(Chapter 10)

Chapter 11

Is Steve okay?

Tyler watched Asher checking his phone for the third time since hed arrived at his apartment, taking in the slight frown on his face and feeling second-hand concern. Asher had called to say he would be delayed because Steve had been taken ill at work, though had given no details about it.

Hes fine, Asher agreed with a pinched smile for him. He gets these migraines sometimes. Stress ones, when hes an idiot and takes on too much.

Is it work?

Uh Asher...

Hiding

Your life is a play on words, a poorly-formed pun and a cliché.
Dancing behind synonyms and metaphors, you wear your vocabulary like chain-mail.
Heavy, rusting, weighing you down. And in your wisdom, throwing the key away
Seemed the only option. Dont let them in. They cannot know. Not that the only thing you ever fear is to fail.
Instead. Guard your borders. Electrocute that high wire fence,
Install blackout curtains and close and lock the gates behind that thick, sturdy wall built over the...

Whatever Comes First

[image error] Blurb

Matthew isnt looking for a relationship. Ask him, and hell say its because between work and studying theres just no time. Ask his best friend, Sarah, and the story is a little different and involves a failed relationship that left him raw.

Enter Joel, a childhood friend of Sarahs recently back in the area. Hes not looking for love, either, but hes not averse to the idea of a little fun. Uncomplicated and on the same page: what could possibly go wrong?

The Bridge

The bridge is falling down.
Bowing under the pressure of a million false promises and a thousand empty words.

Words are repetitive.
There are only so many ways to say
I love you. I want you in my life.
And for those heading doggedly towards man and wife
Or any such variation
There is the padlock.

Promises are passing moments,
Said only to raise smiles, halt tears,
And before you know it is the passing of too many years,
Wondering, how did I end up here?
There is the key.

Padlock our words...

Always

Shot time, she heard and smiled as she watched his hands appear slowly either side of her waist, a glass of sorts in each. She felt him press against her and leaned back in familiar reassurance whilst grinning up at the man before her; his eyes met hers with mild amusement as he shook his head lightly, reached down to kiss her softly on the cheek, and walked away.

Yes. Shot time, she agreed, laughing, turning slightly in his half-embrace and accepting the offered drink. What is it? she...

Out Welcome

What happened to the way we used to be?
Talking about anything, or nothing,
Or everything. But there was always something
For us to say.

Now, its just empty space and hesitancy.
Like weve both learned other tongues
To converse in. The important things the ones
That get lost in translation along the way.

It feels like you no longer want to know me,
But you cant find the words to admit
That whatever we had was gone, and this is it,
All that remains of yesterday.

And I know, I shouldnt have such...

(Chapter 9)

Chapter 10

So, tell me about this Xavier.

Tyler paused from where hed been reaching for his coffee, looking back to find Erin staring back at him through the screen with a knowing smile. He did his best to keep his face neutral, dismissing her question with a disinterested wave.

Who?

Xavier, Erin repeated, smiling harder, you know. The guy youve mentioned in every single conversation weve had in the past few weeks. The one who, clearly, has got your attention, and who you seem...

A Pit Stop

Are you embarrassed by me, Grant?

Joshs voice is quiet; that low, growling pitch that, depending on the circumstance, either has Grant pleased hes rarely on Joshs bad side, or falling to his knees in reverent worship the way only he gets to worship Josh.

What? Course not, Grant replies quickly, wondering where Josh is going with this, and also what hes done wrong. Hes been so tense about taking Josh home to meet his family, that hes spent the week leading up to it overthinking every step,...

Deception

It was a golden afternoon, with pleasant time to kill.
She planted a diversion in fear of her secrets spilled.
Belated realisation dawned, so big, star bright, and bold:
She says more than she means to with the words she leaves untold.
Transparency through double-talk, her methods to deceive,
Rejection terrifies and leaves her nothing to achieve.
So what she said, it once was true, in that there was no lie,
But that was then, and this is now; to that she said goodbye.
Bear with her while she fools...
