Coming to Costa Rica?
Picture yourself escaping the chill of February over President’s Day weekend to soak up the Costa Rica sunshine.
Since 2002 I’ve been hosting annual retreats at Pura Vida Spa— private mountainside estate enveloped in lush flora surrounded by coffee plantations.
We wake up early with the chirping birds, nosh on local food, practice yoga and mindfulness, and nosh on more food. Then we take a few hours to rest, read, swim in the pool, or get a spa treatment, and do more yoga followed by a creativity session involving paint, collage, and a sketchbook. Oh, and eat again.
Most of us make our way to bed shortly after the sun goes down or enjoy a soak in the hot tub under the stars. Rinse and repeat.
Here’s what Courtney from North Carolina has to say about her annual retreat experience:
This retreat is magical. It is the perfect blend of movement, creativity and utter relaxation. Kimberly’s yoga practice combines asana and breath work in ways that have left me relaxed and energized at the same time. Even better, the creativity sessions have helped unlock my right side brain (which has been used very little during my legal career), opening up a whole new world to me and giving me the courage to explore my artistic side on my own. In short, the changes that I’ve experienced on my retreats with Kimberly have led to life-altering adjustments in my career and family relationships. In addition, Pure Vida is a beautiful resort with caring staff and experienced practitioners who offer a wide range of body work options. But maybe my favorite retreat activity has been resting in a hammock between classes and treatments, listening to the birds and catching up on the latest bestseller, with a smoothie or a glass of white wine.
And Hilary from Washington, DC:
You can find many yoga retreats to Costa Rica, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find one as special as Kimberly’s. I have been three years in a row and would go again in a heartbeat. As the name suggests, this retreat is a unique blend of yoga, mindfulness, and creativity. It’s a perfect retreat to go to on your own. Kimberly creates a warm, friendly, and inviting space and then let’s you take what you need and leave the rest. It’s an ideal combination of group time, personal time, and do-whatever-you-feel-like time at a beautiful eco-chic resort with yummy food, a welcoming staff, and heavenly pool. It’s a mix of lovely ingredients that make for a magical week. And the secret sauce is Kimberly, herself. She puts an incredible amount of thought into every aspect of the program—from the extra suitcase of art journaling supplies she brings, to the essential oils she dots on your wrist during savasana, and the goodie bags she creates for each yogi. Treat yourself to the experience, and you won’t be disappointed.
Both of these lovely ladies have joined us the past few years and are an absolute joy to host! Per usual, we have an intimate, magical group signed up for February and fellow psychotherapist and Tranquil Space-trained yoga teacher Kristin Heinz will be teaching the afternoon yoga sessions.
Tomorrow marks the end of the Costa Rica $150 off early bird rate and I’m not sure if I’ll be hosting this retreat the following year.
So if you’d like to spend time nurturing your yoga, mindfulness, and creativity practices, reflecting on what’s meaningful, drinking Costa Rican coffee, reading in a hammock, going on optional excursions, and nourishing your soul, now’s the time!
If you have any questions about it, reach out and I’ll be happy to answer them. Bisous. x

NYC Delights
Last weekend I headed to NYC for a weekend of vegan nosh, ballet, yoga, and more with my friend Jenn who owns a lovely yoga studio in Montreal. During our whirlwind 48 hours, we stumbled upon a few new finds and hit staples, too.
In case you have a jaunt to NYC on the radar, I wanted to share these resources. I’ve also included three additional posts below highlighting previous NYC adventures.
Our first stop was Vegan Love, a tiny spot on East 10th that had lots of delights such as raw pizza, green juice, muffins, avocado toast, and more.
Next we headed to our AirBnB to drop our bags and then stopped into a corner cafe called 5C Cafe. Their menu had five vegan options so we noshed on mac and cheese and tacos.
On to Rockefeller Center to see the tree and pick up some goodies for her family. Oh, and stop at Eat By Chloe for a vegan cupcake. With full and happy bellies, we set out to see To Kill a Mockingbird on Broadway. SO good! We crawled home exhausted after a full day.
