in the back of a book that tells your readers a little bit about your life.
Writing an author bio can be a lot of fun, but it might seem a little daunting. There are so many interesting little facts about you that your readers would love to know! But you have to keep it short! Soooooo, here is my list of 6 things to think about and include in your author bio along with examples.
Say what books you’ve written. R.E. Klinzing is the author of the T.S.O. series and many future books.if they’re reading one book, they might like your other books too!If applicable, mention awards/titlesJohn Smith is the bestselling author of “Such a Such” and has won the Creative Writing Award of Creativity. If you’re a brand new author, don’t worry about this. But this is you, this shows people why you’re a credible author and why they should keep reading your books.Where are you from?R.E. Klinzing lives in Southern California.Who knows, maybe your neighbor will read your book!Give a fun fact or two about something in your life, incorporate it into another fact.R.E. Klinzing lives in Southern California with her family and pets. When she isn’t writing, she is enjoying outdoor activities or watching way too many crime shows with her sister.By saying something fun about yourself, your readers will see there’s more to you than just your books. It adds relatable layers to your character and gives insight into how you might have written your books or what inspired you.Describe your goal. Her goal is to ignite a love of learning in her readers and help writers pursue their dreams.now people know what pushes your to keep writing.Directions to learn more!Learn more about the author and her other stories at reklinzing.comDirect your readers to your website or social media for more information about you, your books, and your unique hobbies! So there you have it! Six things that are essential in a good author bio. Having at least two of these will make your readers feel more relatable to you. Remember, the point of this little snippet of your life is to let your readers something about you! Make it personal, make it fun, and make it unique! Talk about your chocolate obsession, your education, the tons of plants you care for, or the fun activities and groups you’re apart of!
Giving your readers a little bit of info about yourself in a fun and short way at the end of your story opens the doors to a personal and entertaining reading experience. Readers love behind the scenes content, and you are the creator of the worlds and characters they have fallen in love with. How much more personal can it get than finding a way to relate to your readers through your interests and experiences?
If you’re having trouble picking a fun fact or two about yourself, don’t fret! All those other facts you want the world to know can go on your website or your weekly Instagram posts. If you tell them everything at once, then there’s no reason for them to learn more, which is what you want them to do! Your website is where you should share all the behind the scenes and fun facts about who you are!
For those who have written or are writing more than one book, keep in mind that your author bios don’t have to be the same for every book! Each story brings out a different aspect of your imagination, and so should your author bio.
In case you’ve missed it, here’s my author bio found in the back of The Bayshire:
“R.E. Klinzing lives with her family in Southern California. Aside from writing, R.E. Klinzing is studying to be an ASL interpreter. The Bayshire: The Story Behind the Cover
Hey readers!
Welcome to the world of the Teen Spy Organization! The second book in the series, The Bayshire, was just released on June 8th! You can purchase it as an ebook or a paperback on Amazon! The ebook is also available at Barnes and Noble, Baker and Taylor, Scribd, and more!
Today I want to talk about the cover for the book.

I designed the cover myself in my front yard and on my computer. Designing the cover was a lot of fun!
For those who haven’t read The Bayshire yet, the image depicts a scene in the story. I chose a scene that I think shows the character’s arch and development in a really fun way. On the cover you see Agent Alexis Mills. My sister modeled for me in the front yard where I taped a sheet to the garage as a makeshift green screen, and the magnificence of modern technology allowed me to tweak the photo.
Using an awesome platform called Canva.com, I was able to design the cover. It took a while to make it look the way it does, but it was a very fun process!
A lot of people hire cover designers to create wonderful pieces of art. I had the privilege to learn how to design not only one, but two covers for my stories so far. I hope ya’ll enjoy the story and the cover as much as I enjoyed creating it.
Happy reading!

