Ash Wednesday and the Start of Lent for Catholics

by Cascia Talbert

Today is Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent for Catholics. Millions of Catholics around the world will go to mass and get a mark on their forehead in the shape of a cross. The ashes that are used on Ash Wednesday come from the palms that were burned on Palm Sunday the year before. They symbolize both death and repentance. When the priest or deacon applies the ashes on the the forehead he says the phrase, “Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return.” It’s a way to repent, a theme that carries throughout Lent.

What is Lent?

“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.  And he fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward he was hungry” (Matthew 4:1-2)

Lent is the period of 40 days, plus Sundays, leading up to Holy Week and Easter Sunday. Lent can fall any time between February 4 and March 11 each year depending on when Easter falls. This year, Easter is Sunday, April 21. Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the spring equinox. This is why the date of Easter can vary so widely each year.

During lent Catholics offer sacrifices to God in order to share in his sufferings. He will then turn our sufferings into glory.

We set aside 40 days for lent because Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness fasting and resisting the devil’s temptations. Because of Jesus’ prayer and fasting he was able to overcome the temptations of the devil. Catholics are taught to pray and fast every day during lent so we can be strengthened against the dangers of this world.

Three Things Catholics are Encouraged to do During Lent

1. Prayer

We are taught to set aside extra time for prayer during lent. Jesus prayed while he was being tempted by the devil. Just like Jesus if we pray we too will be able to resist the devil’s temptations. We can not let the devil be in control of our society and world. The devil is doing his evil deeds through our politicians when they pass laws encouraging infanticide and the murder of innocent babies in the womb. He is also tempting us through the glorification of violence and sex in Hollywood movies and television. We need God more than ever.  Prayer can help us defeat the devil.

During lent Catholics can attend daily mass or pray the rosary every day. If we don’t have time in our busy schedule for that just saying a few extra prayers a day is good enough.

2. Fasting

Catholics are taught to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting is when we eat one meal a day and two smaller meals that are equal to one meal when added up. People between the ages of 18 and 59 are required to fast during lent. The sick are excused from fasting.

3. Abstinence

Catholics must abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and Fridays during lent. Meat is considered to be the flesh and organs of mammals and foul. Fish is a popular dish for Catholics on Fridays during lent. Many restaurants offer fish frys and seafood specials on Fridays in lent. Cheese, eggs and peanut butter are also acceptable protein sources.

Ash Wednesday

Other Acts of Penance

We are also encouraged to perform other acts of penance during lent. Penance means prayers and good works done to make up for our sins. Almsgiving is a form of penance that many Catholics practice during lent. This is when we donate extra money to the poor or charitable organizations that help the needy. We can also perform good works such as volunteering our time to help others.

Catholics believe that sometimes sacrifice is necessary to achieve what we want in life. Spiritual sacrifices such as prayer, fasting and alsmgiving are necessary for our spiritual needs. Jesus had to die so that he could rise from the dead. Jesus sacrificed his life so that we could have eternal life. When you get your cross of ashes on your forehead today wear it proudly and remember that because of our Lord Savior Jesus you will have eternal life with Him in heaven.

What Is the Difference Between Borderline Personality Disorder and Bipolar?

by Cascia Talbert

Bipolar and borderline personality disorders are issues that affect millions of adults. They are also widely misunderstood.

While these two disorders share many symptoms and signs, they are entirely different issues. Due to the differences, bipolar and borderline personality disorder require different methods of treatment.

Unfortunately, the similarities can also make the diagnosis process more of a challenge. In some cases, individuals may forgo treatment due to common misconceptions about these disorders.

Here is what you should know about bipolar and borderline personality disorders.

What Is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder that involves changes in mood, activity levels, and energy.

People suffering from a borderline personality disorder (BPD) or bipolar disorder are more likely to engage in impulsive behavior and experience mood swings. However, the way that these symptoms are expressed can vary.

Bipolar disorder results in alternating periods of mania and depression, which is why the disorder was formerly called manic depression. The manic and depressed states cause extreme mood swings.

The length of each period varies. People suffering from bipolar disorder may experience manic states that last for minutes, hours, days, or even weeks.

The mood swings can also result in dramatic changes in behavior throughout the day. Additional issues include changes to sleep patterns, energy levels, and social behavior.

What Is Borderline Personality Disorder?

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) also results in mood swings. However, it is a personality disorder. Besides changes in moods, it can cause abrupt changes in behavior.

BPD is a mental disorder that changes the way that you feel and think about yourself and those around you. It can lead to a variety of problems in everyday life.

People who suffer from BPD often experience seemingly random changes related to self-image, relationships, and social interactions. Unlike bipolar disorder, these changes do not include periods of extreme mania and extreme depression.

