Nuku Hiva (Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia): Herman Melville's Life in time line from Oxford University Press ... And here's a kind of realistic avatar bot animation of Max Ehrmann reading his poem "The Desiderata" ... Will we be able to talk with Me
Hi M,
Just found this Time Line of Herman Melville's life from Oxford UP on Twitter:
https://t.co/5ap5e2PjHO
— Oxford Academic (@OUPAcademic) August 2, 2019 https://twitter.com/OUPAcademic/status/1157297516041269248 ... (and re-Tweeted here - https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch) ...
https://blog.oup.com/2019/08/the-life-and-work-of-herman-melville/
It touches on his time in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, his shipping out on at least a third whaler, (and later one of which is captained by his brother) and his befriending of reclusive Nathaniel Hawthorne and their visiting together at ...
Monument Mountain in Great Barrington, Massachusetts (which I then found in Street View)
https://www.google.com/maps/place/Monument+Mountain+Reservation/@42.245797,-73.3399862,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0xda6d5b4b84740301!8m2!3d42.245797!4d-73.3399862 (glad to kind of travel there, but not year with Streetview's TIME SLIDER).
Cool. I haven't yet looked up the Typee valley in Polynesia in Street View but just found in a related vein the island of Nuku Hiva - https://www.google.com/maps/place/Nuku+Hiva/@-8.8733092,-140.2690106,11z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x764a7a43a22ef6e3:0xc1eee905826f07bc!8m2!3d-8.8604808!4d-140.1420882 - since "the narrative is partly based on the author's actual experiences on the island Nuku Hiva in the South Pacific Marquesas Islands (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typee) in his novel "Typee."
This slide in the OUP timeline - https://blog.oup.com/2019/08/the-life-and-work-of-herman-melville/?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=linkpost&utm_campaign=owc&utm_content=tweet2#__prclt=0DodNYWS (which I just added to archive.org https://web.archive.org/web/*/https://blog.oup.com/2019/08/the-life-and-work-of-herman-melville/) - also touches on Melville's time in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, which I found in Google Street View, with TIME SLIDER with about 5 years in the past decade ! - https://www.google.com/maps/place/Pittsfield,+MA+01201/@42.4484567,-73.252963,3a,75y,128.97h,90t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1swsJjPrZKynG72urUCM-Qbw!2e0!5s20170701T000000!7i13312!8i6656!4m5!3m4!1s0x89e744bbcf99cc3f:0xd78834ed84912f23!8m2!3d42.4500845!4d-73.2453824 - and which raises questions about how at some point to go back to the 1840s in Street View to talk with Melville in the places he traveled to, and for historical re-enactments and history with avatar bot generation even?
And here's a kind of realistic avatar bot animation of Max Ehrmann reading his poem "The Desiderata"

Will we be able to talk with Melville interactively like this eventually, - and in situ (place)? :)
The OUP time line also touches on his financial hardships, as well as losses of family ... interesting Oxford Univ Press perspectives. O modernity!
This might all be interesting for you if you are docent-ing at the Cuttyhunk Island Historical Society ...
The OUP Melville timeline ends with the centennial of his birth in 1919: "critics praised the prose as Shakespearean. Melville remains in the American consciousness primarily as the author of Moby-Dick, and the God-defying Captain Ahab’s pursuit of the whale is seen as an archetypal confrontation with the inscrutable powers of the universe" - (and there's a Shakespeare label in my blog too - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Shakespeare - as well as a wiki subject - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Shakespeare,_William - at World University and School). So this 2019 year is the bicentennial of Herman Melville's birth! Cool. (Won't add the "Nontheist Friend" label to this blog post:).
It's interesting to me too re my upcoming book of poetry (my 3rd) - "To the Dance or the Pools? ~ Virtually!" - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/07/north-cascades-national-park-next-book.html?m=0 (first mention of this title in this blog post) - as well as my eventual 2nd actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic book / project - which is and will be also visitable in Street View .. and potentially for history, re English literature, as well as re anthropology / ethnography.
AM CURIOUS TOO how my blog (and Twitter streams) might be used for a kind of literary reconstruction of my writing 200 years from my birth ... and also how a realistic virtual earth might open ways to visiting some of the places I write about, being there, and even talking with folks in them, say Sunheart at Harbin in 2012. Fascinating (consciousness-wise too - as writing? consciousness as writing) to see this Tweet this morning from David Prindle in his Twitter newspaper mentioning Sunheart and Scott and my blog post from February 2019 - David Prindle