All in the Name of Research!
What’s up, readers!
Today we’re talking all about research! Now don’t get all disappointed here. This isn’t a school assignment, some science report, and anything like that. I’m talking about research for books! This is your writing research, because YES, writing involves some research! In fact, research for my books is my favorite type of research! And there is a LOT of it when it comes to creating a perfectly believable story. So, grab your pencils, your library card, or your computer, and let’s dive right into the fascinating world of writing research!
Now, what exactly do I mean by writing research? Well, it’s probably as simple as it sounds. Maybe while you were scrolling through your Pinterest feed, looking at writing memes, you saw that one meme that says “When your mom looks at your search history: Don’t worry, I’m not a serial killer. I’m just a writer”? That’s what we’re talking about here.
When you’re writing a story, you probably aren’t an expert on every single aspect of every tiny detail that goes into it. This is where your research comes in. Think of that one story you’ve read that captivated you so much you couldn’t sleep without finishing it. Chances are, there was something in that story where the author had to dig a little deeper into something in order to paint that scene in your head. A good story, no matter how other worldly the setting is, still has to rely on some basic facts. These are the facts that make your story believable, make the reader believe they are actually in it, and even feel like it’s happening to them, especially if your reader actually knows a little something about the topic. Now, research can consist of anything. And you find your sources just about anywhere. Before we get any further, I’ll give you some example of research I’ve done for my own books so you can see what I’m talking about.
I did a lot of research for The Bayshire. There are a lot of fight scenes in this book, and seeing how I don’t know any combat, I needed to do some research. I watched a lot of YouTube videos with people fighting and some basic self-defense techniques in order to have a better picture in my head about what I was describing. Something else I researched was traveling. The main character, Alexis, does a lot of traveling, so I made sure it took her the proper amount of time to travel based on whether she was flying or taking a train from one place to another. For Finding Doom, where a couple scenes take place in a prison, I was able to get some first-person insight from someone who could explain the proper setup and procedures to me in order to paint a more believable picture.
Research can be done in many ways. The internet will probably be your best friend these days, where you can research just about whatever you need to. But keep in mind that you can also reach out to people who might know more about something than you and be able to provide you with the information you’re looking for. This is also where your library card comes in, for those of us who still like paper books. Maybe you could find a book at your local library to help you out with your topic.
Research like this should be something you enjoy. Maybe you’ll end up like me and find yourself learning about things you never planned to, like studying dangerous chemicals and getting caught up in sun mutations of all things. And yes, that actually happened.
So, what are you waiting for? If you have something to research to make your story that much more amazing, start learning! You won’t regret it!

Book Review: Murder on the Orient Express
“I do not understand myself,” said Poirot. “I understand nothing at all, and, as you perceive, it worries me.”
Murder on the Orient Express, Agatha Christie
Murder on the Orient Express is a murder mystery by the famous novelist, Agatha Christie, published in 1934. This was the first novel by Agatha Christie that I’ve ever read, and I can’t wait to read more of her books!
So, let’s get to it! This book was given to me a while back, and I had never gotten around to actually reading it. On my last escapade away from home, I ended up watching the movie on the plane, without even realizing I owned the book! So, there was no way I couldn’t read it now! I have to say, the mystery would have been more difficult to solve if I didn’t know who the criminal was when I started reading the story. (Obviously).

The plot:
Alright everyone, this book takes place in a train, The Orient Express, in the middle of winter. *cough* That’s important! The story follows our very own Monsieur Hercule Poirot, the famous detective that Agatha Christie has featured in many famous stories. While traveling, Poirot ends up on the Orient Express with an odd combination of foreigners and travelers that seem to have no connection whatsoever.
First, the train gets stopped by a major snowdrift that blocks the tracks. Then, someone is killed. In the middle of the night, with the ring of a bell and a French remark uttered through the noisy silence, Poirot is unable to sleep. And the next morning, in the compartment beside him, a man that no one seems fond of, was stabbed to death. (A bit dark, but very necessary to paint the picture here.)
Hercule Poirot is asked to take on the case. With the help of a dear friend, a doctor, and some very interesting evidence and witness accounts, Poirot goes straight to work to uncover who killed the man and why.
The characters:
Our main character, detective Poirot, is unlike any other character. He is nonsensical and thinks outside the box, never revealing his own thoughts until the end. The case is what matters most to him, that and delivering justice in the most gentlemanly way possible. He seems to read the lies of others and find the truth between the pages, because the truth isn’t easy to find in a murder that leaves everyone speechless and conflicted.
All the characters in this story are well thought out, each with their own detailed background, diverse occupations, and firm beliefs. No one is who they seem to be, and knowing that the murderer is still on the train, everyone is a suspect.
The writing:
Agatha Christie is an amazing writer, possibly nowhere short of being brilliant with words and mystery. The story flows at a steady pace, where clues are uncovered as each person is interviewed. But the readers still seem to grasp at thin air to come up with a plausible guess as to who the killer really is. The story is written in such a way that it doesn’t feel long or boring, but it gives you the sense of entering an old, untimely story.
I would say this book is for fifteen and up. It includes vivid descriptions of death with dark backgrounds and some crude remarks. If you’re looking for a fun, seemingly impossible to solve murder, then this is the book for you. But don’t say I haven’t warned you. Everyone is a suspect, maybe even you.

