Dear Anant,
I'm writing to inquire in what ways World University and School might best offer MIT OCW-centric courses from, or via, edX in WUaS's 6 majors - worlduniversitandschool.org - beginning now in January 2020 (for Shahbaz Sanjer at WUaS for a free-to-students' CC-4 MIT OCW-centric Bachelor's degree in English) and especially in the autumn of 2020, potentially with 500-2000 WUaS online students, in English, as WUaS begins licensing with the state of California's BPPE? WUaS students would take these courses in 'The College at WUaS' - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/The_College_at_World_University_and_School - and from related academic wiki subject pages - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects. And WUaS would seek to begin our first Ph.D. class the following year - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Ph.D._Degrees_at_World_University_and_School (also with regards to BPPE licensing) - and also CC-4 MIT OCW-centric (perhaps in all ~32 departments there).  So would membership with edX, and getting edX course-specific links, with student registration information, that WUaS could add to our wiki pages and course catalog be the best way to proceed?. And how, for example, to chart out a 4 year online English Bachelor's degree for Shahbaz from CC-4 MIT OCW and via edX?
With regards to edX and sustainability, and the Pi digital cryptocurrency in this email thread (and Mine Pi too - https://youtu.be/MsOaC61cR3U - which cyrpto-currency is designed to be mineable by end users - eg for UBI experiments?), WUaS seeks to code our platform for our incoming matriculating students - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/You_at_World_University - and plan too potentially for matriculating students in all ~200 countries in their official and main languages, and plan also for WUaS wiki Universitans as speakers of each of all 7,111 known living languages - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Languages - and as teachers and learners in these related WUaS wiki schools (and then potentially for all 7.5 billion people, brainstorming-wise, - and explore even Universal Basic Income experiments to alleviate poverty, in all ~200 countries' languages, but also to distribute a single digital currency backed somehow by some number of ~200 countries' central banks). How WUaS would code the WUaS platform for our students, and who take WUaS courses via the edX platform, may be something we could explore coding together in these regards. This may involve communicating further with Wikidata / Wikibase (ie Lydia above) too for both the WUaS wiki platform, and all 7.5 billion people a Wikidata Q-item # (or PIN# - personal identification number based in Wikidata).
Thanks to Lee and Nakia for all your helpful communications so far (around our 45 minute phone conversation on 18 December 2019), and greetings, Sanjay! And thanks too to Larry for serving as the Chair of World University and School's Board, and to Steve Carson above for developing MIT OCW, and Peter Bothe in helping to grow WUaS in Germany (where WUaS may seek 500 English-speaking students this autumn 2020).
World Univ & Sch seeks to become the Harvard / MIT / Stanford / Oxbridge of the Internet, and in all ~200 countries and all 7,111 known living languages - so world class, and with regards to edX goals especially.
What would be the best way, please, to proceed? Thank you!
All the best, Scott

Koala Bear: "You're a robot" ... Robots - Enjoying too Angela & Victor's Yoga courses because they're freeing * See, too, a version of this "You're a robot" email here at bottom: Taiga: "Aphilo Scott MacLeod The Making of Virtual Harbin Introduction" ... ~

"You're a robot" Defining Robots and explaining freeing and humanizing aspects of being human ...  Wednesday, January 8, 2020
Good morning, Ma,
Nice to hear from Karen yesterday in the 'Online Psychoanalysis' email thread, - and in which she mentioned the word 'robot' too (perhaps re distancing idea with technologies - see email below, and her sentence "Sharing my innermost thoughts with a computer screen in between makes me feel sort of robotic" ...), ... and which you, Ma, too had said I was a number of times about me over Christmas and New Years.
A 'Desiderata' (poem) robot? (https://mwkworks.com/desiderata.html) ...
I think I also enjoy Angela & Victor's Yoga courses because they're freeing, and help one come in touch with one's 'inner body' in far-reaching and deep ways ... kind of the antithesis of being a robot ... in modernity (internetity) .... the information age (per Castells). ... (where becoming 'human' or a person may be a hippy thing here with regard to modernity's (limiting) roles, - & protesting them even?).
So I've been wondering or thinking about what you might mean in calling me a robot, Ma ... a nerd?, a geek?, a logical operator? A bot as person in the information technology revolution? A thinker in a body? An automaton? What mean you?
And is this praise? Or is this a new observation on your part - in your 'yclepting' me ( John Money's word for "to name, call or style" - http://scottmacleod.com/JohnMoneyConceptsOfDeterminism.html ) which as an exigency of being human (per Money too) is something all people do, something probably parents do, and something you and I do too :) - and what is it suggesting (or what do you mean, I wonder?)