In a way, am riffing here with this OUP Tweet about Melville's life -

How much do you know about Herman Melville? We've created a timeline looking at his life and work, ranging from his time working on whale ships to personal tragedies.

Now I have a Scottish Small Pipes' B flat chanter allowing me to play in tune with Great Highland Bagpipe chanter, as well as GHB practice chanters, in addition to an A chanter and a D chanter.
Next step in Tune Tutorials, besides recording the remaining tunes in the CoP Blue Tutorial, Volume 3, is to provide a SSP tutorial for using the combination drone on the Walsh Small Pipes for each of the 3 chanters, and re the chord I came newly make with the drones. This will inform too which tunes in which keys of GHB sheet music one can play with the SSP. :)
And how best to build toward A level piping for my SSP CD in 2020 as well, and on all 3 chanters newly! Playing and practicing!

Hi Barbara, Heather, Patti and All,
Glad to have recorded newly some Scottish Small Pipes' Tune Tutorials on both A & D chanters both in Google video Hangouts, which ends tomorrow!, but will be replaced with Google Meet, I think. I've recorded all of The College of Piping's Green Tutor Volume 1 in A & D here - https://www.youtube.com/user/sgkmacleod - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/07/cape-cod-national-seashore-video-tune.html - and here - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/07/burn-watercourse-playing-practicing-and.html - with some photos of you as well. And I've recorded thus far half of The College of Piping's Blue Tutor Volume 3 on the A chanter newly with WavePad (with much better audio re MacBook Air's microphone than in Hangouts) and then uploaded these to SoundCloud - https://soundcloud.com/scottmacleod-com. May record too The College of Piping's 'Gold' (yellow actually, probably because a gold cover would have been too dear:) Tutor Volume 4 - Piobaireachd (classical music) - too on all 3 chanters. Will add to Scottish Small Pipes wiki subject at World University and School - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Scottish_smallpipes_and_borderpipes - and perhaps Bagpipe Tutorials too - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Bagpipe_Tutorials.
Just received a new Walsh SSP chanter in B flat from Antigoniah, Nova Scotia, Canada in the mail, I'm very glad to say, so now I can play with the Great Highland Bagpipe on the SSPs ... eg with learners on the GHB practice chanter +!
Next step in said SSP Tune Tutorials, besides recording the remaining tunes in the CoP Blue Tutorial, Volume 3, is to create a SSP tutorial for using the combination drone on the Walsh Small Pipes for each of the 3 chanters, and re the chord I came newly make with the drones. This will probably inform too which tunes in which keys of GHB sheet music - that is, in The College of Piping's Tutors where all 3 chanters can play all sheet music, but upon adding the chord drone using the combo drone, I think only certain tunes on the sheet music will be playable (depending on the key they're in - where

And how best to build toward A level piping for my SSP CD in 2020 as well, and on all 3 chanters newly! Playing and practicing!
May explore writing out bagpipe sheet music in the free MuseScore too and re OpenBand Music - since MuseScore specifically has a bagpipe register (but writing doublings and grace notes isn't yet obvious)!Seeking to create a wonderful SSP "Honey in the Bag" CD in 2020 as well.

