Pen to Paper: Lists
Sometimes our stop-doing list needs to be bigger than our to-do list.—Patti Digh
Ah, lists. Many of you are probably familiar with a to-do list, yet there are many other lists that we can write and create.
List-making helps to curb that anxious, overwhelmed feeling of too much swimming around in our heads. Studies have shown that imagery is useful for people with anxiety, so making your lists beautiful can alleviate some of those anxious feelings swirling around.
It’s also a space for creativity. When making our lists with color and design like hand lettering and flourishes, we bring a creative streak into our every day experience. Just google “bullet journal lists” and you’ll be filled with inspiration!
Below you’ll find an assortment of list ideas to get you going:
Worry, excited about, gratitude, want to do, bucket, dreams, today’s accomplishments, ideal day, morning ritual, evening ritual, holiday gift list, stop doing, holiday menus, birthdays and anniversaries, journaling prompts, food diary, current projects, meeting notes, exercise log, grocery, meal planning, recipes to try, movies to watch, books to read, restaurants to try, wish, seasonal bucket, places to visit, fitness goals, mood tracker, things I love, favorite quotes, memories, blog posts to write, videos to shoot, things to photograph, monthly budget, items to buy, reading log, playlists, date ideas, outdoor activity ideas, causes you care about, blogs to follow, favorite Instagram accounts, packing lists, day trip ideas, job application log, essential oil recipes, beauty routine, self-care, relationship wish, career wish, habit tracker, pet care, child care, personal care, Q4 list, garden care, to be, home care, sanctuaries to visit, rescues to support.
Create a list beyond your to-do list and to have fun with it. Rather than the typical ballpoint pen on lined paper or a digital list, make it colorful, add doodles or flourishes, or write on a beautiful image pulled from a magazine. Grab your journal, a magazine, markers, washi tape, and do a little brain dumping. Make it uniquely you.
Share your photos using #tranquilitydujour. I can’t wait to see what you create! Bisous. x

A Peek Into Saturday’s Virtual Retreat
Life begins again when it gets crisp in the fall.—Fitzgerald
On Saturday we streamed the Softening into Fall Virtual Retreat from the Pink Palace (my tiny DC condo) with a live audience—three hours writing, reflecting, moving, meditating, and creating.
To combat the fur from four black pets all over white furniture, floors, ceilings, you name it, I spent all of Friday turning my home into a workshop space.
Tim baked kale chips and other detox-friendly treats. I washed curtains and slipcovers, rearranged the furniture, and hid all of my non-essentials (paperwork, jars of markers, files). It’s A LOT of work to adjust a small space to accommodate a group, yet it always feels good to see the open space.
The afternoon’s programming centered around the theme of softening into fall and included a seated yoga flow, creating in our art journals, practicing mindfulness, and spending time in reflection.
I also shared tips to infuse mindfulness, yoga, and creativity into daily life and focused on providing a three-hour experience to nurture virtual and in-person attendees’ inner artists.
One participant shared, “Having three full hours set aside where I shut off all notifications on my phone and put it away and then gave my full attention to a wonderful community of ladies all around the world to dive deeper into our inner lives and dreams was downright magical. It helped me to tune into what I most need right now in my life and decide what I want out of the next few months.”
That made me smile. A BIG smile. It’s so nice to hear that your work has made a difference . . . to even one person.
The retreat is now available for purchase and comes with a 30-page Playbook, TranquiliT discount code, and a three-hour video for you to retreat at your own pace.
As always, a portion of all proceeds benefit Pigs & Pugs Project—assisting pug rescues and pig sanctuaries across the US.
Thank you for your support in person, virtually, and in spirit. It means so much and I LOVED being with you! Bisous. x