Some DEFINITIONS I found for ROBOT:
"a machine resembling a human being and able to replicate certain human movements and functions automatically"
(Automatic means:
"working by itself with little or no direct human control")

DEFINITION: "A ROBOT is a machine designed to execute one or more tasks automatically with speed and precision. There are as many different types of robots as there are tasks for them to perform. ... An autonomous robot acts as a stand-alone system, complete with its own computer (called the controller)."

DEFINITION:
"a machine capable of carrying out a complex series of actions automatically, especially one programmable by a computer."

BOT, by contrast, in computing:"an autonomous program on a network (especially the Internet) that can interact with computer systems or users, especially one designed to respond or behave like a player in an adventure game."

(And, parenthetically, is your CAR a ROBOT? -
"Is your car a robot? NO! But a modern car is full of sensors, motors and computer power - all the kind of things we expect to see in a robot. ... So we have the idea that a robot must be able to act autonomously, controlled by an internal program, rather than being controlled (or remote-controlled) by a human.")

AVATAR BOT?

Avatar bot definition ...
"In computing, an avatar is the graphical representation of the user or the user's alter ego or character. An icon or figure representing a particular person in a video game, Internet forum, etc. ... The term "avatar" can also refer to the personality connected with the screen name, or handle, of an Internet user."
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar_(computing)

And see the video above as an example ~ "Aphilo Scott MacLeod The Making of Virtual Harbin" ...  https://youtu.be/3nhvcHw54GE ...

In suggesting that I'm a robot, Ma, and with regard to my interest in these regards in the Desiderata poem, it's the last lines that could add something new to grow the idea that people (e.g. MIT students?) can be robots (and the words, spirit, God, soul throughout poem) ...

" . . . And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy"

Just thinking about these questions (and social scientifically, and philosophically too :)
Your thoughts, Ma? Why do you say " You're a robot" to me, or call me a robot, Ma? :) Am seeking to make conscious our thinking about robots here too :) (and in a Lacanian 'speech act' way too:). Food for thought in creating & BUILDING Lego robots anew too! :)
While meditating this morning - it's a very beautiful morning here in Canyon, both looking east and west - this also came to mind re your suggesting I'm a robot: One key aspect of robots that makes them different from humans I think is agency (which could be loosely defined as free will, intentional causation, 'action or intervention, especially such as to produce a particular effect' which would include judgement and decision-making). So I wonder if, in calling me a robot, whether you're saying I don't have agency (or loosely free will)? So, are you saying, Ma, "You're not free (to act intentionally)" when you say to me "You're a robot"? :)

Looking forward to your Desiderata robot reply, MaBot :)

Love, Scott

Cousin Karen's email to me:
Dear Scotty, you flatter me to think I am of the on-line, digital generation.  In truth, I hardly do any on-line communications.  My philosophizing with my buddies is usually on the hiking trail or sitting with them in the evenings with a glass of wine in hand.  I suspect I will not be your best audience as an email correspondent.  Online interactions seem to have a distancing effect on me.  Sharing my innermost thoughts with a computer screen in between makes me feel sort of robotic ...I guess I have to accept my own personal limitations.  And as we talked about, virtual reality is a fascinating concept but pretty far afield for my daily existence. —Your multiplicity of ideas is indeed impressive and it pleases me that  you have such a wide audience for them.  Keep up the good works.  Once the political air has cleared, maybe people will have the mental energy to have clear/headed thoughts again.  You and your generation are our hope.        With regards...and a huge hug~~Cuzzin KarenAnd my reply:
see blog post today to come :)

Hi Sandy,
The printer company said my book of poetry just arrived yesterday at Tate Street in Portland at your place. Happy New Year, and Xmas, and I hope you enjoy. Did ...
"To the Dance or the Pools? ~ Virtually! How different it is to soak at Harbin Hot Springs than to realize it in virtual Reality"
... arrive?
Check out the poem on p 118, which is partly about western philosophical ideas about consciousness, as well as Harbin!

I haven't yet thought through what my favorite poems are in "To the Dance or the Pools? ~ Virtually! ... " like I did with my last year's book
"Winding Road Rainbow: Harbin, Wandering & the Poetry of Loving Bliss"
... which I gave you last year ... and which 3 are still ...
Winding Road … and something like poetry came to me / 12In the night I traveled north to Harbin / 17The Poetry Commune at Berkeley / 93- https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/02/shoebill-winding-road-rainbow-harbin.html ...

Glad to write that "To the Dance or the Pools? ~ Virtually!  ... " is the 4th book published in the Academic Press at World University and School - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html - (which press is not yet developed with machine translation).
This book is part of a project to create a realistic virtual Harbin and realistic virtual earth, and I had hoped virtual Harbin - in this book - would be accessible in Google Street View with time slider by the time of publication, but not yet! :)
How is your New Year going? Ad how are you?