With BPD, the changes are often triggered by strong emotional responses to life events and social situations. People who suffer from this condition are also more likely to suffer from other mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

BPD sufferers are also at higher risk of dealing with body image issues, eating disorders, and addictions.

As with bipolar, the exact cause of the condition is unknown. Doctors understand that the disorder is likely linked to genetics and brain abnormalities. However, there are also risk factors for BPD, including childhood stress or trauma and PTSD.

Common Signs of Bipolar Disorder

As bipolar disorder includes periods of mania and depression, the signs of the disorder can vary depending on the current state of the patient.

For example, when experiencing mania, individuals tend to exhibit high energy levels and may act impulsively. When depressed, they may become low energy and shut themselves off from others.

Common symptoms and signs of bipolar disorder during manic states include:

Extreme happiness, anger, or irritabilityRacing thoughtsImpulsivenessAmbitious planningRapid speechHigh energy levelsReduced sleep

When bipolar individuals enter a state of depression, the symptoms of the disorder change. Besides generalized depression, the following symptoms are common during a depressed state:

Low energy levelsProlonged sadnessRestlessnessDifficulty concentratingAdditional anxietyLack of interest in favorite hobbiesLack of appetiteSuicidal thoughts

The changes in moods are rarely triggered by a specific event. The changes tend to come and go depending on specific brain activity, which is one of the biggest differences between bipolar and BPD.

Without treatment, this can be a difficult condition to deal with. The extreme changes in moods can lead to a variety of complications in everyday life.

Individuals may find it hard to maintain jobs or relationships. There is also a greater risk of legal issues stemming from impulsive behavior during periods of mania.

Common Signs of Borderline Personality Disorder

The symptoms of BPD are not always easy to detect. Bipolar causes extreme states of mania and depression. With BPD, changes in moods are more erratic and often triggered by an external stimulus.

Some of the main symptoms and signs of BPD include:

Difficulty managing emotionsImpulsivenessReckless behaviorPoor self-esteemParanoiaDepressionMood swings

Intense fear of abandonment is also a common symptom. These symptoms may also lead to additional issues. For example, people who suffer from BPD often have a history of unstable relationships, self-harm, or substance abuse.

Besides these symptoms, there are additional complications related to BPD. People who suffer from this condition are more likely to repeatedly change or lose jobs and face legal issues. They are also less likely to complete their education or remain in healthy relationships.

Mood Disorders vs. Personality Disorders

Bipolar is a mood disorder while borderline personality disorder is a personality disorder. With mood disorders, individuals experience serious changes in moods. With personality disorders, individuals exhibit uncharacteristic changes to their personalities.

When suffering from BPD, it is common to suddenly have conflicting emotions or engage in behavior that does not match social expectations or their own personal values. These behaviors can occur randomly or due to a trigger.

Bipolar individuals are less likely to exhibit behavior that differs from their normal behavior except during extreme states of mania. During these periods, individuals experience high energy levels and act more impulsively but are still unlikely to act against their own nature.

Diagnosing BPD and Bipolar Disorder

Diagnosing these conditions can be difficult and misdiagnosis can occur. These conditions also require detailed examination to determine if other mental or physical issues may be causing the symptoms.

Some therapists and psychiatrists require patients to keep journals of their moods and energy levels to help diagnose the conditions.

BPD is rarely diagnosed based solely on symptoms. A psychological evaluation is often used, which typically includes a clinical interview and may include interviews with friends or family.

Common Treatments for Bipolar Disorder

After diagnosis, treating bipolar and borderline personality disorders varies. Bipolar is often treated with a combination of medication and psychotherapy. The medication may be used as a long-term solution for dealing with this condition.

Mood stabilizers are the most commonly used medications for treating bipolar disorder. These medications can help regulate and stabilize the brain to limit the severity of manic and depressed states. In some cases, antipsychotics or antidepressants may be prescribed.

Psychotherapy is often used to help patients learn how to deal with their extreme mood changes. They may learn coping techniques for managing stress and anxiety or to calm the mind when experiencing extreme mania.

With treatment for bipolar or BPD, patients are typically advised to abstain from alcohol and drugs as they increase the risk of mood changes and may negatively impact treatment.

Common Treatments for Borderline Personality Disorder

Borderline personality disorder is also often treated with a combination of medication and psychotherapy. However, psychotherapy takes an active role in treatment while the medication is mostly used to control some of the side effects, such as depression or anxiety.

A psychiatrist uses psychotherapy to help patients understand the reasons for their impulsive or erratic behavior. They may help address past trauma or feelings that contribute to the current condition.

Continuous therapy is also used to give patients tools for dealing with their personality disorders. As with bipolar disorder, patients learn to cope with stress, anxiety, and mood swings.

