That Bloke off the Telly

Vintage-Tv-2-psd75131

Guttering Logarithmicfunction is undoubtedly the UK’s leading That Bloke off the Telly. At first, when he began in local TV news in the Droitwich area, he claimed that he hoped that one day people would come to recognise him in the street, but ‘I never expected to win the That Bloke off the Telly Award, and certainly not for the last ten years running.’

However, it was after an on-air incident featuring a rather excitable un-tamed polecat and his genitalia, that Logarithmicfunction shot to na...

Earth and other unlikely worlds: What Is The Clarke Award For?

Paul McAuley writes:

It seems quite simple. It is, according to its simple self-description, an award for ‘the best science fiction novel published in Britain in the given year’. A measure and celebration of achievement in science-fiction writing that isn’t limited to novels published within the science-fiction genre. But what is meant by ‘best’? and what is meant by ‘science fiction’?

The Blue Notebooks

Navy-Moleskine-notebook-524x393

So many things lie out there, beyond the reach. Each hand reaches out to touch and to hold, hoping for the feel of some human warmth against the cold. Each eye opens, wanting to see the light of possibility pulling the day from the darkness. Each heart beats with the need to go on living against all the outrages an indifferent and unknowing universe ranges against it.

Each morning is a beginning made possible by the night before and the times that have gone by. All those times are gone now, o...

New at ABCtales : When She Sang

wave-1215449_640

First, she sang me the song of mornings, giving the sun a tune to rise to. Weaving the words of the day around the early hours as the trees, hills and the day grew out of the morning mists. Then she sang us a love song, using up a few hours of the morning as each verse wrapped itself around us while we lay together, joined in the chorus of skin against skin.

Cartoonist Robert Mankoff, also Cartoon Editor for The New Yorker, explains laughter:

Humor — more specifically, humor done standing up in front of an audience — is something that humans can claim all to their own.

It’s Time to Ditch Discoverability |

James Scott Bellon getting the elusive attention of readers:

Ever since the self-publishing boom took off, authors and industry types have bemoaned the “discoverability problem.” How can a new author, especially a self-publishing one, possibly get discovered in the tsunami of content flooding the market?

Social Media as an Olympic Sport

social-media-logos_15773

Plunge Stoatdangler became the UK’s leading social media complainer at a very young age when she noticed that there was something slightly amusing about a mislabelled Cup-a-Soup packet on the shelf at her local supermarket. Of course, as is essential these days, she immediately photographed it on her smartphone, wittily captioned it ‘OMG. I literally cannot believe this!!! #funny, #brilliant, #supermarketfail’ and uploaded it to every social media site she was connected to, as well as Google+...