Hi Sandy,

I'm writing to wish you a very happy new year, and I just put a present in the mail for you of my new book, "To the Dance or the Pools? ~ Virtually! How different it is to Soak at Harbin Hot Springs than to realize it in virtual Reality" ! Enjoy - and as you'll read below, it's not yet possible to visit in VR.
Happy New Year and Season's Greetings! My holiday letter is below. Hope to see you sooner than later (and please say thanks to Kate for the Chaga mushroom powdered tea, and the Julte tea! And the stollen and honey look wonderful too which Ma is keeping). Very nice as well to talk with you on Christmas.

Dear friends,
Happy New Year 2020! And Merry Christmas ...  A Desiderata poem focus in 2020: https://mwkworks.com/desiderata.html (https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/12/antarctica-mcmurdo-bay-merry-christmas.html)?
Global university work continues daily - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/global%20university - with regards to wiki MIT OCW-centric World University and School. And it looks like we'll collaborate with Harvard and MIT's edX in 2020 for WUaS's 2nd class for free-to-students' CC-4 MIT OCW-centric WUaS Bachelor degrees. And glad to write I just published my 4th book "To the Dance or the Pools? ~ Virtually! How different it is to Soak at Harbin Hot Springs than to realize it in virtual Reality" (http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html ~ http://amazon.com/author/scottmacleodworlduniversity) - and which I had hoped would be in Google Street View, with time slider, by the time of publication, but potentially at some point! My actual-virtual, physical-digital Harbin Hot Springs' ethnography and poetry project continues, and am hoping to write and publish a 2nd actual-virtual Harbin ethnography FROM Google Street View with time slider in the next year or two! Will create my first Scottish small pipes' album this year, as well as publish my next book of poetry in 2020 too! Still seeking a life-partner with whom to begin a family.
Happy New Year, and looking forward very much to seeing you in 2020! Here’s a poem from my new book with same name as title of book - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/11/chameleon-vision-poem-to-dance-or-pools.html?m=0 !
Is 2020 the year of the robot (or the 2020s) - and at World University and School too? And will the 2020s be the decade for Actual-Virtual, Physical-Digital innovations, and Robot-Avatar Bot innovations too? And will we all have 'Avatar Bots' like email addresses (e.g. see the avatars in "Aphilo Scott MacLeod The Making of Virtual Harbin Introduction" - https://youtu.be/3nhvcHw54GE) that correspond to physical robots even - and conceptually with robots that we can first make in Lego Robotics' WeDo 2.0, Mindstorms EV3, and Lego Spike Prime Robotics, and then in Google Street View with time slider / with Brick Street View for robotics design? I'd chance to make these predictions.
World University and School is also seeking to plan for, brainstorming-wise, coding for all 7.5 billion people for the following reasons.
All 7.5 billion people, each a Personal Identification Number PIN# (instead of a Wikidata Q-item # number) for:

i) wiki Universitians in 7,111 known living languages, and matriculated students in all ~200 countries,
ii) Avatar Bot Electronic Medical Records, with genetic therapies, and for molecular tele-robotic surgery, for ex.,
iii) Universal Basic Income (UBI) experiments (and to alleviate poverty), and to DISTRIBUTE a single crypto-currency backed by some number of ~200 countries' central banks (where the Euro is in 19 out of 28 EU countries, and backed by their central banks in one way or another) ... and potentially with UBI experiment recipients able, for example, to mine the "Mine Pi" crypto-currency (as a mineable single crypto-currency), developed by Stanford graduates, by clicking on the 'lightning button' brainstorming-wise.
iv) a single family tree for genealogy research as in WikiTree (https://www.wikitree.com), and for aggregating DNA samples too (see item 2 again) ... and for innovative genealogical research.

In what ways could WUaS plan in Wikdata for all 7.5 billion people each a Wikidata Q-item # and for the above reasons and many more (and keeping in sync with Wikipedia's mission of "the sum of all human knowledge" where all 7.5 billion people generate this with their language, for example)?

See, too these 'longevity' blog posts here - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/longevity - with interesting prospects for extending life or reversing aging, beyond 122 years of age with genetic therapies.

It’s been another generative year for ideas in terms of daily blog posts - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com - as well.
Happy New Year and best wishes to all of you and your loved ones in this holiday season!

3D interactive virtual worlds

In Skype today with Peter Bothe (and moi, Scott MacLeod):

Hello Scott!
Here is my first wooden house I build in SecondLife. Building stuff in SL works much better now.

Scott:
Beautiful, Peter - what is your avatar name? (Mine again is Aphilo Aarde) ... and found and blog posted some realistic "Google Street View in Second Life" Youtubes today - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/01/taiga-aphilo-scott-macleod-making-of.html ... I haven't been into Second Life recently at all ... shall we meet there soon-ish? Happy New Year!