Can A Teenager Really Publish a Book??
Alright everyone. This post is for all you minors out there. (And of course everyone else is still welcome.) For any kid who’s ever had a story wandering around in their head, who’s ever thought of writing a book. You’ve asked yourself the question; “Can I really write and publish a book? I’m not an adult!”
Well, let me stop you right there. YES, YOU CAN! I should know. I did it! There are a lot of teens who have published books.
I understand the thoughts going through your head. Don’t you have to be an adult to publish a book? No one will like my story. I won’t even know where to start. When I first decided I wanted to write a book, I didn’t even think about publishing. Not until I had my first draft done. I have always been an avid reader. I would wander the shelves in my school library, wondering if it was possible to one day write a book as good as the ones I stayed up all night reading. And then when I thought about publishing, everything got more intense. I was a writer. I was going to be an author, and I was bent of making that dream come true.
Here’s the thing, people. There is no law that says minors can’t publish a book. Therefore, no one can really stop you. Keep in mind, there are some self-publishing companies, and I’m sure publishing houses, that require the signature of a guardian in order to publish. But there are also many companies that do not.
Well, the simple answer to this question is yes. Even when others tell you a teenager can’t write a book, or say that you’re crazy, put your own goals first. The people saying you’re too young probably haven’t written a book. So who are they to crush your author dreams? There are millions of books with teenage protagonists, and these books are written by adults. So if an adult can write about a teenager, then a teenager can definitely write about a teenager. And anyone else for that matter. And if you’re worried about your story idea already being out there, let me ease your mind. Every story idea comes from some sort of inspiration, something you’ve seen, heard, or read before. But the story in your head is definitely unique, because no one can ever tell your story the way you want to; the way it NEEDS to be told.
If you are really thinking about writing a book, go for it! The first step to becoming an author is becoming a writer. So write! You can worry about editing, publishing, and marketing later. Just get your story onto paper first, and go from there.
If you have any questions whatsoever, put them in the comments below, or send me an email on the contact page.
Remember, anyone can be a writer, even a teenager. Age doesn’t matter when it comes to telling stories and inspiring other people. All it takes is a little imagination and determination. So if you really want to be an author, whether you already have a story written or just an idea in your head, believe you can do it. It’s not always going to be easy, but it will always be worth it in the end.
So start writing.
-R.E. Klinzing
If you really don’t think a minor can write a book still, check out mine. I started writing it when I was thirteen and published it when I was sixteen. Proof a teenager can write and publish a book:

The Unanswered Questions: Book Review
“The voice had a name…”
The Unanswered Questions, Lauren D. Fulter
Well, I think this is my first review on a self-published indie author like myself! Awesome! Just a quick congratulations to Lauren D. Fulter for publishing her very first book.
The Unanswered Questions by Lauren D. Fulter was published in December 2020, and I believe it’s the first in a series the author is working on. It is also the author’s debut novel, meaning her very first book. Very exciting. The story fits in the science fiction, post apocalyptic, adventure genres.

The story follows the perspective of a girl named Nikki, hundreds of years in the future. And when she first sees lights in the mountains, then meets some interesting characters from town, her entire world changes. Nikki and her new comrades partake on a dangerous journey, and what seems to be an impossible quest, in order to prove their innocence, save the world, and finally find some answers that could change the course of history. But it won’t be easy. And it definitely won’t be safe.
In The Unanswered Questions, the first thing that stood out to me was the characters. Nikki and her five companions are all so different, with unique personalities and quirks that bring the story to life. I’m not going to lie, the beginning of the book left me a bit confused at first. When it came to the plot, you don’t learn a lot of information about the characters or their past until you get through the first half of the book. As the story progressed, I got more pulled into the plot, wanting to know what was going to happen next as things started to click together.
This book keeps you guessing. Constantly. Hence, The Unanswered Questions. As the characters learn about this new reality they are faced with, and who each of them really are, more and more gets uncovered and even more questions arise. The suspense in the book was just right. Every time I started feeling like I was getting a bit too lost, Lauren dropped a huge plot twist or revealed some information that kept me from closing the book.
Lauren D. Fulter has a quirky, fun way of telling the story that is visible in her writing. Her dialogue is amazing and makes you feel like the characters are right there talking next to you.
I have to say, my favorite part of the book is definitely in the end. Everything comes together, and I felt satisfied with the amount of answers we finally got. And the absolutely lovable characters make it that much more worth it. I’m excited to see what happens in book 2.
One thing is for sure. There are definitely a LOT of Unanswered Questions.
If you want to find out more, I encourage you to check out Lauren D. Fulter’s website here. You can also find The Unanswered Questions at online bookstores like Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
Well everyone, happy reading!

