Day 3,936: Know Thyself
Another day, another ten pages biiiitches. Yeah!
It’s easy for me to forget that I’m writing a book faster than I ever have before. It’s disorienting. As it always is whenever I’m doing something I haven’t done before. That disorientation is exhausting. I’m fighting burnout right now. But, it’s something I want to get done. It’s something I can do. I want to learn from it.
I write pulp. It’s plot-driven. The characterizations are thin. The prose is light and easy to read. It’s candy.
Th...

Day 3,935: Rippin
Definitely struggling with the resistance at the moment, but what’s crazy is that I’m used to ten pages a day enough now that…I just do it. Even though the resistance part of me is freaking out and trying to put a halt on everything—for no other reason than just, I’m actually getting this novel done; which is to say, no sane reason—I sit down in my chair and crank out the requisite pages day in and day out. That basically a miracle. Really it’s not, nor is it a mystery: it’s hard work. Work I’ve...

Day 3,934: Patrol
My car has two new tires. The old ones turned out to be EIGHT YEARS OLD, which is wild…but I’ve only put like thirty or forty thousand miles on them in that time (hey hey, the benefits of working from home!) so the single flat didn’t mean it was necessary to change all of them. We changed two, so they could be rotated together and wear evenly. Also had them fix my dead sensors, so no more constant low pressure icon on the dash. Next up: an overdue oil change, and then Schnoops will be in perfect...

Day 3,933: Ambiguity
Ambiguity is when something has multiple meanings at the same time. It’s not either/or, its and/with.
Ambiguity is present in almost all great art. It’s deeply satisfying, and an acknowledgement of the real world we live in where so rarely we get a definitive yes or no answer on anything.
I got my pages done today. I’m feeling burnout. At least I did today. Tomorrow, hopefully, I’ll be back in the groove, but we’ll see. It’s the “easy push” I need. Less trudging through, and more just goin...

Day 3,932: Swelter
I think I’ve learned something: I need a day off each week. I planned to write all the way through the weekend today, and get another ten pages down—seemingly easier than it was going to be yesterday, given I didn’t have anything planned outside of the house today—but that went out the window pretty much as soon as I decided to walk the dogs first when I got up, rather than get a start on the writing for the day. That’s another thing I’ve learned: when the spoons are low and the fatigue is high,...

Day 3,931: Late!
Oh boy, it’s late.
I (almost) hit 200 pages on the manuscript today. Woohoo! Should be good for at least halfway done. We’ll see. Some fun POVs in this book. It’s a few characters I haven’t spent much time inside their heads to this point, and/or their brand new. So, it takes a little work here and there. They’re not as comfortable as some of the others, like Drake or Carrol, who I know like the back of my hand, now. But that’s the challenge you know? That’s what makes this book interesting, ...

Day 3,930: Oh You Will
Ten more pages. Boom! Happy about it. Action sequence today, which meant the words flowed pretty easily. I ended the chapter with a moment I’m not happy with. It’s not quite right. I’ll tweak it later.
Work was slower today, finally. Still decently busy, but not AS busy. Projects are wrapping up. Less balls in the air all at once will be nice.
Was supposed to podcast tonight with Josh, but he had some stuff come up last minute. Just as well; I’m pretty wiped. I went and got a bottle of win...

Day 3,928: Feel It
Man. Another long work day! But a good one. I still got my ten pages done, and I’m wrapping up two different projects at the same time. Early, actually, which is always nice.
Whew.
Watched some Slalom Canoe (which looked a lot to me like kayaking, but what do I know). Some team fencing. Saber fencing, which I didn’t realize was different from foil fencing, which is what I think most of us think of when we think of fencing.
Joy just interrupted this blog entry to attack my face with some...

Day 3,927: Crumb
Busy day again today! I was at it from 7am to 8:30 pm today, including all the writing. Work went late. Pages were done. I watched Simone Biles and the rest of the women’s team take gold; Liz and I got to do that together, which was really nice. Loving the Olympics this year, we are. And I know we’ll do the same for the winter olympics in two years. They look so nice on our big, beautiful TV.
Need to get a good night’s sleep. Night night.