Just searched on Peter Bothe' in 2 different search opportunities within Second Life ... but didn't find you ... (And how's your Android smartphone working out too?)

I'm in Second Life at the moment ... if you happen to be 'in-world' ... Aphilo Aarde again is my avatar's name ...

Peter, 11:49 AM:
I have currently several accounts in SL. This is just my test account and I might delete it. I have also made an account for KLUBTALK. You better follow that one. I try to start a conversation group in SL or OpenSim. OpenSim is less crowded with 'weird' avatars (nude, oversized, furry...), but the servers are often slow and not very responsive, sometimes not even reachable. I will probably give SL a chance first. If it doesn't work out, I might switch to OpenSim. The biggest task is still ahead. Explaining to KT members how SL works, how to operate the viewer, how to setup your avatar and get the audio (Voice) going.

Scott:

I just messaged you at KLUBTALK in SL ... And I've taught a course on Harvard's island in SL for many years ... "Society and Information Technology" ... shall I explore teaching it again as an entree for KLUBTALK members?

Peter:
BTW, earlier I watched you WUaS YouTube video. Your stream seems to work again. The quality was good.

Scott:
The course I've taught much on Harvard's virtual island here

Yes, thanks so much for troubleshooting the WUaS Youtube recording ... it's working relatively glitch-free again !

Heading out of SL soon ... (since you don't seem to be in-world at present - with your Peter B KLUBTALK name)

Peter:
I have other plans for KLUBTALK. We will more likely do excursions in SL. Found some interesting places already. I'm also planning role-play setups for the future. The main goal of KLUBTALK is still improving German or English in a conversational context.

Scott:
Did you receive my email to edX president and MIT Prof of EECS Anant Agarwal today? (I'm assuming you, and Lydia, did).

Excursions are a good idea.

Peter, 11:59 AM:
So far I found places like 'Berlin 1920' and 'Victorian London'

Scott:
it's the two channels for communication - group voice and group text chat - in Second Life that make it a fascinating platform - 'flow' experiences in sharing ideas - and with avatar bots (per my experience in a Harvard course in SL in ~ 2007 ) ...

Harvard's virtual island is called Berkman Island (like the Harvard Law center) ... if you want to explore, and it has a sandbox for building projects ... and I just searched on the Exploratorium museum island called Splo island, but couldn't gain access today.

Peter, 12:01 PM
Well, I don't want to do text chat in SL. It has to be voice chat or nothing!

Scott, 12:02 PM:
voice chat came in around 2007 ... and is somehow 'amplified' with avatar bots ... differently from 10 person group video! (in my experience)

Peter, 12:02 PM
So far I have only SPOKEN to a few people in SL. Most use text chat.

Scott, 12:03 PM:
In this 2009 video in SL of the Gardens of Bliss and re my Harbin project - https://youtu.be/3nhvcHw54GE

 - you can see the video making potential, as well as the voice speaking symbol above mine and Lizzy Ha's avatar heads, when we're speaking ...

I find Sl is very stimulating to people's imaginations ... and that KlubTalk people will like it, and that's it's become more predictable and reliable with time, but is still a bit involved to get into, and it requires a fairly new computer too ...

Peter, 12:06 PM
...I'm currently working on a better avatar. Found some free or open source mesh avatars, but getting free and fitting clothes is almost impossible. Most free stuff in SL is for classic avatars.

Scott, 12:09 PM:
On Anteater Island years' ago - the American Anthropological Associations' virtual island at the time (thanks to Tom Boellstorff) - I began to build a Harbin Hot Springs' gate house ... I don't think these builds are up any more ... And I also built the beginnings of a Harbin warm pool in OpenSim years ago ... nothing lasts long in SL ... so can be not worth investing time creating, for ex ...

This Harbin gate house URL in Google Street View -  http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg  - however is fairly stable ... eternally? to be seen :)

Peter, 12:10 PM
I have to go now. I will invite you when we have sorted out the technical side of the operation. And I'm still looking for a not so busy place to hold our meetings since I'm not going to buy or rent any SL land. Would you know of any 'free' spaces in SL where you can meet and even sit down. I've already got a SL whiteboard and chairs.

Scott, 12:10 PM:
Accessible from http://www.scottmacleod.com/ActualVirtualHarbinBook.html ... see you later !

Harvard's virtual island?

Peter, 12:11 PM
...but does it have 'rooms'?

Scott, 12:11 PM:
I think this is the SL URL - http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Berkman/90/60/25 ...

Second Life Maps | Berkman
http://maps.secondlife.com
Not sure about sitting down ... it had a building or two, but they're clunky to get in and out of ...

Peter, 12:12 PM
I don't want to sit in an open space where everyone can disturb us.

