Gettin’ Cosy: The Late Night Pyjama Edit

(Images shot at the beautiful Mitre hotel in Hampton Court, by the ever talented Beatrice Granados)What happens when you watch a certain music video one too many times- fall in love with the styling, spaghetti and romantic train rides and then metaphorically dream of travelling down The Mall on a double bed?

…Well not a lot, except a real hankering to reshuffle my pyjama drawer (otherwise known as the humble pile underneath my pillow) and surf the ‘net to recreate some of the finest pyjama/suiting combinations this side of Wee Willy Winkie- which I guess, in reality is the most achievable of the bunch really…

And I’ve definitely got a bit of a pyjama problem. Give me traditional ticking, toothpaste stripes and button up collars for the week and blousy nightdresses and linens for the aspirational long weekends and slow Sundays Nora Ephron films are made of (I mean, have you seen Sally’s bed in When Harry Met Sally)?!

(Pyjamas: Sarah Brown London, Socks: & Other Stories, Sunglasses: Monki)

Whether that’s pairing a silk polka dot duo with some cream linen and my finest socks, to pulling out the pearls (or beads, ssh) with some true Coastal Grandfather tribute pyjamas that have my heart- I’ve always seen nightwear as a bit of an extension of how I like to dress during the day (and yes, sometimes that means old t-shirts and shorts with elastic long gone too). But for the most part, I like to have fun with it.

Like I do dressing in any form, fun and functionality are paramount (and cosiness, obviously)- so with that I thought I’d share a few of my favourite pairs, and a little nod to some late night talking- because what’s fun if not spaghetti in a fancy hotel room in silky jammies?

(Jacket: Alexa Chung, Shirt: Mango, Trousers: Mango, Shoes: Gola)

Shot at one of my favourite London hotels, The Mitre (which I cannot recommend highly enough after staying here a couple of years back); their Catherine Parr suite felt like the perfect backdrop for some larger-than-life flouncing, and left me all googly eyed for pink striped headboards, bathroom bathtubs (an absolute essential for my fantasy dream bathroom) and the ultimate complimentary cornflower blue and pink red tones.

(Pyjamas: Sleepy Doe, Socks: & Other Stories, Sunglasses: Kate Spade)

(Pyjamas: C/O Karen Mabon, Vest: Colourful Standard via Ruskin Clothing)

With these Breakfast Food pyjamas from Karen Mabon providing the ultimate injection of joy whether you’re a pastry queen or cereal cheerleader; I’m constantly vowed by her incredible prints and designs (plus she’s just released a new children’s range too- which is just as adorable as you’d expect).

Anyway- I’ll save myself from talking about nightwear all day- but if you’re after an extended and more thorough run down of some of my other favourite pyjama brands out there, I put together this post which is a pretty concise guide for all of your sleepwear needs too- enjoy and happy snoozing!

Postcards from Paris

Seeing as it had been several years since I’d last visited the city of lights, I’m sure you can imagine that I got a bit snap happy when I went over there last week (put it this way, there was a lot of ‘un, deux, trois- FROMAGE!’ from me)…

Having just got back from Menorca, it felt very surreal to be zipping off again (not to mention the mum guilt, but that’s definitely one for another day). Despite that, there’s only so much excitement about crusty baguettes, fresh pastries and the most perfect accent that can be contained- so it’s safe to say I was pretty excited indeed.

Heading over with Longchamp to celebrate their newest ‘Les Filles’ campaign (which you can have a nosey at here; it’s a Wes Anderson friendship inspired dream)- we made the most of our 48 hours in the city with dinner at a magical hidden French artists apartment, lunch at the iconic Rose Bakery and exploring landmarks such as the Opera Garnier, which was every bit as beautiful as you might imagine.

With our little Parisian team consisting of Sarah, Nimi and Manon– it was so lovely to explore the city and learn more about the brand with the loveliest group of women. Having been a huge fan of Longchamp for as long as I can remember (I feel like their Le Pliage bag lives in my mind rent free); learning more about their family run ethics and sustainability practises made me admire them even more (from using leather offcuts in new designs and all of their leather coming as byproducts of the meat industry, to name a couple)- it feels like a huge privilege to learn about a brand you admire, and know they’re thinking of the things you are too.