Life Lately

I’m restless. Things are calling me away. My hair is being pulled by the stars again.―Anaïs Nin
Last week we drove 40+ hours road trip to Oklahoma (yes, where the wind comes sweeping down the plains) with three pugs in tow.
Three days focused on the slowing down and savoring that happens in the Great Plains—first fire of the season, soak in a claw foot tub, late night movies, vegan cake, walk in the woods, time with loved ones, 15-minute walks to the mailbox. All good for the soul.
Today I hosted the Softening into Fall Virtual Retreat (group photo above) and launched the 7-day detox.
The previous few weeks have been filled with equally exciting events: saving a blind baby rat from the alley (named him Freddie, story to come), TDJ Live, Brunch at TranquiliT Trunk Show, yoga with pigs, Pugs & Pints, and gum surgery (not recommended)!
Output requires input. When I read the above Anaïs Nin quote, it so resonated. While I’m not sure what the restlessness is about, I’ve felt something brewing, so I’ve made plans to set out on a weeklong Artist Date in Paris to explore it. Finding a $450 flight sealed the deal!
Booking a flight to Paris is not a requirement for exploring restlessness, it can also be done through journaling, local Artist Dates, time with friends, therapy, and more, of course.
Yet, when I realized my travel this year had been work related, I thought a solo jaunt with no itinerary may be just what the doctor ordered—especially with a ticket price like that!
I’m offering one more experience before I curl up into replenishment mode, Writing Salon—a 2.5-hour in-person workshop to nurture your inner writer. This happens next Saturday in case you’d like to join.
In the interim, I’ll be feeding my restlessness with a Humane Rescue Alliance black tie event with the pups, ballet classes, and listening to Eve Ensler and Anne Lamott. Wishing you a joyful weekend filled with input and a dash of output. Bisous. x

Why Retreat + Scholarship
There is a connection between self-nurturing and self-respect.—Julia Cameron
For the past 15 years I’ve hosted retreats as a way to step out of our day-to-day to reflect on the bigger picture, slow down, and reconnect with our dreams. Sometimes we do this in Paris, Costa Rica, West Virginia, or Italy.
When I began offering virtual retreats in 2016, I was able to share a nugget of these retreats to experience from the comfort of your own home.
This Saturday from 12-3pm ET I’m hosting my last scheduled online offering of the year, Softening into Fall Virtual Retreat and we still have spots available.
The three hours are devoted to self-care and personal growth and carefully crafted to offer inspiration, education, and the practice of tranquillity tools such as yoga, mindfulness, and creativity.
Here’s what others had to say about their virtual retreat experiences:
I’d forgotten how much fun art journaling can be – especially not having to stay within the lines, cut with a scissors, or make something perfect. The last time I wrote in my art journal was January 2015. So much has changed since then, and this exercise helped me to shift my perspective to embracing change and discerning what I need in my life to spark joy.
I’ve been to local day long yoga workshops and enjoyed being with a group. But I have to say, being the introvert that I am and loving my quiet time, this was something I would do again and again. Being in my own familiar space, relaxed but at the same time connected with everyone by your video and the Facebook Group. You thought of everything!
The Virtual Retreat is exactly what I needed during this busy time of the year for me. As an introvert with an extroverted job and tendencies, it was wonderful to give myself the opportunity to “check out” for the day while still being in my own space. I lit candles and incense, put on soothing jazz, and spent the whole day in my comfiest clothes virtually connecting with my favorite yoga and mindfulness guru. I also loved that we will always have access to the modules. I have been on a few retreats with Kimberly, and leave wishing I could take it all with me. Now I can!
When I decided to sign up for Kimberly’s Virtual Retreat I wasn’t convinced that it would work. The idea that I would be able to cut off the phone and commit myself to the experience seemed a bit of a stretch. Yet, I was able to stick with the schedule, ignore the phone-text -email messages, and fully immerse myself in the activities. If you aren’t able to free up the full day, I think it would work use the videos and break the sessions into two half days.
I can’t thank you enough for such a clearly thought out virtual retreat. It was such a blessing not to need to get dressed, drive to an airport, not have to put on make-up, and to be comfortable in my own home without distraction (except for my two fur babies).
This retreat provides a chance to hit the pause button, reflect, learn new skills, and focus on what’s most meaningful to you.
If you can’t join us live, you will receive the replay to retreat at your own time.
If you have any questions about the experience, please let me know.
Finally, if you’d love to join but can’t afford it right now, reach out by Friday noon ET and share why it would be meaningful to you. I’ll choose a few submissions to join as my guest.
Thank you for supporting Tranquility du Jour. I LOVE being with you! x

Softening into Fall Virtual Retreat October 20
There is a connection between self-nurturing and self-respect.—Julia Cameron
Imagine three hours devoted to self-care and personal growth without having to leave the comfort of your own home.
Join me for a half-day online retreat on Saturday, October 20 (12-3 ET) carefully crafted to help you reflect, set intentions, and soften into the fall season among the company of like-hearted women. Bask in inspiration, education, and the practice of tranquillity tools such as yoga, mindfulness, and creativity.
Here’s what Kirsten had to say about her spring virtual retreat experience:
The chair yoga was greatly appreciated and made me realize how much more I need to do of it to ease those constantly-sitting-in-front-of-computer muscles. And would agree that your version of art journaling is so fun and eye-opening. I am always surprised by what comes out on the pages after creating them. When I closed the page yesterday at the end, I felt so refreshed and relaxed after the retreat and full of energy.
This retreat provides a chance to hit the pause button, reflect, learn new skills, and focus on what’s most meaningful to you. If you can’t join us live, you will receive the replay to retreat at your own time. Hope you can join us!

