(Excuse me while I put on my Dark Quest Promotional Hat)

Dark Quest Books is proud to announce the following new releases: From Palomino Press and acclaimed author, L. And from award-winning authors Joe Dever and John Grant, the long-awaited third volume of the Legends of Lone Wolf Omnibus series.

Rachel final mid-size

Rachel Griffin wants to know everything.

As a freshman at Roanoke Academy for the Sorcerous Arts, she has been granted to opportunity to study both mundane and magical subjects. But even her perfect recollection of every book she has ever read does not help her when she finds a strange statue in the forest-a statue of a woman with wings. Nowhere-neither in the arcane tomes of the Wise, nor in the dictionary and encyclopedia of the non-magic-using Unwary-can she find mention of such a creature. What could it be? And why are the statue's wings missing when she returns?

When someone tries to kill a fellow student, Rachel soon realizes that, in the same way her World of the Wise hides from mundane folk, there is another, more secret world hiding from everyone-which her perfect recall allows her to remember. Her need to know everything drives her to investigate. Rushing forward where others fear to tread, Rachel finds herself beset by wraiths, magical pranks, homework, a Raven said to bring the doom of worlds, love's first blush, and at least one fire-breathing teacher.

Curiosity might kill a cat, but nothing stops Rachel Griffin! The Unexpected

Overheard at the Wright Household

Juss: "It's a loophole of nature. It can't be a law of nature, or it wouldn't be a loophole."

Juss, who has been listening to the Ghosthunter books–which catagorize ghosts: "The average vampire loses its power in sunlight–because that is what happened to Dracula. But there aren't a lot of average vampires, oddly enough. Weaker vampires burn in the sunlight.

"And stronger vampires don't lose their power or burn in the sunlight.

"They sparkle."

Glimpses of Joy

Yesterday, I stood in a darkened room filled with sparkling lights and watched all four of my children playing together in a moonbouncy thing at a local place called Pump It Up.

Words cannot explain joy. They cannot capture those wordless moments. Watching all four children run around together, laughing and jumping, with the music blaring and the lights flashing, was one of those wordless moments.

Moments when you think 'this is what life is for.

Doxacon

Donna Farley, who gave the best lecture I've ever heard on "A Spell for the Refreshment of the Spirit", did a write up of Doxacon–the sf/religious convention held in Springfield, VA in late July. It is a lovely, poetic write-up. You can see it here:

http://storyspell.blogspot.ca/2013/08/a-gathering-of-generous-spirits-doxacon.html

Doxacon was one of the best conventions I have ever gone to. A wonderful mix of spiritual truth and science fiction and fantasy. I was greeted by a pastor's wife who had 'come out' of the Geek closet by putting on her dice earrings. It only got better from there.

Overheard at the Wright Household:

Me: "John, if there were a prize for 'most dramatic kid' we could so ace that."

John: "I don't know. The son of the evil banker in Despicable Me was pretty dramatic. And he had a really big gun."

Me:  "Jooooohn….he's not real?"

John: "I'm not entirely convinced Juss is real either."

Overheard at the Wright Household

Yesterday, on our walk back from the grocery store, John was discussing the steps in his journey from Sixties 'anything goes' morality to being a Catholic with the Talking Boys (and the Cherubim, but he wasn't paying attention. The Princess had stayed home.)

John: "…because I realized that once you give a girl your virginity, you can't get it back."

Juss: "Unless you ask her for it ba…"

Mommy leans over and quickly explains to Justinian what the word 'virgin' means.

Juss, deflated: "Oh."
