What Are Temporomandibular Joint Disorders?

by Tammy Jones

tmj

TMJ problems lead to severe pain, swelling, and even locking of the jaw. The usual treatment for TMJ involves using anesthetics or painkillers. These treatments can have their downsides as well. In some extreme cases, the pain caused by TMJ disorder can only be relieved with invasive surgery.

In most instances, the most effective treatments for TMJ disorders affect the underlying cause of TMJ problems. To relieve the pain of TMJ you may: relax your face. Use cold compresses to reduce inflammation around the jaw joint. Reduce jaw movement. Avoid hard foods (such as beef jerky) and chewing tobacco.

People with severe TMJ disorder may need to resort to more drastic means to remove the TMJ pain. In these cases, patients will need to see a physician who specializes in treating TMJ problems. Some patients may need to wear a mouth guard while they sleep to control jaw movement. And in extreme cases where the underlying cause of TMJ disorder is muscle tension, muscle exercises may need to be done in addition to the other treatments discussed above. The exercises are meant to retrain the muscles around the jaw joint to prevent TMJ symptoms from recurring.

The primary goal of the jaw exercises mentioned above is to reduce the tension that causes the TMJ symptoms. The secondary goal is to improve the posture and bite of the patient. This will reduce the occurrence of facial pain due to TMJ. This can also help you avoid long-term complications such as headaches and insomnia.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Many people experience grinding of their teeth. This happens when the soft tissue on the inside of the teeth, which includes the dentin, becomes inflamed or irritated. The grinding occurs when the person tries to relieve the pressure by biting on the back of their upper teeth. Although many people grind their teeth to relieve stress and anxiety, this disorder can also have serious underlying health complications.

If the condition of your jaw bone (the base of your skull) is causing the TMJ, your doctor may prescribe the use of a mouth guard. These guards are designed to hold your lower jaw in a fixed position. They may also help reduce stress caused by TMJ. These guards can either be custom made or found at your local drug store. Most people find that they are comfortable wearing them.

Some TMJ disorders are accompanied by inflammation of the joint. In these cases, pain and swelling can result. A doctor can prescribe a steroid pain reliever to relieve the symptoms. These steroidal pain relievers can help reduce pain and improve muscle relaxation. They are not, however, a cure for TMJ itself.

Arthritis, another TMJ disorder, can cause symptoms such as locking of the jaw. If the cause of your TMJ disorder is arthritis, your doctor may recommend treatment for the arthritis along with the use of a bite guard. It has been found that many cases of TMJ are caused by muscle problems rather than biting stress. Many of the exercises necessary for arthritis prevention actually increase muscle tension, making TMJ symptoms worse. It is important to seek proper medical advice if you think you may have arthritis as an underlying cause of TMJ.

Other cases of TMJ disorder are due to clenching and grinding of the teeth. Clenching and grinding of the teeth can lead to cracks in the teeth, sinus infections, and even mouth cancer. For this reason, it is very important that you report all cases of TMJ to your dentist. You should have your bite examined by your dentist to rule out any underlying disease that might be causing your TMJ. If a sinus infection or a cold has caused your TMJ, the dentist will most likely recommend treatments for these conditions.

There are many ways to treat TMJ. Your dentist can provide you with various treatments depending on what the cause of your TMJ disorder is. In some cases, the dentist may recommend simple anti-inflammatory medications, such as aspirin or ibuprofen. These over the counter pain relievers can help with the discomfort of clocking and grinding teeth but won’t help with any pain or swelling you experience as a result of your TMJ disorder.

In more severe cases of TMJ, your dentist may recommend surgical procedures to eliminate your TMJ problem. The dentist may perform arthroscopy to remove impacted or damaged cartilage between the base of your skull and your joint(s). The dentist may perform specific surgeries, such as osteotomy where they disconnect the muscles in your face and replace them with metal screws. In more extreme cases, the dentist may perform surgery to fully open up your jaws and replace the muscles with titanium screws. While these procedures are not typically performed on patients with TMJ, they are highly effective and long-lasting treatments for your TMJ problem.

What is Bronchitis? – The Symptoms and Treatment

by Cascia Talbert

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Bronchitis is a general term that is used to describe a range of illnesses that cause inflammation in the air passages. The lung inflammation is caused by virus infections. These viruses are often very specific to the individual.

bronchitis

There are many different types of bronchitis and many symptoms associated with it. The most common form of bronchitis is a chronic bronchitis. This is characterized by very severe cough, swelling in the throat, yellow-green mucus from the nose, wheezing and a constant feeling of exhaustion.