There are also specialized forms of psychotherapy for dealing with BPD. Two common treatments include transference-focused psychotherapy (TFP) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).

TFP and DBT are often used to help patients manage their impulses as BPD sufferers are more likely to engage in impulsive behavior when triggered. These impulses may lead to destructive behavior including substance abuse, self-harm, and even suicidal urges.

Conclusion: BPD and Bipolar Are Not the Same

Bipolar and borderline personality disorders are not the same. While they both cause mood swings and impulsive behavior, the changes in moods are triggered differently.

Individuals suffering from bipolar often experience alternating periods of mania and depression while BPD sufferers experience erratic mood changes. The self-destructive behavior that some BPD sufferers exhibit is often caused by a trigger, either from a traumatic event or social interaction.

The bipolar mood swings often seem to change randomly. Individuals may experience a manic state for days before suddenly crashing and becoming depressed.

These conditions also require different treatments. Bipolar disorder is treated primarily with medication to help stabilize moods. Psychotherapy is used as a secondary approach to help patients develop coping techniques for dealing with their mood swings.

Borderline personality disorder is treated primarily with psychotherapy to help address the root causes of the condition. Medications may be used as a secondary method for dealing with some of the side symptoms, such as anxiety or depression.

In the end, it is important to seek treatment for either condition. Both bipolar and borderline personality disorders are often treatable and manageable with professional medical care.

The exact causes of these conditions remain unknown. With treatment, patients may enjoy productive lives. The first step in treating one of these disorders is contacting a mental health professional and scheduling an evaluation.

Boost Your Immune System This Flu Season

by Guest Author

With winter in full swing and spring right around the corner, we need to do all we can to arm ourselves against colds and flus – especially during allergy season. While vaccines are available to keep the flu at bay, many prefer to boost our immune systems naturally by maintaining a healthy diet. With that in mind, hyssop is an herb that is valuable in natural immune system support.

What is Hyssop?

The hyssop plant is a bushy, semi-evergreen herb that is native to Asia but has been naturalized to grow in Europe and parts of the U.S. It has been used for spiritual, culinary, and medicinal purposes throughout the years. It has been recognized for the many health benefits it can provide including its ability to support a healthy immune system.

Hyssop and the Immune System

The chemical compounds in the hyssop leaves and flowers are known to have antimicrobial and antiviral properties that can make it effective in supporting a healthy immune system. The oil obtained from the plant is rich in flavonoids, which are known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and their ability to support health.

And while hyssop can boost the immune system to reduce the likelihood of colds and flus, it can also help those who do come down with these illnesses to recover. When used in tea, it can help expel phlegm and break up congestion in the lungs. It can also promote perspiration which helps the body in reducing fever and releasing toxins through the skin to fight illness.

Hyssop can also be beneficial in its ability to support digestive health and wound care and ease an upset stomach.

How to Incorporate Hyssop into Your Dietary Routine

Hyssop can be found in a variety of over the counter products including capsules, liquid supplements, teas, lozenges and throat sprays, aromatherapy oils and more. The product you select will depend on your individual needs and what you feel will work best for you.

Getting sick is never fun. Not only is it distressing on a mental and physical level, it can be disruptive to your daily life and result in unwanted medical costs. Taking the right preventative measures can keep sickness away during this flu season. Incorporate hyssop into your routine as a healthy mom, and help maintain a healthier, happier family for the rest of the year!

9 Ways to Instill Gratitude in Your Children

by Hilary Thompson

While it is developmentally appropriate for kids (especially younger ones) to be self-centered, it’s never too early to start teaching your children how to be grateful. There are many benefits to cultivating gratitude, including an increase in positive emotions, better recovery from stress, and healthier physical habits. Here are nine ways to teach your children gratitude.

Set an Example

One of the best ways to teach kids almost anything is to set an example by doing it yourself. Children learn by imitating the adults around them. When you show gratitude toward others in your life (including your kids!) on a regular basis, they can often intuitively integrate this practice into their own lives. And if you’re having trouble getting in touch with your own sense of gratitude, make sure you’re the best parent you can be by scheduling personal time, finding ways to have fun, and spending intentional quality time with your kids.

Learn About the Miracles of Nature

Few things strike wonder into the heart of a child as much as the miraculous world around them. Take a nature walk and observe the symmetry in leaves, touch trees, cross rivers, breathe fresh air, and talk about how amazing it all is. If you can’t get out in nature, gather the family and watch a nature documentary together.

Even if you can take them for a weekend hike, documentaries and TV shows are a wonderful way to learn about other parts of the world and appreciate the vast diversity of nature. You’ll be delighted to hear their insights and the awe in their excited voices as they explore the world around them.