12:13 PM
And Harvard's virtual island is fairly open ... just tell KlubTalk folks a Second Life time which is Pacific Time ... and this URL ... avatars may have to stand ... but sitting may be possible too ... check it out ...

do some reconnaissance ... may get 'griefed' like my class was ... but maybe not!

Peter, 12:14 PM
Ok, got to go now. See you!

12:14 PM
See you!
12:19 PM

* * * * Family conversation about connecting, as well as the internet and robotics!
Karen Leighty4:02 PM (2 hours ago)to me
Dear Scotty, you flatter me to think I am of the on-line, digital generation. With regards...and a huge hug~~Cuzzin Karen

*
Dear, dear Karen,
Thanks so much for your email, and sharing your thoughts electronically! Am hoping I can seek & find a life partner for hikes and evening imbibing and conversation, about things intimate even - and even beginning a family! Am circulating in these regards - on hikes + .
Humans communicate ... and newly via the internet ... but perhaps you and I won't communicate all that much electronically, - but possibly on hikes in the future in DC (or the Bay Area even?) ... (and long into the future re longevity questions too?) I write / communicate / use language sometimes when I worry or am happy ... and with friends ... so via the internet for simplicity's sake, or face-to-face in person, it's all good ... :)
Interesting that Lee Rainie and Pew Research don't call any generation the internet generation, or rather "on-line, digital generation," but rather the millennials for 23-39 year olds (re research) - https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2019/09/09/us-generations-technology-use/ - and generation Z for 18-23 year olds (and probably re political research questions esp.).
Re the internet furtherAm seeking to explore virtual Reality anew ... and re my actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic project, and my new book too - https://www.amazon.com/author/scottmacleodworlduniversity - "To the Dance or the Pools? ~ Virtually!: How different it is to soak at Harbin Hot Springs, than to realize it in virtual Reality" (which you have) ... where the poem on p 118 is about philosophical ideas about consciousness too, even!
And while I teach about some of this - http://worlduniversityandschool.org/InfoTechNetworkSocGlobalUniv.html - I do also find the internet fascinating, and what people do on it, and how people feel/think about it - and fascinating too to read that you find the web to have a distancing effect.
Thanks for your thinking and feedback, Karen!
With regards...and hugs~~ ScottyWill blog tomorrow - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/12/wild-pomegranate-burchellia-bubalina.html?m=0 (Happy New Year!) - about my academic vision, teaching and research, and re actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs esp. :)

* *  Wednesday, January 8, 2020

Love, Scott

films in nature ('thin-film interference'): 'Film Making' wiki subject at World Univ & Sch * * * Online psychoanalysis & psychiatry in many languages? (and at WUaS) * * * Re (continued) - Exploring a digital humanities' approach to a realistic virtual ear

Hi Luke,

Nice to talk with you on the flight to Oakland from St. Louis. I like the wry humor, and the dialogue, and focus of 'Antique Humans' a lot - https://youtu.be/vrJxPc12ndA ... I wonder if we figure out how to reverse aging per MIT and Harvard Professor of Genetics' George Church (search on Woolly Mammoth in this blog post - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/01/geyser-time-to-license-wuas-with-cas.html - and watch the George Church interview to get an idea about how it would work; see the 'longevity' label in my blog too :)), and live beyond the 122 years of Jeanne Calment, whether you'll have amazing new material to develop in your film's (satirical?) 'social commentary' :)
Will check out Torbjørn C. Pedersen's "Once upon a Saga" further - http://www.onceuponasaga.dk/blog - as well.
Here's the 'Film Making' wiki subject at World Univ & Sch - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Film_Making (https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects - and planned in many languages). Check out the MIT OCW, which will eventually be for credit, and will grow too. Would you and your girlfriend like to explore teaching an online internet film-making course, with students in their homes, brainstorming-wise?
Would be curious to learn from your girlfriend and you how you'd suggest coding a new online platform for what she sells, like crafts, and perhaps with regard also to Actual-Virtual, Physical -Digital developments - and in the WUaS Bookstore / WUaS Press - https://twitter.com/WUaSPress.

Looking forward to staying in touch. If you make it to the Bay Area, and would like to sleep on a mattress in my front room (in Canyon CA 94516), you're welcome to. (Please let me know if you receive this if you can).
Friendly regards, Scott

Online psychoanalysis & psychiatry in many languages? (and at WUaS)

Hi Sid (Pin), Ma (Janie), ... and All,
(see, too - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/12/pelican-just-had-vision-for.html)

Re previous questions of online psychoanalysis in many languages in this email thread, am curious too to study in these regards culture*identity questions. And music psycho-therapeutic questions too ... How best to plan for psychoanalysis with AI machine learning chat bots' too?