However, there are many short-term bronchitis that are easily cured. The short-term type is often treated as a cold. This is often something that is self-treated and can be avoided.

The common causes of chronic bronchitis are smoke inhalation and poor hygiene. Smoking is very bad for anyone to do and the fact that there are so many people smoking around the world today makes this all the more true. Chronic bronchitis can also be caused by antibiotic and steroid use in some cases.

Bronchitis has been known to cause fever and night sweats. Therefore, the treatment that is recommended is to lower the fever and get rid of the excess sweat. If the fever does not improve then some sort of treatment would have to be taken.

One of the most common things that people who suffer from bronchitis do is cough. This is another symptom that is commonly associated with bronchitis. The coughing normally starts in the morning after waking up or the night before sleeping. Most of the time it has something to do with the nasal passages being blocked and something about the sinuses, which are located on the sides of the nose or the back of the mouth. Mucus that is thick and yellow is usually produced. The mucus can be very difficult to remove. Once the mucus gets into the airways, it may be difficult to remove.

The symptoms of bronchitis are very different from those of other diseases. It is important to note that the common cold is actually a symptom of bronchitis. The common cold can cause the same symptoms of bronchitis, but it is much easier to treat. Sometimes the symptoms of bronchitis are confused with the common cold.

Although the symptoms of bronchitis are very similar to the common cold, the difference between the two is the severity of the symptoms. The common cold causes a runny nose, the red eyes and generally a cough. The symptoms of bronchitis include long, heavy coughing spells, thickening of the mucus and a general feeling of tiredness.

The main symptom of bronchitis is the loss of energy that is experienced by the person. This is because the person’s respiratory system cannot process and produce enough mucus to keep the lungs functioning properly. This is a huge problem because the lungs have to work harder in order to process the mucus.

The coughing that is common with bronchitis is the production of mucus. Because of this, the discharge that comes out of the body is white in color. This white mucus can cause considerable discomfort to the person that is suffering from bronchitis.

In order to prevent the onset of bronchitis, the person should have a warm atmosphere in their home. In addition, they should be kept as comfortable as possible. As previously mentioned, a cold can be a very effective way to relieve the symptoms of bronchitis. The most important thing that someone should know about bronchitis is that the common cold can be treated and cured with simple home remedies and will not cause any lasting damage to the lungs.

Recognizing Child Abuse

by Andrea Crawley

Child abuse is not just limited to physical violence aimed at a child under the age of 12. It is also any sort of psychological abuse by an adult, which usually is physically or psychologically abusive for the child. This includes emotional abuse. When child abuse takes place at home and often the perpetrator is, such as a parent or other care-giving adult, this is clearly a form of domestic abuse.

child abuse

Physical child abuse can mean physical harm inflicted on a child by a parent, guardian, or caregiver. It may also mean that there has been neglectful and/or dangerous acting toward the child by the adult. Emotional child abuse may involve verbal and mental abuse inflicted on the child by the caretaker or parent. Psychological neglect means that the caretaker does not provide the necessary emotional support and care for the child and is literally unable to ensure the child’s well-being.

Many states have laws against child maltreatment and sexual assault. These are crimes with criminal penalties. Commonly associated with child maltreatment or sexual abuse are actions like spousal abuse, child sexual abuse, statutory rape, forcible rape, kidnapping, false imprisonment, enticing, or encouraging child sex tourism, child pornography, and /or juvenile delinquency. In the United States, there are also laws against sex trafficking, child sexual abuse, and child pornography, which are enforced on an individual level and in many instances require proof beyond a reasonable doubt of the defendant’s guilt.

