Day 1,666: Tell Your Sister

Tell your sister…you were right…

The Ho and I watched the despecialized Return of the Jedi tonight. You know, as an adult now, it’s undoubtedly the weakest of the three…but man, it still works for me. I know so much of that viewpoint is influenced by how old I was when I first watched it, and don’t get me wrong, there are definitely sequences that are clunky…but it still works.

I think all the stuff on Endor is fun. All the sneaking around, the chases, the battles, even the Ewoks. I think the...

2018 Movie #28: Cars 3

I enjoyed the first Cars well enough. It was definitely an off-movie for Pixar, in that it didn’t reduce me to a puddle of emotion, or teach me about life, childhood, and adulthood…but it was fine. The second Cars was not good. I don’t even remember what it was about. So, I went into this THIRD Cars movie (they gotta sell those toys, right?) with much, muuuuch trepidation…I was pleasantly surprised!

THE BLURB:

Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast cars, the legendary Lighting McQueen...

2018 Movie #27: Baby Driver

What a pleasant surprise this movie was! I feel like their marketing campaign didn’t do enough to convey just how unique and inventive this movie really was…because it was DOPE.

THE BLURB:

Baby, a music-loving orphan also happens to be the prodigiously talented go-to getaway driver for heist mastermind Doc. With the perfect soundtrack picked out for each and every job, Baby ensures Doc’s violent, bank-robbing cronies – including Buddy, Bats and Darling – get in and out of Dodge before it’s to...

Day 1,664: The Contract

Every storyteller is offering a contract: they’re reaching out their hand, saying “come with me, I want to show you something.” They’re saying “trust me. Let me lead the way, follow me, and I *promise* I won’t let you down.”

I never forget someone who lives up to that promise, man. Ever. I don’t think any of us do. It is truly one of the purest and most powerful joys in life to be in the hands of a good storyteller.

Every minute I spend writing, I’m trying to live up to that contract.

I’m get...

2018 Movie #26: Deadpool 2

I was a huuuuge fan of the first Deadpool from two years ago. It was so unexpected, so fresh, so original…and just so *good*. So, could this sequel live up to that? Even after losing its director due to creative differences…? Yes and no.

THE BLURB:

Wisecracking mercenary Deadpool joins forces with three mutants — Bedlam, Shatterstar and Domino — to protect a boy from the all-powerful Cable.

WHAT WORKED:

The movie. On that fundamental “did I just watch what they promised?” level, yes, this mov...

Day 1,663: Short Memory

Professional athletes have short memories. So much of their work involves failure, they have to be able to let go of what has happened, and move forward. As writers (or any other kind of artist, really), we need to have short memories, too. Beating ourselves up over failure doesn’t help us, it only holds us back. We have to process that failure, feel it instead of run from it, and then let it go and keep moving forward.

I was able to do that today. The last two days were frustrating. I didn’t...

Day 1,661: Happiness

Happiness isn’t what a lot of us think it is.

A lot of us think that happiness is that feeling that comes when we eat incredible food, or right after we finish a really hard project and it turned out better than we hoped, or when we get to sleep in an extra half hour. I include myself in that “us,” by the way, especially when I’m not paying attention.

But, that’s not happiness. That’s actually an endorphin rush, pumping into our brain. That’s euphoria. It’s an experience. It’s an emotion.

Hap...

Day 1,660: Dramaz

Ugh. Drama fo yo mama.

We’re watching another building this week, and there were shenanigans over there that had to be attended to. Mussed up our evening! Luckily, I’d done alllllmost everything I needed to do today already. I wrote 2,000 words and only missed my last sprint of 1,000 words because of the aforementioned shenanigans. Otherwise, I’d have had 3,000.

I worked out. That was brutal today. So sore.

A’s won.

Hmmm…doggos are adorable…that was about my day, yo.

More fun tomorrow
