It’s impossible to know how someone really feels…
We’ve all heard the phrase “walk in their shoes.” It’s common advice to businesses. “Walk in your customer’s shoes and you’ll know how to sell them!”
And many companies say that’s what they do, which is mostly B.S…because it’s almost impossible. It’s almost impossible to fully understand how someone thinks and feels.
The problem is heuristics. We all suffer from it.
Especially right now.
Don’t get me wrong. Heuristics is absolutely critical to our survival, but it’s a double-edged sword. Heuristics colors everybody’s worldview and perspective (including mine), which can cause massive divides, like what’s happening now.
This week I talk about the major issues we’re facing in the world right now and why understanding how our heuristics can help or hurt the situation. Yes, it’s a business lesson, but it’s a bigger human question.
Civil discourse is welcome. Anything else is NOT.

Nobody knows what to do right now, so here’s what to do
There are a LOT of “experts” out there pontificating on what businesses should do as we come out of the crisis.
The problem is none of them have ANY idea what businesses should do.
Nobody knows! We’ve never been through anything like this, so the best we can do is GUESS.
I’m not going to tell you I know what to do, because I don’t. My crystal ball is just as cloudy as yours.
However, being the contrarian I am, I decided to change the question. “What should we do?” is the wrong question. The question we should be asking is, “What should we NOT do when we come out of this unprecedented situation?”

Marketing BC vs. Marketing AC
I think it’s pretty safe to say that from a sales and marketing perspective things will be different as we come out on the other side of the pandemic.
But who knows what that exactly means? My crystal ball is as cloudy as anyone’s. I mean who would have guessed a short time ago that “cleanliness” would be an expectation for almost every business?
I do, however, feel this does give us all an opportunity to pivot our marketing, messaging, and maybe even our deliverables. If we think the old criteria we used to communicate with prospects and customers will still work, I’m pretty sure we’d be wrong.

If the Doobie Brothers can do it…
Governors are starting to relax the rules for managing the spread of coronavirus. We’re still a long way from “normal,” whatever that will mean.
While there have been many corporate casualties, I’m sure you’ve noticed how many businesses have pivoted during the crisis to stay open and survive. 5-star restaurants became full-blown takeout and delivery meal services. A pinball parlor in Portland rented their machines out and delivered, because their location is closed. Big conferences and meetings have gone 100% online.
And we’re all getting really good at Zoom!
But as we come out, my question is, “what have you learned or developed that you can take along that can separate you from the competition?”
