Mōtsū-ji temple

A part of one of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hiraizumi, here we see the tall stone in the pond garden of Mōtsū-ji temple, which was slanted by the 2011 earthquake and then re-erected. This is outstanding but there are more modern stone settings on the shore and in the pond. The pond garden represents the Buddhist paradise.

Ffridd Fedw

Lesser known cairns and settlements to visit further up the Moel Goedog trail - see the nearby sites on our page for more. Ffridd Fedw round hut, enclosure, ancient fields and kerb cairn, making up an ancient settlement in Gwynedd. Royal Commission aerial reconnaissance in December 2012 showed extensive survival of early cultivation ridges to the east and north-east of the settlement, well beyond the bounds of the scheduled area. Such remains are extremely fragile in the face of potential upland pasture improvement and modern ploughing. The aerial photos are linked from our page.

Oddendale stone alignment

Possible stone alignment in association with Oddendale stone circle. The alignment consists of two pairs of large boulders of Shap Pink Granite placed less than 200 metres apart. When viewed from the north the alignment becomes visible and does not therefore appear to be a chance occurrence. Pictured: The northern pair of boulders, and behind the southern pair of boulders can be seen between the boulders to the southeast.

Neonteikhos

An ancient Greek settlement in the modern country of Turkey that dates from at least the 6th century BCE. An historic road to the ancient city of Neonteikhos in the Aegean province of İzmir, which intersects with a motorway, was removed during the construction of an overpass bridge that was built for its protection, and now the removed stones have been reassembled, like putting a jigsaw puzzle back together.

Cnoc An Daimh

This chambered cairn in Sutherland can be glimpsed from the roadside when approaching from the north on the A894. There is roadside parking on the verge and a newly well made wheelchair accessible path will get you close to the cairn. It stands on a rocky outcrop with impressive mountain views. Near the centre of the cairn the tops of four stones project above loose boulders and seem to outline the location of the chamber.

Only the southernmost section of the settlement is visible above ground nowadays, but more ruins remain hidden beneath the surface that remains unexcavated. The archaeological works began in 2015 and have focused on the most monumental remains, the south talaiot and the perimeter wall.

Serra de Estrela

Cup marks on several stones, some on the edge of a sheer drop! Just along the N.339 road. (Torre, the summit of Serra da Estrala where everybody converges, is about 1 km further when coming from Covilha.) Serra da Estrela as a whole is a major tourist attraction in North Portugal.