While some people are suspected of being abusive, not all cases of child abuse are based on proof of physical or sexual abuse. For instance, most suspected cases of child abuse are often based on allegations of emotional abuse. While it may be difficult to prove that a person has been emotionally abused, it is much easier to prove that the accused has been charged with sexual abuse or child abuse based on psychological evidence.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Emotional abuse, even if it does not involve severe physical injury, can create a substantial emotional scarring on a child’s psyche. Such scars can last a lifetime and can lead to a dysfunctional sense of self-worth, self-image, and self-image. The emotional harm inflicted by child physical abuse can manifest itself in behavioral patterns and can lead to a teenage boy or girl being withdrawn from their friends and social circles, losing interest in participating in school activities, and developing an anger toward their parents, other family members, and even fellow schoolmates. In extreme cases, emotional abuse can lead to a teenager spending years in an adolescent facility or a youth facility, which means a teenage boy or girl will spend more time in one place (a facility) than they would have spent in several normal schools (schools).

Child physical abuse is different from emotional or sexual abuse in that there is a clear indication that physical harm was inflicted, but there is often a difference between the degree of force used and whether the victim has received any counseling or therapy as a result of the abuse. Child physical abuse can also occur during times when a child is simply ill and unable to make sound decisions. However, child neglect, on the other hand, involves actions that are deliberately intended to cause harm and to inflict emotional trauma. When a parent deliberately neglects a child by denying them medical treatment or denying their basic needs such as food and shelter, the child is being physically and psychologically abused.

The best way for anyone to determine whether their child has been or is being abused is to see the documentation that has been kept regarding the situation. There should be an original court document detailing the child’s relationship with the caregiver and the acts of which the caregiver is accused. Additionally, there should be a written account from a third party that details the events of the alleged abuse. An example of this documentation could include a police report, a 911 call, a police investigation file, a journal entry, or an account from a worker’s compensation agency. If a parent is able to prove that their child has been neglected, but that their parents did not act purposely, the parent who is legally responsible for the child will most likely be awarded custody of the child.

As mentioned above, physical abuse may be difficult to prove because there is usually no indication whatsoever of the abuse occurring. However, it is important to note that even if a parent believes their child is being abused, it is possible for them to be awarded sole custody due to neglect. If a parent wants to take full legal responsibility for their child, they must ensure that they do all they can to prevent physical abuse from occurring. This can be done by checking the background of a potential partner, making sure that they have a clean record of criminal records, seeking legal advice for any potential caregivers, educating themselves about their child’s legal rights, and knowing how to react if they believe their child is being neglected. By taking the necessary steps and doing all that is required under the law, a parent can work toward a resolution that will ensure their child receives care and love that they deserve.

What Is Hand Foot and Mouth Disease?

by Cascia Talbert

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

hand foot and mouth disease

What Is Hand Foot and Mouth Disease?

Hand Foot and Mouth Disease, also known as Foot and Mouth disease, is a viral disease that has been identified as the most common infectious disease. There is a vaccine to prevent the disease, but many people have had bad reactions from the vaccine so they continue to be infected with the disease. The most common symptoms are food allergies, nasal discharge, stomach aches, and breathing difficulties.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that while we all know about chickenpox, smallpox, and mumps, the disease called “Hand Foot and Mouth” is not generally recognized as a contagious disease. When an individual contract the disease, it is not contagious until two weeks after the first symptom is noticed. Many persons have other illnesses such as pneumonia, heart disease, diabetes, pneumonia, cancer, and other serious conditions. In addition, some children have severe respiratory infections and may be in need of intensive care.

The disease can be spread easily through coughing or sneezing. In addition, the disease is easily spread from person to person through the air. Some individuals who cannot cough or sneeze often enough to infect others may contract the disease through the consumption of contaminated food. People who suffer from the virus may also spread the virus by sharing towels or cloths.

People who work as food handlers at slaughterhouses, laboratories, and other food processing plants are at high risk for contracting the disease. They are exposed to the disease by contact with the animal carcasses. Other food handlers may be at risk for infection if they touch the contaminated meat products.

Children are at the highest risk for this disease. Children are at a much higher risk of contracting the disease because they are not likely to develop immunity to the virus. The risk for developing immunity decreases as one gets older. This is also true for adults. Adults are at risk because they are at high risk for infection.

Health officials have identified the regions where the disease is commonly found in the United States as areas of the country where hand foot and mouth are common. These areas include the Southeast, North Central and Northwest areas, Southeast, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions, and Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Colorado.

In addition, Hand Foot and Mouth disease is prevalent in countries with lower incomes such as low income countries and Haiti. However, the disease is more prevalent in poor countries where most of the population does not have access to clean water, proper hygiene, proper nutrition, and poor health care facilities.

