A Trip to Aller Dorset…

  (ad/press trip)I will begin this post by saying- I am not really an outdoorsy person.To those that know me, this will need no explanation or even declaring out loud. I spoke on this weeks podcast about having discovered hooded coats (guys- have you HEARD!) and have recently acquired a pair of wellies (which is impressive that I’ve gone 3 years with a toddler without any, maybe I’m more savvy than I realise!) but by and large, I am categorically what I’d call, indoorsy.

When I was dating and ‘on the apps’- seeing people on hikes, skiing and cycling not only slightly intimidated me but made me think we really need more indoorsy people! More cosy sitting! More gentle hikes up and down the stairs from cloud-like-cushioned sofa to cinnamon bun bed! I do not own proper activewear or anything North Face/practical (if you can excuse the solo pair of leggings I wear probably once a quarter)- although to my immense pride I have camped (properly camped! Not even in a nice tepee with toilets- I promise) on numerous occasions, did like it and do enjoy nature and being outside (which might sound contradictory, but I think there’s a distinct difference between being outdoorsy and taking great joy in nature and being in the outdoors).

Anyway! This is where I want to introduce you to the absolute bucolic heaven that is Aller Dorset. Having been invited there last week with Pink City Prints, to celebrate their new summer collection- I was giddy to finally get a peek into their beautiful hideaways, nestled deep in the Dorchester countryside and tucked away across beautiful farmland- and thankfully, there’s nothing apart from its dreamy location (and the tempting option of dinner over a firepit and wild lake swimming) that requires you to be a particularly outdoorsy kind of girl either- which works perfectly for me.

 

 

And there’s something very unpretentious and laid back about these beautiful Shepherd’s huts that make for the perfect mid-summer stay away. Despite the interiors being the stuff of dreams (and the kind of stunning set-ups you’d see filling your feed on Instagram), although expertly curated it feels considered and wonderfully inspiring (I’m pretty sure I took photos of nearly every corner and angle). With Matilda Goad, By Alice and Hot Pottery all making familiar appearances (some of the pieces you see in your cabin you can buy on their website– including the heavenly HEADBOARDS)- they all have a really homely feel, with hosts Cat and Ant going over and above to make your stay completely wonderful.

 

 

Marrying a gentle rustic experience with the comforts of home that make everything feel like true luxury; there are king sized beds opposite floor to ceiling windows with views of the vast green farmland, a fire pit for cooking your hamper of fresh local produce for dinner (or breakfast!) and the most inviting bath for a soak under the stars by fairy lights- which is completely magic. And if you ask me, there’s something about just looking up at the sky as the sun goes down whilst in the bath that is the kind of outdoorsy I could absolutely get used to.

The Fringe of It is back, baby!

…after 4 long years, we’re here and we’ve missed you! 

Happy Tuesday lovely people! I’m beginning the day with a bit of an exciting post, because if you need something silly, lighthearted and a bit of fun to keep you company this morning (with a tonne of excellent *can I say that??* recommendations) then, dear reader- you have come to the right place!

If you’re a little late to the party (which is fine, it’s normally us)- 6 years ago my friend and fellow superstar content creator Charlotte Jacklin and I began a podcast called ‘The Fringe of It’. A bi-weekly (now weekly!) podcast where we both sat down, mug of tea in hand and set the world to rights about the things shaping our lives. Whether that’s a deep dive into Telly Talk and the best on the box, a heart to heart on work woes, friendships or wanting to change the world (it’s not just Almost Famous at the centre of our universe, promise) or just a big DMC about navigating our late twenties and early thirties- we covered some serious ground. If you want to hit up the archive, it’s all here!

Anyway, after taking a four year hiatus (ahem) after putting out a whopping 59 episodes (deep breaths! deep breaths!)- which covered everything from friendships in your twenties, overcoming comparison, women’s health, the intimidating-art of managing money, getting involved with politics and more TV and laughter than you could shake your remote at when it’s run out of batteries- we are over the moon to be back nattering, laughing and connecting with a brilliant community of like-minded nana’s- all collectively navigating our way through the wins and the wobbles of millennial life.

