Next Talks: Thurs 6th Feb, 13th Feb, Surrey, 14th Mar nr Jodrell Bank, Cheshire
Andy B's next 'Old Stones' Talks are as follows: This Thursday 6th February - Ashford, Surrey, which is off the western M25 J13; 13th Feb - Kingston-upon-Thames - actually Surbiton - South-West London, which is just 20 mins from Waterloo by train. Then on the 14th March Andy is heading up to give the Friends of The Blackden Trust annual lecture, near Jodrell Bank, Cheshire. This last one is Andy's only trip north for the next few months so get it in your diary if you can get there. More details of all these talks on our page.

Yellowmead
Four Concentric Stone Circles in Devon. This site was restored in 1921 and consists of four concentric stone circles, one of which surrounded a cairn, now badly ruined. A stone row runs to the south-west.

Cahokia
Cahokia Depopulation - Repopulation Investigated . See the comments on our page for this story and links to academic papers and YouTube video.. Ancient City in Madison and St. Clair Counties, Illinois. A few miles west of Collinsville are the remains of a Mississippian city now called Cahokia. The site was inhabited between 700-1400AD, with its peak being around 1050-1200AD. The city is famous for its 120 plus mounds constructed and enlarged on several occasions during the citys habitation.

Stiogha Chnap Propped Stone SC1
This short paper describes a number of propped stones recently recorded near Bostadh on Great Bernera, in the Outer Hebrides, and relates them to very similar features in diverse parts of England, Wales and Ireland. This report is essentially a segment of ongoing fieldwork and the intention is to promote greater awareness and discussion of these ambiguous and widespread megalithic structures. The feature to which the writer had originally been directed by John Billingsley. A wedge-shaped slab tapering 50cm to 5cm, 200cm x 330cm. A very imposing lunullar shape with two props, the smaller being a mass of mineral including a large amount of rose quartz very similar in hue to the props at CG2 and 4. Dots Stone, on West Penwith, Cornwall, (SW42692 36165) is a substantial block elevated by a similar cobble consisting essentially of a mass of mineral with no similar stones being evident within a 200m radius.

Son Mercer de Dalt
A pre-Talayotic Bronze Age rock-cut tomb is located some 1.3km South of Ferreries, Menorca. The burial chamber is elongated in shape, it includes two wide benches running along the walls and a narrow channel between them, similar to the pre-Talayotic tombs from Cala de Sant Vincens necropolis in Mallorca.

Nean Howe
Located on Elm Ledge just below Danby Beacon in North Yorkshire, this round barrow is in a prominent position with extensive all round moorland views, as well as the North Sea being visible in the far distance. It has the remains of a concrete platform to which a metal mounting plate is bolted, thought to have been for a WW2 anti-aircraft gun or searchlight.

Ema Family House Garden
Local legend said that the 5 big stones in the paddy field of Tono village in Honshū were some of the garden stones of a samurai house. To prove the mystery of the legend, the excavation started in 1976. As a result, a ruin of Ema clans mansion (15th-16c) with a dry landscape garden was discovered.

Grand Menhir de Counozouls
The Grand Menhir de Counozouls, in the Aude Valley to the south of Quillan, is 8.9 metres tall, and weighs 50 tons. It is the biggest in southern France, and one of the largest in Europe. A few years ago it was almost lost in the forest, but thankfully the trees around it have now been cleared, and the stone stands proudly in the open, with a lovely view of the village across the valley, in this extremely spectacular Pyrenean scenery.
