A Restless Heart

(Chapter 5)

Chapter 6

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

Having only known Asher for only a short while, Tyler didn’t think it was right that he could already sense the discomfort and awkwardness in the way Asher held himself after his question. In truth, Asher, Steve, and Rose were about the only people Tyler regularly saw face to face, so perhaps it wasn’t all that surprising, but still. It was alarming to see the way Asher shifted, glancing anywhere but at him, until he finally looked up...

Monsters In The Dark

It’s cold in here.

What used to be walls and represent safety is now a grey mass of rubble that allows multiple shards of moonlight through to cast shadows on the dusty floor, offering no protection at all against the chill of the evening air, or whatever the night terrors will bring.

He squats in a curled position rocking slowly back and forth on his heels, the thumb of his left hand shriveling away in the depths of his mouth as his right hand draws the same mindless patterns over and over...

You’ll Know

When you look around at the world and still can’t see how you fit, you’ll know.
When the perfect, cloudless blue sky above you presses ominously and halts your breath, you’ll know.
When the crowds around you roar in exclusion that you somehow feel is all your own doing, you’ll know.
When every passing glance feels threatening or full of mockery, you’ll know.
You’ll know, because everything will seem without sense.
You’ll know, because every step is without pace.
You’ll know, because each moment...

From Coffee Shop Corners

Blurb

People watching might be George’s favourite way to spend his time. Why wouldn’t he lose himself in dreaming up the loves and lives of other people to escape the mess that is his own? From this new favourite cafe corner, in the new town he’s made his home, George makes up backstories for each of the baristas. And as they serve coffee, George imagines happily ever afters for their waiting customers. But when a surprise email forces him to relive the heartache he’s running from, George...

Chaos made tranquil

If I Were

If I were brave, I would reach for you when my world was crumbling.
You’d smile, bringing stillness whilst my heart fluttered heart away.
But now the only thing you see me do is stumbling
Over the words and gestures that spell out just one word: stay.

If I were whole, I wouldn’t look at you only in yearning.
I’d reach out and dare to touch, to taste, to see
If that look in your eyes means you want something more,
Beyond the belief you need to protect me.

If I were good, I’d never have a taste...

A Wednesday Evening

Simon sinks down beside Cameron on the sofa as he’s done so many other Wednesday evenings, snatching up a handful of the immediately-offered crisps the moment he’s seated, and like Cameron doesn’t move his eyes from the TV. This is their favourite show; in fact, it’s what got them talking in the first place back when he’d first started working at the car services two years ago. Him in his pristine suit for his role as administrator sticking out like a sore thumb amongst all the casual jeans...

Caesura

I heard a song today that sang memories of you,
And my hand paused, hesitant, ready to bat it away
Like some irritant, persistent fly,
Unwilling to have the invasion of all that’s become true
And replay the words you’ll never say,
Memorise the hollowness, rehearse the why.

But I paused, listened for several bars
And considered how I’ve let you invade every colony of my world
Like we’re playing a crushing game of Risk.
I sit, wondering where you are,
Laying in the inbetween of night, curled
...

A Restless Heart

(Chapter 4)

Chapter 5

When he came around, Tyler sat in the hallway outside his bedroom for a few minutes, trying to get some strength back into his legs. In a daze, he crawled his way back into the bedroom, fighting the urge to just tumble on to the bed and sleep. His head and jaw hurt far too much for him to ignore it like the last time. Though Tyler barely had the strength in his arms to haul himself up on the bed.

Tyler’s guest also seemed to have exhausted themselves, because the air...
