Canon Filmmakers Live with Philip Bloom
I'll be in Miami the next couple days enjoying a full-day workshop with Philip Bloom, basically the co-godfather of DSLR video (Vincent Laforet is the other), and basically an animal when it comes to producing some pretty fantastic stuff with a DSLR. It'll be a nice change of pace to sit while someone else presents and talk shop about video rather than web.
Other U.S. workshops are still available in Dallas, Austin, Albuquerque, Denver, Seattle, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Tickets are just $150 for the day.

Teehan+Lax 6px Baseline Grid
I have to admit, I'm not much of a baseline grid user myself. But Jesse Bennett-Chamberlain pointed me to this yesterday, I threw it in a PSD I'm working on, and things were fairly close to baseline — font alignment, visual elements, navigation lists, etc. I think that's due to the 6px spacing of the baseline and the flexibility such a small increment provides.
I'm convinced to give this a try in my next design. Download the grid here.
Apple's Role in the Earthquake
An email from an Apple Japan employee and friend of Kevin Rose:
7 hours and 118 aftershocks later, the store was still open. Why? Because with the phone and train lines down, taxis stopped, and millions of people stuck in the Tokyo shopping district scared, with no access to television, hundreds of people were swarming into Apple stores to watch the news on USTREAM and contact their families via Twitter, Facebook, and email….
You know how in disaster movies, people on the street gather around electronic shops that have TVs in the display windows so they can stay informed with what is going on? In this digital age, that's what the Tokyo Apple stores became.

The Big Picture: Japan's Vast Devastation
Heartbreaking. Please consider ways to donate, even by purchasing a poster by James White or a Salvation Army t-shirt by Joshua Smith.

Day One
Knight Sans
An affordable webfont that I could see myself using in an upcoming project.
Hiring: Top-Shelf Designer at Envy Labs
Envy Labs, a Ruby on Rails shop, is seeking a skilled UI designer for their Orlando offices (just a couple hours from my home). They're a small shop that has grown from one to 16 employees over the past two years. You'll find photos and even a walk-through video of their offices in the listing.
Related, download a copy of their Rails 3 Cheat Sheet (PDF).

Salman Khan: Let's Use Video to Reinvent Education
Speaking of homeschooling in yesterday's post, here's a TED video worth watching. An alternate title for this talk might have been, "Let's Just Reinvent the Entire Educational System."
This is the first I've seen of Salman Khan, and clearly he's not just a talented educator but a fantastic speaker, too. (Stick around for the standing ovation at the end and then Q&A with Bill Gates.)
Learn more and watch the educational videos at Khan Academy.