Anyway- I’m going to keep this a little shorter and diary like today. I know I’m on the brink of a big ol’ heart to heart, but today I thought I’d just bring you on a whistle stop visit to Paris and share some photos I’ve taken that I don’t want to gather too much digital dust. I’ve also scanned in a handful of gorgeous recommendations given to us from the Paris Longchamp team, so you can bookmark these for any future visits too!

Escape to Menorca

(ad- press stay) Last week, as summer began to draw to a close and September crept onto the horizon- I packed up my summer pieces (and dusted off a few that hadn’t seen the sunshine yet this year) and headed to the beautiful island of Menorca. Sistering Mallorca and Ibiza, it was the pull of the hazy end of summer sunshine, the warm ocean and thought of sandy toes in hot sand all before summer takes its final bow this year.

And it’s been a long while since I’ve visited Menorca. Having last come to the island when I was about 8 and had a deep love of performing the Ketchup Song dance routine to anyone who would sit and listen; my experience this time round was a little more grown up- much thanks to Villa Le Blanc Grand Meliá, a hotel perched by the crystal clear Mediterranean seas of Santo Tomás Beach- and arguably one of the most special places I’ve ever been lucky enough to stay.

I mean, it doesn’t take longer than a quick scroll on their Instagram to tell you how beautiful this place is; but like most online vs. real life experiences- seeing it with your own eyes is another kind of special…

With it’s white-washed walls and architecture that feels sympathetic with the landscape; whether that’s the earthy tones and curved arches or natural materials; the theme of this hotel is detail, and there isn’t a single detail that has been forgotten (it’s genuinely impressive).

With every bedroom boasting marshmallow like beds, private balconies (and often the addition of sun-loungers, a tub, pool or sun lounger (!)- it’s the kind of hotel that you could quite happily stay in bed all day in; if it wasn’t for the pull of the beach on your doorstep, one of two pools (with the rooftop one boasting some very brilliant tanning and book-reading spots and downstairs being the perfect spot for some pool side lunchtime pizza fresh from the stone oven)- plus, the offer of organised boat trips (a Mamma Mia dream) and it being a short drive from Mahon too.

The hotel is also wonderfully child friendly too; with a children’s pool, kids club (children over 5 can go ‘alone’ as there is always an adult working there to supervise- but younger children need to have guardian/parental supervision) and endless food options (with the hotel being able to cater to specific requests if they have a particular favourite too).

There are also three beautiful restaurants at the hotel; CRU which focusses on raw food, NIVI (our absolute favourite which has the best of everything; salads, pizzas, grilled meats, paella and everything in between)- and local gem S’Amarador- one of the most delicious seafood restaurants with produce sourced locally (and every bit as fresh and delicious as you might imagine)- and means you never have to go far for an incredibly special meal (you could probably keep your slippers on)!

On top of everything- and if that isn’t enough- there’s also a big focus on sustainability throughout the hotel; aiming to achieve complete carbon neutrality (which you can read more about here)– making this hotel truly is the Ms. World of places to stay (is there anything she can’t do?).

So, if you’re looking to book an unforgettable stay that will be worth every penny and moment- bookmark this for your next summer holiday- I promise you won’t regret it (I’m already planning a return with Little A and I know he’ll love it just as much as me)…

My Summer Morning Skincare Essentials

*features affiliate links and press samplesLike making time for a bowl of Crunchy Nut, putting my contacts in and making the bed all nice for when I get in it again later- doing my skincare every morning is pretty much a non-negotiable when it comes to getting ready in the morning.

It sets me up for the day; and on days where I don’t have time for a full face of make up, or have had a bit of a long ol’ night; it’s the small ritual of taking a few minutes to wash my face and pop on a few lotions and potions which seem to have a real power of making me feel human again (yes, I did just say lotions and potions- I am 90 years old).

Anyway- as with make-up, when the weather changes and things warm up a little, my skincare shifts slightly; making way for products that can offer a little more glow, protect a little more from the sun (although always SPF, kids) and give my face a little bit more of a drink when things get a bit dehydrated. So! I thought I’d share a handful of products I’ve been using non stop over the last couple of months- fully establishing themselves as fully fledged members of my summer skincare essentials…

The Cleanser: BeautyPie Plantastic Apricot Butter Cleansing Balm

Okay not only does this smell like summer breakfasts in the garden and apricot Petit Filous; but it’s without a doubt my favourite cleanser morning or night. It gets rid of absolutely everything (including stubborn eye make up) and makes my skin feel silky smooth without feeling oily at all. The perfect starter for a quick freshen up with a scent to match.