There is no known cure for the disease and there is no known cause or source of the infection. Experts suspect that the disease is transmitted by droplets that get into the nose or mouth. There is no way to prevent the disease, but doctors believe that you can reduce your risk of contracting the disease by being aware of your exposure to the virus and taking precautions to protect yourself and your family.

Preventing yourself from contracting the disease is not difficult. The virus will only spread if an infected person touches an infected object or person. If an individual contract the disease, the virus can be transmitted through the air and on contact with droplets or body secretions from an infected person.

When a person is diagnosed with Hand Foot and Mouth disease, he or she may experience flu-like symptoms and be observed by a doctor for several days. Although these symptoms are a sign of sickness, there is no specific test to diagnose the disease. It is important to see a doctor immediately when a person has a fever, a rash, or any other symptoms. It is very important to note that a lot of people do not have serious complications from the disease although it can be painful and lead to malnutrition if not treated quickly. Children, pregnant women, and small or elderly adults should avoid handling the disease infected meat. Pets and other animals should be kept away from the infected meat as well.

A healthy balance of bacteria is found in the nose and mouth. Individuals who have taken antibiotics should also refrain from touching infected items such as utensils, plates, knives, forks, counters, plates, cups, and other food handling utensils. Because of the poor sanitation in these areas, organisms which might be harmless to humans can be transmitted to people and animals through objects used to prepare food.

Heartburn – How to Cure Heartburn Naturally

by Tiffany Pratt

heartburn

Heartburn is a discomforting burning sensation in your torso that often can go up your throat and chest. This is a common symptom of a variety of digestive conditions, including GERD, acid reflux, and pregnancy. Heartburn may last from a couple of minutes to a few hours. Your doctor will be able to give you a prescription for antacids or other medications to help relieve the symptoms of heartburn.

Heartburn, like so many other stomach disorders, can be caused by certain foods that you eat. There are two types of food that are recognized to trigger heartburn: gastric acid and protonated acidic gas. For years people have thought that smoking, or chewing tobacco, was what caused heartburn, but it has been found that certain foods can also cause heartburn. The American Heart Association and the American Gastricenteric Association agree that the consumption of certain foods can cause heartburn. They state that certain foods such as tomatoes, spicy foods, and citrus juices are known to cause heartburn.

Antacids work by neutralizing stomach acid. Antacids come in both liquid and tablet form. Some of the medications available over the counter will include such items as histamine receptor blockers and antacids for heartburn, rhizantheline bromide, and proton-pump inhibitors. If you experience severe heartburn frequently you will probably be given a prescription for a medication called H2 receptor antagonists. These medications will block the effects of histamine, which is what is believed to be the cause of heartburn.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

Drinking soda may help reduce heartburn, but it may also contribute to the inflammation of your esophagus. If you find that your heartburn symptoms are severe and constant, you should drink more water and consider taking anti-cholinergic medications. Some of these drugs, such as alginates, reduce the level of stomach acid, which reduces the pain you feel. Anti-cholinergic medications should always be prescribed by a physician because side effects may include dizziness, lightheadedness, dry mouth, and sweating.

Another common symptom of heartburn is a burning feeling in the chest and throat area. Sometimes this burning sensation can extend down the esophagus and into the stomach. Chest discomfort and difficulty breathing can also be a sign of heartburn. In some people, the pain can extend into the upper arms and legs. These additional symptoms of heartburn may also be due to other underlying causes, so you should contact your doctor immediately.

To determine if your heartburn is being caused by GERD, a doctor will have to do a series of tests. He or she will monitor your heart rate, the acid level in your stomach, and the flow of blood through your body. If the cause of your heartburn is GERD, then the doctor will need to do a more detailed exam and take a culture and test your esophagus.

Heartburn usually occurs when stomach acid and food back up in the esophagus and cause damage. If you have GERD, this can cause difficulties swallowing and can even lead to asthma attacks. You should never ignore a heartburn episode because it could be the beginning of esophagitis. Seek immediate medical attention and don’t take any chances.

If you want to prevent heartburn in the future, you will have to change your lifestyle and avoid certain foods and drinks. To prevent heartburn, eat smaller, frequent meals. Try to keep your stomach full at all times and avoid eating large meals just before bedtime. Eat several smaller meals throughout the day instead of three larger ones. These lifestyle changes will help to strengthen your heart and prevent heartburn in the future.