FREE 7-Day Detox Starts Saturday
Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.—Michael Pollan
October 20-26 is our next FREE seven-day detox and you’re invited to join us!
We’ll have a kickoff at noon ET on October 19 HERE and each day you’ll receiving inspiring emails and encouragement to support you along the way.
To join, sign up HERE.
Here’s what a few former participants had to say:
My intention is to stay wIthin this eating plan as much as possible. I’ve wanted to learn more plant-based recipes and back away from excess sugar for a long time. After the first 2-3 days, my body and mind took right to it. I feel so much better in just a week! I’m here to say that a week of healthy food, walking and some yoga has really made a difference for me physically and mentally. —Yvonne
Every time I detox I learn so much about myself. It’s amazing the impact of discipline and observation. I totally broke the detox with honey a couple of times, but I’ve been really good about shifting my internal messaging that I’ve been clean about 99% of the time, so that is worth a celebration!—Betsy
Hope to see you on Friday at noon! Here’s to eating more plants this fall. Bisous. x

September in Review
The trees are about to show us how lovely it is to let the dead things go.—Unknown
Month in Review
Sunday night I reviewed my September’s dreams (my word for goals) list, eager to check things off during my month’s review. To my dismay, only 1/3 of the items were completed. And, it’s the same day that Apple sends the weekly phone usage data (new with the upgrade) and that, too, was horrifying.
Deflated, I turned to October, glued in an inspiring image, and began to pen its dreams with a black Sharpie. Many of my September’s dreams were carried over with a sigh.
Despite the lack of accomplished dreams, September offered many charms. Some highlights include a relaxed Labor Day complete with a matinee (Three Identical Strangers) and sitting at a cafe just chatting with Tim, an Alanis Morissette concert, a 22-hour road trip to upstate New York and Montreal, time with Tim’s family at their annual corn roast, celebrating Tim’s birthday over vegan poutine with our dear Montreal friends and their adorable kids, catching up with friends over tea and vegan nosh, taking many ballet classes, making a tough decision about Daybook 7.0, reading A Paris All Your Own, finalizing the TranquiliT fall collection complete with a photo shoot, video, and trunk show, watching The Washington Ballet perform at The Kennedy Center and falling in love with Bolero, collaborating with clients, and hosting the fall Tranquility du Jour Live and a month of mindfulness for Year of Tranquility.
And . . . I booked a trip to Paris. As mentioned in recent Months in Review, I felt a bit restless and dreamed of a solo getaway without an agenda. So I watched for cheap flights to Paris and found one for $450. It felt too good to ignore! I leave a week before Thanksgiving and return on Tofurkey day to spend the holiday with Tim and the pups. My vision for the City of Light adventure is to spend hours writing at sidewalk cafes and practice flânerie (wandering and observing).
I also watched Dr. Ford’s testimony with tears in my eyes and shook in rage. Our society’s treatment of sexual assault is horrifying and our President’s comments are disgusting. May we all continue to grow in empathy, compassion, and resistance. Women deserve better.
If you’d like to let go of outdated beliefs, identities, or dreams to make space for who you’re becoming, join me for the Softening into Fall Virtual Retreat on October 20. We’ll reflect, do seated yoga, practice mindfulness, and art journal about slowing down and tuning in. Bisous. x

Writing Salon
I write entirely to find out what I’m thinking, what I’m looking at, what I see and what it means. What I want and what I fear.—Joan Didion
One upcoming Saturday afternoon I’m opening up my office to host a writing salon—a safe space to write, learn, and connect and you’re invited.
My vision is to share tools to enliven our writing, tips to create time and space for writing, prompts to practice in the moment, and ways to share our voice with the world.
Wouldn’t it be delicious to work on our writing habit in a cozy, creative setting while savoring vegan treats, organic tea, and community? Details soon to follow.