The Mist: Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Hydrating Face Mist

This feels like one of my more ‘luxury’ beauty products, but after cleansing this does an amazing job at rehydrating and freshening up my face before applying my serums (and I’m no expert but apparently it’s better to apply serums/moisturiser onto slightly damp skin?) Anyway! It’s also amazing to have in your bag throughout the day to add a bit of extra hydration and glow when things might start drying out, and very tactfully does everything very lightly so you never look damp or sweaty, which is very pleasant indeed.

The Serums: Fresh Vitamin Nectar Glow Juice Serum / Typology Acide Hyaluronique & Vitamin C

Tried and tested, these serums from Fresh and Typology deliver serious glow. With Fresh’s inspired by ‘cold pressed juice’ (really, say no more) it leaves skin energised and hydrated- with Typology’s Acide Hyaluronique notching up the hydration and smoothness too (I also l o v e their Vitamin C serum for added radiance and use this on rotation with the Fresh one).

The Moisturisers: Weleda Skin Food Light / Sunday Riley C.E.O Vitamin C Rich Hydration Cream

At the moment the two moisturisers I have on rotation are Weleda Skin Food Light (I am head over heels for their ‘Rich’ version, but this is a great lighter alternative when it’s hot and you need something that doesn’t feel too heavy), and Sunday Riley’s C.E.O Vitamin C Rich Hydration Cream which is an absolute dream for hydrating, brightening and adding visible glow which is always needed first thing for yours truly.

The SPF: Elemis Daily Defence Shield SPF 30

Ah, the dream SPF! The cherry on any skincare cake- and this one is the perfect end to any skincare routine. It’s not too thick, absorbs really quickly (which makes make up application on top a breeze) and doesn’t feel cakey in any way. As much as I love the smothered-suncream-on-holiday feel (and smell), this feels a hundred times lighter and makes applying SPF under make up as easy as brushing your teeth, so there’s no need to forget folks.

Lunch in London : 6 New Favourite Spots

Since trying to work more remotely in London over the last few weeks, I’ve been gradually ticking off a few places on my seemingly endlessly unticked ‘to visit’ list. Whether it’s suggesting somewhere for a meeting, indulging in something more than a cuppa during some overdue laptop time (not every lunchtime involved burrata, I promise) or just grabbing a coveted sandwich to go- here are a handful of my favourite places to have lunch in London (and I promise you don’t need a two week ahead booking for all of them)… For Delicious Italian: Brutto

Okay, I’ll start with the one you *will* need a booking for. And not just any kind of booking- a set your alarms Glastonbury style one, but I promise it’ll be worth it. As far as I know, tables are released every Wednesday at 9:30am for the next 14 days, so if you have a date in mind- this is the best way to do it (typing this, it sounds like a literally mad thing to do for pasta and the state of getting a table but I don’t make the rules and getting one for lunch is a lot easier too). Anyway- once you’ve exhausted your fastest finger first booking and finally make it- it’s bloody delicious. It’s no frills, buzzy and does the most beautiful Tuscan inspired food.

At night it feels like walking into a proper New York eatery, with it’s white table cloths- tables for two overlooking the restaurant, a busy bar with solo diners tucking into steaming bowls of pasta and couples cosied up against the checked bistro curtains. It’s a slice of heaven tucked into the beds of Clerkenwell’s busy streets, and if you’re after mouth watering ragu, dough cuddles and ‘ugly but good’ (their words, not mine) chocolate and hazelnut cookies, look no further.

For Main Character Energy: Café Deco

Café Deco in Bloomsbury is the kind of place that makes you feel like you can pull out a book and read solo. Here you are that sophisticated person when you eat lunch. Not only is the food delicious, light and fresh (the menu changes weekly and yet every week I seem to want everything which would be the only problem when dining solo); everyone is lovely and unpretentious too so you can fully embrace that main character energy (plus they have window bar seating so it’s ideal for people watching).

For Exceptional Sandwiches: Sons & Daughters

If you’re after an exceptional sandwich (and not close to Marylebone’s Paul Rothe & Son); it has to be Sons & Daughters in Coal Drops Yard. I never thought I’d become someone reporting on a god tier egg mayonnaise sandwich, but if you want to taste it; it’s here (put it this way, it has truffle crisps in it). Great for a sandwich that’ll truly fill you up on the go (these are doorstop sandwiches if ever there was such a thing); and my mouth is watering just thinking of it.