The new season kicks off with a mammoth edition of Telly Talk, where we pick our favourite TV and films from the past 4 years. Easy, right!? We also welcome in two shiny new features, dip our hands into the bulging postbag, and tease what you can expect to hear over the next few months.

The Spring ’24 Playlist

  Picture this; you’ve just finished work early on a Wednesday afternoon. It’s one of the first balmy evenings of the year, and although it’s not quite ‘pub garden’ and spilling onto the pavements in full gusto weather yet, it’s the kind of evening where you can walk to the station or tram stop, jacket in hand and know it will be light when you’re cooking your dinner when you get home and looking out of the kitchen window. You know you can start getting away with putting your washing on the line (and entering ‘my towels have turned to cardboard and I couldn’t be more glad for it’ season) – and perhaps, if you’re like me, you might start tidying up your ankles and toes- as they’re finally released into the wild; sandals et al!

Of course- I couldn’t be talking about anything other than the arrival (and soon to be departure) of spring! And! The quarterly share of the songs that have been soundtracking trips to garden centres, morning errand runs, afternoons tidying up the garden and the first evenings of the year with the back door open…

I’d like to say it’s a big ol’ picnic of songs, but it’s more like a lazy Susan, leaning heavily on a good couple of months listening to the new Adrianne Lenker record (and seeing her at The Barbican which was magic), but I promise if you’ve given it a listen you’ll understand! There were also new albums from Maggie Rogers, Lucy Rose and The Lemon Twigs which made the season change from March all the sunnier, and an excellent TV soundtrack from ‘One Day’ which threw a lot of old classics back into the mix too. 24 Hours in the Cotswolds

  (ad/press trip)This time last week, in the midst of a week of blissful sunshine which felt like the first proper taste of British summertime, I was invited for an evening in the Cotswolds with If Only If (the most beautiful nightwear brand, who I’ll get to in a moment) and Sand and Stone Escapes; home to some of the U.K’s cosiest chocolate-box cottages and holiday escapes- for what can only be described as the late-spring equivalent to a Cameron Diaz in The Holiday moment (and all in the name of work!? I BEG YOUR PARDON).

Even after 15 years of tapping away giddily online, I still pinch myself that overnight trips like this are part of my job. To have the opportunity to really discover a brand close up, talk to the creative mind behind it (hello, Emily!) and experience (and therefore hopefully recommend) somewhere lovely to bookmark and share, feels like it categorically shouldn’t be called work at all- and is definitely one of the very special parts of doing what I do.

 

 

 

Now, if you’ve visited the Cotswolds before, you’ll know that aiming to cover much ground in 24 hours is a little ambitious, and an escape to the countryside is certainly sweeter when you’re not rushing about- so an evening cosied up in Lower Slaughter felt like a really beautiful place to start. We arrived in time for lunch at The Fox Inn Broadwell, which was everything you’d hope for a pub lunch and more. Put it this way- anywhere that does classic dishes well gets my vote, and serving everything from prawns with lemon in a dimpled beer glass, crisp buttermilk fried chicken and very, very good burgers are the pillars of a great lunch for me.

 

 

 

I’d say ‘there’s something about the Cotswolds that feels like climbing into every pastoral novel you’ve ever read’- but it’s not something, it’s everything. By 4pm alone I’d seen three people comfortably set up outside, painting at leisure and a couple picnicking next to the river as the late afternoon sun got lower and the stream rolled by next to them- it’s like the place just knows what it has to do to completely woo you and have you reaching for your nightdress ready for dinner…

…which is funny because after a wander outside our cottage (which was 3 The Square, and the most perfect little bolthole in the most stunning setting- with the delights that are Carrie and Charlotte)- it was time for dinner, and to pull on this beauty of a nightdress from If Only If, which feels too beautiful for bed (but I can also attest to the fact they make for the comfiest and most stunning nightwear too, having worn them from pregnancy until now)! There’s something so elegant about their pieces and the way they move and feel (which is a huge testament to owner Emily’s careful eye for fabric choices) and all of which have subtle feminine nods to the past- all whilst feeling completely wearable and versatile, which just makes them so special.