Saturday started at The Butcher’s Daughter followed by lots of wandering through Nolita, NoHo, and the West Village en route to our early afternoon ballet class at Joffrey Ballet School. Before ballet, we hit Moo Shoes and stumbled upon Sweets by Chloe for another cupcake and matcha lattes. To fuel our ballet, naturally. The class was amazing and Jenn did her first sous-sus (as shown above).
Post-ballet required vegan pizza at Double Zero followed by turmeric lattes and cake at Plant Made. Then we headed to Village East Cinema to see Can you Ever Forgive Me? Again, we stumbled home pooped. But not like the stumbling we saw with all the Santas who had been doing an all-day bar crawl. That was a sight. They had all started out so jolly and fresh as we headed to brunch that morning.
Sunday morning my feet ached as I slid out of bed. I stood in the shower for 20 minutes trying to warm up and relax my poor muscles. We packed up and hauled our bags to The Organic Grill for brunch. So very yummy and our waiter was a dear! Oh, and I ran into Gene Baur of Farm Sanctuary there. Heart that man and his amazing work!
Our final stop was Jivamukti for a one-hour, 35-minute yoga class. But who’s counting, right? My body hadn’t moved that way in a long time and I felt like a puddle of body parts.
Jenn headed for the airport and I sat in their cafe sipping rose tea, noshing on my go-to Yogi’s Choice menu option—brown rice, spicy tempeh, steamed kale—and trying to recover from all the movement. Hello, anti-inflammatory.
Then I headed toward a Maison Kayser near the train station to have tea with someone I met back in 2004 at George Washington University Women’s Studies graduate program and we’re now both therapists (and aspiring ballerinas).
The journey culminated with a luxurious train ride home in the quiet car and a pick up by Tim and the pups. So grateful for this getaway, friendship, and all the tasty treats that we put into our bellies. Bisous. x

Meet My New Project {Seeking Beta Readers}
I’m over the moon to announce my latest project, the Year of Tranquility book—a marrying of the Year of Tranquility program with the Playbook/Daybook for an all-new yearlong, BIG picture adventure in a full-color 8×10 book.
Since January I’ve written nearly 25,000 words, spent over 250 hours creating, and poured passion into the Year of Tranquility program. Nearly one hundred ladies joined us from far and wide to connect, encourage, and gain weekly inspiration on living with more tranquility.
Here’s what a few participants had to say about their experience:
The Year of Tranquility program is the perfect balm for reconnecting with creativity and adventure, whether it’s outward adventures like “artist’s dates,” or exploring the inner self through self-care and introspection. YOT is a wonderful companion to daily living, and Kimberly is a wise, enthusiastic, and compassionate guide!
YOT has been a lovely experience and investment in my mind, body and soul this year. There is always so much inspiration and ideas to pull from that can be applied to our day to day lives. Kimberly has a gift for considering the whole person with her creations.
I have absolutely loved committing to a year all about me through YOT! I’m a working mom of two young kids and I feel like I spend so much of my energy focused on others. YOT has given me the permission and time commitment to focus on me! It feels amazing so self reflect in such a healthy, positive way. Because of my time in YOT, I have lost 30 pounds, grown my veggie garden, cleared clutter in my house, got out of debt, signed up for a tap class, and generally have more time to do what is most important to me! Thank you Kimberly for such an amazing class!
This outstanding year-long program delivers on all its promises! I am enjoying my best year—infused with the tranquility that comes from setting intentions, taking action and making time for reflection.
Inside the book you’ll find your favorite Playbook/Daybook features such as wellness, month’s dreams and review, year’s dreams and review, 32 Tranquility Tools, checklists, recipes, and more {sans weekly layouts}. You’ll also find 12 monthly essays, 4 weekly practices, and Savvy Sources on topics such as dreams, creativity, style, self-care, yoga, mindfulness, and more.