Am curious about how this Stanford psychiatry "Pushing the Envelope" conference - https://twitter.com/_Roberts_Laura/status/1214035524761063425?s=20 (check this out, as well as the head of Stanford Psychiatry, that is the Chairman, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences) - might be a collaboration opportunity? Sid - and what are some of your thoughts about online psychoanalysis in your role in HHS? Ed, how does Kaiser Permenente do psychiatry differently from Stanford psychiatry (online too) ... and possibly re electronic medical records as well ... and even brainstorming-wise re avatar bot electronic medical records? And Byron, at UCSF psychiatry?

Re longevity questions, see this post from recently on Sa 4 Jan 2020 - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/01/geyser-time-to-license-wuas-with-cas.html.

And see in this blog entry the George Church interview - "George Church Talks Age Reversal and Woolly Mammoth DNA" - https://www.pbs.org/wnet/amanpour-and-company/video/george-church-talks-age-reversal-and-woolly-mammoth-dna/) - re, in brief, how adding enzymes to aging DNA will extend life, and that this is already in clinical trials with mice and dogs - and on fast track. Fascinating ... will probably take much time to refine ...

Hi Hugh,

It's the time slider aspect of such a Google Street View-centric #RealisticVirtualEarthForHistory (https://twitter.com/hashtag/RealisticVirtualEarthForHistory?src=hashtag_click) concept, which, when mature, and when we can simply enter into King John's world (the subject of your upcoming Oxford UP book), for example, based on the developing evidence (and iteratively), that digital humanities' fostering will indeed be flourishing.

Thanks again, Scott

Exploring a digital humanities' approach to a realistic virtual earth in Google Street View

Dear Jean and Hugh,

Very nice to see you over the holidays. And Happy New Year - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/12/wild-pomegranate-burchellia-bubalina.html ! Did you have a good holiday? Welcome to Miami, Jean (tomorrow, and tomorrow, and ... :)!

Hugh, at the brunch on 1/1/20 (at Ann's in Pgh), your mother suggested communicating a bit about your new director-ship (https://humanities.as.miami.edu/about-the-center/letter-from-the-director/index.html) position in the Humanities' Program at the University of Miami (https://humanities.as.miami.edu/about-the-center/staff-bios/hugh-thomas/index.html), - and brainstorming-wise, potentially about exploring a digital humanities' approach to a realistic virtual earth in Google Street View. How best to make these very easy and useful - and in exploring collaboration with Google even? Could we begin, brainstorming-wise, with your mother's writing her memoirs in the next 2 months in conversation with you in the SideBar of Google Street View? And in conversation with the University of Miami's Humanities' Program?
Jean, am curious about the potential to write one's memoirs in the sidebar of Google Street View, and potentially to add photos/videos to the main part of Street View too, and then to print to book from there. This would also be useful and potentially as easy as in a Word / GDocs' document - and for students of history, and anthropology, and the social sciences, too.
Here's a MIT example of printing from the Google platform, called Paper Phone -
Paper Phone is not a joke. It is real...

... with additional benefits of Google Translate's ~100 languages. (Paper Phone has a goal of offering a paper to online addiction, so potentially psychotherapeutically; see 'labels').

Developing this approach to Digital Humanities in a realistic virtual earth would probably involve typing into Google Street View in the SideBar - and even from one's smartphone - and as a WRITING research tool especially. (There's much room for parallel STEM developments in Street View in these regards too, and potentially even for genealogical research with genetics).
And with regards too, brainstorming-wise, to a digital humanities' focus of online university libraries potentially in all ~7,111 known living languages - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Languages - (planned at World Univ & Sch - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Library_Resources), and with regard also to openness where MacMillan is closing down a bit -

A Google-centric Digital Humanities' approach as part of your Directorship, Hugh, and brainstorming-wise?
Do I have your correct email, Jean? Please let me know if you received this email as well.
Warm regards, Scott

Welcome to Miami, Jean!

As a follow up, with some further ideas, might it be possible for the Humanities' Center at Univ of Miami to develop a Digital Humanities' wing, and in collaboration with Google, Hugh?

And in regards, conceptually, to your writing your memoirs, Jean, in Google Street View, and students doing humanities' work newly in Street View too, it would be like my adding my first book "Naked Harbin Ethnography" to the SideBar in Google Street View (or coming into conversation with it in new ways once in Street View), and then adding photos / videos, patching them together into a realistic virtual earth ... and then potentially printing anew from Street View!

Here's the Harbin Gate as a start in Google Street View ~ http://tinyurl.com/p62rpcg (accessible from ~ https://twitter.com/HarbinBook ~ and ~ http://bit.ly/HarbinBook ~).

Cheers!, Scott :)

Online real, real time Virtual Choir in many time zones?

