Offering $$ for referrals? Might want to think again.

I received an email recently from a company offering to pay up to $500 for qualified referrals.

Frankly, I think this is a bad idea for several reasons.

Watch this week’s UNCOPYABLE Business video and see why I say that!

Nebraska’s Brutally Honest Tourism Campaign

Everybody knows Las Vegas’s tourism campaign clearly aims at people who might want to be a little naughty.

Now welcome another tourism campaign that unmistakably identifies it’s moose, but takes a different twist from Vegas. Instead of reaching out to its moose, Nebraska has taken the controversial opposite approach and calls out people who are NOT their target market.

For years, Nebraska has been the least likely state for people to visit. According to a 2012 industry survey, less than a third of people were familiar with Nebraska as a destination. Ad awareness was at 4%. That’s all turned around now.

Watch Steve and his smokin’ hot wife, Kay, discuss why the Nebraska campaign is such a great learning opportunity for businesses in all industries.

If You Know It, Teach It

We all learn a LOT of useful and interesting lessons over our years, both in business and in life.

Besides teaching me many such lessons, a very important mentor of mine regularly reminded me to also share with others.

In a way, that’s what content marketing really does. It shares useful and interesting information with our moose, thus helping in a non-threatening way to establish a relationship. And, of course, while we’re doing that, we can begin connecting with them as a possible supplier.

Instead of pumping out “content” that’s all about your company and products, look at the long list of useful and interesting lessons that are now a part of how you think and how you behave. Share those.

You might find that’s the best content marketing you can do.

The Greatest Mistake Marketers & Salespeople Make is Trying to…

Here is a very simplified description of the difference between sales and marketing. Sales is the act of finding people who are ready to buy right now. Marketing is the act of uncovering people who eventually will be ready to buy.

Like I said very simplified. It might have been truer 20+ years ago, pre-Internet, but I think we’re seeing more morphing between the two. Regardless, marketers and salespeople still tend to make mistakes today because of heuristics built up long ago. What may have been accepted philosophy and practice way back when may not work today. And vice versa.

The vice versa is what I’m discussing this week’s UNCOPYABLE Business video. Find out what past mistake I’m referring to and ask yourself whether your company is getting it right today.

Making Bad Election Marketing Better

It’s that time of year again when local, state, and national elections are upon us.

Not many people enjoy the barrage of campaign messages littering the airwaves, social media, our street corners, and lawns. Even fewer of us would ever imagine WANTING these to hit our mailbox or inbox.

But if you’re a marketer, one of the best things you can do is create a swipe file of marketing examples you can use for idea starters in the future. Another is to look at how YOU might improve the results for these politicians, especially since the vast majority of messages and media look exactly alike!

This week I’ve got a couple of examples of campaign marketing pieces I received. Listen to my analysis of what I would do to make them a lot more effective!

Tide Pods, But With Scotch? I’ll take that challenge!

You remember the Tide Pod Challenge, where an amazing number of idiots ate Tide Pods on a dare and promptly became very ill.

For one week at this year’s London Cocktail Week, the fine folks at Glenlivet Scotch Whisky have introduced their own version of the Tide Pod…a much better version IMNSHO…Glenlivet Capsules! Yes, you can toss a couple of capsules in your purse or pocket and later on when the mood strikes, pop one in your mouth, take a bite and enjoy one of the world’s best scotch whiskys wherever you are!

True to weekly form, Kelly’s Dad and Marketing Gunslinger, Steve Miller, finds a usable marketing and branding lesson we can all adapt in our own businesses.

Stop Managing Time – This is Way Better

My computer was on the fritz this morning, which is very annoying. I’m not being productive!

I hate that, but it does give me a good topic for this week.

Productivity is the name of the game of success. When you are doing things that positively IMPACT for progress towards an important goal, you are being productive.

The enemy of productivity is distraction. When we are distracted, we are unproductive.

To be sure, we can’t control all distractions, but there are quite a few that we can. Watch this week’s UNCOPYABLE Business video and learn what those distractions are and what we can do to minimize their damage.

Being Misled by Gwyneth Paltrow and a Running Bull?

GET MY 25 STOLEN MARKETING & BRANDING TIPS!

===========================

Are you following rules of competition written by someone else? You might not think so, but you probably are. If you don’t break away from that trap you will be following them forever.

The thing to recognize is most “rules of competition” have, in fact, been written by someone else. Usually, they’re first movers who establish new markets. For example, who said our cars had to run on gasoline for so many years? Technology had to be developed for the combustion engine, just like it had to be developed for electric cars. But the first movers established rules early.

It’s not unusual for some rules to go unquestioned, because think they are like rules of Nature. They just are and so we follow them.

But then there are people, like Gwyneth Paltrow, who simply pay no attention to rules, or running bulls who don’t even know there are rules. What can we learn from them?

Watch this week’s UNCOPYABLE Business video and ask yourself, “Am I following unwritten rules? Is there a way for us to break them or even create new ones that will shift the advantage to our company?”