 

 

Our dinner was at the beautiful Wood Farm House along in Whichford- which is one of the most beautiful houses I’ve been to (which makes it even better that you can book it to stay, too)! Although we were here for a delicious supper cooked By Matilda, I couldn’t help but fawn at all the interiors and attention to detail in this beautiful space (which sleeps 10, so could make for the most perfect spot for a girlie getaway or big family staycation)- and I was taking serious design notes from the bedrooms to the airy dining room sitting area and perfectly pruned and flower-show worthy garden- a dream!

 

 

 

 

 

Although we weren’t away for long, it was the perfect proper introduction to this stunning part of the country which I’ve barely scratched the surface of (how?!), and I’m so excited to be back soon for a little holiday and further explore of this special place.

An Afternoon At Charleston

  A couple of weekends ago, on a warm April afternoon (possibly one of the first we’d had when it wasn’t raining), we headed down to beautiful Charleston for a well-overdue explore of the house and gardens in the heart of Sussex…

At the moment, free weekends for me are usually spent catching up on washing like a military operation, changing the beds and diving into my laptop to finally catch up on the weeks unfinished work- so having the time to be slow, take in the intricate small details and do things at a pace which isn’t reminiscent of a sponsored mini marathon always feels like a real luxury.

And what a location to spend an afternoon too! The charm of Charleston is that it feels like a special window into a very unique way of living, and one that feels so distant from the way many of us operate nowadays. Having caught glimpses of the stunning home of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant online and through word of mouth from long-adoring visiting friends- it’s been top of my list to tick off for the longest time and it couldn’t have blown me away more.

 

Incredibly, despite being lived in from 1916 and a base for the Bloomsbury set in the years following, there’s something surprisingly contemporary about this beautiful farmhouse. Preserved in its lived-in state, the house is a museum which feels more like quietly exploring a ridiculously talented (and free-spirited) friends house whilst they’re out. Having the opportunity to see everything in such intricate detail; be that paintings, personal files, books carefully bound by bowed ribbon, or half used paints left out in their studio feels incredibly intimate in a way you don’t often experience, and something that photos don’t really capture (even though, if you’re anything like me- you’ll end up taking hundreds)! The fact you can also explore the gardens which provided such enormous inspiration to the group during their time living here, feels like an incredibly special touch and a real opportunity to see the world through their eyes, at least in a small way.

 

 

I think the thing that blew me away the most was the way the creativity was channelled throughout the home. I’ve never felt such an impulsive need to go home and paint every magnolia or plain wooden surface with something, anything (before catching up with myself and realising…. I’m not Vanessa Bell). With sun-like circles, swirls and almost melodic brush strokes on every available surface- kitchen tiles finished with intricate blousy blooms, light fittings embellished with jewel-hued beads and painterly style finishes adorning canvasses- it’s a total heaven for ideas and inspiration alike, and a very special place to spend an April afternoon.

Everything Good In My Make Up Bag Right Now

Hello lovely people! It’s been a few weeks since I popped something together on here- I’ve been busy bedding into writing a little bit more on Substack, so haven’t wanted to spread myself too finely, so thank you for being patient with me! It felt very timely launching over there for the first day of spring, and I feel like I’ve been growing some little roots and finding some small confidence which has been a really lovely space for some more heartfelt and personal writing which feels a little bit scary to share on here. Admittedly, that feels a bit strange typing- as I feel like I’ve shared every up and down and life moment here since starting my blog in 2010 (and this website will always be my baby)- but it’s been nice to explore somewhere new, and keep moving with the times (despite my reluctance to ever do this as and when they’re happening). I wanted to come back this morning with a little post about some of the very best things currently in my make up bag. Everything I wear on my face; much like my wardrobe- works on a pretty slow and well loved rotation. I find something that works and use it again and again- perhaps with different combinations, normally until it’s either discontinued or so worn out that the packaging has faded and it looks like it’s just come back from backpacking on it’s gap year- which, in my opinion, is a sure fire sign of a great product…

