Listen below or subscribe on iTunes or Google Play

Ep. 15 is packed!

There’s a hard hitting mailbag, covering both same sex attraction and what to do after you’ve unintentionally seen porn on your computer.

Noah talks about Covenant Eyes’ Custom Block List, which they just brought back.

Kids puking on a whale watching tour.

Living with the in-laws.

Noah is trying to be young and hip so is now using Instagram @noahfilipiak – He is asking for help on what Instagram is for, besides selfies and food pics.

Limits.  And the quote, “When the pain of staying the same becomes greater than the pain of change…THAT’S when people change.”

And the topic of the day: How an urban, multi-ethnic church planter ended up in rural Middleville and working at a suburban megachurch

The Lies of Lust: Fantasies That Won’t Satisfy

fantasy, sexual purity, freedom, lust, pornography, covenant eyes

fantasy, sexual purity, freedom, lust, pornography, covenant eyes

When you think about all traps, the foundational lie that they sell is getting you to believe something is real that really isn’t.  You’ve probably bought products you later regretted because the reality didn’t match what was promised by the advertisement.  The classic is the beautiful real estate in Florida being sold for a great deal, only for the buyer to find out later it’s swampland that can’t be built on.  The Proverbs 7 examples of animal traps would also match this, but in a deadly way.  You put some bait in the trap, the animal walks in thinking it’s going to get a delicious meal.  The delicious meal is the animal’s perceived reality.  The cheese or peanut butter or chunk of meat looks and feels so real.  In some ways it is real.  But it’s a good thing placed in a destructive context.  The true, ultimate reality, the only reality that actually matters, is death and destruction for this animal.

“…like a bird darting into a snare, little knowing it will cost him his life.” Proverbs 7:23

The bird would have never entered the snare if it knew it would die!

A lot of us who struggle with lust know this truth, yet continue to fall into its trap…

Ep. 14, Noah’s sermon, “When Your Hope is in the Best Thing”

Listen below or subscribe on iTunes or Google Play

Noah just moved to Grand Rapids and is living with his gracious in-laws until his house in Lansing sells.  As a result, there’s not yet a quiet place to record so this is a bonus episode of a sermon Noah preached on January 20th, 2019.  It is on 1 Peter 1:3-12 and is the last sermon he preached at Crossroads and the most recent sermon he has preached to date!  Be encouraged by the true source of our hope, whatever our circumstances.

The Lies of Lust: Promises That Never Deliver

lies, lust, promise, love, value, jesus, wholeness, covenant eyes

The “Lust Trap” can reel you in anytime, anywhere. Its strong pull brings you in like a sci-fi tractor beam. The graphic imagery of Proverbs 7 describes it like an ox going to slaughter, a deer walking into a noose, or a bird darting into a snare, little knowing it will cost him his life.

Most of us can relate to these metaphors. One moment you are minding your own business, the next you are caught up in an insidious trap, too late to be able to do anything about it.

The Lust Trap is a web of lies. Lies that we believe. Lies that make promises that never deliver.

Ep. 13 (or 75) Community as Step 2 of the Father’s Love Healing Our Shame

community, love, shame, jesus, gospel, healingListen below or subscribe on iTunes or Google Play

community, love, shame, jesus, gospel, healing

The last few Flip Side episodes have had the theme of the Father’s love healing our shame.  Shame being the feeling that we aren’t good enough, that we don’t measure up.  Last episode focused in on what truths to remind ourselves of (vs. the lies of shame).  This episode follows up with the key step 2 of the process, and that is having brothers and sisters in Christ who model the Father’s love to us.  We take a look at what this looks like, including opening up the mailbag to hear how people have experienced this in real time.  The mailbag entries also give some thoughts about church small groups.  Noah then weighs in on what he thinks of church small groups, and gives listeners a layered plan for finding healing community in their lives.

Ep. 12 (74) Carrying Your Cross as the Antidote for the Never-Ending Cycle of Seeking Approval

Episode 12 provides a practical path to walk to fill the hole inside of us that screams out for approval and to be told we are valuable.  We typically attempt to fill this hole with sexual sin and fantasy, as well as anything from money, our reputation, to our last three Facebook posts.

Noah’s Rant describes why it would be better if robins were extinct.

Show Notes:

Jamie Winship talking about shame and living in the truth, instead of believing the lies.

Behind Every Woman’s Body is a Woman

When you look at pornography, what you end up seeing is a long line of naked bodies. When you look at pornography for years, you end up seeing years and years’ worth of long lines of naked bodies.

I do a lot of work with guys who, in their past, looked at porn for years. They don’t look at porn anymore, but they have a very hard time controlling where their eyes go when real-life women approach them…