Dear Bruce and UUCPA, (and FUCoP - 1st UU Church of Pgh choir members),
- Unitarian Universalist Church of Palo Alto
- First UU Church of Pittsburgh

Happy New Year (see letter below)!

Would be interested in exploring singing remotely (from here in Canyon 94516) in an exploratory way, and brain storming-wise on Thursdays and Sundays, for example - and with FUCoP in creative new ways in a different time zone (EST).

With regards to the idea of developing a virtual choir, e.g. building on Eric Whitacre's virtual choir work, and which I've touched on before with UUCPA, I just shared this with some of FUCoP:

"I'm also writing to let you know about this Virtual Choir wiki subject at MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Virtual_Choir - for open teaching and learning, and which I'm developing. World Univ & Sch would like to facilitate online choirs and music-making in real, real time, as well as much else musically :) - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Music_School. (I've sung in the 1st UU choir of Pgh in 2006-2007, and in the Unitarian Universalist Choir of Palo Alto's choir about 2 years ago for a semester, which is near Stanford). It would be great to explore World Univ & Sch ONLINE musically as it develops further.

UUCPA, did I read correctly that you might be heading toward real, real time online music-making with a new device on the piano?

I'd also like to e-introduce you to Kris Rust, musical director of 1st UU Church Pgh and some of the singers in this UU choir whom I heard sing on Christmas Eve, which was great!

Happy singing, and am hoping you're all feeling better soon.

Musical regards, Scott

Brakeley Briscoe fundraising? - and World University and School

Hi M,

Very nice to hear your variety of thoughts yesterday evening in words, and with regards to the complexities of family too. You're smart and I appreciate too your nuanced caring understandings.  Glad we may be communicating over the upcoming years, and centuries even!

Just sent this below to Alden (thought I had included Marianne's email too, but it turned out to be Alden's 2nd email), George Brakeley and Larry and all of Brakeley Briscoe at info @ BrakeleyBriscoe ...

Am hoping I hear back positively from George first within 2 business days (by Tuesday afternoon) or even today!

Love, Scott

Brakeley Briscoe & World University and  School

Dear Executive Chair Brakeley, President Marianne Briscoe, Ph. D., and Executive VP Alden F. Briscoe, & Brakeley Briscoe Associates,

I'm reaching out to you at Brakeley Briscoe, and as president of CC-4 MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School, in some need for your fundraising and management expertise - http://www.brakeleybriscoe.com/index.php?/brakeley/content/history/ - http://www.brakeleybriscoe.com/index.php?/brakeley/bio/abriscoe/ - as well as your capital campaign strategies - http://www.brakeleybriscoe.com/index.php?/brakeley/capital_campaigns/.

If we proceed, and as friends of Alden and Marianne, I wonder if they might play backbencher or weighty Friends' roles (in a Friendly / Quaker sense) in all of this. I'm also including Larry Viehland  in this email, who is the Chair of the Board, and Chief Financial Officer of World University and School.

I'm attaching a PDF of World University and School's (WUaS) 10% fundraising facilitation letter for your information, and as a starting place for related conversation. Here too is the

World University Foundation wiki page - ... https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/World_University_Foundation.

How might we best proceed? Shall we explore heading together toward the first $1 billion, and then talk about a trillion? World University and School's initial need is for $5,000 to begin licensing with the state of California's BPPE as WUaS seeks our 2nd online undergraduate class in the autumn of 2020 for free-to-students' MIT OCW-centric Bachelor degrees, first in English.

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you, Executive Chair Brakeley.

Sincerely, Scott MacLeod

Doug,
Nice to meet you with my mother on Lingrove near the Xmas party.
At Xmas Eve dinner at Koehler's I mentioned connecting with Robert Zembowicz on Twitter, who is the CTO at Vanguard Mutual Funds I think, and Tweets much about machine learning - https://twitter.com/rzembo ...

Here are some ways that Robert Zembowicz and World University and School may head together with regards to machine learning, particularly in the Google ecosystem -  https://twitter.com/rzembo/status/1137763790387326976https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1200232823757496325?s=20https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1200228375786221568?s=20

Check out too the Machine Learning at MIT OCW-centric wiki World University and School - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Machine_Learning (https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects) - and the MIT OCW courses that will eventually be for credit.