Anyway- without further nattering, here are the current beauty squad who, alongside a strong cup of Yorkshire Gold in the mornings have been getting me through even the sleepiest of starts and greyest of days, I salute you! Ilia Skin Rewind Complexion Stick

a.k.a the foundation-stand-in stick that has truly changed my make-up game. Ilia have just been one of those brands that I keep dipping my toe into and keep becoming more and more impressed by. Getting excellent coverage, a gorgeous slightly-dewy finish and perfect base has never felt easier and every time I wear this I surprise myself by how *good* my skin looks. I can apply it so quickly (I normally buff it out with a brush, but fingers also work fine) and it makes the morning getting ready process oh so very easy.

Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Wear Concealer

With the complexion stick, it’s not often that I need concealer, but there’s something about it that feels like a bit of a beauty safety blanket and this concealer is the one (as well as this Laura Mercier bad boy) that works wonders with blemishes, redness and dark circles- without feeling cakey or too thick.

Nars Afterglow Liquid Blush

a.k.a the perfect rosy flush with amazing pigment. I’ve been a liquid blush girlie for a while now, and anything from the NARS Orgasm shade is just always perfect. It’s the perfect soft pink tone and a little really goes a long way. This liquid blush also blends and dries beautifully which makes it look really natural and lived in without any redness (which, for a woman who is always rushing around and knows what the alternative looks like- I fully welcome).

Rare Beauty Warm Wishes Effortless Bronzer

This may well be the best bronzing stick I’ve used, and I am currently devouring every last bit because it’s too good to waste any. I normally dot this on around the arc of my forehead and cheekbones and blend out, and I feel like it’s one of those products that’s so hard to get wrong. Even if you’re a little bit heavy handed like me (and have the tendency to use a make up stick like an excited toddler with a Crayola)- this blends out so well meaning you can really achieve a natural ‘oh me?! Just a long weekend in Cannes!’ look.

  Suqqu Eyeshadow Signature Colour Eyes

When I was growing up I remember my mum always having a signature eye make up look which included blue eyeliner in her waterline and a gold shimmery no7 eyeshadow- both of which just looked like ‘her’. I feel like I’ve fully adopted the shimmery eyeshadow as my own, and whether it’s ‘cool’ or not, is just something I have seemingly done every day for years now which always lights up my eyes and feels like me. This Suqqu palette is a current favourite (I love the rose gold shades), and their colour offering is always *so* good.

Victoria Beckham Baby Blade Brow Pencil and Vast Lash Mascara

Some people know Victoria Beckham for being a Spice Girl, some know her for her fashion- but I am going to have to say I now know her for her absolutely top tier eye products- because these may be some of the best I’ve used. Admittedly, there’s not *loads* that a brow pencil can do to blow you away (although this one is the perfect shade and size so it makes creating a fluffy precise brow really easy) BUT the mascara is one I have repurchased twice already and is just so great. Not only does it give the perfect sixties-esque curl and length, but it’s so easy to remove (which shouldn’t be a selling point but really is). It just rolls off and is the least messy mascara I’ve ever had to get off, which- if you’re prone to leaving on your mascara in the shower, will know that is quite a feat to have. Bravo!

Trinny London Lash 2 Brow

Okay so I’ve only used the brow gel in this excellent duo, but it’s absolutely fab. You could probably go without pencilling them before as this has a lovely bit of pigment (but not so much it feels streaky or like ‘90s coloured hair gel wands- which I always fear)- and really helps keep them shaped beautifully.