Give Them Less

Kids want things when they want them. But getting a lot of stuff runs counter to learning gratitude. The more you give them, the less special each gift becomes and the more there is to distract from what they have. When getting a new toy is a special experience, there’s more opportunity to be grateful for the gift.

Instead of buying something for your kid on the spot, ask them to think about why they want that toy over a few days and talk to you again when they know. Instead of automatically replacing something they’ve lost or broken, explain to them the value of taking care of their possessions. The practice of giving children fewer things also has the benefits of encouraging them to be creative in play, find satisfaction in other activities, and develop more appreciation for what they do have.

Make a Gratitude List

Taking a moment to stop and reflect on things that have happened in the recent past is a great way to foster gratitude in your children. You can make this a nightly practice, perhaps something you do at the dinner table or at bedtime along with reading. Or, sit down with your kids to make a gratitude list every week. Chances are, they’ve had experiences that week they’re grateful for even if they were not necessarily aware of their gratitude at the time.

Teach Them to Help Others

There are many ways, both organized and informal, to get your kids involved in helping others. This can be as simple as preparing a meal for a sick neighbor, or a longer-term project like becoming friends with an older adult in an assisted living home who doesn’t have family of their own to visit. There are many options for kids when it comes to volunteering to help someone. Giving to others teaches kids to appreciate what they have, which fosters gratitude.

Encourage “Thank Yous”

It may seem like a simple thing, but not all kids are comfortable saying “thank you” to others. Model this behavior by thanking service workers, your partner or friends, and your kids themselves when they do something you ask of them. If kids are shy, it can help to practice this simple exchange with them: Offer them something small and have them respond with either “yes, thank you” or “no, thank you.” Or have them role play with a favorite stuffed animal or doll.

Another way to instill this behavior is to keep thank-you cards on hand and write them with your kids when they want to express appreciation. You can pick out cards with the kids or try some free printable notes. These are perfect for giving to teachers, coaches, librarians, and friends’ families. Ask your kid what they want the card to say when they’re too young to write it themselves, and let them start writing on their own as soon as they’re able.

Include Kids in Meal Prepping

When things magically appear in front of children, they may not understand the work that’s gone into those things. Use something you do every day—meal preparation—to teach your kids about the labor that goes into the food they eat so they better appreciate those meals. This appreciation leads to gratitude for the food itself as well as the time you put into making it.

Give to Charity

Like helping others, giving to others helps kids learn to be grateful for what they have. This can be especially true when they give away things that may have felt precious to them. Set an example by making a regular practice of going through your own closets for stuff you no longer need and thus encouraging your kids to do the same.

If they get an allowance, you can suggest that they save a small portion every week to donate to a cause they care about. This will also help your kids think about the world and identify their own interests and passions.

Assign Them Household Chores

Like with toys, when kids have everything done for them, they don’t learn to appreciate the work that has to happen to keep things going. When your partner is away on a business trip and you have to do their household tasks, don’t you appreciate them more when they return?

Give your children manageable tasks, like taking out the garbage or setting the table. Be patient with them, and tell them you appreciate their work when they’re done. Talk to them about the chores you do, too, so they have the opportunity to understand that you’re doing things for them on a daily basis.

As you can see, there are many simple ways to build the practice of gratitude into daily life as well as new things you can encourage your kids to start doing that will help them engage with the world differently.

Survey: Parents Have Misconceptions About Opioids and Kids’ Pain Relief

by Brandpoint

(BPT) – News of opioid abuse, overdoses and reports that 90 percent of addictions start in the teen years could make any parent worry. Yet parents remain conflicted about opioids: While more than half express concern their child may be at risk for opioid addiction, nearly two-thirds believe opioids are more effective at managing their child’s pain after surgery or a broken bone than non-prescription medication or other alternatives.

That’s according to a nationwide survey commissioned by the American Society of Anesthesiologists  (ASA).

“The survey results shed light on the country’s conflicted relationship with and understanding of opioids,” said ASA President Linda J. Mason, M.D., FASA. “Opioids may not always be the best option. It really depends on the type of surgery and how long they are required. It is important for parents to know that there are many alternatives available that are as – or more – safe and effective for pain management.”

A physician anesthesiologist can create an individualized plan to best address patients’ pain based on the condition or type of surgery and decrease the risk of opioid misuse and addiction. Read on for four insights from the survey regarding opioids and pain management.

Mom Talking to Teen

1. Parents aren’t asking about effective alternatives.

While opioids can help with pain management for a few days after surgery or injury, effective alternatives do not have the side effects and risks of opioids. But the survey results suggest parents often don’t ask about alternatives, or aren’t aware of the options.

* 59 percent said they would talk to their physician about pain management options, but only 37 percent of those whose children were prescribed opioids did.