If you are experiencing occasional heartburn, you might want to consider changing your lifestyle. Even if you are not suffering from GERD or a chronic illness, having GERD can often lead to GERD if you have weak or undeveloped muscles in your esophagus. Therefore, it’s very important that you consult with a healthcare provider if you have persistent heartburn or any type of GERD.

There are several over-the-counter medications that can help to treat heartburn, but these types of medications are only effective for mild heartburn episodes. In order to prevent future bouts of heartburn, lifestyle habits are the key. Make sure that you eat a healthy diet full of vegetables, fruits, nuts, and whole grains. Your healthcare provider may also suggest other lifestyle habits that can be beneficial to strengthen your heart and prevent heartburn in the future.

Some of the most common over-the-counter medications used to treat heartburn include antacids. Antacids provide immediate relief for heartburn and can reduce acid production in the stomach. These types of medications should not be taken for more than one or two days, as they can cause dehydration. Other medications that are commonly used to treat heartburn include acid blockers and histamine-receptor antagonists. Acid blockers lower the acid levels in your system and help to relieve symptoms while histamine antagonists block the release of histamine.

Registered Dietitian Shares Four Springtime Vegetables to Add to Your Diet

by Susan Bowerman, M.S., RD, CSSD, CSOWM, FAND – Senior Director, Worldwide Nutrition Education and Training, Herbalife Nutrition Susan

Spring is a great time to remind people about seasonal eating.  Seasonal produce is fresher; picked at its peak, it’s less likely to be processed or frozen or traveling long distances to get to the supermarket shelves— so choosing these foods also offers an opportunity to reduce your carbon footprint.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

The extended daylight and sunny weather during springtime promotes growth and renewal, and if you’re trying to eat a more plant-based diet, incorporating in-season fruits and veggies is a great way to start!

In reality, eating more vegetables is something many of us need to work on. Most of us aren’t getting even close to the 2-3 cups of vegetables we should be eating each day.

Susan Bowerman shares four spring vegetables, and the nutritional benefits they offer, to add to your menus this season:

Asparagus – A member of the lily family, asparagus is high in folic acid and a good source of potassium, fiber, thiamin, and vitamins A, B6 and C.  Asparagus is also a source of rutin, an antioxidant pigment that supports vascular health.Arugula – As a member of the kale and cabbage family, arugula contains many of the same antioxidant compounds called glucosinolates.  These compounds also give arugula its slightly bitter flavor.  Arugula is a source of vitamins A, C and K as well as folic acid; it also contains the minerals calcium, potassium and magnesium.Spinach– Spinach is one of the most nutrient-dense vegetables and belongs to the same plant family as beets, chard and quinoa.  It is one of the best plant sources of dietary iron, and is also a good source of vitamins A, C and K and folate, and the minerals manganese, and magnesium.  It gets its green color from several antioxidant pigments beta-carotene (which the body converts to vitamin A), lutein and zeaxanthin.Peas – Green peas are actually a legume, or bean, which is why they are a good source of protein.  They are also high in fiber and a good source of vitamins A, B1, B6, C and K.  They’re also a good source of iron and phosphorus.  Like other green vegetables, they get their green color from the antioxidant phytonutrients lutein and zeaxanthin.

Medicinal Properties of Eucalyptus Leaves

by LouAnn Moss

eucalyptus

Most everyone easily recognizes the aroma of eucalyptus oil, but few realize that this perennial tree possesses a wide array of botanical applications. Few people realize the value of eucalyptus for a multitude of industrial products and the advantages that are associated with its use. Many people also are not aware that eucalyptus has been used by indigenous people for centuries, as a medicinal and aromatic oil for ceremonies and rituals. It is widely used by many people today, but koalas usually come to mind when considering eucalyptus. These two species of Australia are the only ones that produce the true eucalyptus from the tree.

In addition to its numerous cosmetic benefits, eucalyptus has been shown to be an effective treatment for a number of health conditions. The oil of the leaves is applied topically to the scalp, as it contains a powerful component that fights against fungi, bacteria, viruses, and other disease-causing organisms. Other topical applications of the leaves have produced results similar to those produced by prescription medications. Eucalyptus is commonly used for head lice treatments because it kills head lice while still being gentle to the skin.