And, YES, there will be a 2019 program associated with it and that’s to be announced. Stay tuned!
I’m in the editing stage and seeking beta readers. If you’d like to be considered, please email me noting why it interests you and your editing experience by noon ET Friday, December 14. As a thank you, each chosen beta reader will receive the finalized PDF, a special gift, and heaps of gratitude.
Thank you for considering and I hope you’re as excited about this as I am!
The book will be available for pre-sale on Amazon shortly. More to come. Now, excuse me while I return to editing! Bisous. x

November in Review
Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home.—Edith Sitwell
Month in Review
Ah, November, you were sweet, swift, and succulent. From Paris cafes to ballet classes to sitting with clients, last month offered a variety of experiences.
En route to my own therapy appointment in the rain, I slammed on my brakes to avoid hitting the person in front of me who had stopped abruptly and my tea thermos spilled all over the Jeep console. This led to three trips to the shop, a dead battery, constant jumps because the new battery would also die, a malfunctioning electrical system, software updates (cars get updates now?!), and a parking brake that wouldn’t release so it could be towed.
It’s back to the shop and fingers crossed it’s really getting fixed this time. Funny how one brief moment can have such a ripple effect. Darn tea.
This month I finished an online Journal Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy class, met with mentoring and therapy clients, took ballet classes, wandered the streets of Paris, returned on Thanksgiving for a vegan meal with Tim, created and released the Year of Tranquility Entrepreneurship module, got lost in Paris, had another gum surgery (second side), created and reviewed a Tranquility du Jour survey (still chewing on it), released two podcasts, attended a Stargazing with Pigs event at Whispering Rise Animal Sanctuary, attended a Lady Farmer Slow Living Retreat (where I met those goats in the top photo), upset my Jeep’s electrical system, saw A Star is Born in Paris and cried (how did I not know it was sad?!), sent heaps of snail mail, and soaked in the tub daily.
As I turn my attention to the final month of the year, I’m feeling both pensive and hopeful. 2018 has offered so much—a new pug (GIZMO!), a full-time office space, Pigs & Pugs events, Year of Tranquility. I look forward to tying a bow around it this month with a combination of reflection, intention, and creation.
Wishing you a sacred and soft month. Let’s carve out space to celebrate, give and create experiences, hibernate as needed, and add a dash of lavender to our hot cocoa. As always, thanks for reading! Bisous. x

Tranquil Holidays {Checklist, Video, Playlist}
The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.—Helen Keller
Ah, the holidays. Despite the festivities, garlands, and twinkle lights, this time of the year can feel a bit, well, less than tranquil. To combat the chaos, I’ve tried to adjust my expectations and output over the years.
No more holiday cards. No more piles of gifts. No more trying to squeeze it all in. No more guilt. Simplicity has become my motto. The space between Christmas and New Year’s Day is my rejuvenating reset button.
Our new tradition: head to Tim’s cabin in West Virginia, go to a movie and enjoy Chinese on Christmas Day, roll out the sofa bed in front of a never-ending fire, stay on said sofa bed to read, watch documentaries, and nap. Rinse and repeat for a few days.
What would be your ideal holiday? Time alone. Time surrounded by family. Travel. Staying home. Big meals. Takeout. Candlelight service. Watch Santa’s travel on TV. Big parties. A table for two. The ways to celebrate are endless and shift as we do.
Over the years I’ve dabbled with ways to keep the holidays feeling more tranquil inside and out. While this list is not exhaustive, the suggestions are tried and true. Try those that resonate.
1. Get outside. Brisk, fresh, outdoor air helps ground me. Take in the scent of pine trees and wood smoke. Time in nature builds on a sense of interconnection. This larger view helps put things in perspective.
2. Center. During the hustle and bustle, it’s extra important to make time for self-care. Keep up your favorite centering practices such as sipping tea, sitting on a meditation cushion, writing in your journal, practicing on your yoga mat, or soaking in the tub.
