Giftmas Gift Guides 2023: Day 3, For The Little Ones

(Vintage Paddington jumper, Yoto player, A History of Pictures book, Lion backpack, Lovevery box, My 1st Years toy)

*post contains affiliate links and press samples It’s day 3 of Giftmas, and today it’s all about our little loves…

I feel like there are different stages of shopping for children at Christmas, and I have fully arrived at the time where the Argos catalogue is prime reading material, and the adverts between Milkshake in the morning are merely a race between quickly changing the channel or there rapidly being an ‘I’D LIKE THAT!’ afterwards. Gone are the naïve ambitions of a purely wooden collection of elf-crafted imagination play toys and Montessori stackers- but actually, when it comes to putting my present buying hat on, I think I’m more excited than ever. Because even if you’re vehemently against primary-coloured plastic, there are so many wonderful things for those with fizzy and excitable imaginations that sometimes maybe that catalogue holds a little more inspiration than we might realise. Plus, one thing a good friend mentioned to me recently was the present buying strategy of  ‘something they want, something they need, something to wear and something to read’- which I think is quite a lovely ethos when trying to keep present buying for little ones (relatively) streamlined. Anyway- I’ve picked out a few things I know would make gorgeous gifts, whether that’s for your own little one or not, and some extras below in-case you’re still a little tight for ideas.

First up, the present they won’t be *that* excited to open, but you will- and that is of course, some excellent knitwear. Even better if it’s handknitted/and or/vintage. I found this Paddington gem after a very kind reader sent it to me on Vinted, and that really is an absolute gold mine of excellent hand knits. Don’t Bother Grandma also do amazing knitwear (which can be personalised too) and my favourites Be Diddy, Les Petits Champignons and new to the block, Gogo’s Vintage– also have brilliant curated vintage picks. And whilst we’re on clothes- can we talk about this lion backpack?! Donsje Amsterdam do the most gorgeous accessories and bags for children, and although they’re definitely a ‘bigger’ item, I love their woodland inspired backpacks for little ones. Next up is the Yoto player; an item both me and little A have become very excited by and such a lovely way of listening to some of his favourite stories, music and songs (as well as activities and radio for children too). It’s incredibly soothing after an afternoon of play, and the pleasure of selecting what he’d like to listen to makes it really interactive (without any screens either)! Plus, the story cards make lovely gifts and it’s perfect for travelling around and for car journeys. Another excellent ‘big’ present idea would be a Lovevery play kit– a box filled with educational (and fun) toys to match the development stage of your child and help stimulate imagination and learning at the same time. I’ve been fortunate enough to try these since Arlo was little, and they’re still some of his most played with toys (the 25-27 month kit remains one of the biggest hits in this house- the sink is GOLDEN). Finally, I included a very sweet gift we received from My 1st Years when little A was a baby, as although not necessarily the most original, still comes up top as one of my first places to go for ideas for tiny people. Whether that’s newborns to toddlers, they always have the most thoughtful gifts and I love that you can personalise them too.

And some more ideas for your tiny tots (and the grown ups too)… For mamas and papas: Two things that have wriggled their way to the top of my parent-giving list are my pal Alice Tate’s ‘British Family Escapes’ book (which is perfect for any families planning a getaway from the expert herself) and these two guides, ‘Playgrounds in London’ and ‘Eating Out in London with kids’ by Emmy Watts – two wonderful women who truly know their stuff.A treasure: Now, if you’re a parent and looking to treat your partner (or other new parents), the Le Mela fingerprint ring kits feel like a completely special keepsake present. Offering you the chance to create your own bespoke fingerprint ring or signet, I feel like this would be so special to create something completely unique (I know new parents haven’t necessarily got time to be making their own jewellery, but perhaps as a little activity it could be lovely). I love the idea of having my little’s fingerprint on a ring, and this feels like a beautiful way of creating that.Art with heart: I’ve included Polly on these guides before, but her initial and name illustrations would make for the most beautiful gifts for a nursery or bedroom. Paired with her beautiful wallpapered frames, they’re truly a bit of magic. For little libraries: A series my dad introduced me to several years ago was the inspiring stories of Jackson Superhero , a collection of books about a little boy (Jackson) who turns into a superhero by night. They’re the most heartwarming stories of hope and dreaming big and we love reading them at bedtime. Additionally, the wonderful Emily Coxhead has collaborated with Paper and Wool on fabric (and personalized) editions of her Happy News . Although I think they may have *just* sold out, it’s worth checking back (and Emily’s book Find Your Happy is also a great bedtime read too, as well as Paper and Wool’s beautiful products). I’ve also added a previous link to my 2021 guide as well as my favourite kids brands too (as well as some extra picks below)! 2021 / Favourite Kids Brands

Giftmas Gift Guides 2023: Day 2, The New Additions

(Jo Malone hand wash, Liberty candle, Papier diary, Vieve gift set, Bourii body oil, Tim Walker book, Bramley gift set)

*post contains affiliate links and press samples For day 2 of Giftmas, today we’re shopping for the new people in your life…

When I was asking on Instagram about the kind of people you’d like to see a gift guide for one of the suggestions that came up was shopping for people who were new in your life; or people that you didn’t really know all *that* well yet. New additions if you like! Whether that’s new in-laws, step-siblings, your brothers lovely fiancé or just somebody you want to buy for but just don’t really know where to begin- hopefully I can help! And I get it- it’s a tricky one! It might not feel like the time to show off your expert gift giving prowess, but trust me- it also maybe isn’t the time to be buying a snazzy pair of socks either (and hand on heart I love a nice pair as much as the next person). It’s a fine line to tread- you want to make a good impression, not overdo it and probably not spend a fortune either- but it is possible!