* 88 percent recognized non-opioid, over-the-counter medications, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil or Motrin) and aspirin, are used to effectively help treat pain. However, few were aware the same applies to other non-opioid options, including steroids (23 percent), antidepressants (9 percent) and anti-seizure medications (7 percent).

Beyond medications, non-drug therapies can help with ongoing pain, including nerve blocks, physical therapy, biofeedback, meditation, virtual reality, massage and acupuncture.

2. Parents are unaware that safe storage and proper disposal are key

More than half of people who misuse prescribed opioids get them from a friend or relative. Safe storage and proper disposal of the drugs are important to help curb the epidemic.

* Only 50 percent said they stored or would store opioids in a safe and secure place.

* 60 percent of those whose children took opioids said they needed fewer than were prescribed and had leftover medication. But only 39 percent of all parents disposed or would dispose of leftover opioids as recommended, including taking them to a local compounding pharmacy or health clinic, flushing them down the toilet or mixing them with dirt, kitty litter or coffee grounds before throwing them away.

* 61 percent correctly identified the ideal method of disposing leftover opioids, which involves taking them to a collection center at a local police station or drug disposal program at a pharmacy or clinic.

3. Parents understand importance of communication

When a child is prescribed opioids, parents need to have an open and honest discussion about the potential side effects and risks – not only with the child taking the medication, but other family members as well.

* 74 percent said they have talked to their child about the dangers of abusing prescription and over-the-counter medications and 20 percent said they intend to have the conversation.

* 91 percent said they are confident their children know that prescribed and over-the-counter medications can be just as dangerous as illegal drugs.

4. Parents recognize naloxone saves lives

Naloxone (Narcan) is a lifesaving medication administered via nasal spray or injection that rapidly reverses the effects of an overdose. It’s important to know about naloxone because anyone who uses opioids may be at risk for an overdose.

* 71 percent agreed that having naloxone on hand is the same as having other life-saving medication available for people who suffer from conditions such as allergies, asthma or diabetes.

* 80 percent said they would be more comfortable having it at home if their child or another family member was taking opioids.

* 92 percent thought all first responders should carry it.

The 17-question Engine Caravan Omnibus Survey was conducted online Nov. 25 to Dec. 2, 2018, among 1,007 parents of children ages 13-24, one-third of whom had been prescribed opioids.

Visit ASA’s website at asahq.org for information about all aspects of pain management and to access an opioid overdose resuscitation card that provides guidance on symptoms of an overdose and how to help.

Are You Low on Energy? These Surprising Factors May Be To Blame

by Guest Author

Do you feel like you can’t get going in the morning, or suffer from a mid-afternoon dip in energy?

Being a mom requires a lot of energy to keep up with your kids, run a household, and manage all your other commitments. If you lack the energy you need to do all this, things can quickly become a struggle! Running around after little ones is an obvious reason why you are feeling tired, but there are also other factors in your health and lifestyle which could be attacking your energy levels, including some which may surprise you.

Here are 6 reasons which may be to blame if you regularly suffer from low energy, which you probably haven’t thought of.

You Don’t Drink Enough Water

You are probably tired of being constantly told to drink more water: these days, it seems like the proposed solution to any and every problem is to drink water! However, water really is essential to our health in every way, and a lack of water can make us tired.

Failing to drink enough water causes cell dehydration, which can have dire consequences in the long run. Our bodies are programmed to notice this and protect us from potential damage as soon as we become deficient in water.  As soon as our system starts to run low on fluids, our brain and nervous system automatically kicks in to protect the body by slowing things down, which in turn makes us feel tired. Experts tell us that we should drink a minimum of 1500 mL or 8 glasses of water a day, more in hot or humid conditions, or when exercising.

Your Diet is Lacking in Nutrients

A healthy, balanced diet is critical for overall health, and for maintaining energy levels. The vitamins and nutrients in food provide our cells with what they need to function, and keep our bodily processes working properly. If we don’t eat enough foods containing these vital nutrients, things will not run properly, leading to fatigue.

Experts tell us we should eat a balanced diet full of unprocessed foods, including high amounts of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes and protein. Of course, doing this in practice is not always so easy: see this article for ideas on how to get more vegetables into your diet.

You Are Stressed

Stress is not only bad for your mental and emotional well-being, but it can also make you feel tired. Scientific research shows that stress causes a range of physical health problems over time, contributing to tiredness. Being under continued stress for long periods of time also causes an excess of the stress hormone cortisol in the body. This hormone releases adrenaline and helps to deal with crisis situations in the short term, but excess levels over the long term lead to crashes and exhaustion.

This is fairly ironic, because it means you have less energy to deal with whatever is stressing you out. Break this cycle by employing stress management techniques such as participating in meditation, yoga and taking exercise. Even better, if possible address the cause of the stress, and eliminate this from your life.