Like many of the ingredients found in plants, eucalyptus has both medicinal and cosmetic benefits. The oil is applied directly to the scalp, which is particularly effective for hair loss and dandruff. Eucalyptus leaves can also be applied directly to the skin, where they can help to relieve the symptoms of colds, flu, headaches, asthma, indigestion, menstrual pains, sore throats, sinus problems, and other respiratory issues. The Australian branches of the eucalyptus tree were historically used to cure the above-mentioned conditions, as well as being good for the skin, throat, and lungs. Medicinal and other health benefits of eucalyptus can also be derived from its application topically or internally.

The leaves of the eucalyptus tree are extremely aromatic. When fresh leaves are cracked and kept for several days, the eucalyptus oils within the leaves have been proven to have strong antibacterial and antiseptic properties. When these oils are mixed with a few drops of water, a thick foam is formed, which can be sprayed on the skin or taken internally with water. This foam acts as an antiseptic and antibacterial agent against tooth decay and mouth sores.

Clinical trials performed in Australia have proven the efficacy of the eucalyptus oil in the fight against bacteria, yeast, fungi, and parasites (such as Candida and Salmonella). For example, it was shown that it was effective in fighting against bacteria and fungi such as Shigella (which causes infections by yeast), Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus salivarius, and Candida albicans. In addition, it was found to be effective in the treatment of acne. These results were attributed to the antibacterial essential oils found in the tea-tree oil. Therefore, when using tea tree oil to fight off infection, one can see increased protection against bacteria, yeast, and other organisms.

A relatively new use of eucalyptus oil is in the area of insect bites and stings. It is widely accepted that insect bites can cause severe allergic reactions, which can be particularly severe if the individual has no knowledge of any underlying health conditions. For this reason, eucalyptus oil can be used directly on the skin, or massaged into the skin with a small amount of water. While it will not penetrate the skin, it can help to relieve the pain and swelling associated with insect bites. For this reason, many people opt to use eucalyptus oil on the skin when treating insect bites, especially if they are concerned about having an allergic reaction due to the ingredients contained within the tree.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

In another study, it was found that using eucalyptus oil on a patient’s burns reduced scarring dramatically. The use of the oil also appeared to be more effective than Listerine in terms of improving healing speed. When looking at the medicinal properties of the leaves, it seems that these medicinal properties are gained from the menthol content. Menthol is known to have an anti-inflammatory effect on the skin, reducing redness and swelling. This is in addition to the anti-microbial and anti-bacterial effects of the essential oil.

As mentioned earlier, the burning sensation associated with an attack of bronchitis is often thought to be caused by the inhalation of eucalyptus oil. Therefore, the application of eucalyptus oil to the skin can help to alleviate symptoms of respiratory conditions such as cough and chest pains. When combined with vitamin C, an essential nutrient, this combination can also prove highly effective in fighting bronchitis. It has also been found that pregnant women can take up to two cups of eucalyptus oil per day without any negative effect occurring.

Meal Prep with Your Kids with Limited Ingredients

by Susan Bowerman, M.S., RD, CSSD, CSOWM, FAND – Senior Director, Worldwide Nutrition Education and Training, Herbalife Nutrition Susan

Even with states slowly opening back up with social distancing guidelines in place, many have gotten used to cooking more meals at home. And with many kids not heading back to school until next school year, parents may still also be looking for ways to keep their children engaged with structured activities around the house. A great solution: cooking together! Involving kids in the food preparation process will make them feel included and encourage them to try new healthy foods.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});

We know that eating more meals at home is generally associated with a higher intake of healthy fruits, vegetables and dairy products that are recommended for a balanced diet, and usually with less fat and calories. Getting your kids involved in meal prep for the family offers even more benefits.

Kids can gain a lot from helping in the kitchen like learning about measurements, following instructions and reading recipes. Research also shows that kids can be encouraged to eat more healthy foods when they are involved in the meal prep. According to a report from the University of Washington, those who cook more at home have a diet that’s lower in calories, sugar and fat.

Registered dietitian, Susan Bowerman, shares how to get your kids involved in meal prep, using limited ingredients, in five steps:

Compile a recipe stash.

Use a system that works for you, whether it’s ripping recipes from a magazine and putting them in a binder, or bookmarking them on your computer or smartphone, and compile several easy recipes that you know everyone likes.  As a fun activity, you can also have your kids gather their favorite recipes to create a recipe scrapbook.