So let’s start at the top- I’ll be honest and say I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who doesn’t get excited by a Jo Malone bag. Or Jo Malone anything. There’s something about the cream and black piped packaging that has something magic woven through it; and with their travel candles starting at £28 (and their precious gingerbread gifting at £32)- they always have a really lovely festive selection if you’re a bit lost on where to begin. And much in a similar vein; who doesn’t love opening a beautiful candle? I know these things are all quite ‘obvious’- but let me tell you, sometimes these things are obvious for a reason- they’re just great. This Liberty one is absolutely beautiful- and I’d quite happily open the box and stare at that all day too. Sticking with beauty, I also love Bourii for their luxury body oils (which would make a real treat), and adore Bramley for their body care sets (they’re pretty much always stocked in every beautiful hotel room I’ve stayed in, which I think is a sign they’re an excellent bet). In terms of make up, I think giving a beauty lover anything from Vieve would be a *very* good shout (and make you look like you know a thing or two about make up)- additionally, Space NK have some other beautiful sets for make-up lovers too. Now- if smellies don’t feel like a good option I do have a (few) other suggestions. Papier and their personalised stationery being one. Not only do they excel at beautiful diaries, recipe planners and journals- but also do beautiful calendars too which I think are really special. Finally, I’ve also added a beautiful coffee table book above, as I think there’s something beautifully thoughtful about a book you’d think they’d love- and with so many unique art and lifestyle books out there (I always love gallery gift shops for a big peruse of this kind of thing) you’re bound to find something that would tick some boxes.

And if you’re still feeling a bit lost on what to get them… A foodie fix: One of my favourite restaurants in London, Lina Stores , have long been a favourite when it comes to gift giving. Whether that’s some of their beautiful olive oil that looks as beautiful on a counter as it tastes in a pasta dish, or one of their meal delivery kits (which could be lovely to arrive just after Christmas)- they never get it wrong. Additionally, there are lots of other amazing deli’s that offer similar produce, including another favourite Panzers and Lulu’s too for delicious wines and everything in-between. If you’re more after a meal to their door, Dishpatch offers cook-at-home dinner kits from some of the best chefs around and would make a lovely at home date night in the days after Christmas.A hamper, of course: Would it be a Christmas gift guide without a nod to the hamper? A festive icon for a reason, and thankfully now there are so many out there you needn’t spend a fortune either. Naturally Fortnum’s is the home of the iconic wicker gift, but I also love Liberty for their offering. Plus, if you want to be creative (and work on a more flexible budget) you could also create your own too which would be a beautiful present. All things scented: Honestly, one of my favourite shops to cover *most* gift giving bases is Earl of East . If ever I’m after a unique gift, or even something simple (i.e a candle) that I want to feel a little special, I come here. They have the most beautiful fragrance and lifestyle pieces and they’re a real one stop for beautiful presents.and some extra picks too, for added inspiration…

Giftmas Gift Guides 2023: Day 1, For Your Bestie

(Love Stories star sign knickers, Nora Ephron book, Rouje comb, Katie J Pearson record, Paul & Joe lipstick, Lisa Eldridge Velveteen lip colour, Rouje palette, Lancôme Louvre collaboration palette, Jones Road fragrance, J Hannah nail varnish, L.K Bennett & Tada & Toy hoops)

*post contains affiliate links and press samples It’s back! Giftmas 2023 is here and what better way to begin than a handful of things for your bestie (or…ahem… just things I’d really like)…

It’s back! After a fallow year last year to recoup in the ol’ gift giving ideas department, Giftmas is back and (hopefully) shinier than ever- huzzah! I know there are plenty of brilliant places to dose up on inspiration around this time of year, so thank you as ever for tuning in and coming back! I personally don’t think you can ever have enough gift giving inspiration, so hopefully you find a few ideas over here across the next few days (and if not, maybe just some terrible cracker-style jokes and festive puns instead). As with previous years, I wanted to get these guides out in time for any offers coming up that you might be able to take advantage of, as well as to allow time for shipping and for any small brands to keep on top of any orders too!

Anyway! I thought I’d get the ball rolling with a category that I always disguise as ‘gifts for your best friend’ but just seems to be really nice things I’d quite like for myself.  As with most categories, these things are obviously subject to who your best friend is (for example, if it’s Wilbur your family Labrador some of these might not be completely apt)- but by and large there’s something about a beautiful edition of their favourite book, a new fragrance or some unique beautiful jewellery that I think is largely fail safe across the board for your special pal (as long as they don’t have four legs). So let’s start at the top; if like me they’re a sucker for the stars these knickers from Love Stories (in collaboration with Moonsisters) are pretty special indeed. Love Stories also are expert at beautiful pjs and slinky sets- which I always think is lovely if you know that’s the kind of thing they’d never buy for themselves. I also think the same goes for fragrance and beauty too- two things which often feel a little more indulgent to buy for yourself and this debut scent from Jones Road feels like the perfect clean, fresh and warm fragrance (with notes of neroli, orange blossom, and sea spray). Additionally, I also love the Paul & Joe beauty collections for excellent reasonable product and playful retro (and changeable) packaging, and have fallen head over heels for pretty much anything Lisa Eldridge releases (her lipsticks would be the perfect treat). There’s also J Hannah for the most beautiful cruelty-free varnish shades- or these beautiful palettes from Lancôme (their Louvre collection looks like *actual* art) and Rouje, who naturally succeed in making anything from the perfect lippy to the coolest comb (why yes, combs *can* be cool thanks for asking). One of my favourite presents from my birthday this year was this special edition of one of my favourite Nora Ephron booksfrom a friend; anniversary editions or reissues are a beautiful excuse to pick up something you know they’ll love. I also love the idea of picking up one of your favourite records to share with them too. Finally, one of my favourite jewellery collaborations this year came from L.K Bennett and Tada & Toy with these chunky sparkly hoops; but I also loved the Shrimps x Daisy collection which has some absolute gems in it too.