Your Hormones are Unbalanced

You probably know that hormones, and more particularly hormone imbalances, can affect your mood and well-being. You may not realize, however, that having the incorrect level of hormones in your system can also attack your overall health, making you feel tired and worn out.

Services like Verisana let you conduct a simple saliva test at home to check your hormone levels. Hormone imbalances are relatively common and can be caused by a variety of factors, from serious health issues to something as common as simply getting older. If you test your levels and find your hormones are out of whack, you should visit your doctor to determine the cause of the imbalance and discuss treatment options.

You’re Not Active Enough

If you feel tired, working out is probably the last thing you want to do. However a lack of exercise could be the cause of your tiredness. Not having enough activity in your daily lifestyle, your circulation can suffer, meaning your body is not as efficient in delivering oxygen to your cells, which lowers your energy levels. Additionally, getting regular exercise helps you to maintain good sleep patterns, which will support good energy levels throughout the day.

Experts tell us we should aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise, three times a week. As a busy mom, finding time to work out can be difficult, if not impossible. Start by integrating small amounts of exercise into your daily routine, such as 10 minutes of yoga in the morning or a brisk walk before the school pickup run.

A Closer Look at Autoimmune Reactivity and The Form You Eat Your Food In

by Dr. Chad Larson

Raw, Cooked or Modified FoodsThere once was a time when all we (thought) we needed to think about when eating was whether the foods we’re putting in our body are healthy or not—but things change and now we’re learning that we have to consider how to eat them. And for those who have or are at risk for autoimmune disease, this consideration can be even more critical.

Scientific studies show a link between GMOs and health problems, inflammation, a higher risk of disease, intestinal damage and—in extreme cases—death. Dr. Amy Myers, author of the New York Times bestseller, The Thyroid Connection, best explains why. First, GMOs contain more pesticides and toxins than non-GMOs. Overexposure to pesticides and environmental toxins can trigger autoimmune disease and worsen a preexisting condition. Second, GMOs can cause leaky gut, which in turn can lead to autoimmune disease, and inflammation, which aggravates the condition. Finally, GMOs can disrupt your gut microbial balance by decreasing the good bacteria and increasing the bad bacteria. In a nutshell, there is a lot of downside to making modified foods a part of your diet—especially if you suffer from autoimmune disease.

It is widely known that for optimal health we simply must eat whole foods. But what a lot of people fail to understand is that GMOs are not limited to processed foods in a box. Even whole foods can be modified. In fact, an estimated 92 percent of corn and 94 percent of soy grown in the U.S. are genetically modified! The best way to avoid modified whole foods is to buy organic fruits and vegetables and eat meat from cows that are grass fed and poultry from free-range organic chickens (though keep in mind that meat and dairy—even grass fed or free-range—can also be trigger for inflammation in some individuals).

With GMOs settled, we move on to the next question: Raw or cooked? Some believe that fruits and vegetables should be eaten in raw form for the highest nutrients and that cooking them destroys some of the enzymes, vitamins and minerals. Others maintain that cooked foods are easier to digest and allow for better absorption of nutrients. The truth is that yes, cooking veggies can eliminate some of the nutrients. But different foods have different reactions, with some producing more minerals through the cooking process. For example, cooking vegetables can increase the amount of calcium they provide. Ultimately, for the average healthy individual, eating a balanced diet of both raw and cooked vegetables and fruits will provide the best intake of nutrients.

For those with autoimmune disease, an altered diet might be necessary. Just as foods react differently to the cooking process, so do our bodies. It is important to remember that everybody (and every body) is different. Our systems, although similar in function, are made up of different genes, unique chemistries, varying levels of digestive enzymes, different absorption rates and so on. There are many foods that are known to be inflammatory in general, but it varies from one person to the next, especially based on whether the food is consumed in raw or cooked form.

Taking stock of how your individual system functions best, which foods best fuel you (and in what form) and those that lead to negative reactions, is your best path forward for a healthy lifestyle, particularly if you have an autoimmune condition. An elimination diet can be helpful in determining foods that are problematic for you; however, this can be a timely, frustrating and inconclusive process. For those seeking more efficient answers, Cyrex Laboratories, a clinical immunology laboratory specializing in functional immunology and autoimmunity, offers multi-tissue antibody testing for the early detection and monitoring of today’s complex autoimmune conditions. The Array 10C – Comprehensive Food Immune Reactivity Screen – assesses the most advanced array of wheat/gluten, dairy proteins and food proteins in raw, cooked and modified forms.

Proper diet and nutrition are essential for optimal health, fighting disease and feeling our best. While we should follow scientific evidence as a guide, our individual chemistry and function must also be taken into account. If you suspect you have hyperimmune reactivity to foods, seek the advice of a doctor and inquire about whether testing might be a good option for you.

