Thank you
I am overwhelmed by all the congratulations and enthusiasm and kind words yesterday. From the bottom of my ventricles, thank you, thank you, thank you.
But some of you punks made some ugly noises about Rush. And to you, I say:
Quick to judge
Quick to anger
Slow to understand
Ignorance and prejudice
And fear walk hand in hand...
And there follows a kick-ass bass solo.

New book deal!
Just got off the phone with my agent (the formidable Caitlin Blasdell) who has given me clearance to make the following announcement:
Rush is touring this summer and will be playing the Moving Pictures album in its entirety!!!! AW, YEAH, I AM SO THERE!!!!
In other news, she tells me that we have struck a deal with Patrick Nielsen Hayden of Tor Books for three novels based on my short story, The Osteomancer's Son.
I'm serious! About the Rush tour and the book deal!
The books were sold on proposal...

Beach, review, ARCs for librarians
Started the day with a breakfast burrito and a beach walk. Wrote a bunch. Soon, gonna pop open a beer and watch a Suns game. Life is good.
Very nice Kid vs. Squid review from a children's librarian.
Speaking of children's librarians, if you're a K-12 school librarian and want a Kid vs. Squid ARC, be one of the first such-type people to email me your contact info and an ARC I shall send: gregvan@gmail.com.

Reading at Mysterious Galaxy - May 25
Hey, if you're in or around San Diego, come on down to Mysterious Galaxy on May 25, 7:00PM, where I'll be reading from Kid vs. Squid with Megan Whalen Turner, Richard Harland, and Barrie Summy for the MG Summer Reading Gala.

My neighbors to the north
I was slightly annoyed that I got a book on interlibrary loan only to find out that my branch is closed for a month of recarpeting, so I had to pick up and drop off my book at the La Jolla branch. On the other hand, going to the La Jolla branch meant seals were adjacent.

I go a-walkin'
The weather's been crazy-good around here lately. Perfect for long, aimless walks.

Kirkus reviews Kid vs. Squid
Kirkus Reviews liked Kid vs. Squid. They didn't eviscerate me at all.
Highlights:
"Drawing together a memorable supporting cast that ranges from a half-human Atlantean princess to a genial shark-man ("Howdy-do. Swim with us to shore or we'll eat your legs"), van Eekhout chivvies the plot along at a lively pace to a hold-your-breath climax and a deftly choreographed resolution. He also leaves the main characters around for sequels — which in this case, at least, could be a Good Thing."

Kid vs. Squid, the song
This is the kind of cool thing that makes me giggle and squee with no regard for safety or propriety: Lisa Chaddock, a musician and reader, and Geoff Hanson wrote and recorded a Kid vs. Squid song. I think it's awesome, and you can listen to it here.

Updatery and pie
Heya. So here's what's been going on with me lately.
Been doing some freelance work that's taking longer than I expected, which is exactly as one would expect when doing freelance work.
Been revising the next middle-grade book. My deadline for that is end of April, which doesn't seem like an overabundance of time for me.
Some early reader response to Kid vs. Squid has started to come in. One review hasn't been posted publicly (and might never be), but it's from a kid reader, and she said she co...

With due respect to Michael Pollan
My problem is that I should be eating more like this guy when, really, I'd much rather eat this guy.