Make a list, then shop once a week… or less.

With limited visits to the grocery store, it’s important to prepare for your shopping trip or delivery. Get input on your list from the family. Check to see if you’re low on your staples in the refrigerator, freezer, and pantry so that you can throw together a quick soup, curry or pasta dish at a moment’s notice. Some good items to keep on hand:  canned beans, tuna and tomatoes; frozen fruits, veggies, meats, fish, poultry; eggs, yogurt, milk and low-fat cheese in the refrigerator.  Choose the longest-lasting fresh veggies and fruits such as citrus, apples, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, celery and peppers.

Think fast and easy.

How many times did you buy a whole spaghetti squash with the best of intentions, only to watch it rot slowly over time in the back of the bottom fridge drawer? Reach for shortcuts such as frozen veggies, pre-washed greens and pre-cooked or pre-seasoned meat to help cut down on cooking and prep time. If you need some great meat, then go to your local deli for some delicious options.

Prep once, cook twice.

If you know you’re going to use chopped onions, garlic and vegetables in more than one meal during the week, cut up everything at one time and store what you’re not using immediately in the fridge so you’ll have it on hand. Make extra rice or quinoa and store whatever’s left for a future meal and freeze it. You can also cook extra protein for two meals – the extra fish you grill tonight can be used for tomorrow’s fish tacos.

Master some one-dish wonders

Cultivate meals that balance your proteins, vegetables, and starches all in one dish. Consider chili, soups, pasta dishes, and casseroles.

Consequences – You Can Learn To Handle Them Better

by Tammy Jones

Consequences are something we all must deal with in our daily lives. For example, you might decide one day to lose some weight. You might decide another day to quit smoking. Perhaps a different person decides another day to start exercising more. The list goes on. While these things are positive changes in your life, they do not result in an end result because of what you have decided to do.

A consequence is anything physical or emotional change in your environment after a certain action, which makes the previous action more likely to occur again. In many ways this is similar to money. When I buy something, I know exactly what the price will be, even if I want it now. A consequence is not so tangible and obvious like money. However, in sports, consequences can be very real and very painful.

How much pain will you endure if you continue smoking or lose weight? Will you have cancer in your future? These are all questions which need to be answered. So how do you make changes to your life, which bring about the desired result without getting into too much negative change?

The first step is to recognize that there is a difference between regretting and thinking about what could have been. Many people who have failed at various things in life take life too seriously. They see all the mistakes they have made and immediately come up with solutions. They usually do not realize that they have not done anything to prevent this from happening. In the end, all their actions have simply brought forth what they already had in their subconscious mind.

The most important thing to realize is that most people would rather do the actions that result in fewer consequences but feel better about themselves, than do the actions that result in bigger consequences. Thus, if they are able to get out of trouble or meet someone new, they will not hesitate to take those steps. However, if they are faced with losing their job or having health problems, they will typically postpone those decisions until they regroup or regain their confidence. That is why the more important the decision is, the more often we delay making it.

You can change your behavior by understanding the difference between regretting and thinking about what could have been. When you find yourself in a situation where you desperately want to do something but cannot, take a look at your own behavior for clues. If you are often ready to regret past decisions and do not see any way out of them, chances are you are not living in a life filled with consequences. You would not accept a situation as a free shot, would you? You would want to know what will happen and when. The same is true of decisions.

Now that you are aware of the difference between regretting and thinking about what could have been, it is time to focus on how you can change your behavior. This means you must make a commitment to change. Once you have committed to something, you are better able to face its consequences. That is very important to your health, happiness, and even your financial well-being. People who are able to face their consequences, even the ones that seem undesirable, are happier than those who can’t. Happiness is a state of full involvement with your world and with yourself.

Finally, it is not always easy to face your consequences, so you need to learn to take them seriously. That means doing some serious soul searching to determine what is important to you, your values, and your sense of involvement with your life. Once you have made a decision, you need to live up to it. If you do not, your life will be filled with consequences you don’t welcome.

3 Things You Need to Know About COVID-19 if You Have An Autoimmune Condition

At this point, the global pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has impacted all of our lives in ways large and small. For many of us, we’ll be feeling the impact of this outbreak long after it’s gone. However, for those among us with an existing autoimmune condition, the necessity of taking every precaution to guard against this disease is particularly urgent.