And if my best friend budget was limitless I’d also be picking up these too… Uncut Stems: Another gorgeous gift I had from my birthday this year was a flower subscription from two of my besties from Uncut Stems; a flower subscription service who deliver unarranged blooms to your door so you can embrace your inner florist from the comfort of your own home. It was such a treat to spend a morning every other week arranging flowers (with their handy guide), and I felt very wholesome indeed.A Favourite New Cookbook: For the home cook or baker, a new cookbook is always a treat. With so many beautiful ones continually coming out, The Art Of A Friday Night Dinner caught my eye as a beautiful gift- for an extra thoughtful touch pop in some post its for recipes you think they’d love.   Lisa Says Gah: If you’re after a bit of a one-stop heavenly shop, I could spend a small fortune on my friends on Lisa Says Gah. Whether that’s their precious little nail stickers (yes I want pears, cheese and bows on my fingers), or pasta earrings – everything is a dream. Damson Madder: One brand who continually deliver the gems; whether that’s the perfect knitted snood, beautiful pyjamas or v.v. cool homeware are Damson Madder- and with a delicious selection all under £50 there are some beautiful pieces to snap up.  I’ve also added previous links to guides for your bestie if you need further reading too (as well as some extra picks below)!2016 / 2017 / 2018 / 2019 / 2020 / 2021

Getting Gardening & Founding a Business: 5 Minutes with Frannie Liddle

(photography by the wonderful Beatrice Granados)One of the standout perks of my job is getting to discover, and if I’m lucky, work with some incredible small businesses. Being able to see an idea, collection or product from it’s budding early moments; when the twinkle of an idea begins to blossom- and later celebrate and champion its growth feels like such a privilege. One brand I’ve had such pleasure coming across is Window Fleur.

Started over lockdown by the immeasurably lovely (and talented) Frannie and Joe, Window Fleur are the UK’s first window box subscription service- offering a beautiful (and oh so easy) solution to bringing colour and blooms into your garden (or window) without any hassle. Being someone who is constantly attempting to have green fingers (but always struggling to know where to begin) and having spent a small fortune on attempting my own window boxes in the past, discovering Window Fleur made my foray into gardening all the more simple (and sitting working by my dining room window all the more pretty too).

And naturally, as you can imagine it’s been the greatest pleasure partnering with Frannie and Joe to style a box for autumn this year. To be trusted to collaborate on something is always an honour, and to combine their extensive knowledge of all things flowers with my eye (and well, knowing what I *think* looks really beautiful)- I hope you’ll agree we’ve created something truly lovely, and a box I’m so proud of.

So, I was very happy to take any excuse to have a little chat with Frannie about all the things which made this partnership feel so enjoyable. Its everything I wanted to know from someone who seems to make running a business, keeping a garden alive (and thriving) and being an all round talented lady look very easy- mainly, how does she do it?!

Frannie! I’m so excited about our box we’ve been working on. For those that haven’t come across yourself and Window Fleur, can you introduce yourself please?

Liv, I couldn’t be more excited about our very special collaboration. It’s the first time I’ve handed over the styling reins and who better to give them to!

So Window Fleur in a nutshell, is the UK’s first ready-planted window box subscription service, with seasonal bloom bag refills. You can either buy one of our window boxes or just use our bloom bags that come in various sizes to fill your own. Together with my wonderful cousin Joe we co-founded the business back in 2020.

I’m forever in awe of anyone with the courage to delve into building their own business- how did you even know where to begin? And how did you make it work after beginning in lockdown?

Well luckily this start-up wasn’t Joe’s first rodeo but it was definitely mine. I’d personally owned a design studio working with a wide range of lifestyle brands but selling a product was very different. I think the best place to start is just testing if there is a demand for your product, you can spend forever trying to perfect it, but that comes with time and experience.

Lockdown was really hard, plant stock was at a shortage (due to everyone gardening) but we persevered as we had such a captive audience who wanted to brighten their homes.

What has been the biggest lesson you’ve learnt since beginning Window Fleur? Are there any life lessons you’ve taken away?

I’ve attempted to try to embrace the art of not fretting over the small stuff. To remember to acknowledge your accomplishments and savour the joy of celebrating every small victory along the way.

How do you manage the juggle on the day to day? What does a typical day look like for you?

I write everything down, separate to-do lists for personal life and for work; if it’s not on the list, it’s not getting done!

My typical day starts with a coffee and a dog walk, on the walk I set out my focus for the day. Then either into the office if needed or work from home depending on the tasks. These can be so varied that’s why I love it, no two days are the same.

