Bared And Armored

This facade he wears is not something thrown together one evening on a whim; it’s a wall he’s been perfecting ever since he discovered the power of hiding behind a mask as a teen. Mirror-rehearsed quirked brows and confident smiles when he’s feeling anything but, above layer upon layer of beautiful armor, adorned with kohl-lined eyes and glitter-tipped nails. Drawing eyes wherever he turns, with so few really seeing him.

Some days, when the sun is shining and all he sees around him is good...

#writephoto – A Rambling Overthinker

[image error]For the #writephoto prompt bySue Vincent

To wade across, or to chance the slippery looking rocks placed there by some ancestral hand. That water couldn’t be that deep, surely; Eric watched a twig fall from an overhanging tree branch drift by where he stood, convinced that by monitoring its progress he could see into the murky water below. Though what if he was wrong? What if the water wasn’t ankle-deep, and stepping down from the uneven bank into the stream instead revealed it came up to a...

Wisdom

Where did you pick up that skill?
Loving the sound of your own voice?
Was it something instilled on you from birth
Or a character trait selected by choice?

I hear you now. Shouting down the room
Because only you have things to say,
Good things, words of value, knowledge
And wisdom. Your way is the only way.

But if that mouse in the corner
Would squeak loud enough to be heard
For one minute, maybe, just maybe
Common sense could be revered.

I’d rather hear his words,
And the timbre of his voice...

Out Of Time

Unfurl your hands.
There’s blood on them, isn’t there?
I know that it’s mine.
That’s my pumping, beating heart you’ve got there,
And I’m running out of time.

Loosen your grip.
You’re trying to hold me here, aren’t you?
Yet you don’t want to be seen to be mine.
That’s my self-belief you’ve got clutched to you,
And I’m running out of time.

Let me fall from your fingers.
It was always the plan to keep me hanging on, wasn’t it?
Until you found something better, more refined.
That’s my self-worth, and you’ve...

A Restless Heart

(Chapter 2)

Chapter 3

Let’s meet for that beer.

Tyler glared at the message typed out on his phone, the casual words not revealing how many attempts it had taken him to write them. He cursed his imagination, and Asher for feeding it. Then himself once more when he realized just how much time he’d wasted typing that single line.

When Tyler had seen Asher’s website, he’d tossed the card hard into the trash, determined to forget about it and Asher altogether. But the site was still there when...

Limbo

I don’t want you to go.
Can’t bring myself to stay.
You ask that I hold on and yet
It always ends this way.
We pretend we don’t know,
Or have the words to say.
We both want the same things and yet
We’ll never have our day.

From Coffee Shop Corners

Blurb

People watching might be George’s favourite way to spend his time. Why wouldn’t he lose himself in dreaming up the loves and lives of other people to escape the mess that is his own? From this new favourite cafe corner, in the new town he’s made his home, George makes up backstories for each of the baristas. And as they serve coffee, George imagines happily ever afters for their waiting customers. But when a surprise email forces him to relive the heartache he’s running from, George can...

Bull

Anchored to a very large, angry bull,
Flaring its nostrils at me indignantly,
As if I am the matador –
That was never me…

Exact

In a perfect universe, we would all have the courage to say the exact words we needed to say to the people that needed to hear them at exactly the right moment. There would be no doubts, and no misunderstandings, and everything would go precisely and exactly to plan.

The universe is not like that.

Words never come out right, getting jumbled up in the maze that is our insecurities and overactive imaginations. Feelings are never easily revealed, instead repressed safe inside our chests, for...