Why do Writers Need to Take Breaks From Writing??
Hey everybody!
Some of you might know that I took a small trip last week, in which I could not write or edit at all. (That’s why there wasn’t a post last week.) Some people like to say that you know you’re a writer when you feel you have to write constantly. I can understand this. I get that feeling all the time, like your mind is never at rest because there are a million stories floating around inside. It felt a little odd to not be running story plots through my mind all day or have my fingers run across the keyboard like time was running out. But I want people to understand how taking breaks can also be extremely helpful! While I was distracted with other things on my trip, I found myself more focused and clear-headed when I came back to work on my projects.
Like anything else in life, breaks are important to reach your full potential! The human brain can’t work non-stop without re-energizing itself. And one way to do that is to step away from what you’re doing, like writing, and come back with a clearer head. Here is why breaks are important:
When we constantly think about something, we won’t always get our answers.
I know all of us writers do it. When we get excited about a story we’re working on, it can have a tendency to consume our every thought. When I am working on a specific story for weeks on end, the plot holes, dialogue opportunities, and every aspect of the story keep me from focusing on anything else. I lay in bed at night trying to fix plot holes instead of going to sleep. But overthinking things like this rarely gets me answers. If anything, it keeps me from thinking further outside the box like I need to. It’s when my mind is occupied with other things that the answers I’ve been looking for finally make it into the light.
By forcing ourselves to take a step back from the things that are constantly taking up brain space, we just might find our answers in the moments we least expect them. If we don’t give our mind the occasional break from writing or world-building, the answers we create for ourselves might not be the answers we need.
Keep in mind that breaks don’t have to be super long either. If you can’t figure out how to move forward with a project, maybe dealing with some writer’s block, step back from the computer for a few minutes. Grab a snack or go for a walk before returning to your desk. Do something physical to get the rest of your body pumping. Occasionally a break such as a small trip or few-day break from a project can be useful, but don’t force yourself not to write just because you want to take a break. Be strategic with them. Make them work for you, not the other way around.
I have to say; I am glad to be off break and back to writing. After taking a few days off, away from my computer and pile of notebooks, I could return with a clear head and a plan. The scenes I’ve been working on developing for weeks have been written and properly placed in the story line.
The bottom line is this. Taking breaks is important. Just don’t don’t take too many. Because then writing will never get done.
– R.E. Klinzing
P.S. Scrolling on Instagram or social media don’t count as an actual break. Just keep that in mind.

ProWritingAid and Why I Use It.
Every good writer knows that editing is a vital part in the book writing journey. It is something that can’t be overlooked. I have struggled with establishing my editing process for a very long time. I’m still figuring out how to go about it with every new book I write. My general editing process usually starts with reading through my manuscript on my own a few times. After that I have worked with my editor, focusing on the developmental aspect of editing. I have the different steps that we more or less follow, tweaking depending on the needs of the story. But after working with my editor, I have felt a little lost.
There are different types of editing. There is developmental editing, line editing, copyediting, and proofreading. They each deal with a different aspect of writing, such as the story components (developmental), to how things are worded in each line (line editing), and grammar and spelling. There are even formatting editors to help set up your final product.
I recently discovered this new editing program called ProWritingAid. And I love it! ProWritingAid is an editing software that is compatible with many platforms, including Office Word (which is what I currently use), Google docs, and even Scrivener. It even works with Word Press, and I used it when writing this post. When you are logged into their website, they also have an online writing/editing platform that you can use without downloading an add on to a writing software and a Chrome extension. But what exactly does it do?
ProWritingAid is a must have for writers/editors. It offers grammar checking, style checking, strengthening of word choice, and more. Unlike Grammarly, which I used to use, ProWritingAid offers suggestions for fixing certain errors instead of just pointing them out. For example, when it finds a sentence with passive voice, it often gives suggestions for how to reword the sentence in order to fix the problem. I am still fairly new to the program, but it has made line editing so much easier for me.
Understand, this program does not replace an editor. There are still a lot of benefits from having an editor. The human eye is going to catch things that even the editing software won’t. But it will make your editor’s job easier. By using ProWritingAid, if you have a line or copy editor work on your manuscript afterwards, there will be fewer errors for them to find. Which will hopefully make it cheaper on you as well.
Here is an example of what the software looks like on Office Word. This document is a sample letter I send to my beta readers:

Now, this software requires a purchase. There is a free version you can download on Google, which might help you decide if you really want it. There is a monthly, yearly, and lifetime subscription starting at $20.00. If you are interested, you can check out more at the Website here.
As a writer, I know spending money on recourses can be daunting and way too easy to do. With the new year, and hopefully some writing resolutions, maybe it’s time to treat yourself to a little something for your writing. So I encourage you to check out the free trial for ProWritingAid and try it out. It is extremely helpful and definitely worth it. ProWritingAid has saved me the hassle of worrying about how to self-edit and from straining my eyes for errors I don’t know to be looking for. I’m so thankful I’ve come across this software, and I hope you find it useful in your writing.