For Very Hip Working Lunch: The Standard / Isla

I’m often around Kings Cross wondering where to park up with my laptop and eat, and every time The Standard comes up trumps. Not only can you get on with emails when eating burrata and small plates (which will absolutely have you wondering ‘who on earth do I think I am??’) but the interiors are beautiful, and there’s outdoor seating too for those gorgeous summer afternoons (the perfect way to wrap up a hard day of working and eating cheese, right?)

For a Very Cool Lunch: Cafe Cecilia

Is it cool to say somewhere is cool? Gah! Who knows, but Café Cecilia is cool. It’s the kind of place you see on the Instagram feeds of all of the trendy people you follow and then immediately have to book to absorb some of that even if you’re not quite sure if you like natural wine or artichoke. Fortunately even if you don’t like those things, the menu is pretty unfussy, does seasonal simplicity exceedingly well and does the most special bread ever in their Guinness offering. The breakfast menu also looks pretty sensational, and it’s absolutely not style over substance.

For A Failsafe Lunch: Albie at The Hoxton, Southwark

Southwark is one of those areas that I never really know what to do with myself in. There’s a few brilliant M&S’s to go which do great sandwiches, but in terms of parking up somewhere and enjoying something delicious I’ve always been a bit unsure. But! Lo and behold, my favourite hotel chain, The Hoxton, save the day again. With The Hoxton being one of *the* places to work with your laptop, they offer table service to their lobby and working spaces, meaning you can grab something light (or bigger) from your portable desk and not have to lift a finger. Their burrata, salmon and small plates are bloody delicious; and they also do a failsafe brekkie too- top marks.

My Summer Wardrobe Essentials

*features affiliate links throughoutAdmittedly year on year my summer wardrobe doesn’t hugely deviate from my ultimate Donna in Mamma Mia ambitions; white blousy linens with Mr Darcy-esque sleeves and a good solid pair of dungarees (and high waisted shorts for anything over 24 degrees)…

My summer clothes live in a nice just-about-does-up zip-lock bag for about half of the year in the loft, and when the grand ‘changeover’ comes the failsafe recipe resumes.

But this year, the recipe has changed a tiny bit. A few ingredients have been added and I’ve noticed a real pattern of the things I’ve been going to on rotation, and the pieces I’ve been pulling out for a variety of occasions. Part of me wonders whether it’s me trying to stretch that comfort zone a bit after losing my style a little through pregnancy and trying to regain it a bit; but I thought I’d share the things that have been seeing me through the sunnier days and have actually been out of my wardrobe more than they’ve been in it…

  The Railroad Stripe

This year, I’ve fallen head over heels for a traditional Hickory/Railroad stripe. After exhausting my Christy Dawn dunga’s last year, I recently added the perfect pair of high waisted striped jeans from Seventy + Mochi to my wardrobe and they’re the perfect summer alternative to plain blue wash denim and go with absolutely everything. From blouses, t-shirts and my trust Will jacket (which is my go-to); these jeans have become a firm summer fixture, for tree climbing and everything in-between.

(styled with old Topshop blouse and Boden clogs)

The Basket bag

I’ve used this bag so much this year it’s poor handle has already come off (if I know anything it’s how to show a bag a good time), but year on year a basket bag has been my summer bag of choice. Whether that’s something smaller for an evening out, or more structured for days where I’m travelling about with the kitchen sink; there’s something really effortless and summery (and, Birkin-like) about the illusion of ‘just throwing it all into a basket’. Even cooler if there’s the tip of a baguette poking out and not a packet of Water Wipes but you can’t win ‘em all…

!function(d,s,id){
var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? 'http' : 'https';

The Crochet Knit

If there’s one way of doing knitwear from June onwards, it’s with a cool crochet cardigan (well ventilated and resembles the cloth on the back of your nana’s sofa? Win win)! I’ve been loving vintage-inspired boxy shirt styles, be it one like this Free People style, or a bit of colour from Baum und Pferdgarten– and they look great thrown over a bikini or vest too.