The Great Highland Bagpipe is in B flat, and that's it, folks! But it's a funny B flat because it's called Piper's A, and rather than being tuned to 440 Hz (and its octave variants), it can be tuned to around 466 (some variation here, waver in the air too:), but, believe it or not, - around 1996, the Shott's and Dykehead Pipe Band won the Worlds (World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow with a 496 tuning) ... So the GHB's 3 drones are also tuned to Piper's A, that is B flat - and there's 1 bass drone and 2 tenor drones. So, on the GHB chanter, there's a low A and and high A, and the 3 GHB drones are tuned to A - well B flat again, and then there's the skirl and its overall remarkable sound, and much more in these regards. Pipers, I'll interpret here, went back to basics, say beginning in the 1950s with the College of Piping's Green Tutor, and codified fingering, as well as began focusing in depth on tuning and reeds and so much related - and further created their own culture. And GHB pipes spend much much much time on reeds - it's really quite an art. But how did Piper's A get to be a B flat? My hypothesis: in that not playing with other orchestral instruments to speak of, GHB piping culture sought a brighter and brighter (so sharper sound), and gradually through the centuries even, it migrated up a half step, with nothing to bring nomenclature in line with tuning forks. But I look forward to other interpretations! Piping culture and Pipers have long been in their own musical world ... and this continues through cultural time, and the centuries! Independence from musical orthodoxy? Sort of by default (because I dare say, some Scots would look a little askance at Piper's A being a B flat - since Scottish society seeks to integrate with societies in general, and even 'society' around the world. (A counter-perspective, anyone?:)
Here's a taste of the Worlds from 2018 - https://youtu.be/MU9-eMKLggA - by the Vale of Atholl pipe band (you live on Athol avenue, Bruce and Patti, n'est-ce pas?:), for the B flat ... as well as a glimpse into a main form of modern-day GHB bagpiping 'culture.' And The Worlds are coming up again - https://www.theworlds.co.uk/ - on 8/16 & 17! Will anyone be in Scotland then? And attending even?
The Scottish Small Pipes are new (and according to some they began in a new way in the early 1980s - around '83, I've heard) - using the same fingering as the GHB, but border pipes, which are akin, have been around for centuries ... and re https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Scottish_smallpipes_and_borderpipes ... Seeking some further versions of this history at some point. And one of these summers, I may travel to Walsh Bagpipes on Nova Scotia, to learn further of this history.
A little GHB ethno-musical exegesis from an American (lots of Rs in this pronunciation) perspective, :)ScottMay blog about some of this tomorrow - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/bagpiping - :)- http://scottmacleod.com/piping.htm -- https://amazon.com/author/scottmacleodworlduniversity - - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Bagpipe_Tutorials -

