Praise Report

The Ironic Catholic writes:
I don't know if you remember linking to this plea and story last October, but I thought that you'd like to know the end of the story--and it's great! I think the link made a difference. Thank you!

BTW best email handle ever.
Cool beans!

Re: the handle. I can't take credit. My Dad always dreamed of christening a boat the Chez Ami. I walk unworthily in his giant shoes.

Fascinating Piece on Guys vs. Men

I think she's really on to something. The phenomenon of boys who linger on as "guys" rather than becoming men is endemic in our culture. It's also very very unhealthy.

Note to guys: Women like men.

Note to men: Guys need mentors and fathers, cuz they often have no idea how to become men.

Joe Carter at First Things writes...

Since you've been writing about the Creed lately I thought you might be interested in this project.
Looks good to me! Keep up the good work!

The Rosary?

There's an app for that.

Though I gotta say, do we *really* need tech when beads will do the job?

One Man who Said No to the Faustian Bargain of Torture

Unlike the damp-handed draft dodgers like Dick Cheney who order torture, Matthew Alexander actually served his country in the military and was tasked with the interrogation of prisoners. He did not, however, wet himself and authorize war crimes while conflating brutality with courage as cowards do. Instead, he rejects harsh interrogation techniques. Here's an interview with him. Near the end of the interview the interviewer asks him about efficacy and the army interrogator points out that even if there are (very) rare occasions where torture "works", there are lots of things we are capable of doing that are 100% effective that we nevertheless refuse to do because they're immoral. Here's a link.

The Country that Used to be England

struggles with the problem of senility. Not the senility of its oldest citizens. The senility of its post-Christian culture.

A Christian culture, faced with the problem of weak and defenseless citizens (say, for instance, the elderly), figures out ways to care for them. When the institutions charged with doing so break down, a Christian culture, infused with the Holy Spirit, raises up reformers who lead the charge to fix the problem.

A post-Christian culture looks at the problem of caring for the old, weak, and sick, then turns to an writer who made millions preaching the good new of death for the weak. He ponders things carefully, and says "Kill the old, weak, and sick. Ignore that stuff about love. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to return to my piles of money."
