Always

“Shot time,” she heard and smiled as she watched his hands appear slowly either side of her waist, a glass of sorts in each. She felt him press against her and leaned back in familiar reassurance whilst grinning up at the man before her; his eyes met hers with mild amusement as he shook his head lightly, reached down to kiss her softly on the cheek, and walked away.

“Yes. Shot time,” she agreed, laughing, turning slightly in his half-embrace and accepting the offered drink.”What is it?” she...

Behind The Scenes: The Military Wife

The Military Wife was scribbled, in my terrible handwriting, outside a café in Spain on an overcast day. I had the video of Green Day’s Wake Me Up When September Ends in my head, and it was approaching Remembrance Sunday. This story was the result of that.

In hindsight, perhaps a better title would have been A Military Spouse to more fairly represent those left behind when our armed forces go off to war or to keep the peace. But then I would have felt the need to change the main character, an...

As Nature Intended

When you first learn that you are an Omega, you learn all sorts of things you never imagined you would need to know when you were growing up. The essentials: Heat suppressants, scent masking, how to handle an Alpha that is scenting you, and of course, the laws that are in place to protect you, in a society that is accepting and progressive, yet still has elements of its attitudes stuck firmly in the past. You also learn that through no fault of your own, or conscious effort, it is possible f...

Sunday Thinking

Once upon a time, it was possible to spend an entire day without reaching for technology of some sort. Once upon a time, I could sit, perfectly happy with just a book or a pen and notebook in my hand, instead of my fingers twitching irritably like they do now, if the battery was getting low on my tablet, phone or laptop.

Once upon a time, I wouldn’t care what product I was using; any map, any search engine, any email provider. But I was enticed in; first with the simplicity of finding things...

Behind The Scenes: Dormant

Dormant comes of spending a night in an unfamiliar spare room and having a far too active imagination about the shadows the moon was casting in there. You can choose to think of the monster under the bed as an actual monster, or those middle-of-the-night terrors you get when remembering all the things you spent your day pretending to forget. Totally up to you, but I suspect for me it was more likely the latter when I wrote this.

Have a read of Dormant and see if it stirs your own monsters (or...

Behind The Scenes: Smile

I had a brief period where I was a little fascinated with drabbles. I love the idea of being able to tell an entire story in just 100 words, and this was one of my many attempts at doing just that. Borne of the thought, does someone who comes across as the villain in the story recognise that they are a villain? Do they feel themselves victim? Or are they happy with their label of being bad?

Give yourself a smile (possibly) and take a look!

Behind The Scenes: Monsters In The Dark

When the situation in Syria first erupted, there was a news story that showed the devastation following an attack that left so many dead, and so many others wandering aimlessly around their former homes with nothing but a look of shock on their faces. One camera zoomed in on a small boy, covered in dirt, crouched down and stirring a finger in the dust on the street, and it felt like a kick in the stomach. Whatever the outcome, whatever the current situation we are experiencing throughout the...

Sunday Thinking

Once upon a time, there was a country, a beautiful, prospective country that, given its history, should have been a pinnacle of hope – or at the very least, an example of what persecution leads to – for the rest of the world.

This country, full of bright, intelligent people who were kind, generous, and so full of promise, had an incredible cuisine, a landscape that was stunning, and an opportunity to be a leader of those smaller countries around it. It could have provided hope for others whos...

Tainted By Our Choices

Tarred by our choices is a contemporary romance that has flashbacks, sex, environmental awareness, and a slight fixation on dessert. Potentially all at the same time.

Meet Jack. A successful environmental officer working within an industry that is so very far from his childhood dream of saving the planet, that he no longer recognizes himself. How he’s found himself in Houston, Texas, where he has no one, and nothing but his work for company, he tells himself repeatedly he doesn’t know. But w...

Behind The Scenes: Dream Life

This story came to be because of two things. One, an ER episode where a patient had created an entire new life for herself in her subconscious, and if I remember correctly was in a coma (it’s been a while since I’ve seen the episode, but I am/was a huge fan), and two, reading some articles on maladaptive dreaming, which are interesting and bordering on hitting too close to home.

But I digress.

What if you could create the perfect world for you in your own head? The perfect you, the perfect pa...
