Spine

Maybe this happens to you. You spend a little time looking in the mirror, and for once you've dug the spinach out of your teeth and plowed the cowlick into submission and you've found the shirt without the pizza sauce stains, and you say to yourself, "Hey, you know, all things considered, I don't look half bad."

And then you turn sideways. Oh, hello, gut. And is that really my nose? Tragically, the world sees us from this angle as well. You'd think we'd look at our profiles more often.

I am s...

Wonders: Another coffee joint and Wonder Woman

Tried a new (to us) coffee joint in North Park. I got an Android phone (the Motorola cliq), so wifi is no longer a big issue, but there're still things like table space and outlet availability and noise factors, and on those three, this joint failed. Unlikely to return. Cool building, though.

I came across this clip from a 1967 Wonder Woman TV pilot. It was produced by William Dozier, the guy who did the Batman TV show and Green Hornet. What comes across in this is his u...

Nautical notions

Hi. How you doing? I'm procrastinating. I'm going to procrastinate at you by posting some recent snaps from the neighborhood. I took these with my new phone. The only pics I ever shot with my old phone were of the floor of my car or the inside of my jeans pocket, so I never posted those.

This is a little coffee joint in Ocean Beach. I've been trying to come up with a word related to coffee with a prominent "R" sound so I can make some kind of piratical "arrr" pun, but I came up empty. Maybe yo...

chukka

A bullet-point list of general things that are/have been going on would be boring, so I'm not going to post such a list. I'm going to post a cannon-ball-boom list of things that are/have been going on instead.

BOOM! I just finished online traffic school. As a former professional courseware developer, I feel I am qualified to say that the course sucked. It was neither pedagogically sound nor particularly well produced. There were typos, quizzes in which the correct answer was not an option, irr...

LAST page

And the first draft of my book is done! I'm five months ahead of schedule, so I have some time to make it coherent and possibly even good. But for the next few weeks, I'm not going to even look at it.

Normally the completion of a book is followed by aimless melancholy, but I've got a freelance gig to work on next week that'll hopefully give me something to focus my creative energies on.

Whew. I am drained by happy.

Anniversary = 20

Twenty years ago tonight I borrowed my brother's car and took Lisa ( [info:] dustchick ) to an Italian restaurant in Santa Monica that was fancier even than T.G.I. Friday's. That was our first date of several thousand. It is a good life, and I am a lucky guy.

Chinatown at PodCastle

Chinatown, my take on the Han folk tale about the seven (or sometimes five) Chinese brothers, is up at PodCastle. It originally appeared in Polyphony 4, from the fine independent publisher, Wheatland Press.

Here at the coffee joint, they took away this picture of Audrey Hepburn but left in its place a bagel and lox plate. I miss Audrey, but it's a fair exchange and I'm not complaining.

Pie fight

I have entered the final battle sequence of the book in progress. I want it to be exciting and suspenseful and surprising without losing sight of the characters and emotional resonance and all. But right now it's playing out like a giant pie fight. And before you say it, no, it would not be totally cool to end this book with a giant pie fight. That's for my next book. The Giant Pie Fight. (No, seriously, I want to write a sequel to Kid vs. Squid that culminates in a cosmic competitive eating ...