Working with living things you have to be very reactive and at the start you are stretched very thin, you’re a marketing expert, come customer service agent, delivery driver, model all in one day!

The day finishes about 6ish with another dog walk, then either out for dinner, or an evening of life admin or working late.

One thing we’ve spoken about is our joint love of gardening; is it something you’ve always been interested in?

I used to try and skip going to bed when I was younger so I could stay up late and watch gardeners world with my mum (just to stay up late) my love of flowers and plants grew as I did, and those early days influences seemed to come out and I found myself turning into my very green fingered mother who is a real inspiration to me.

Admittedly when it comes to gardening I’m very much an amateur who also happens to be prone to a bit of plant killing (as much as I love it). How do you begin with a garden, without feeling overwhelmed? I know at the start of each season I often don’t know where to start!

I think it’s best to tackle it seasonally, set yourself a few tasks for each season so it doesn’t seem too much, just plant a few bulbs, just prune back a few bushes.

It can seem overwhelming, and a quote from one of my favourite poems springs to mind with this question “What if I fail? Oh but my darling what if you fly?” Sometimes your plants may die, but sometimes they will really flourish and double in size, and be the most beautiful thing you’ve seen and the sense of achievement you get is wonderful!

Also don’t invest in expensive plants too early on, but remember all plants need is the right amount of water, light and sun… that’s it!

Your whole job is based around seasonality, and on the cusp of a new season- what’s your favourite thing about autumn?

I think in the UK we’re really lucky to have such different seasons. Since I’ve started Window Fleur they’ve really started to govern my life. We’ve just bid farewell to an Indian summer which I think was the hottest on record for a while. I’m so ready for autumn and all the wonders it brings, from the change of colours in the leaves, to the change of wardrobe.

Finally, what does your perfect Sunday look like?

My perfect Sunday starts without a hangover, thanks to reserving nights out for Fridays (or trying to at least) Then I often do few loads of washing or any life admin that needs doing, followed by a nice dog walk and pub lunch, then home for to chill/watch a film again it’s very dedicated by the seasons. But hopefully a perfect balance of productivity and relaxation…

Thank you for having me Liv, it’s been a pleasure to work with you!

You can shop our window boxes here now!

The Summer Playlist

There’s something very satisfying about pulling together all of the songs and music that have soundtracked your summer, or a time in your life. Be it a gloomy never-ending winter where kitchen discos seem to be the only fuel to get you through the dark evenings, or a playlist that wraps you up in memories so special you can pretty much be transported back with a quick listen.

Listening back to this summer’s playlist I was taken back to long car journeys singing at the top of my lungs with loved ones. So much sing-shouting it could have scared the traffic around us but thankfully didn’t. Songs I played for the first time laid on a pebbly beach on an overcast afternoon, a Maggie Rogers song I happened to walk past playing at Glastonbury to hear for the first time which bizarrely seemed to articulate the exact feelings I was having at the time. There’s the song that my brother sang at karaoke on my birthday which now seems to play every few days (White Lines), and ample songs myself and pals have spent boogying to in the kitchen (Janet Jackson, lookin’ at you)- because I think, although I can’t be sure, that’s where all the best dancing happens.

Although if I’d been more organised I would have shared this last week during the big summer heatwave send off, I thought I’d share it today- because hopefully it can bring a little sunshine to some early autumn days too when they come around…

1. Maggie Rogers – Say It, 2. Christine and the Queens- Full of life, 3. Yusuf/Cat Stevens – Take the World Apart, 4. Elton John – Are You Ready For Love? 5. Brian Eno, John Cale – Spinning Away, 6. Alice Phoebe Lou – Witches, 7. Jenny Lewis – Puppy and a Truck, 8. Paul McCartney – Calico Skies, 9. Talking Heads – (Nothing But) Flowers, 10. The Wannadies – You And Me Song, 11. First Aid Kit- Everybody’s Got to Learn, 12. Bright Eyes – First Day of My Life, 13. Cat Power – Sea of Love, 14. The Vaccines – I Always Knew, 15. CMAT, John Grant – Where Are Your Kids Tonight?, 16. Camera Obscura – French Navy, 17. The Maccabees – Love You Better, 18. The Last Dinner Party – Nothing Matters, 19. Big Thief – Vampire Empire, 20. Ratboys – Go Outside, 21. Dua Lipa – Dance The Night, 22. Dolly Parton – Here You Come Again, 23. Nina Simone – My Sweet Lord/Today Is a Killer, 24. Janet Jackson – Together Again, 25. Ramones – California Sun, 26. The Lemon Twigs – When Winter Comes Around, 27. The Black Keys – Howlin’ For You, 28. Otis Reading- These Arms of Mine, 29. Willie J Healey – Woke Up Smiling, 30. Sufjan Stevens – So You Are Tired, 31. The Beatles – Here, There and Everywhere, 32. Alice Faye – Nowhere to Go, 33. David Bowie – Young Americans, 34. Olivia Dean – Dive, 35. Dirty Nice – This Is Gonna Hurt, 36. Grandmaster Flash – White Lines, 37. Kings of Leon – King of the Rodeo, 38. Arlo Parks, Phoebe Bridgers – Pegasus, 39. Johnny Flynn – Detectorists, 40. Fionn Regan – Dogwood Blossom, 41. Black Country, New Road – Chaos Space Marine, 42. Sufjan Stevens, My Brightest Diamond – Impossible Soul, 43. A Long Weekend in Suffolk

A couple of weekends ago, when the weather forecast was peppered with sunshine and it felt like summer had come along, even for a moment- I spent the weekend exploring Suffolk- a beautiful part of the U.K I hadn’t spent a lot of time in before and somewhere that, if anything, sends a strong message to the rest of the country proclaiming the world is a more beautiful place with pastel houses and front gardens sprawling with seemingly sky-high hollyhocks.