Nars Light Reflecting Loose Setting Powder

I’m sure there are young trendy beauty people on TikTok insisting powder isn’t needed or the done thing; but when you’re as oily as me it’s almost as essential as everything else. This powder is a master at setting everything without leaving you feeling like you’ve baked anything on- you can do a verrrry light dusting and you’re absolutely set (no pun intended).

Lancôme Juicy Tubes

Because I like my beauty with a big dose of nostalgia, please and thank you. Why did we ever forget how great these are?! I feel like I’m in Winning London with Mary-Kate and Ashley every time I open my handbag and see the candyfloss pop of pink. They’re also the perfect not-too-sticky gloss and it’s very much become a lip balm stand in as an absolute handbag essential.

A Welcome & Introduction to ‘The Sentimental Wardrobe’

Good morning lovely people! A bit of a different one from me this morning, but just a little note to say that as of today I’ve just launched my shiny new newsletter, The Sentimental Wardrobe, over on Substack! 

GAH! What a way to start a Wednesday! Having been blogging and sharing life online for the best part of 14 years (an oversharer or a love for the autobiographical? Who can tell?!) I’m ridiculously excited to introduce to you another very exciting new venture for me (you can ‘READ ALL ABOUT IT!’ this morning, in my first post here). 

But in short The Sentimental Wardrobe is a newsletter rooted in nostalgia, but sharing what’s good and special now too (that I also believe will continue to feel special for years to come). If you know me (or even if you don’t)- you’ll perhaps know I have a real penchant for the past. Whether that’s rooting through vintage shops (and ‘smelly dresses’- THE JOY!), revelling in the fluro hues of indie discos of yesteryear (I’m sure there will be a whole post about my unwavering love of Cajun Dance Party one day) or scanning Pinterest for Pattie Boyd and a blue-eyeshadowed Sally Albright. I’m constantly looking back but forever excited about the future. 

So, whether you fancy curling up with some chatter about life, parenting, style evolution, shopping, new musc (and old), my fail-safe Vinted search terms, favourite second hand spots, new brands and makers that I must share on a NEED TO KNOW basis, a heart to heart about dating for the first time, mood-boosting playlists and conversations with women who I would quite like to be when I grow up (ahem)- I hope you’ll maybe enjoy heading over! It’s an internet picnic of sorts, with all of the best bits spread out and ready for you to sit back, relax and soak up. 

It’s also a way to hopefully access the community that I feel has sadly dwindled from blogging a little bit since I began (which makes it sound like it’s because of me- which I truly hope it isn’t!!) My blog is my baby- and I love writing in this space that is my own with all of my heart- but since starting in 2010 on Blogspot, things have changed a lot. I miss the excited community, commenting and the connection of familiar voices around the world leaving small imprints on one another (even if that was in the shape of a lookbook.nu heart)! 

I also think it’s worth mentioning that by writing here, it absolutely won’t change the content you see on this blog at all. There will still be weekly blog posts and Instagram content- just a little more over on Substack to get stuck into too!

The Excellent Beauty Empties Worth Repurchasing

  *post features affiliate linksSometimes it’s easy when you’re trying skincare and picking up new products to forget the things that really work. The ones you loved going back to for a reason before your eye got caught by something in shiny packaging flirting with you at the counter of Space NK. It’s an easy thing to happen, I understand! But, as a written note to the products that I’ve tried, used every last drop of and loved- I thought I’d share some the empties I want to make sure are not only recycled but remembered too (you know- without being too dramatic- that started to sound like some kind of skin care eulogy).

I’m sure you might have heard me wax lyrical about some of these products; there’s a handful of which I’m on my second, third or fourth bottle (trust me, they’re good). But the main thing is that all of them I would purchase and use again in a heartbeat- and that’s definitely the thing to remember after the last drop has disappeared…

Skin Rocks Retinol

If someone is going to make a good retinol, it’s going to be Caroline Hirons. The woman never misses! She’s the woman I’d trust on making a crucial spot-popping judgement (never do it too early, and push UP), with flare ups and whose skin wisdom knows no limits. Anyway, unsurprisingly, her skincare collection, Skin Rocks- is excellent, and this is the second bottle of her retinol I’ve bought from Space NK. With two to chose from you can opt for a strength that works for your skin, which means even if you have more sensitive skin you can build up to something that works, and this stuff is superb.