(styled with YSE trousers, ACNE sunglasses and Saltwater sandals)

The White Dress

Bowed sleeves, a billowing skirt and the most dreamy apple-pie lattice bust (which I’m pleased to announce has to be a thing)- it must be the dream summer dress! There are few dresses Free People don’t get right, and when it comes to the perfect white or cream summer dress (which is about as essential as a white t-shirt IMO), this one ticks all of the boxes. It’s wearable enough to throw on with sandals during the day, but would look stunning with a red lip and strappy heel in the evening too.

!function(d,s,id){
var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? 'http' : 'https';

The Suit

Okay, okay so a three piece suit probably shouldn’t be in anyone’s summer essentials unless you’re a permanent Peaky Blinders cast member or Mick Jagger BUT hear me out on this. Since picking this vintage number up at Portobello a few months ago- weirdly, I’ve worn it more times than some jeans in my wardrobe and it continues to be one of the most versatile things I own. Having the option to style up the trousers with a great blouse or t-shirt with high-tops, or pair the waistcoat and trousers solo- it’s been amazing for work events or days in London where I want to feel a bit more put together. The jacket and trousers work so well without the waistcoat too, so I pretty much have three hardworking pieces to pull out whenever I need them. Being a wool blend- this is definitely a rainy-cold summer day essential BUT an amazing linen or cotton suit would be so perfect, and I’ve seen some pretty epic ones floating around on Rouje and Etsy.

(styled with Carel shoes and Madam Popoff sunglasses)

The Vintage Dress

I think it goes without saying that my love for a vintage dress all year round is pretty necessary; but this floral special from Laura von Behr stands up for the perfect occasion dress. Be it wedding season, birthday dinners or even a nice evening out during a hen; there’s very little a great cut vintage frock won’t see you through for- and I know I’ll be wearing this way into autumn and beyond too.

!function(d,s,id){
var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? 'http' : 'https';
if(!d.getElementById(id)) {

The Statement Sunnies

When in doubt, just pull out a whopper of a pair of shades. On days where I can’t even think about what’s going on below my chin and it might be likely that I’ve just kept my pyjamas on- a pair of big, seventies sunnnies can really put in a good shift pulling things together (or making you look a little eccentric, but that’s never a bad thing either). One of my favourite pairs this year was from Madam Popoff Vintage for a tenner, so they really don’t need to cost an arm and a leg- but I’ve seen some amazing ones on ASOS– and they’re the easiest way of adding some life into outfits too.

  The Slinky Co-Ord

Finally, a little bit like the hardworking three piece, the co-ord puts in a lot of the summer graft, and this silky floral set from Reformation is an absolute dream. I wore it out during a hen party recently and it felt like the perfect sassy but comfortable get up (especially for someone less than au fait with a midi skirt and crop top). I love it styled with a tied up cardigan and like to imagine when I’m wearing it that I’m on holiday in the French Countryside, slinking to my cheese-laden picnic with Marianne Faithfull very candidly playing out loud in the background…

The Mothers Meeting Series: My Postnatal Experience

I’ve had this post sitting in my drafts for as long as I can remember; hovering over the publish button again and again- forever unsure of what the real point of posting it might be. Is it a cathartic exercise? Am I just having a waffle?

Seeing ‘content appropriate’ days like International day of the Midwife and Maternal Mental Health Week come and go made me think if I wasn’t going to write anything about things then, would I ever?

But those times, and the stories I saw online made me think a lot about my experience after birth, and the times since- and actually as long as I have maternal mental health; this matters- and also, if one person finds a small bit of comfort in this during a 3am feed (or even tries to read this and just uses the light from their phone to keep them awake when a small person needs them)- then I’ve done my job.

This post was originally going to be called ‘what happened after the jacket potato’, as I know I touched on the magic of the postnatal jacket potato being a perk of a prolonged hospital stay, but refrained for anyone not completely up to speed (you can read my birth story here, if you’d like).

Anyway- I guess I wanted to write a post that I know I would have liked to read in those hazy post birth days. The days where you expect to be wrapped up in a cosy safe bubble of freshly washed muslins, homemade and hand delivered lasagnes and visitors and flowers- which is brilliant if you have, and sometimes feels a little bit unexpected when things don’t pan out that way.

I think there’s a lot of pressure for a gorgeous bubble-like experience after birth, and for me; I felt enormous guilt that I didn’t experience that immediately. Okay my birth had looked different to the one I’d perhaps imagined, but I hadn’t even considered how varied the postnatal experience could be too. Perhaps this was a huge oversight on my part, but I think I was so swept up in the fact I hadn’t changed a nappy since my Tiny Tears demanded it of me or ever had to prepare a bottle to consider what might happen beyond getting home; whenever that might be.