And who doesn’t love the thought of exploring quaint little towns dotted with clay pink homes lining the coast? With villages seemingly built on old-time nostalgia and beautiful old bookshops; green grocers with punnets spilling onto pavements and chippies seeping with the scent of sizzling oil and vinegar- there’s something special about visiting somewhere largely untouched by time, only to take things slowly whilst you’re there and soak them up at the pace they were intended.

And despite only having a few days to explore (and a list of what felt like a dozen bakeries to tick off), we managed to squeeze a fair bit in so I thought I’d share a little walk-through of some of the best spots we managed to visit, and a few places to note too.

Woodbridge

Our home for the weekend was in the quaint market town of Woodbridge. Nestled in the centre of town, opposite the local bakery (late night wafts of bread, yes PLEASE) and a stone’s throw away from the main flurry of shops- our Woodbridge Hideaway* flat was the perfect bolthole for a few days; and was not only wonderful for exploring the town but was also handy for exploring nearby beauty spots too. With airy Scandi-inspired interiors that made the glowy afternoon light feel like magic, our little kip spot had everything you could possibly need for a true home-from-home experience (including but not limited to; cloud-like pillows, local treats stocked in the kitchen and a comfy sofa begging for a film night after a busy day). Plus, it would have also been an excellent spot to bring little people (the property came with a travel cot and high chair) and was the perfect spot to cosy up in after a day of exploring; whether that meant cooking an evening meal with the buzz of the radio, or filling up the bath for a leisurely soak; it was pretty perfect indeed.

*press stay

  Food:

Canteen/ New Street Market: A gorgeous little shop and café stocked with wonderful brands (including Soeur, Aligne and some of the most beautiful homeware and ceramics)- New Street Market also is home to Canteen, a delightful little café with a delicious fresh lunch and cake selection, from sandwiches to small plates.

The Table: Spice Bar at The Table is where we ate during our first evening in Woodbridge, and their Asian inspired dishes made for the ultimate summer dining experience in their beautiful outdoor garden. It’s worth noting dinner spots get quite busy around here, so booking ahead is always recommended too.

Two Magpies: Anywhere that is home to a strawberry and cream donut is somewhere I’ll be bookmarking, and every morning we collected fresh pastries and orange juice from here and they were unrivalled. I can also highly recommend their smoked salmon bagel and cookies for the road too!

Honey & Harvey: Tucked away on the high street, Honey & Harvey is a glorious breakfast and coffee spot; with a menu packed with all the breakfast classics, and a sun trap of a garden to enjoy them in too (if you’re lucky with the weather)!

Seeing:

Cinema: Although we didn’t go inside (it would be seemingly rude on one of the few sunny days of the summer), I go gooey for a small independent cinema- and this looked like the cutest little spot nestled next to the station to while away a rainy afternoon.

Walks: As beautiful as the town centre is, the walks alongside the River Deben; boat spotting and just sitting on a bench to watch the world go are pretty special indeed. We spotted people paddle boarding and sailing too, so I’m sure there are also ample opportunities to get out on the river too- but in case you just fancy a sunset stroll, it’s very much worth the short mooch out of town for.

Shopping: (one thing I’d note is to check opening times of shops here; like most towns- shops here aren’t necessarily open on Sundays or at the beginning of the week, so if you’re wanting to have a mooch definitely check first).

Uniform Research: An amazing boutique stocking an impressive selection of men and women’s brands; from YMC, L.F Markey, Toast and Colourful Standard. Very much could have spent a small fortune in here- thankfully, only came away with a dress- just.

Pocket: I am like a moth to a flame with a children’s shop, and Pocket is the most beautifully stocked children’s concept store; with everything from design-led toys and gifts all with a sustainable stance.

Vanil: The most beautifully curated Scandinavian inspired home-wear styled beautifully and combining the most aesthetically pleasing designers and makers on the market.

The Merchants Table: I would only recommend making a stop here if you are willing to part with some serious cash as this place is interiors and design heaven. Stocking some of the most beautiful ceramic artists I’ve seen (and this was only through pressing my nose against the window)!

Vintage 49: An amazing selection of everything from collectables, decorative items, records and larger furniture pieces; the ultimate place for a peruse.

Oxfam Bookshop: Suffolk really *does* bookshops right, and despite there being a delightful selection a good rifle through, the Oxfam bookshop on Woodbridge’s high street definitely came up a winner.

Charlotte Crofts & Co: I literally did a small squeal when I walked past Charlotte Crofts & Co’s beautiful studio as it looked pretty much like the inside of my brain if it were a decorated location. Home of beautiful paints, papers, fine textiles, lighting and furniture- as well as an interior design studio, it’s an inspiration haven.