Collared kingfisher: Democratic Debates 1 & 2 * * * Hi @neha @PeterMcCormack what are your thoughts - re Central Banks of India and Bangladesh - and re a large 'field site' to test a single #cryptocurrency backed by 1-2 central banks in Bangladesh & India
Hi M,
How was your day? And how was the debate ?
Methinks I'm leaning toward in this order -
Elizabeth Warren - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Warren Joe Biden - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_BidenKamala Harris - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamala_Harris Andrew Yang - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Yang
Cory Booker - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cory_BookerPete Buttigieg - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Buttigieg (and possibly as a running mate with Elizabeth Warren)
- after this 2nd Democratic Debate (2 - https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/democratic-debate-july-31-2019/index.html), and also think Joe Biden could be most likely to beat the current president, and is among the smartest and most accomplished.
They're all really smart, but Biden is very smart as a politician, in my experience, and especially re image-making (which is a key point for Manuel Castells in the current book by him that I'm reading "Communication Power" and with which I agree; if elections are like horse races, per Castells too, I think Biden could most likely and masterfully win this one in 2020). I also appreciate his vast experience in the Obama administration as VP, closest to the office of the presidency of all these candidates. And I don't think he would waffle out over 4 or 8 years as I wondered about on Cuttyhunk with you and Peg. What do you think? He also knows the language of these debates, and these politics re presidential politics. And having been Obama's VP, I think he would successfully work against racism - and to "heal the racial divide" per a question I just heard in the debates. I agree too with Andrew Yang re both UBI and technology and re risk to jobs, and health care too, but I think the way he presents his ideas are as outliers, and too far from Biden's and many center. Andrew is also thinking about the future re information technology in more sensible ways than the rest of them. I like too Elizabeth Warren's re-framing re the big picture, and feistiness (reminding me a bit of Dad even). Hopefully the democratic candidate for president will synthesize the best of all of these idea generators. (These candidates are all pretty strong - time to narrow the field? Glad too we have so many candidates of color! Congratulations, America!:).
Now who will win the Democratic nomination? Probably none of the above ...
I also hope any Dem president might develop a single cryptocurrency with block chain for all 7.5 billion people, and explore doing this with Universal Basic Income experiments in all ~200 countries -
Adrift by-the-wind sailor (Velella): Full house for Hamilton (musical) on a Wednesday afternoon Orpheum SF ... Color conscious cast * * * Could E.W. come to office in 2020 running policy-wise on a single cryptocurrency backed by some number of ~200 countries' central banks - and even Universal Basic Income experiments (on a BANK Card - as 'product,' - e.g. the 'debit cards' mentioned here "Will ‘basic income’ become the California norm? Stockton starts $500 no-strings payments" ... https://www.sacbee.com/news/local/article226280230.html - or for those who have them, on smart phones) - in the same way Alexander Hamilton started the U.S. banking system in the US, . And re Castells - https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/04/adrift-by-wind-sailor-velella-full.html.
I found this evening's debate slightly more engaged than last evening's.
Could be emailing this to Alden, Sandy, David T, John K, Pin M, and more friends, but may just blog it instead, and thus engage in a unique kind of "communication power" per Castells. :)
(And I'll be content in my own world with developing, as president, professor and founder, wiki MIT OCW-centric World University and School in ~200 countries and 7111 known living languages - potentially creating 2.2. million jobs (in the US and in all ~200 countries' languages, and re diversity as well) - and also my actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic project, bagpiping, and beginning a family).
What do you think now after the debates, M? Who do you think would be your current 'picks' as well?
L, Scott

M,
And what did you think of the debates? Just noticed that Google Education's Brendan Chan is moving to Indiana to volunteer for the Buttigieg campaign - https://twitter.com/EduBrendan/status/1156928478844817410 - leading me to wonder about a new facet of these Presidential candidates' debates, i.e. how Google's IT, or social media, could be focused to help specific candidates. Brendan was a World Univ & Sch contact at Google (where WUaS is in Google Education), and probably knows its infrastructure well. On his Twitter feed, he also seems to focusing this morning on Buttigieg image-making. Wondering if some Google folks are also volunteering for Elizabeth Warren's campaign. Would still lean toward a Warren - Buttigieg ticket, but think Biden is more masterful and potentially a better viable candidate to win in 2020 ... You?
I also think that Warren as first woman president in the US would be great, and would be a further expression of the American dream. Methinks Elizabeth Warren would benefit from a further image-making focus; I think Biden is doing well in this sphere.
Blogged a bit about this - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/07/collared-kingfisher-dem-debates.html

Collared kingfisher: Democratic Debates ! & 2
Hi M,
How was your day? And how was the debate ?
Methinks I'm leaning toward in this order -
Elizabeth Warren - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_Warren Joe Biden - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_BidenKamala Harris - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kamala_Harris Andrew Yang - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Yang
Cory Booker - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cory_Booker
Could be emailing this to Alden, Sandy, David T, John K, and more friends, but may just blog it instead, and thus engage in a unique kind of "communication power" per Castells. :)
And I'll be content in my own world with developing wiki MIT OCW-centric World University and School in ~200 countries and 7111 known living languages - potentially creating 2.2. million jobs (in the US and in all ~200 countries' languages, and re diversity as well) - and also my actual-virtual Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic project, bagpiping, and beginning a family.
What do you think now after the debates, M? Who do you think would be your current 'picks' as well?
L, Scott
Here are the two Democratic Debates' links from CNN which should have recordings of them soon -

