Ukraine Claims It Shot Down A Russian IL-76 Transport Plane (Updated)

While the hostilities continue, Ukrainian officials say they are trying to start negotiations with Russia to end the conflict.

Ukrainian forces claim to have shot down a Russian Il-76 Candid airlifter flying near the country’s capital Kyiv tonight, although there is no independent confirmation of this so far. Il-76s are generally used for heavy transport and paratrooper operations, though there are derivatives of the design that also serve as aerial refueling tankers and early warning aircraft. This comes as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is now entering its third day. You can find more information about how Russia’s war on Ukraine has progressed so far in earlier rolling coverage of the conflict here.

At the same time, while details are still limited, Sergii Nykyforov, the top spokesperson for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, has said that the groundwork is being laid for negotiations to bring an end to Russia’s invasion. This follows a number of reports today that suggest, despite advancing deeper into Ukraine, Russian forces have been unable to make the military gains they had hoped to have achieved by now. “Ukraine was and remains ready to talk about ceasefire and peace. This is our constant position. We responded in agreement to the proposal of the President of the Russian Federation,” according to a machine translation of Nykyforov’s Facebook post. “Directly at these hours, the parties are consulting about the place and time of the negotiation process. The sooner the negotiations begin, the more chance there will be to restore normal life.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously called for negotiatio …

Putin Has a Problem: The Russian Military Is Struggling in Ukraine

On the third day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, fighting across the country rages on as Russian forces are struggling to meet their objectives.
Fighting in Kyiv
The bulk of the Russian forces invading from the north is approximately 20 miles from the center of the Ukrainian capital. But their advance has been stalled by the fierce Ukrainian resistance.
“[The invasion line] towards Kyiv, we assess is going slower than the Russians had anticipated it going. They’re meeting more resistance than they expected, but I don’t—I can’t give you an exact geographic location of where they are, but they are not moving on Kyiv as fast as what we believe they anticipated they would be able to do. That said, they continue to try to move on Kyiv,” a senior U.S. defense official said on Friday.
Moscow stated that Russian forces have resumed their advance after alleged negotiation efforts with the Ukrainian government failed. But according to Pentagon, Russian forces didn’t seem to halt their advances …

As the people of Ukraine continue to come under assault by invading Russian forces, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio tweeted that “something is off with” Russian President Vladimir Putin.“I wish I could share more, but for now I can say it’s pretty obvious to many that something is off with #Putin,” Rubio wrote. “He has always been a killer, but his problem now is different & significant,” the lawmaker continued. “It would be a mistake to assume this Putin would react the same way he would have 5 years ago.”

Ukraine DESTROYS Russian convoy

Ukrainians are putting up a fierce resistance against Vladimir Putin’s invading army as dramatic video shows a destroyed Russian convoy with Z‑markings near Kherson in the south of the country on the third day of the Kremlin’s illegal war.

Kyiv’s defence ministry put Russia’s losses at 2,800 troops, 80 tanks, 516 armoured vehicles, 10 airplanes and seven helicopters.

Russian officials have made similar claims – that Moscow has captured more than 160 troops; destroyed 74 Ukrainian military ground facilities; downed five fighter jets and one helicopter; and destroyed 18 tanks and other armoured vehicles.

Volodmyr Zelensky claimed that Ukraine’s army was in control of the capital and had successfully repelled Moscow’s attacks after a brutal night of fighting which saw two Russian military transport planes, a fighter jet and helicopter downed.

Putin’s troops have continued their march on Ukraine’s capital, with Britain’s defence ministry saying the bulk of those involved in the advance were now 19 miles from the city centre.

Russia’s Interfax news agency claimed Moscow had captured the southeastern city of Melitopol. Ukrainian officials were not immediately available to comment on the fate of Melitopol. If the Interfax report about Melitopol, which cited Russia’s defence ministry, is confirmed, it would be the first significant population centre that the Kremlin has seized.

Britain’s armed forces minister James Heappey cast doubt on the report, saying the city of some 150,000 people was still in Ukrainian hands and that fighting in the capital was so far confined to ‘very isolated pockets of Russian special forces and paratroopers’ and that ‘the main armoured columns approaching Kyiv are still some way off’.