Sneaky Ways to Get Your Kids Eating Healthier

by Brandpoint

(BPT) – Every parent knows it can be a challenge to get kids to eat healthy foods. Serving piles of vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins might be our goal, but it might not guarantee that children will actually eat them.

Registered dietitian Dawn Jackson Blatner offers tips for upping the nutrients in family meals without your kids suspecting a thing.

Pack the meatloaf with vegetables. If meatloaf is a family favorite, you’re in luck. It’s easy to add finely grated vegetables like carrots into your meatloaf mix without anyone being the wiser. Carrots are loaded with nutrients such as fiber, potassium and beta-carotene. Or try adding minced celery, green peppers or spinach to meatloaf (or meatballs!) for a nutrition boost. You can also combine cooked lentils with your ground beef for a leaner meatloaf without sacrificing flavor.

Italian favorites with added veggies. When cooking Italian dishes like lasagna, adding chopped broccoli or spinach to one of your layers is an easy way to increase its nutritional value. Boost nutrition of jarred pasta sauce for any Italian dish by pureeing in your favorite cooked veggies like broccoli, carrots, squash or peppers without anyone noticing. This powered-up sauce is great for making homemade superfood pizza, too.

Asian stir fry at home. Instead of relying on Asian takeout meals, make stir fry at home. It’s quick and easy, and you can buy pre-cut chicken or beef to speed up your prep time. Get fresh or frozen veggies like sugar snap peas, grated carrots, broccoli florets and peppers and stir fry with soy sauce and a bit of ginger and garlic powder. It’s a high-veggie, craveable meal loaded with vitamins and fiber. Serve with brown rice instead of white for even more nutrition.

Use the best ingredients. Choosing your ingredients with care makes a huge difference in nutritional value. Blatner says that using Eggland’s Best eggs makes any recipe more nutritious, as they contain more than double the vitamin B12 when compared with ordinary eggs. “Vitamin B12 transforms food to energy that kids need to play and grow,” says Blatner. They also contain more vitamin D, which helps a child’s body absorb calcium, a mineral that bones need to stay strong and grow properly, according to the National Institutes of Health. Compared to ordinary eggs, they have 25 percent less saturated fat, plus contain more than double the omega-3s and 10 times more vitamin E.

To celebrate National Nutrition Month this March, Eggland’s Best and Life Time 60day are challenging families across America to Plus It Up when it comes to their overall nutrition and wellness routine. For the chance to win prizes such as free product coupons, gift cards, fitness trackers, cooking equipment and more, enter the Eggland’s Best “Plus It Up” Instant Win Sweepstakes at EBPlusItUpSweepstakes.com. Cook Time: 15 minutes

Yield: 6 servings

Recipe by: TermiNatetor Family Kitchen

Ingredients

3 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (roughly 1 pound total), cut into 1-inch pieces
1 cup breadcrumbs (Panko works too!)*
1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Salt and pepper
1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/2 cup all-purpose flour*
3 Eggland’s Best eggs (large)
Cooking spray

Preheat oven to 450 F.

In a shallow bowl, whisk together breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, salt, pepper and seasonings.

In two separate bowls, add the flour in one and whisk the eggs in the other.

Set a wire rack on a rimmed baking sheet and lightly coat rack with cooking spray.

In batches, coat the chicken in the flour, shaking off excess, then in the egg wash, then in the bread crumb mixture, pressing to adhere.

Place on rack.

Bake until chicken is fully cooked, about 12-15 minutes, flipping halfway through.

*Dawn’s Healthy Swap: Use whole grain instead of regular bread crumbs and all-purpose flour!

BubbleBum the Foldable, Ultra Portable Inflatable Car Booster Seat

by Cascia Talbert

Busy moms need simple solutions to make their lives easier.  If your family travels frequently checking in a bulky car seat at the air port is a hassle and can also be expensive.  It would be nice if there was a car seat that you could just fold up and toss into your carry-on.  Now there is!

Introducing BubbleBum the Award Wining Foldable, Ultra Portable Inflatable Car Booster Seat

BubbleBum Inflatable Car Booster SeatBubbleBum is an award winning foldable, ultra portable inflatable car booster seat (for ages 4-11) invented by Irish mom Grainne Kelly. She was frustrated and concerned for her children’s safety while traveling and decided to do something about it.  This car seat is ideal for daily use, road trips, car rentals, Uber and Lyft rides, carpooling and more.

