Weekdays and Polygons

Sometimes it takes reaching rock bottom to learn who we are, who we want to be, and who we need in our lives. With a new found family, and a new sense of purpose, maybe it’s okay to learn to trust again.
A collection of poems through self discovery, acceptance, inner strength, and learning what it is to love.

Oblivious

“Have dinner with me tonight, Seth?” Ryan’s voice was hesitant even to his own ear, betraying the nervousness in the simplicity of his question. The clink of the mug of coffee against the table seemed unfairly loud when he put it down, leaving him wondering how he could even hear it over the blood rushing in his own ears.
Seth nodded without looking up, continuing to turn the pages of the heavy book laid out on the table at the same steady pace he had been doing for the past hour, curling his...

Book Learning
The bricks of your foundation don’t make us any less intelligent
By keeping us out
We didn’t sit for hours on hard back chairs
In faded halls full of stuffy air and pomposity
Bored by monotone tones only good for lulling to sleep
Our knowledge is gathered from multiple sources,
Absorbed by lamplight poring over pages in small hours
Bookmarked and summarised from websites
Of amateur enthusiasts who
Unlike you
Enjoy sharing their wisdom,
Expecting little in return
We gathered samples and snapshots in fields a...

Soy Boy
Where do you get your protein, boy?
Sure isn’t from all that soy you eat.
Sure isn’t from all the words you spew so full of vitriol.
A whole cow wouldn’t nourish you,
Someone so lacking in substance.
Is it rods of self-importance that keep that back so straight?
Because you sure don’t have a spine.
Imagine
A whole world listening to your rhetoric
A whole world gaslit and guilt-tripped by your flawlessness.
Must be hard to shoulder all that arrogance
Carrying it off as strength, and good.
And yet
People flock...

Foothold

I need a foothold
A real one
Not the one I’m stood teetering on that could
Crumble beneath my toes at any moment
Giving way so
Jagged angles can gouge caverns in my skin
As I slip to the canyon many miles below
Just one foothold
Please?
My upper body strength is weak
But you can be sure
If one solid step was in sight
One certain place to cling to
Then I would haul myself up
And be stronger
Than I ever was before
Only a foothold
Between the boulder and the rock face...

Pumpkin
The best place to hide in her grandmother’s garden was between the long strings of beans and the pumpkin patch. Josie was just the right height to peer over the pumpkins, clutching on to one as she stretched up on tippy toes. It was a good hidey spot if she hadn’t finished playing for the day, and where she could watch the neighbour pegging out clothes. She liked Mrs. Hibbard; she always looked like she was dressed for a special occasion, even when hanging out washing. Today she wore a long red...

Price
What price are we willing to pay for ignoring all the damage we’re doing? What value do we place on the quality of our lives? This world isn’t infinite. Using all these resources to build a better world? When the resources are all gone, what do we reach for then? We taint our oceans, and pollute our skies, ignoring evidence and modeling systems predicting the storm that is coming. All to achieve our demands; we’ll have it all. A few will, anyway. Not those of us without power. Who will pick up t...
