Lessons
As I was putting laundry away yesterday I started thinking about small things I've learned over the course of my decades on this planet. There's this small lesson about energy, for instance. For months, my underwear drawer had been coming apart so that whenever I put away my t-shirts and boxer briefs, I had to be very careful when pulling out the drawer, lest the entire front come off in my hands. Every time I put away or retrieved underwear, I'd experience a tiny bit of stress, and that stre...

Thanks for the sympathy over my hard drive crash. I lost some music, some photos, and some work, but fortunately nothing critical that I wasn't able to rewrite quickly. In fact, the rewritten stuff is better than the lost stuff, so no tears and gobs of snot.
I'm about ready to send off a book proposal. The book's already under contract, but the contract stipulates a to-be-determined book. This means I've sold a book, but not necessarily this book. So it would behoove me to come up with some Pl...

About five minutes after posting my last LJ entry my lollipop started spinning and wouldn't stop spinning no matter how patient I was so I turned off my computer and then turned it on again only when it came on it didn't come all the way on in that instead of seeing my applications and folders and things I love like my Superman wallpaper all I got was this little grey Kafka-esque file folder with a flashing question mark.
Which means death.
Someday, hopefully a very long time from now, I'll be...

I don't even mind sharing my desk
Working on an October 1 deliverable. The stuff in the cup is a triple-shot Americano. It is my favorite office mate today. It is my personal assistant.

Blue Heaven video blog - clip 1 of maybe just 1
Sleeeeeep!! I need sleeeeeeep!
But I'm at the airport, waiting for the first leg of my flight to Blue Heaven (it's a novel workshop on Kelley's Island, Ohio).
Since I have an electrical outlet for my laptop machine, I've decided to video blog my entire Blue Heaven experience.
Or at least the part of it where I eat breakfast at the airport at five in the morning.

Signing in Ohio
Hey, if you're in or around Columbus, Ohio this Sunday, do consider coming on down to the Lennox Town Barnes and Noble for a signing event featuring Paolo Bacigalupi, Tobias Buckell, C.C. Finlay, Sandra McDonald, and me. It's sure to be a hoot. I will be dressed in a chain mail valkyrie bikini, if that's enticement.
Meet science fiction authors as they discuss and sign their recent works. Tobias Buckell, Paolo Bacigalupi, C.C. Finlay, Sandra McDonald and Greg van Eekhout will be here!
Sunday...

Square
Okay, quiet here, yes, because I am in a QUIET MOOD!
The final draft of the book that was once called Flotsam and is now called Kid vs. Squid has been turned in and now it goes to a copyeditor and the copyeditor goes scribble scribble on my manuscript and then I do stuff, but for now, I am done with the book.
I've seen sketches for the cover, and I think it's going to be really cool. There's a kid with a sword (it's not really a sword) and a very big squid.
And I'm working on other little thin...

Come sail away
In lieu of actual content, I post pictures of charming boats I've seen near Shelter Island lately, mostly while getting fish sandwiches. I don't really want to own a boat, but I want to ride on one, through the mouth of the harbor, out to the Islas Coronados, and then away and beyond.
I dream. I yearn.
For a hundred and some bucks I can take lessons on Mission Bay in a little aluminum-hulled sailboat. That's a start.