Up until the birth itself I could have put money on the fact I’d be home that evening, maybe the next evening at a push- because that’s what happens isn’t it? I’d never considered that my overnight bag would need to be repacked up to 8 times, ending up filled with panic-bought Sainsbury’s pants in whatever size they had and the same clothes again and again- and honestly,  I don’t think I quite realised what a profound effect staying in hospital had on me until recently.

I remember in the weeks after coming out- several times saying to Joe, ‘I think I’m going to ask about some help’. And like getting my nails done, shaving my legs and sorting out my underwear drawer; it became a task I just couldn’t find time for- but unlike hairy pins or bras that didn’t fit this was my mental health. After scrolling through my phone recently to find a photo for ‘Interntional day of the Midwife’, I welled up seeing pictures from our first few days in hospital.

The overwhelm of being alone when you have no idea what you’re doing; wondering how to harvest colostrum and thinking why you didn’t start weeks before- to being readmitted after 4 days of being in, having one evening at home- only to spend another 4 in hospital when you thought you might be able to get used to being at home. And the milk coming in- THE MILK. Being readmitted into hospital when your milk comes in, as well as juggling jaundice and hypertension made me think I might genuinely have been losing my marbles at one point.

I’d heard about preeclampsia, but nobody had mentioned post eclampsia and hypertension. I spent hours digging into Google to find out how I could lower blood pressure overnight (tip: Dr. Liv realised taking out your contact lenses won’t lower it, guys)- and it was in those days following the birth I felt I’d been ever so slightly robbed of the baby bubble and the gentle entrance we’d so anticipated.

But I know we were lucky. We had support, and care, and were checked in on, and I know so many other brilliant women that had impossibly challenging situations after birth too- it’s so much more common than I could have anticipated; but goodness I just wish our NCT class could have touched on those days following too. The heady magic mixed with the mighty overwhelm that might rear it’s head too. The awareness of knowing how normal it is to be in hospital for a little while to help iron out any early day bumps, and how common all of these things are. How it’s okay to feel the loneliness, even with a network; the exhaustion of 2am feeds and the guilt for finding it difficult when you don’t have a difficult baby. It’s the weight of when someone says ‘this is supposed to be the most magical time’ when you’ve had rolling weeks of challenges and doctors calls and pharmacy visits; and the guilt of wondering why this magical time feels hard because you have the most magical small precious bean who you love more than anything and are so, so lucky to have. So lucky. It’s because things can be hard- life is hard. The juggle; christ the juggle. It’s hard. It won’t always be, but it is and can be- and that’s okay.

As silly as it sounds, at the time of feeling this last year I felt like the first woman in the world to be going through these things. It was only afterwards, chatting with friends who already had children; did I realise that so many have had experiences not so dissimilar themselves.

Motherhood is the single most special thing that’s happened to me; but it’s also like learning a brand new job on the day you start. It’s moving into accounting when you’ve never seen numbers before, heading up a kitchen when you’ve never so much as made a slice of toast. It’s a lot; but it’s possible and gets easier each day. The challenges change and evolve with time, but like a job you’ve been doing for years, you feel confident in your experience- to the point soon you’re pretty irreplaceable at the role, which is saying something indeed.

The (Mini) La Jolla Guide

It wouldn’t feel like a proper Liv-style holiday without attempting to scramble around and share my favourite places even if we didn’t fully scratch the surface of the never-ending list of sunshine delights San Diego (namely La Jolla) has to offer…

Despite a few obstacles, we still managed a handful of unforgettable sunsets, some delicious brunches and ‘who lives in a house like this!?’ neighbourhood perusals which meant although our stay wasn’t nearly long enough, was the perfect flavour of what a beautiful part of the west coast this really is.

Anyway- waffling aside, I thought I’d share a handful of my favourite spots (and a few we didn’t quite get around to visiting, but come recommended by my resident family who truly are the experts, which matters way more anyway)…

For breath taking sundowners…

Windansea beach: We were incredibly lucky to be staying pretty much on the actual sand of Windansea beach, and whilst I’m sure I’d be more successful trying to surf from my bed at home (the waves here are very much for the seasoned surfer)- the beach itself and the views it boasts are well worth the visit alone. I’ve never seen more of a watercolour worthy view, and I’ve truly got the photos to prove it.