Lixirskin Universal Emulsion

I found this moisturiser in my stash and remembered the very pretty packaging from a few years ago when I tried the brands Electrogel Cleanser (which sounds far more intimidating than it is), and loved it. This moisturiser is the perfect day moisturiser; great under make up, non-pilling and absorbs perfectly too, and sometimes that’s just really all you need.

  Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion Concealer

The concealer that would go straight to number one in my Desert Island beauty picks. If nothing else is going to make me look alive, I can rest assured this little doe foot and bottle has got me. Thick enough to use on its own, but never heavy or claggy on the skin (which I’m not sure is a description most beauty writers will be using, weirdly) but it’s just SO great. The Miss World of make up and one product I know I’ll be using until the day it’s discontinued (and then I’ll be scouring Amazon and weird eBay shops for it thereafter).

Emma Hardie Moringa Cleansing Balm 

A new discovery for me for this year, but a product I’ve heard people talk about for years, and I can finally see why. Incredibly reminiscent to my other favourite Elemis Pro Collagen Cleansing Balm, the most deliciously scented cleanser that has the power to transport you to a fabulous London spa with it’s smell alone. It’s also a dream for removing make up, and both this and the Elemis balm will always be worth every penny to me.

Elemis Pro Collagen Super Serum Elixir

I am a real elixir/serum convert, and this little gem is nothing short of brilliant at injecting serious hydration and glow. Being someone partial to dehydration (one day I’ll learn), fine forehead lines are definitely something I’m aware of, and this is so great for helping with fine lines and giving them a little bit of love.

Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish 

I don’t think there’s anything new I can say about this cleanser that I haven’t said before. It’s my absolute OG and few come close to cleansing as gently as this and leaving no trace at all. Forever *chefs kiss*!

Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Eye Base

I’m quite new to the eye cream club, but after a few years of late nights (ahem), come 7am I need a gentle nudge in the right direction when it comes to looking awake. Thankfully this stuff is absolutely brilliant. Nourishing, plumping and butter thick- but absorbs quickly and leaves no residue either- the dream. 

Drunk Elephant B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Gel

There was a time last year where I could not find this anywhere for love nor money and I was getting desperate. I ended up buying this one in a gift set at Christmas, but have since seen it pop up again which my skin is over-joyed about. Not only is it incredibly hydrating but weirdly it does wonders for my skin in regards to break-outs and keeping them at bay. I’ve yet to find another serum I’ll go to the darkest depths of the internet to hunt down like this one.

Susanne Kauffmann Hyaluron Serum / Kate Sommerville Hydrakate Serum

In my quest to find a suitable Drunk Elephant replacement, I sampled a couple of alternative hydrating serums, and I must say- these both did a brilliant job at filling some pretty big boots. My brief for a great serum is that it quickly absorbs, works well under make up and gives my skin a real drink- and these both did that in spades, brava!

Typology Vitamin C Radiance Serum

Ugh, everything Typology do is just excellent. They make brilliant, minimal fuss products that truly get the job done and make understanding skincare and the things your skin needs really straightforward and simple. The New (To Me) Brands I Love For 2024

  (and a not-so-sutble nod (or, pointe) to a long lived love of ballet…)Photos: Beatrice Granados, Location: Studio 74 Dance School, Playlist whilst shooting: herePost includes press samplesWhen I sat down to think about some of the brands that I’ve been most excited for since the start of this year, they all had one thing in common. Aside from the fact they’re all beautifully designed, female founded and collectively boast more intricate detail, romance and frothy tulle than a Marie Antoinette banquet- you could also say they all make a delicate point towards the ‘balletcore’ aesthetic; a trend I’m gleefully embracing, but one that admittedly has been part of my style subconscious since I was about four (as my mum and nan can attest to).

