Sigh…
So, I commented on a Facebook post giving what I thought was a rather insightful analysis of the difference between how the two opposing sides saw the Chick-Fil-A events yesterday. In particular, I talked about how each side was not communicating, because they did not seem to understand the other sides's concerns.
And I got jumped all over by someone who insisted….that no one could possibly believe what I said the opposition believes. And was rude about it.
Sigh.
Here's what I said;
"The other really weird thing–as someone who reads the posts of friends on both sides of the issue–is how convinced both sides are that the other side is motivated by hate. The pro-gay marriage side thinks they are standing up for equality and that the other side is motivated by bigotry. Those showing support for Chick-Fil-A, including some non-Christians who were offended by behavior of a couple of mayors, think that they are standing up for the First Amendment, and in the case of the Christians, for their fellow Christians, and they are convinced that those on the other side are motivated by hatred of Christianity–and not by concern for gays.
I am puzzled as to why neither side believes the other when they say what their concern is. My guess as to why this is the case is that the issue the opposition is concerned about is of so little concern to each side that they cannot actually believe a person would be motivated by that issue. If they were a person who was concerned with the opposing issue, they would already be a member of the opposing party.
So, the pro-gay marriage guys can't believe that Christians would see the matter as an attack on Freedom of Speech…they think it is an excuse, and the Christians can't believe that the other side actually believes it is an issue of discriminiation. So they both seem to spend a lot of time showing solidarity to their side and posting hateful things about the other side. I have not yet seen any posts, however, that were anti-gay…the Christians don't seem to think this is about gays…they think it is about Liberals. I have seen a lot of anti-Christian posts, however."
Thank you and thank you.
First, if any of those of you who donated money yesterday so we could go to Chick-Fil-A are reading this: thank you, thank you, thank you.
Second…I seem to be terrible at writing thank you notes…the physical kind. I have some around from three years ago that have never been delivered, and many others that I just never got around to writing. This is particularly bad, because I live Southish, where Southern hospitality includes thank you cards. (We sendom sent them or got them in NY.) So, I fear my friends think me unbelievably crass and rude.
Very sorry! The gratitude is there in my heart!
But, whether or not it makes up for dissing my friends with no cards, there is one kind of thanking I've been reasonably good at, and that is thanking teachers and bus drivers.
Every Christmas and end of the year, I make sure all the teachers and bus drivers get a little gift, if only flowers or cookies. This may sound simple, but keep in mind, several of my children are in special ed programs…that means two or three teachers per class and a driver and an attendent per bus. And none of them used to go to the same school…occasionally, I had five bus people to give gifts to and seven or eight teachers. More now that they've reached middle school and high school!
That is a lot of cookies.
Ping-Ping helped this year. She made presents for her teachers herself.
Today is the last day of Summer School. It is the Cherubim's last day with two children he has been in classes with since Kindergarten. They are going to one middle school. He is going to another. It is also the last day with the Summer School teacher, who also happened to be his second and third grade teacher. We will miss them.
There is a teacher, two assistants, and a bus driver. Flowers were given to all.

Chick-Fil-A Follow-up
While I was there, a woman told me, "Next week the gays and lesbians are going to come by and kiss."
I shrugged and said, "As long as they buy food."
But what I was thinking was: "Is that just for same-sex couples? Or can my husband and I come by and make-out, too?"
Adventures at Chick-Fil-A
So, I had not intended to go to Chick-Fil-A today, both because I ws out of money (just redeemed the car from new-transmission hock) and because I hate waiting in line.
But two kind folks donated money on John's blog just to pay for Chick-fil-A for the family.
So, now we are the proud owners of a slew of nuggets and fries and some ice cream shakes.
I waited until 3:00, after the lunch rush, but the lines were still amazing. The cars left Fast Food Heaven and were backed up on the access road. The line inside went twice around the place.
When I finally got up to the counter, I thanked them for their support of my son's summer school (this Chick-Fil-A had donated free ice cream coupons to ever child in the program.)

MASTER OF HEATHCREST HALL by Galen Beckett
Just finished MASTER OF HEATHCREST HALL
Absolutely delightful!
This is the final book in the series that starts with THE MAGICIANS AND MRS. QUENT and includes THE HOUSE ON DURROW STREET. The story takes place in Altaria, an alternate Britain from a world where day and night are not of the same length. The story is in part Regency Manner with magic, Gothic, reveolutionary story, and Lovecraftian. The author handles each separate mood masterfully.
It is primarily intrigue and mystery. The romance angle is very, very light.
Strongly recommend it to those who wish their Jane Austin had more Lovecraft in it.

Is it just me…
Or does anyone else find the involvement of the Muppets and Sesame Street Characters in the culture war disturbing?

Princess and the Stars
Last night, I was chatting with the princess about movies she had seen, when she asked if stars were really the spirits of the dead.
She was serious.
I had tried to explain about stars once before. This time I had John do it with videos from the internet. Still not sure she understood most of it though.
Kind of freaky.
She also wants to know what destroyed the dinosaurs and where people come from. She thinks both "evolution" and "made by God" are laughable explanations. In China, they believe a goddess made people.

Vacation and Dinosaurs
I am on vacation this week. Instead of writing, I am praying and reading books…though today I played LIFE with the talking boys.
The Cherubim asked to go back to Boy Scouts this morning. I had to tell him we couldn't do that. He just walked by carrying for large dinosaurs and smiling.