  Aldeburgh

Our second day of exploring included an afternoon visit to the beautiful coastal town of Aldeburgh. With the high street parallel to the sea lined with pastel cottages and sorbet-hued shops; it’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon moseying along the shops, picking up a book and then parking up on the beach to soak it all up. I don’t think I’ve ever spent so long admiring house-fronts in all my life either- there wasn’t a home that wasn’t boasting a front filled with wildflowers, sailboat ornaments in window frames or holidaymakers parked outside the front; shaking off sandy toes or deciding on the evening’s fish and chip order from their famous chippy. It had a real authentic British seaside feel, which made it all the more special.

Lunch:

One of our main ports of call was a lunch at The Suffolk*; a beautiful restaurant with rooms a stone’s throw away from the front. Boasting a menu that centres around fresh seafood, seasonal produce and British classics- it was arguably one of the most delicious meals I’ve had in a long time. Although the menu isn’t huge, it’s perfectly formed- unfussy and deliciously done. Flavours done well in an unpretentious way. Plus, one of the most delicious cocktails menus going (we’ll take a tangerine daiquiri and Shirley Temple, please and thank you!)

*press visit

  And for afters…

Because it felt rude to visit the seaside and not get an ice cream; make a stop at Harris & James for flavours that include (but are very much not limited to) croissant and cherry jam, jaffa cake and raspberry biscuit.

Orford

Although we only paid a very short visit to Orford on our way to Southwold, it would be rude to not include it because what a quaint lovely place it is! Whether you stop for a sugary Gibassier from Pump Street Bakery, or a bar of their infamous croissant flecked chocolate from their shop opposite- both are worth the slight detour alone (there’s also Butley Orford Oysterage which looked delicious, if you’re organised enough to book a table for lunch)! Plus, Orford Castle also sits proudly on the cusp of the town, which is one of Britain’s most complete keeps (and pretty incredible to walk around too).

Southwold

Our last stop on our mini-Suffolk adventure was a trip to Southwold; somewhere I’d heard nothing but gorgeous things about and was very excited to visit. Although we only spent half a day here (with the majority of it importantly tackling the arcade game leader boards and reading on the beach), it’s not hard to see why people wax lyrical about this seaside spot. With the front lined with beach huts and the coastal walk to Walberswick taking you on a journey through sandy dunes (we did the walk to The Bell Inn for a fish and chip supper); along to Southwold harbour and all it’s fishing boats, fish and chip stops and shacks- it’s a pretty magical place, and already on my list to one day come back to.

The White Dress Summer Edit

*features some press samples, photos by Beatrice GranadosLike knitwear to autumn and the perfect cosy coat to winter- not too bulky and not too itchy; a white dress is the summer is my wardrobe staple that does a lot of heavy lifting from the months of April ‘til September. Whether that’s a broderie anglaise smock, vintage silk nightdress, ‘80s wedding dress, simple cotton maxi or a ruffled printed pavlova of a dress (my personal favourite)- perhaps except for a wedding, there really isn’t an occasion where a good LWD isn’t a total failsafe.

I know the amount of summer we’ve actually had is… questionable but as I tentatively type this in the garden with the sun shining (and a forecast that hopefully means we might have at *least* another day of this) talking about white dresses/picnics in the park/dinner outside/going swimming (cross as appropriate) feels like it might just be safe. So run with this I will! And hey, even if the weather does change- the glory of a white dress is it works just as well with a trench/oversized biker/layered with knitwear, so if this post jinxes the forecast, I’m calling its bluff!

Anyway, I thought I’d share a small edit of a few of my favourite white dresses from some of my most loved independent/smaller brands. I feel like all of these serve such different purposes, but are definitely some of the brands I’ll turn to again and again for those life-long pieces.

Under Prairie Moon

a.k.a the dresses made to be worn barefoot (although would always work exceptionally well with anything from a Birkenstock to a cowboy boot- so that definitely isn’t exclusively true). With a handful of their dresses (including the ‘Meadow’) featuring the most beautiful Indian block prints, the dresses from Under Prairie Moon are airy, voluminous and have a true bohemian heart to them all. Plus, they have pockets- perfect for storing all your foraged flowers and berries!

If Only If

a.k.a the nightwear-meets-daywear perfect for a period drama (or just a nice warm morning at home listening to Radio 2). I have the hugest soft spot for If Only If nightwear; having bought their Pandora nightdress during my pregnancy; I swiftly fell in love with their delicate cotton offerings; all of which feel like real magic when being worn. There’s something very special about wearing something that genuinely feels beautiful to bed (something that is… not often true of me) but I very much always want to be a woman who wears things this lovely past 8pm.

Dôen

a.k.a the dresses that always get it right. And get it right they do. Their Beatriz dress from their Heirloom collection is my first foray into summer crochet, and it feels every bit as Birkin as I’d hoped. There’s something that gives a little ‘60s bride when wearing a crochet mini (imagine it with Priscilla inspired hair adorned with flowers and you’ll see what I mean), but paired with Mary Janes it feels like a really fun way of making a classic a little bit more ‘now’ and wearable when you’re not an extra in The Graduate.

  byTiMo

a.k.a the dresses that feel like fairytales. byTiMo is a newer discovery of mine; having spotted one of their dresses hanging on Charlotte’s wardrobe during a recent visit I very quickly fell in love with the brand (it went a bit like, me: ‘OKAY WHAT IS THAT MASTERPIECE??’) With all of their pieces sustainably and ethically made, they truly take a ‘white floral dress’ to another level. This chiffon beauty with clouds of pink and purple blooms feels almost bridal-like, and gives true Florence Welch vibes, which if you’re asking me (or actually, anyone) can only be a very good thing.