Hi Mark,
Think I'm getting back into Ancestry.com after a Cuttyhunk hiatus.
Looks like I'm paying $19.99/month to A.com, I saw recently, so it's probably worth my getting the AncestryDNA information into Ancestry.com itself, learning a bit about this new approach to family history, downloading a GEDCOM file, and then taking a vacation for awhile, possibly while developing new approaches in WikiTree - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/MacLeod-2524. (See this World Univ & Sch recent post - https://twitter.com/WorldUnivAndSch/status/1156549832749850628 - re WUaS's poverty too; WUaS hasn't yet become financially operational to speak of after some 9 years when we became a 501 c 3, and WUaS became a parallel for-profit general stock company legal entity in 2017). Have you checked out you in WikiTree - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/MacLeod... (and here's your Dad - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/MacLeod-2532 - too, Professor Bruce Vincent MacLeod, both of which I added) by any chance? I think both sites will offer different methodologies re genealogical approaches, and both have a DNA focus as well.
Will check out some of the birth date questions you touch on here -
Monday, July 22, 2019Scott,
It would be great if there was an automatic way to sort out conflicts like birth dates. Surprisingly, I've come across hundreds of instances of mismatched dates. I try to rely on something official like a birth certificate, and hopefully find the same date in more than one document. But at the end of the day I've simply decided not to worry about a birthdate or other event being a day or two off (was one date a birth and the other a baptism?). I've even come across grave stones where the inscribed birth year is wrong (e.g. George S. MacLeod, buried in Portland).
One unresolved mystery is the birth year of Ernest James MacLeod. His birth certificate is clear - he was born Aug 10, 1876. But Ernest often listed his birth date as Aug 8, 1877 including on his draft card and naturalization documents. Odd.
I think I accessed your father's record to add the 'II' to his name and to check whether I found reference to his burial in Find-a-Grave (I did).
Mark
... as I get back into Ancestry.com. Haven't yet updated - http://scottmacleod.com/ScottMacLeodFamilyHistory.htm - but hope to soon, now that I'm back in Canyon 94516.
Have you already seen Sandy, Gerry and Mary Lou at the lake in Buxton? How were / are they? It could be interesting to explore EASILY and SIMPLY adding an online video aspect to the MacLeod family reunion at Bonny Eagle on 8/1/20 you've mentioned. This would allow family, particularly yours, from around the world/country, who might be interested to join, hypothetically. Would be particularly great if someone from Bruce MacLeod's offspring expressed interest in this. (Just brainstorming about this further:)
Thanks for the Ancestry.com seed / meme (replicating cultural unit:) a word newly coined by Richard Dawkins in 1976 (see too - https://twitter.com/RichardDawkins), who takes a very different approach to genetics and history, re his far-reaching evolutionary biological focus.
Have you seen Twitter feeds, or blogs (e.g. http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Gordon%20K.%20MacLeod%20MD) added to Ancestry.com - re family history documentation evidence?
Nice to be in touch about all of this :)
MacLeod cheers, Scott

Hi Pin (Sid), Maitreyi and All,
Just back in Canyon, California 94516, after leaving Cuttyhunk island, MA 02713, yesterday. And I just added this last email I sent ...

India actually has 36 states/territories I just learned, according to Wikipedia - "India is a federal union comprising 29 states and 7 union territories, for a total of 36 entities" - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/States_and_union_territories_of_India ...
Blogged a little about all this here - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/07/north-sentinel-island-india-with-regard.html?m=0 ...
Marti and Pin, it seems like West Bengal, Bangladesh and India could be a great field site for a single cryptocurrency backed by one central bank ...