Mark,

Thanks for your email, and congratulations on your new house and your move to Portland, Maine! I admire your country-hopping re your business perspicacity especially! Am impressed with your DNA focus and learning. This Harvard and MIT Professor of Genetics, George Church, may lead the way to reversing aging -

And planning for all 7.5 billion people, each a Wikidata Q-item #, in WikiTree for a single family tree, would benefit this remarkable time of genetic research on so many fronts, but is on the back burner at WUaS presently; but WUaS is planning 4 initial reasons for 7.5 billion people each a Wikidata Q-item # as you may have seen - https://worlduniversityandschool.blogspot.com/2019/11/minutes-for-annual-meeting-on-saturday.html - and one other for genetics. I think all 7.5 billion people might want to find out their history from their genetics, given the opportunity, and computing would facilitate aggregating this for further learning so well - and is also a remarkably big market for genetics and genealogy as well. Perhaps all the genetic data of 7.5 billion people will help us prolong life beyond the 122 years of Jeanne Calment, so that we can be communicating about family history long into the future, Mark!
"The MacLeods -- the genealogy of a clan" (1969) - what a great idea for a book! Looks like the nearest copy of "Clan MacLeod History' (1969) to where I live is too far in Sacramento. You could inquire with - Tammie Vawter <mrs_califmacleod@yahoo.com> - who is Mrs California MacLeod at many, many west coast Highland Games, hostessing the tent. Have typed in but not begun "MacLeod Society Worldwide" - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Subjects - and perhaps World Univ & Sch will come into it - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Library_Resources .Looking forward to seeing your new house, Mark! And congratulations!

Scott,
Thanks for the note and congrats on the new book!
Glad to hear your mother will have her DNA analysed. I'm gaining new insights every day by reviewing the DNA results from 6 known family members, including you, and 2 'newfound' family members. I'm writing up the results and will share a draft soon to get your feedback. I've recently submitted a new DNA sample to FTDNA for analysing my 'Y-DNA'. It apparently can look back more generations than the Ancestry autosomal DNA analysis, which is supposedly limited to about 6 generations.
BTW, as I've said before, I think the family tree idea for 7.5B people is ludicrous. Family trees, after all, are for ancestors, not living people. And they are hard to build and take serious research. I'd drop it.
And speaking of genealogy, can you find an online 'ebook' of this: The MacLeods -- genealogy of a clan (https://www.worldcat.org/title/macleods-the-genealogy-of-a-clan/oclc/116772)?
The hardcopy of this book is available in better libraries and on Amazon for $130!
I moved to Portland, Maine this week to an area of town called Munjoy Hill. I look forward to showing you our new house someday.

Haven't yet compared Ancestry.com with WikiTree for exploring comparatively the Chadbourne line to Edward I yet! Thoughts here? Methinks both will have something to offer differentially, and will be helpful and edifying to compare!

Mark MacLeod:

Perhaps not a bad idea to try both. I'd wager that Ancestry's database is larger but I've found it less helpful as you get further back in time. Records get pretty sparse before about 1850 in the UK and Canada. They just didn't keep records then, especially for poor people! For example, Scotland's first census was 1841.

Interesting - and blogged about some of this and more today - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2020/01/geyser-time-to-license-wuas-with-cas.html. Am wondering how DNA will make it possible to head back 700,000 years genetically - and for family genealogy research too? - per George Church's interview here re age reversal and the Wooly Mammoth ... No records in Scotland before the 1840s even in the Kirks and fronts of bibles? Must be bones/human remains, and bas reliefs in limited supply too ...

Seeking to get a start on my taxes, Mark - with TurboTax! (I'm in awe of how you've navigated between Canada, USA, Scotland and Norway +,  in these regards) .

Cheers, Scott

Great interview with  LEGO Education President Esben Staerk Joergensen re new STEAM Lego Robotics' kit "Spike Prime"(where word 'robotics" isn't mentioned) ... and where the kit is designed for 2 students in the classroom working together (at 3 mins. mark) - so STEAM refers here to 2 people ... and potentially in a realistic virtual earth ... with two students in their homes at WUaS too??? ... and to build a Taj Mahal (at 7 minutes' maker)? :) Learning through play and hands' on ... irresistible ...

The use of LEGO Mindstorms to create a model of the surgical robot arm for the education of medical students
Michał Rudnik / Piotr Krzysztof WaleckiPublished Online: 2019-07-10 | DOI: https://doi.org/10.1515/bams-2019-001130,00 € / $42.00 / £23.00

AbstractThe aim of the work is to assess the use of LEGO-based robotics in the education of medical students. Training on specialized robotic surgery simulators is available only to a small group of specialists. The LEGO Mindstorms was used to create a model of the surgical robot arm. The model is controlled by a specially prepared panel created in the LabVIEW. The functionality of the model of a surgical robot arm allows people who have not been using these robots to become familiar with the basics of their operation. Medical students using the arm will be able to observe structural problems: the stiffness of construction, or its utility, the range of movements and its limitations, motion and force control using different robotic manipulators. The use of a modular computer programming language and a modular building platform problem in LEGO Education contributes to the development of critical thinking and problem solving, and these skills are useful to physicians during their work.- https://www.degruyter.com/view/j/bams.2019.15.issue-2/bams-2019-0011/bams-2019-0011.xml