Children’s Pool beach / La Jolla Cove: If you want to gawp at seals cosying up on the shoreline, both spots are must visits. My inner Attenborough was having a total field day, and there’s nothing like seeing these creatures in their natural habitat.

Starting the day right…

Sugar & Scribe: Ridiculously tasty brunch offering, with an exceptional sweet selection. The waffles and lemon pancakes and out of this world (and naturally come adorned with tiny flowers and lots of prettiness), but check out the cakes and cookies selection inside too.

Harry’s: For ultimate American diner fare, Harry’s is the joint (did I just say joint? Oh god I think I did). Bagels, pancakes and the like and lots of coffee.

Busy Bee’s Bagel Bakery: If Busy Bee’s could kindly open a bagel shop at the end of my road I would be eternally grateful. The most delicious fresh bagels, cakes and muffins with pretty much every filling you could dream of- the only way to start the day.

Also!

For lunch with a view: Caroline’s Café

The best pastries: Wayfayer

Breakfast in a veeeery cool lookin’ spot: Morning Glory

  Dinner spots…

Los Dos Pedros: According to my family who are the ones to know for a great recommendation, the best tacos come from small hole in the wall spots, and Los dos Pedros is one of the best. Don’t expect glamour but expect good.

El Pescador: For delicious eat-in seafood and tacos, note down El Pescador for some mouth watering deliciousness.

…obviously there’s also an In ‘n’ Out burger too which is a perfectly perfect dinner option too.

  Other gems…

Warwick’s: A complete institution and the country’s oldest family owned bookshop, Warwick’s is possibly the only place to go to get your next literary fix and I could have quite happily spent hours in here.

Humphrey’s By The Bay: Although San Diego has its fair share of great gig spots, we managed to catch King Gizzard at Humphrey’s and it was the perfect outdoor water spot to see the sun go down and enjoy some great music too.

Birch Aquarium: Having a toddler, an aquarium is always top of my list for a good educational-cum-sensory experience and much like the zoo, San Diego has a pretty special offering.

I know this is relatively short and sweet, but I wanted to note down a couple of favourites! I know I’ve barely scratched the surface (hence keeping it to La Jolla over the whole of San Diego)- but I know I’ll be grateful to have a little note of these for my next trip!

How To Travel Long Haul With A Baby

One of the things I was most apprehensive about before our trip to the states was navigating the 11-hour flight with a baby (or ever-so-nearly-toddler)…

As a recovering nervous flyer, my anxiety had ever so subtly crept back in over the last couple of years of not travelling; so plotting a trip halfway across the world was one thing, doing it after a pandemic was another and making sure Arlo was happy, contented and entertained for that was another biggie (my jiggly nervous legs being another thing, but thankfully I didn’t have much time to think about those)! How would we last the eleven hours?! I know how lucky we are to have been able to squeeze in such a special trip away, so I didn’t want the worry of the journey to gobble up the excitement in the process.

I’m sure most eventualities went through my head, but thankfully- after taking to Instagram; I was met with plenty of wisdom, comfort and reassurance from you all, so it felt only right to bookmark it here permanently for reference and try and share any tips we picked up along the way. Also; I must also stress at this point- having done the journey, can confirm that the anticipation was far worse than the journey itself.

Although I had grand plans of getting to the airport, cruising through passport control, having a leisurely lunch and then letting Arlo burn off some steam before we boarded- none of that went to plan and it was still fine! We ate lunch in the check-in queue due to delays and pretty much had to rush straight to boarding- and still, it wasn’t terrible, I promise!

One of the things I feel most grateful for since having an online community, are the moments when wonderful people step in to help and share advice- so hopefully if you’re about to head away with a tiny person, know a) it’ll be okay and b) if it’s a bit tricky, it won’t be forever and you’ll have a holiday at the other end (and if anyone seems cross at any crying or fidgeting I try and remember it’s on them and not me, they’re only little after all)! Anyway- here are some of the things that made things easier for us!

Snacks, snacks, snacks etc. etc.

I think the most resounding piece of advice was pack snacks. All of them. And then a couple more once you think you have enough. Pack favourites (Apple biscotti anyone?) and then new discoveries too. Going long haul it’s pretty tricky to get baby friendly food once you’re on the plane, so going armed with snacks, a couple of solid ‘meal’ pouches (I additionally took a couple of Mamamade snacks preheated with me for the airport) was a godsend because you really can’t have enough options.