Results from a recent study by Imperial College London indicate nearly 2.2 million Americans could die from the coronavirus within a year if we are unable to flatten the curve, and those already with immune system dysregulation are particularly vulnerable. This means that the 23.5 million Americans who suffer from an autoimmune disease need to do all that they can to protect themselves. Common symptoms of COVID-19 include: fever, chills, body aches, dry throat/nose, dry coughing and trouble breathing. It is a highly contagious virus that can affect individuals of all ages, but most severely affects older adults and those who have pre-existing conditions, such as an autoimmune disease.

Autoimmune diseases affect the body’s ability to fight the virus, and thus the symptoms of the virus become more severe. Many autoimmune diseases can compromise the body’s production of white blood cells that protect the body against foreign invaders. The lack of white blood cells prolong the length of time it takes to fight the virus, which causes the symptoms to get worse, and therefore puts those with autoimmune disorders at a higher risk.  Some of the most common types of autoimmune disorders are lupus, psoriatic arthritis, Type 1 Diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease. rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune thyroid disease and more. Although everyone should be taking precaution to prevent the spread of COVID-19, those with autoimmune disorders should be taking extra care to ensure that their health is not compromised during this trying time. Here are some important things to know about coronavirus if you are autoimmune compromised:

1.Go overboard in avoiding public spaces
While this should be a rule for everyone during this time, it especially applies to those with autoimmune disorders. In fact, if you’re reading this and you have an autoimmune condition, please understand that we as a society are practicing social distancing in part to protect you—so do your part! If you have an autoimmune disorder, ensure that you are doing everything you can to avoid public places. Self-quarantining includes having someone deliver your food (and sanitizing any food or packages upon receipt) and only leaving your house when absolutely necessary or for brief periods in open air locations with plenty of space between yourself and anyone else (six feet or more to be safe if you have an underlying autoimmune condition). It is important to note that this does not simply mean avoiding those who are sick or are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19. Individuals can have the coronavirus and be asymptomatic for up to two weeks. This means that there are a large number of individuals who are spreading the disease unknowingly, as they are not aware they even have it themselves. If you have the luxury of living near family or friends who are not autoimmune compromised, ask them if they are willing to help you receive all essential items that you are not able to go out and get.

2. Tests are in limited supply…but you are a priority
One of the main causes associated with the rapid spread of COVID-19 is the lack of adequate testing available to the public. Although tests are being developed that allow for more individuals to be checked and receive their results quicker, there are still not enough tests for every individual who has been exposed to the disease. It is important to note that if you have any symptoms, especially if you also have a pre-existing autoimmune condition, there is a COVID-19 hotline that you can contact and ask where you can get tested. A Google search of “COVID-19” or “coronavirus {your state}” can put you in contact with your state’s coronavirus hotline and access to medical centers that are currently administering Coronavirus Testing. If you feel that you are already experiencing more severe symptoms of the virus, contact your existing health care provider for the best steps on how to proceed—and make sure they are made aware of your condition.

3. Symptoms of COVID-19 are not immediate—even for those with an autoimmune condition
Similar to the flu, it is possible to contract the virus unknowingly and live asymptomatic for an extended period of time. Individuals with autoimmune conditions are likely to experience more severe symptoms quicker, however it exactly depends on the health of their immune systems. For example, those with pre-existing lung conditions are likely to experience trouble breathing/shortness of breath when compared to those with full lung capacity. Contact your health care provider if you experience any COVID-19 symptoms or have been exposed to someone who could be positive. If you are at risk because of an existing autoimmune condition, you cannot afford to sit back and wait to see how bad your condition gets before taking action.

When you have an autoimmune disease, your immune system has to work harder than others just to keep your body healthy and protected from regular day to day germs and bacteria. The most dangerous thing about COVID-19 is that our bodies have never been exposed to it before and there is no cure at this time. Some people who get it are asymptomatic and others experience nothing more than light cold symptoms, while others fall gravely ill. If you are someone with an autoimmune disease, you should not underestimate the possibility that you may fall into the latter category. Practice social distancing, wash your hands, follow the news—all the things everyone else is doing. But also pay attention to how your body is doing with your condition and be prepared to take action should you feel you may have been exposed. We still have much to learn about COVID-19 , but we know that anyone with a compromised immune system will be particularly vulnerable as we look to contain its spread.