BubbleBum Inflates and Deflates for Easy Storage

The best part about BubbleBum is that it inflates and deflates and easily fits into a backpack, large purse or tote bag. Inflating it can be a challenge. If you do not do it properly the car seat will lose its air quickly. It took me a couple of tries to figure out how to inflate it. Deflating the BubbleBum car seat was a lot easier.  All you need to do is twist the air valve to begin letting out the air and then roll it up. It comes with a draw string tote for storage while deflated.

BubbleBum is not inflatable in the same way as a beach ball, it is actually more complicated than that. It is filled with memory foam technology, which provides structural integrity, and in the event of a crash stabilizes the flow of air within the inflatable chamber. Thanks in-part to this memory foam, the BubbleBum has been crash tested and approved even when it is not inflated. That means that if the seat gets punctured in the event of a crash, it will still protect your child as you would expect a booster seat to.

Child Safety Seat Recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics

The AAP recommends:

Infants and toddlers should ride in a rear-facing car safety seat as long as possible, until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by their seat. Most convertible seats have limits that will allow children to ride rear-facing for 2 years or more.

Once they are facing forward, children should use a forward-facing car safety seat with a harness for as long as possible, until they reach the height and weight limits for their seats. Many seats can accommodate children up to 65 pounds or more.

When children exceed these limits, they should use a belt-positioning booster seat until the vehicle’s lap and shoulder seat belt fits properly. This is often when they have reached at least 4 feet 9 inches in height and are 8 to 12 years old.

When children are old enough and large enough to use the vehicle seat belt alone, they should always use lap and shoulder seat belts for optimal protection.

All children younger than 13 years should be restrained in the rear seats of vehicles for optimal protection.”

Always make sure your children are using the proper car safety seat for their age and size.

Other BubbleBum Safety Features

BubbleBum’s internal webbing harness runs all the way around the front of the seat, under the cover. This webbing, holds the inflatable section of the seat in position. It is attached to the 2 red side clips, and so in the event of a crash, it causes the clips to pull the lap belt down on the strongest part of the child’s body.

BubbleBum is not just an “occasional booster seat”. In truth, there is no such thing as an “occasional booster seat”. BubbleBum is perfectly safe to use on a daily basis for all your family travel needs whether it’s a long road trip, or daily school drop offs, errands, play dates, etc.

BubbleBum Car Booster Seat

While there are other portable devices on the market, BubbleBum offers the crucial ‘boost’ provided by a true booster seat which is important because it provides height, which raises the child up, so that their legs fall comfortably downwards towards the floor. Without the boost, if the child is positioned correctly, with their back firmly against the back of their seat, their legs would be at a right angle to their body. A child in this position will quickly become uncomfortable, and to compensate they will slouch in the seat introducing slack into the vehicle seat belt. In the event of a crash this slack can cause the lap belt to ride up into the soft tissues of the child’s abdomen causing life threatening injuries.

BubbleBum offers Comfort, and Convenience, without Compromise, keeping EVERY child safe on EVERY journey.

BubbleBum Designs

BubbleBum comes in black, chevron pink, and three international designs: Stars and Stripes, Union Jack and Irish Shamrocks. You can purchase BubbleBum on Amazon for $29.99.

History of Cinco de Mayo According to Encyclopedia Britannica

“Cinco de Mayo, (Spanish: “Fifth of May”), also called Anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, holiday celebrated in parts of Mexico and the United States in honor of a military victory in 1862 over the French forces of Napoleon III.

When in 1861 Mexico declared a temporary moratorium on the repayment of foreign debts, English, Spanish, and French troops invaded the country. By April 1862 the English and Spanish had withdrawn, but the French, with the support of wealthy landowners, remained in an attempt to establish a monarchy under Maximilian of Austria and to curb U.S. power in North America. On May 5, 1862, a poorly equipped mestizo and Zapotec force under the command of General Ignacio Zaragoza defeated French troops at the Battle of Puebla, southeast of Mexico City; about 1,000 French troops were killed. Although the fighting continued and the French were not driven out for another five years, the victory at Puebla became a symbol of Mexican resistance to foreign domination. The city, which was later renamed Puebla de Zaragoza, is the site of a museum devoted to the battle, and the battlefield itself is maintained as a park.

The day is celebrated in the state of Puebla with parades, speeches, and reenactments of the 1862 battle, though it is not much noticed in most of the rest of the country. In the mid-20th-century U.S., the celebration of Cinco de Mayo became among Mexican immigrants a way of encouraging pride in their Mexican heritage. Critics observed that enthusiasm for the holiday celebration did not take off with a broader demographic until it was explicitly linked with the promotion of Mexican alcoholic beverages and that many U.S. festivities tended to both perpetuate negative stereotypes of Mexicans and promote excessive drinking.

Cinco de Mayo is not to be confused with Mexican Independence Day, which falls on September 16. The latter holiday was established in 1810, some 50 years before the Battle of Puebla occurred.”