... to this related blog post from Thursday July 25, 2019 ... http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/07/north-sentinel-island-india-with-regard.html ... as well as the 'field site' label.
Am curious how Neha Narula and the MIT DCI are thinking about and planning for testing and trying a single, potentially worldwide, digital currency with blockchain, backed by 1 or a few central banks, perhaps with Universal Basic Income experiments, in the 'field' - e.g. with paper money and coins, on smart phones and on bank cards. How would this play out in Bangladesh, Marti where you work medically (with Harvard Medicine), and where UBI experiments could be very very welcome, helpful and much needed, I wonder?
Warm regards, Scott

Hi Pin, and All,
Brainstorming-wise, I think re a single cryptocurrency backed by some number of ~200 countries' central banks, and distributed potentially via Universal Basic Income experiments (think the Stockton, CA, Basic Income experiment - significantly with the state of California), that the idea of a realistic virtual earth (Harbin too) with 7.5 billion avatar bots representing all living people (for medicine, tele-robotic surgery and electronic health records too, Marti), where an estimated 4 billion people don't have physical addresses (re UBI experiments, for ex.), would be as a kind of avatar bot addressing system, and for planning purposes.
Have blogged further about this here today as well - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/07/nicobar-pigeon-am-curious-how-neha.html.

Dear M,
Hi from Boston's Logan Airport ... smooth trip from Cuttyhunk to Padanarum, and nice to travel over the water with Seth, Russell, Dianna, her husband, and baby Oliver, and then the taxi ride to Airport also went well with interesting conversation too. Arriving early to the Airport, the 5:06 pm flight to Oakland has been delayed a little bit twice, but will soon board for return to California.
So nice to see you and to visit in recent days.
Am exploring whether the main Penikese house could be considered the last hippy house in the Cuttyhunk-Penikese 'axis' here - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2019/07/common-yellowthroat-upcoming-book-to.html (with now 124 blog posts in the "Cuttyhunk" label - http://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/search/label/Cuttyhunk - some about a kind of Cuttyhunk 'vision':). Are you both docenting at the Historical Society this summer, Ma & Peg?
Looks like another Wikidata Affinity Group about online libraries and World Univ & Sch's Library Resources - https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/Library_Resources (planned in ~200 countries' official / main languages) - is meeting in Zoom video conference, with Stanford Librarian Hilary Thorsen chairing it, is meeting tomorrow morning 9am Pacific Time. Glad to be in this ongoing conversation.

Dear Byron and Cindy, and All,
Am having a Garden Party on Saturday afternoon August 10th around 5 pm on my porch in Canyon in honor of summer - it may be a baby shower too. Potluck. We’ll have tea and veggies - hopefully from my garden in a box! Please come and partake in some yummies. (And, everyone, put your musical instruments in the car .... have invited too some SCD musicians ... who may bring pink and blue Scottish Country Dance sheet music books ... perhaps some of us can explore playing some of these tunes slowly and creatively and in an improvisational way even! Dancing allowed... if we find our way to music-making!)
Greetings from Cuttyhunk island, MA! :) And thanks for your RSVPs thus far!
Take care,
Scott

Dear Scott,
Ellen and I will be hosting a Curriculum Study Commission meeting on that day. We’ll be devoting the bulk of the meeting to addressing final details for the 10/4/19-10/6/19 English Language Arts Conference on the Asilomar Conference Grounds—our 68th consecutive meeting in this venue.
We may still have enough umph at the end of the day to drive north to Canyon, but I can’t say for sure.
If you can tolerate a degree of uncertainty about our attendance, that’s the way I’d like to leave things at this point.
Thanks for your understanding.
My very best,
Jonathan

Thanks for the invite Scott. Still working on my back. Researching neurosurgeons as two cortisone epidurals have not worked. This all takes time - if I do go ahead with it, it will be microsurgery that’s said to be highly successful - still checking out details. Sorry I neglected to reply to your kind offer of yoga book loan. It’s been a hectic time for me. Probably not ready for music and dance party on 8/10 yet though it sounds like fun. My b/day is 8/8 so would have been perfect with some cake! Enjoy!