Now, I’m sure anyone who has been at either of the two adult ballet classes I have attended so far this year would say, I am no natural ballerina. Most of the drama I produce from my dancing is dependant on whether I’ll accidentally kick somebody and unfortunately for me, there is no leotard, pair of Bloch shoes or slick enough bun that will honour me with the grace, musicality or flexibility to fool anyone (I have told my teacher I am willing to be her ‘project’ student if she so wishes). But! Let me tell you! I am trying! If I can’t nail the moves in class, I can assure you I’ll desperately try and nail the dressing up part (this girl is truly all leotard no idea); give me a wrap cardigan, some tights and a sheer skirt any day of the week and I’m a happy girl.

And, aside from the dancing- one thing I love about ballet, is the theatre and camaraderie of it. I’ll never forget the first time seeing The Nutcracker at Christmas and feeling like I was completely in another world. The playfulness and romance. The escapism. The magic of making something so skilled and strong look so soft and delicate, in a way that looks so effortless but requires more effort and awareness than most things I’ve ever turned my hand to.

Thankfully, I’m joyfully at an age where I can *just* about relax into being comfortable with not being very good at something. Which when you take actually being good away; largely leaves the fun of it left to be enjoyed, and what a special thing that is! So as well as a post dedicated to some of the most brilliant new (ish to me) brands that would make for excellent chassé-appropriate attire, this is a bit of a note to self to just having a little bit more fun. Knowing that whether you’re 4 or 74, dressing up for a mid-week dance when you’ve got two left feet is okay, and sometimes (or, hopefully a lot of the time) it’s about the joy of it that counts. To Wear Rabbit

I remember discovering Sophie’s brilliant brand Rabbit over Christmas and falling in love immediately. With all of her piece’s delicately hand crafted; whether that’s knitwear on antique machines, hand crochet or careful intricate illustrations screen printed onto fabric; everything feels fairy tale like- marrying something that feels both pre-Raphaelite and new romantic all at once. Inspired by everything from Shakespearean theatre costumes, period pieces; with some made from archive Alexander McQueen silk making them even more special. Rabbit’s SS24 collection has been worn by endless front women, including The Last Dinner Party; sealing that it truly has ethereal front woman written all over it.

Up From A Dream

If you’re ever after the perfect printed smock midi that will take you through the years and seasons (from office to party to dancing and back again), Up From A Dream have some of the most special handmade offerings. Created using organic vintage and deadstock fabrics, each dress; be it with tiny delicate florals, needlepoint cord or combining ticking stripe with ruffles- has something that makes it truly unique and special.

 

 

  Salter House

Oh my goodness, if money was no object I can confidently say I would live in Salter House. Everything they stock is magic- from period inspired nightwear in the most delicate cotton, the most stunning fairy-like organza (from their Hannah Kristina Metz collaboration), pointelle undies and home wear that truly paint a picture of a life I would love to climb right into.

  Darla

Although Amy and her beautiful brand are about to go on a hiatus, I couldn’t not include her when I was thinking of some of my favourite new brand discoveries- and having admired Amy’s skill and eye for years I was so excited by Darla. Combining timeless silhouettes with romantic modern fabrics, each piece is crafted with so much care and truly oozes an old school elegance. You can pick up some of Amy’s beautiful designs at the Salad Days Market on the 9th  of March at a discount too, so definitely take note!

Lovaan

After spotting their newest look book, styled by one of my favourite stylists, Rachel Bakewell; I was in love with Lovaan. Inspired by the love founder Anna felt when exploring her grandmothers’ wardrobes as a child, and the magic and timelessness those pieces held- Anna’s dresses are designed to be worn and loved forever, with intricate detail and a carefully considered femininity that will make you fall in love too.