3. Give. Gift your loved ones a batch of homemade jam, a beloved book, an artisanal treat from a small business, a box of their favorite tea (or whip up your own blend), or tickets to see an exhibit. Think useful and consumable. Go for experiences. Rescue an animal. Volunteer. Sponsor a farm animal. Donate to a special cause. Adopt an orangutan.
4. Compassion. This time of year can be hard. Be gentle with yourself and others. Know we’re all doing the best we can. Practice loving-kindness meditation. This may have been a hard year. Honor your growth, lessons learned, and what’s to come.
5. Breathe. When you notice your shoulders creeping up toward your ears, your heart racing while stuck in traffic, or stress building, tune into your breath. Inhale to the count of four, exhale to the count of four, repeat. Again and again. Try this 5-minute meditation.
6. Travel with ease. Print and save the Tranquil Travel checklist on Tranquil Treasures. Save space by rolling your TranquiliT pieces into your luggage. Choose layers perfect for mixing and matching, dressing up (pearls and heels) or dressing down (clogs and denim jacket). When possible, choose off-peak travel to avoid congestion.
7. Gratitude. Appreciate the little things: a warm bath, a steaming cuppa tea, a cozy bed, a devoted pet. Studies show that expressing gratitude can lower stress levels, help you sleep better, improve self-esteem, enhance empathy, and adjust your attitude.
8. Move. Exercise releases endorphins, reduces stress, and helps offset those extra holiday cookies. Put on your hiking boots or tennis shoes and hit the trails. Roll out your yoga mat and do a few sun salutations. Grab your bike and begin pedaling.
9. Celebrate. If you’re feeling a bit of the bah humbug blues, put on your favorite holiday film, create a playlist of festive tunes (here’s one for you!), go see The Nutcracker, and put up a few holiday decorations that evoke good memories. Review the year and list highlights.
10. Dream. Create time to daydream about the new year. What do you hope to see, taste, touch, smell, and hear in the coming year? List everything that comes to mind and focus on the experiences you hope to have.
Have 45 minutes? Watch this video where I share even more!
Any favorite tips that you infuse and I missed? Do share!
Wishing you a holiday filled with your favorite things. Let’s make this season meaningful. And tranquil. And simple. Bisous. x
P.S. Never fear, new Santa pic coming with Gizmo as soon as possible!

The Art of Evolution
We must be willing to get rid of the life we’ve planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us. The old skin has to be shed before the new one can come. If we fix on the old, we get stuck. When we hang onto any form, we are in danger of putrefaction. Hell is life drying up.—Joseph Campbell
Although it’s not yet December, I find myself in full-on contemplation mode wanting to reflect on 2018 and get clear on 2019. Clarity, always seeking clarity. As if there’s some right answer. {Hint, there’s not}.
I’ve reviewed nearly 100 responses to my recent survey and am blown away by your ideas and requests for support in topics ranging from style to mindfulness to building a business. Thank you for your time and thoughtfulness!
Through this process I’m recognizing that I need to go back to the basics and define for myself what Tranquility du Jour is. Yes, it’s a resource for finding more tranquility in the every day. And yet what are the underlying values? Things like creativity, style, dreams, self-care, giving back, eating and living well, etc.
Over the next many weeks I’ll work on clarifying this for myself and, ultimately, to help shape what’s next for the blog, podcast, and events of Tranquility du Jour.
Never fear, I don’t envision a massive shake up, but more of a deepening and streamlining into its next phase.
When searching for a quote to go with today’s post, I came across the one above by Joseph Campbell. It speaks to the importance of growing, stretching, and evolving. As we head into the winter months of hibernation and death in the natural world, I find it helpful to use this time to do the same for ourselves.
Step back, slow down, get quiet, reflect.
I’m wondering, what can we shed to make room for what 2019 has waiting for us? How do we want to evolve in the new year? Rather than a massive overhaul, let’s consider an energetic shift. Exhale. Bisous. x