Happy upcoming birthday, Barbara!
May I bring a little cake or some cupcakes or similar by on your birthday for a celebration at your place?
Hmmm .... other approaches to back challenges with successful outcomes? By way of comparison, my right ear eustachian tube dysfunction seems to be changing and developing but is still manageable. Yoga sitting and releasing and forward bending in half lotus mornings daily has some benefits, as do shoulderstands some afternoons. Headstands possibly ... all as movement therapies, with benefits of exercise to the bodymind as a whole as well. Angela's email response (after I was in her course in Berkeley in 2017) to my ETD dysfunction is below, which might be edifying re your ongoing back condition too.
Happy upcoming birthday! A wee celebration with sweet cake chez toi? :)

Hi Scottie in the fab.kilt!
it was so fine to see you in Namaste this weekend and you added some colour and fun to the class!
I just got you email this morning. I was hacked some years ago and lost everything so have a new address but am not much into social emails so best to just connect with Victor as you have been doing!
Re my EUSTACHIAN TUBE DYSFUNCTION question ...
I suffer also from ringing In the ears....sometimes it is almost deafening but anything to relax tension around the shoulders and neck eases it a bit.
For me it is never the Asana but how I can release and undo tension from inside...
Computer work inevitably tightens us up in these areas.
I use my fingers and thumbs when lying down to get into the really tight 'ropes' on either side of my neck....great to do it in bet as then I fall way to sleep beautifully!
Staying away whenever possible from loud and mechanical noises, listening to water...ocean waves, rivers, rain, wind in the trees , birdsong...all soothing to the ears.
I guess we have to live with these problems but softening and becoming more receptive is the best help.
Finding a mate is not up to us. When we are truly ready to be open and loving with ourselves and NO Expectations for others.....just to honour and accept them as they are...there is a chance that something wonderful appears
Expectations will ruin any relationship. gratitude and love is the best medicine
Lots of love
Angela!

Thanks Scott for the good wishes and your thoughts re healing. I read Angela’s message to you also. All good ideas and suggestions. I’ve been working a long while on alternative healing ways for my back. I promised I would research the surgery option as it comes highly recommended for my situation (piece of broken off disc sitting on the root nerve at L5) so am doing that now. It would be microsurgery to merely remove the the piece of disc - no complicated fusion or other spine changes. Of course, if there’s a non-surgery way, I would prefer it!
I’m currently on a gluten-free diet (in addition to my meat, fish and egg-free regular diet). Am also trying to avoid refined sugar as that also increases inflammation. So probably cake would not work right now, but that was a kind offer! I have a new acupuncturist who recommended the gluten-free approach to reducing inflammation (esp in my back!). Have been doing it a couple of months now. I am healing but it’s not for sure the microdisc piece will resorb. Hence the surgery option. I really want to get back to laying the fiddle!
I hope you are enjoying your time in MA.
CA greetings!Barbara

Hi Barbara,
Thanks for your nice email, and best wishes in your healing process. (Am an appreciator of knowledge-based allopathic medical approaches when they can knowledgeably help ...eg Stanford Harvard MDs idea for 3rd and 4th 2nd opinions - and eg my friend David T went ro Mass Eye and Ear with his ear balance condition Meniere's disease and had a successful!operation and MA paid for it, ... but when not viable, and when one's in pain ... one searches for solutions ... and I attempt to keep my noninterventionist allopathic medicine skepticism active for self preservation, and to avoid errors to my body ... so all the best in your ongoing search for a therapy that works (would a MD for smarts, knowledge training skill etc do the microsurgery hypothetically? ) ... my own Yoga training and A/V conversation are helpful re my own healing (and am not actively teaching Yoga too these days) and re asana movement therapies (re Dona's Yoga books) ... so best wishes with your search
Savory gluten-free birthday cakelets? LET's explore this possibility after I return to Bay on 7/30. :) Happy upcoming birthday !