The Ukrainian health minister said 198 people have been killed and more than 1,000 wounded in the Russian offensive. Viktor Lyashko said there were three children among those killed. His statement was unclear whether the casualties included military and civilians.

He said another 1,115 people, including 33 children, were wounded in the Russian invasion. Russian authorities released no casualty figures.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitchsko said a missile hit a high-rise building on the city’s southwestern outskirts. He posted an image showing a gaping hold in one side of the building that ravaged apartments on several floors. Firefighters said at least six civilians were injured, and 80 were evacuated.

Ukraine’s military is far inferior to its Russian counterpart with an air defence system and air force dating back to the Soviet era. Few expect Kyiv to emerge victorious from what is almost certain to be a prolonged, bloody and vicious war…

Putin humiliated as 3,500 troops killed, 200 captured…

Further sources boast the situation is ‘100 percent under control’ as Russian forces advance on the capital, Kyiv. With the invasion of Ukraine entering its third day, Russian military assets appear to have struck multiple targets and cities around Ukraine, leading to Ukrainian civilians taking up arms in order to defend their country.

Taking to Twitter to reassure citizens, a Ukrainian TV channel wrote: “Adviser to the Head of the Presidential Office Podoliak: “The situation in Kyiv and Ukraine is 100% under control.

“Local fighting continues; the Ukrainian army is defending itself”

Speaking of the toll on Russian soldiers, a Ukrainian Journalist Tweeted: “As of this morning, we have almost 200 captured Russian servicemen.

“About 3.5 thousand people will return to Russia in their graves.”

Rand Paul Forces Vote to End Dumbest Remaining Federal COVID Mandate

Senator Rand Paul just announced that he will force a Senate vote on repealing one of the federal government’s most idiotic remaining COVID-19 mandates. The Kentucky Republican has gathered enough signatures from his colleagues to trigger a vote when the Senate returns to session on ending the federal government’s travel mask mandates that currently require passengers to wear masks on airplanes and other forms of public transportation.
“Since March 2020, unelected bureaucrats have incessantly declared that we should ‘follow the science,’” Paul said in a statement. “But the same bureaucrats continue to defy science by imposing an ineffective and restrictive mask mandate for individuals travelling on public transit and airplanes.”
“As the entire world is learning to live with COVID, the federal government still uses fear mongering to stubbornly perpetuate it …

Biden admin says it will keep working with Putin in ‘important areas,’ likely climate change

President Joe Biden’s State Department said on Friday that the administration will continue to work with Russia when it comes to areas that are of “overriding importance.” While the department did not say exactly what those areas include, the spokesman’s comments come days after U.S. Special Climate Envoy John Kerry said he hopes “President Putin will help us to stay on track with respect to what we need to do for the climate.” During a Friday press conference, State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters that while the U.S.’s relationship with Moscow is “very different” following Russia’s attack on Ukraine, the Biden administration will continue to “engage” with Putin in certain areas. “Russia’s actions, it’s needless, unprovoked, unnecessary, brutal campaign against Ukraine has fundamentally changed the relationship that Moscow has not only with the United States but with countries around the world. The flavor, the look, the feel of our relationship with Moscow is very different …

Los Angeles is Spending Up To $837,000 for One Housing Unit for the Homeless

In 2016, voters in California approved a $1.2 billion program to build housing for the homeless. This is a fine idea, and Californians should be applauded for their compassion and generosity. But six years later, only 1,200 units have been built out of the 10,300 that have been paid for. One project under development would cost $837,000 for each housing unit, according to a report published by Los Angeles city controller Ron Galperin.
Another 14% of units exceeded $700,000 in cost.
The program “is still unable to meet the demands of the homelessness crisis,” Galperin said in a letter accompanying the 31-page report. The pace of development is slow, while the cost of each unit continues to climb — in some cases to “staggering heights.”
But Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti thinks the program is working just fine.

Let’s be clear: Prop. HHH is producing more units than promised, at a lower cost than …