 

  Hill House Home

Famous for their nap dresses that are designed to make every part of the day feel beautiful, Hill House are some of the best at rethinking classic shapes in new and elegant ways. This frothy duster cape and tulle nap dress truly made me feel like both like Midge Maisel and that I *could* be about to go on stage at the Royal Opera House; which is exactly how you should feel in something so special, if you ask me.

Naya Rea

With dresses that have more tiers than an iced wedding cake, bows, ribbons and smocking aplenty- Naya Rea are champions at the perfect occasion pieces (that you could very much also wear with trainers whilst running for the 49 bus and feel a million dollars too).

 

  Cabbages & Roses

One of my favourite British brands that completely combine both functionality and timeless beauty. Cabbages & Roses consistently produce collections that could be mistaken for things belonging to one of the March sisters- with dresses that are made for swooshing through fields in muddy boots and truly living in. Whether that’s their famous needlecord in a chintzy floral, or a heritage tartan- every item is lovingly designed and made and truly feels like real heirloom clothing.

Hai

If wearable silk dresses that feel nostalgic and playful are your kind of thing, may I point you in the direction of Hai. Whether that’s puff sleeves and dessert like dresses or more structured silk pieces for a different kind of daywear, Hai are the home of beautiful, wearable silks. Plus, their bags are absolutely beautiful too.

Motherhood at Three

  On Friday you turned three- my tiny, sparkly, special little bean.Although in certain terms three doesn’t seem like many years, these last few seem to have flown by quicker than any I’ve ever experienced. I feel like I’ve blinked and suddenly I have a fully fledged little person climbing onto me (using me as merely a vessel for a colourful imagination that makes me everything from a climbing frame, horse, boat, and race car all from the moment you clamber upon my back).

I feel like just yesterday we were painting your nursery, panicking about how to change a nappy and wondering who this little person would turn out to be, and magically- it’s you. My sweet boy with dimpled hands that nearly constantly smell like fresh sticky tangerines and little plump cheeks that are like tiny cushions when we press up to each other for a cuddle.

I don’t know many three year olds, but you’re the smartest little spark. You’re inquisitive, chatty, kind and the biggest sunshine in my whole world. Your imagination is magic; you’re a knight, a king, and a roll of wrapping paper is a horse (or an elephants trunk, depending on the important game in hand) and I promise I’ll always be grateful and pay careful attention to your dinosaur corrections- I’m almost sure I know the difference between an ankylosaurus (big boulder-like swooshy tail) and raptor (little and quick) now.

I know I’ve said this before, but so much of being a parent is getting to see the beauty in the ordinary, and there’s something even more so about learning to see and feel it through your eyes as you grow. Whether that’s seeing the sky turn a flossy-pink when a low flying plane swoops overhead, or spotting the lights dotted on a crane at night (exciting!). I’ve also realised there are very *very* few people that will join me in listening to one song as many times over and over again as you do, and I love that we can listen to one song in the car on repeat and never get sick of it. That feels very special.

Most importantly, in the wobbly times, you’ve reminded me quietly that all that really matters is each other. That looking after each other (and myself, which is definitely sometimes tricker to remember) is all that really matters. When the trivial things feel weighty, heady or overwhelming sometimes a belly laugh, pretending to be a shark on the wooden lava floor, some baked beans and listening to Jemaine Clement as the big crab in Moana can shift that into a better place. So much of parenting is being mailable, bending, adjusting and changing shape to make the next thing work- and I do, I will and I have.

I’ve learnt that perhaps the juggle and the guilt might never disappear completely, and I think that’s really because I only want the world for you. More than anything I want to do right where I can, which I know is a constant journey of trying to do. Learning how to make peace with that and the ongoing push and pull of managing my own expectations as a mother, parent and big best friend to you will be something that like the weather, your taste in sandwiches and our favourite song on the Wonka soundtrack- will just change and become clearer as we go, and that, little one is always more than enough.