  East

a.k.a the folky inspired number. East are a brand I’ve seen and heard a lot about over the years, but are relatively new to me in terms of actually being in my wardrobe. But! With dresses as good as this (the combination of crochet, layering and frills all feels very SEA New York which is a dream), it’s hard to not see this as a solid summer staple going forward- and looks just as cool with sandals as it does with chunky boots for when it starts cooling down too.

  Coutille

a.k.a the French girl slip dress. This girl truly has a thing for a silk slip dress come the summer months. It all began with a Rouje dress a few years ago, and then a  ‘30s nightdress from Laura von Behr last summer- and now seems to be a fully fledged staple in my high summer wardrobe (a.k.a when it’s really quite hot- or over 20 degrees at least). Paired with a tied up cardigan; there’s something beautiful, fluid and sexy about a slip dress- and paired with trainers or a ballet flat also feels quite effortless too- so this Coutille number feels like a little bit of magic.

My London Summer Wish List

Every summer I have grand ambitions of making the most of the city I call home and London seems to be one of those places that sparkles all year round…

If you’re lucky and suitably wearing your rose-tinted glasses; in winter it’s slick puddle soaked streets reflecting the twinkle of Christmas lights, shopping bags tessellating on packed steamed up buses and hot chocolates walking past houses that you’re pretty sure you’ve seen once before in a Richard Curtis film.

In summer it’s balmy evenings, where the sun paints everything in the kind of warm glow that you could never quite capture on camera. People spilling out of pubs into the streets of Soho; with the chatter of friends fizzing around like the buzz of bees dancing in the parks, and dinner eaten kerbside watching the city come to life as the evening draws in.

And because sometimes it really can feel like this, I’m someone who regrets it when I haven’t squeezed all the juice out of summer in a city like London come September time. And although admittedly this year has left little to be desired when it’s comes to warm summer evenings (ahem), I thought I’d put a little list together of things I love, or long to do before the back-to-school feeling creeps around, even if just to re-inspire myself to not sit sadly at the window watching the rain throughout the last days of July…

Nice things to do in London in Summer Spend a slow Sunday morning at Columbia Road flower market, before heading to Lily Vanilli for cake and then Brick Lane for a smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel for the road (and the bus journey back to the station). Finally tick off the RA Summer Exhibition (and also catch some of Lucy Mahon’s and Frankie Thorp’s beautiful work at their ‘Common People’ exhibition). Find a rare sunny afternoon and go for a walk in Hyde Park, and then hire a boat on the Serpentine for an hour (and this time try not to get stuck).Go for a leisurely canal-side breakfast one Saturday (or, actually any day really) at Towpath Café and maybe bring a book to read to really soak it all up (oooer)!Nice weather almost essential for my measly self, but I’d love to swim again at Beckenham Place Park one morning (or at Brockwell Lido if the weather is less forgiving).Pay a visit to Forza Wine (only about thirty years after everyone ahead of the curve/moderately trendy) and soak up the sunset from a picturesque Peckham rooftop (look at this gal catching up with the whole of south London)!Go for lunch at the delicious-sounding Garden Museum cafe (I also love the sound of their Wild Life drawing workshop).Reserve a sandwich at none other than Chatsworth Bakehouse and take them for a picnic at Crystal Palace Park (boats/dinosaur spotting welcome afterwards too). Thanks to Bre, I’ve had a strong hankering to travel back in time to pink-table-clothed heaven at Oslo Court; and a days-gone-by dining experience here sounds pretty dreamy.Head to one of London’s iconic backdrops (or even the river) for an outdoor cinema evening (but vow to pack appropriately for once and not end up cross legged and shivering). Finally, what’s a summer Sunday morning without a mooch around a car boot? Hayes Lane and Battersea are top of the list.

The Mini Lipstick Guide (and the *best* red lippy absolutely everyone needs)

*features some affiliate links and press samples, photos by Beatrice GranadosIf there’s one thing that I find really anchors an outfit to feeling like me, even on the laziest of days- it’s a great lipstick. Nothing adds a bit of unmistakable somethin’ somethin’ to a big white t-shirt and jeans, adds glamour to a slinky dress and cardigan and makes even the most tired days feel a little va va voom.

It’s the way of dressing up the most simple anything without overdressing, and has the power of making you feel pulled together on days where mascara, eyeliner and the gang have all taken to sitting this one out.

Now, this isn’t a concise guide to every great lipstick. More a love letter to *the* red lipstick I couldn’t be without (and then a few more for variety that I also really rate too). The desert island lip picks from my make up bag if you like!

The One

Now, I’ve been wearing Lisa Eldridge’s iconic ‘Velvet Ribbon’ red for the past few years now, because it truly is a dream. I’ve done my fair share of trying on the best reds, and this; by far comes up again and again as the one I pull out (or only slightly panic when I can’t find it).

It’s the ultimate pillar-box red, and sits perfectly in the middle of a blue red and a true pop of primary. It’s also one of the longest-lasting lippies I’ve worn; a creamy matte without ever being drying or dragging and yet the perfect consistency to make application a dream without liner or a brush. Lisa’s tutorials have always been the one’s I’ve watched when attempting my own makeup ahead of a special occasion, and it feels really full circle and special that now it’s her products I can pull out for those daily ‘feeling special’ moments too.