In terms of feeding, we were also recommended to give a bottle/breast during take-off and landing to help with the pressure on his ears, which was also great to know. I also had some spare dummies in case too!

In the bag…

In terms of on board packing, we took Arlo’s typical changing bag (with a few extra changes thrown in) and then a magic bag for Arlo which was armed with toys/entertainment for him.

Changing:

As well as all of our normal changing garb, we packed a couple of extra changes of clothes for him (including a ‘day outfit’ and then a sleepsuit for ease/comfort), as well as an extra jumper and socks, and then a change of clothes for me too (in case of any accidents/spillages- you know the drill). We also added in Milton wipes which are a godsend for surfaces and when things inevitably fall on the floor over the journey.

Arlo’s bag:

I also made up a little backpack for Arlo, which was separate to the bits I needed for changing and to hand, to keep him occupied for the flight. This included everything from a couple of favourite books, a couple of new ones (based on things he likes), a couple of new small toys (a few people said magnetic toys are great) and some baby headphones for the in-flight TV. The real champion though, as recommended kindly to us- were some pompoms and an empty water bottle- which piqued Arlo’s interest for a good hour, which was nothing short of a miracle. We picked up the pompoms (as well as stickers, pipe cleaners and post it notes) from The Works- and all provided lots of amusement during the trip (especially as they weren’t things he’d really played with until the journey either).

  On the box…

The night before we left for the airport, as I was packing- I realised we didn’t have an iPad and panicked that I’d failed at organised parenting and I’d have a completely restless baby for the whole of the flight. Alas! My phone did the job, and using Sky Go, Netflix and BBC iPlayer- we downloaded a roster of Arlo’s favourite films and TV shows to watch on the plane which wouldn’t require internet (which makes me sound about 100 but I was impressed ok). These included Pip and Posy, The Wiggles, Mr Tumble and Paddington (obviously)- which were amazing to have to fall back on.

Baby transport!

In terms of what we took to get about; I packed Arlo’s sling in the changing bag and we used his travel pram (the YoYo) for the whole trip, which was perfect! I was a bit worried he wouldn’t nap in it as we’ve always used his Bugaboo when at home, but after using it a couple of days prior to going away to make sure he was happy, knew we’d be fine and loved the fact we could take it on the plane with us too (the bag meant we could also throw in a couple of extra nappies/the sling if things didn’t squeeze in hand luggage also).

FROW Seats…

We were very fortunate that because we booked quite early with British Airways we were able to select our seats, and opted for the front row which allowed us a little extra legroom/floor space with Arlo, and also meant we had the option of the bassinet too (which kind of acts like a car seat for bigger babies, but they have more of a ‘cot’ for tiny infants too). This was so handy when it came to his nap time and if you’re doing an overnight flight which syncs in with their bedtime- although it can’t be used during turbulence (which we very much learnt on the way home)… Saying that- if you can’t blag it on the frow, aisle seats are great too as you can hop up easily without feeling like you’re bothering anybody (although I do like the charm of letting Arlo look out the plane window- so I guess it’s different strokes for different folks and all that)!

A couple of extra tips I loved!

I’ve tried to keep this kind of short, but I thought I’d add in a couple of extra tips people mentioned which I thought would be worth knowing too!

As far as I know, you can pre-order nappies and certain bits from Boots to collect at the airport which can save packing space (but means you would have to then carry them the other side)- good to know though!Another tip we kept in mind was that for the main cases to use packing cubes, so that when we arrived we could pull out Arlo’s bits really easily- be it nappies and creams, nightwear, or anything else- without having to turn everything upside down. Finally, one very lovely and organised lady also said that she made Ziploc bags to take on the plane for the people directly around her containing a note saying ‘this is my first flight’ and some sweets, which if you have time, could be a nice idea! Equally, I don’t think you should have to apologise for a tiny person being fidgety/tearful but there’s never any harm in being friendly to those you’ll be spending the next 11 hours with either!

And that’s it! Someone also reminded me that believe it or not, they also have babies in other countries and the US; so they will have everything you need there too! Don’t fret if you don’t have 300 nappies, run out of Water Wipes and squeeze the last drop out of the favourite pouch on the plane because there will be things there too. Most importantly, have the best time and enjoy making special memories wherever you’re going!