Plus, with her concession at Selfridges having recently launched, I’m very keen to try out her other shades and products- so will keep you posted on how I get on!

The Nudes

Jones Road / The Lip Tint: If I’m not going full red, I’m a huge fan of something in between a lipstick and balm; something with good pigmentation that also feels comfortable (and largely, won’t go everywhere when I’m eating lunch/dashing about). The Jones Road Lip Tint’s are amazing at this, and although I’ve only tried Nude Mauve and Just Pinky, they’re the perfect tint to throw in my bag and keep pulling out.

Laura Mercier / RoseGlow Sheer Lipstick: If you’re after a nude that, well, is nude (plus a little somethin’) this is your gal. A slightly shimmery iridescent lippy, that hydrates, adds glow as well as being buildable in the most subtle way. This isn’t the typical nude lip I’d normally go for, but it really feels like the perfect all-day makeup companion that feels a little more special than a balm, but more understated than a full colour lipstick.

  The Balm

Honest Beauty / Tinted Lip Balm: I’ve been using this tinted lip balm for a very long while now (so long that I’m a bit concerned it’s become a little bit hard to find), but it’s the perfect bitten-lip red that’s subtle, completely wearable and very moisturising too. It gives real ‘French girl’ make up to the most simple of looks, and is one (along with a few) that are always lying around in a handbag.

The Reds

Bourjois: Okay, I love me a Lisa lippy, but one brand who get a red so, so right are Bourjois (particularly their Velvet Liquid Lipstick, which has a big space in my heart). If I’m not going for a traditional lipstick and want something that is going to literally not move, this is my guy (which acts as a perfect dupe for the Sephora Lip Stain which I used to be OBSESSED with). I also love their Rouge Velvet The Lipstick which is a super creamy lippy, and always has a lovely shine to it too.

Postcards from Tuscany

(ad – press trip)(I tried to think of something a little more poetic as a title for this post, to even slightly do justice some of the beautiful moments documented in this post, but postcards will have to do for now; you get the picture- and who doesn’t love receiving a postcard?)A couple of months ago I opened my cluttered inbox and at the top saw an invitation to Tuscany with one of my favourite brands, Reformation. I feel very lucky that my job is peppered with ‘pinch me’ moments and invitations like this always feel like one of those.

Plus, Reformation have been a brand I’ve admired and loved wearing for years. From the first times I visited New York and topped my ‘to visit’ list with a visit to their Ludlow Street store, to their arrival in London and their pioneering visions on what sustainability and fashion look like (whilst also creating some of the most special things I’ve worn, which always feel amazing). Anyway, you might say I was a bit excited.

Fast forward to last week, and I was in a car on the way to Villa Arniano with Britt, Lucy, Abi, Emma and Lizzy; to an Italian farmhouse in the secluded Tuscan countryside which marries all visions of what you imagine holidaying in Italy (in the most Call Me By Your Name/Normal People way) to look like (peaches, pools and home-cooked pasta a-plenty). With panoramic views of the golden countryside flanked by almost-regal looking cypress trees- from the moment we arrived it felt like the most magical place.

As you might imagine, that magic continued long into our stay. From the initial tour of the villa, as I walked around half-asleep from the early start but not wanting to miss a moment. Catching glimpses of corners decorated by stacks of well-thumbed books, souvenirs of times well-travelled to the soundtrack of the clattering of plates and cutlery from the kitchen as our first of many family-style lunches was prepared by Maria; the most exceptional cook who could whip up a lunch for 7 in the time it would take me to probably buy, store, prepare and cook a whole Christmas dinner for 2. And what lunches they were; platters filled with chargrilled aubergine, fresh courgettes doused in lemon, homemade pasta twirled in fresh sauces; whether that’s a cacio e pepe or the kind of tomato sauce that probably has three ingredients but you’d still never be able to recreate as deliciously at home. Finished with a homemade tart and fresh fruit; the kind that somehow always tastes better in the sunshine and makes you wonder why you never try and do this kind of thing at home.

And that’s without even dipping into the villa itself- I’m sure the pictures will do more justice than my words could, but the attention to detail and consideration of every corner felt extraordinary. The vibrant colours, soft linens that swayed gently from the morning breeze and the fact it felt both completely lived in and almost museum-like was quite something. Staying here felt like stepping into someone else’s shoes for a few days; whether that was long afternoons cooking pasta at the kitchen table for lunch (oh this? I do this all the time), evenings sunken into the marshmallow-like living room sofa with a drink or mornings woken by the alarm clock buzz of crickets outside. It’s amazing how slowing down can fine tune you into paying more attention, and every detail (honestly- I think at one point I was fawning over the bistro curtains on the kitchen cupboards) felt like it was made to be soaked up.

For our last day in Tuscany we took the short drive to the beautiful city of Siena. On the eve of their annual Palio horse-race, the city was abuzz with people and communities from each of the 17 districts: gathering on streets and clinking glasses outside restaurants and bars. It was so gorgeous exploring the winding streets, lined with kerb-side tables and open piazza’s, spotting banquet tables preparing for pre-race feasts and getting to walk around the breath-taking cathedral too- the perfect afternoon for leaving our farmhouse bubble, if only for a little bit.

Anyway- I could waffle on endlessly about this little escape (and I really wanted to do a blog post about it as it was so special) but I hope it won’t be too long before I can revisit this beautiful part of the world, as I know I’ll be dreaming of those lunch spreads and twilight views for a long time.
