Community Over Competition with Bonnie Kuhl

As a creative business owner, it’s oh so important to develop a community of support to keep you going. On today’s episode, I am joined by Bonnie Kuhl, founder of Archer and Olive, a paper goods studio that she created after realizing the therapeutic benefits of journaling. We talk about the importance of community over competition and supporting other people in business. She shares how she set up a sourcing process, her experience with using a fulfillment center and how she knew it was time to hire a team. We discuss how being diagnosed with general anxiety disorder and bipolar disorder led her to journaling and her tips for sharing what you do with the world.
What’s in this episode:
How Bonnie got started in creating journals and notebooks
Recognizing a void in the market and deciding to go for it
The process of growing a team and when she realized she needed help
Bonnie’s advice for getting through overwhelm
Getting to the point where you need to pause and take a break to avoid burnout
Being diagnosed with general anxiety disorder and bipolar disorder
How Bonnie has used journaling and art to cope with anxiety
How she films her videos and the importance of working with what you have
Using a fulfillment center and when she knew she was ready to use one
The sourcing process she went through to create her products
Dealing with knock offs and copycats from other brands
Developing your community in business
Supporting other creatives and cheering other people on
Why Bonnie has decided to do collaborations with other creatives
Working with Amy to create a 2020 planner and sticker pack
Filling up empty spaces while allowing for white space in your journal
Why it’s so hard to be vulnerable and open up online
Being a new mom and navigating motherhood
The power behind showing your messes in an authentic way
Bonnie’s tips for sharing what you do online
How Bonnie runs her e-commerce business
From Bonnie:
Journaling has radically changed the way I experience the world around me. My self-discovery journey started at university when I received a life-changing diagnosis. After learning I had bipolar disorder and general anxiety disorder, I struggled to navigate each transition while prioritizing my own mental health. The overwhelming pressure to have it “all figured out” followed me wherever I went. It wasn’t until a mentor introduced me to the power of journaling that I began to fully embrace life with my diagnosis. Paired with doctor-prescribed treatment, journaling helped me organize my thoughts, reduce my anxiety, and take control of my mental health. After experiencing my own transformation, I set out to share the empowering tool of journaling with as many people as possible through my paper goods studio, Archer & Olive. We design dot grid journals and daily agenda planners to help ambitious, purpose-driven people like you achieve your goals and exercise your creativity while giving you the tools to manage your mental health.

Let's Do Lunch

What’s better than the feeling of making the world a better place? The feeling of making the world a better place AND enjoying delicious food, stimulating conversation, and exchanging bright ideas. The season of giving is right around the corner and I wanted to share an opportunity to make some good happen in the world.

Recently, I had the chance to hand letter invitations to the Eat.Drink.Give. event supporting City Year Los Angeles– a non-profit dedicated to helping K-10 students all over the city. I loved creating an invitation that was formal but still included playful hand lettering and whimsical botanicals. It felt like a good balance between both worlds.
City Year means a lot to me and JC, who actually volunteered to be a part of it when he was just out of college. If you aren’t familiar, City Year sends young volunteers into struggling schools in order to help students who have difficulty with reading and math. The volunteers tutor, mentor, and encourage the students, building strong relationships, and improving test scores along the way. JC loved the experience when he did it and even though his corps member days are over, both of us have done our best to help out over the years and I wanted to give you a chance to join in.
While the event did help get a start raising money, the fun isn’t over yet! The dinner was a successful event but I just heard from City Year and there are even more opportunities to do some good!
City Year is excited to share that we have raised $180,000 of our $200,000 goal and there is still time to close the gap. Please click here to make a donation or bid in our exciting online auction here , items include a 5-night stay at the Ritz Carlton in Hawaii!
And while a 5-night stay in Hawaii sounds great, there’s another exciting ticket in the auction. If you haven’t already guessed from the title, I’m auctioning off a lunch with me. You can find a description of the lunch here at Charity Buzz. There are other (awesome) auction items in this online event as well. You can check them out and learn more about this wonderful organization here. If this sounds like something you’d like to do, don’t delay. Bidding ends November 13th! Hope to hear from you soon!

Podcast: Not Chasing Perfection with Adele Toomey

Life as a creator comes with its own set of challenges. Today I am chatting with my friend, Adele Toomey about all things scrapbooking and life as a YouTuber. We dive into how she got hooked on all things creative and how she manages her day to day as a wife, mom, creative and YouTuber (did I mention she runs not one, not two, but three different YouTube channels?). We chat about why she decided to create three different channels for her subscribers and how to figure out what content your viewers like best as a creator. She discusses what challenges she faces as a YouTuber including what she does when she hits a creative rut and how she overcomes mom guilt.
What’s in this episode:
What Adele did before she discovered scrapbooking
How Amy and Adele met
How she got hooked on all things creativity
Keeping up with scrapbooking and bulking her work
A typical day in Adele’s life as a creator, YouTuber and mom
Why Adele has three separate YouTube channels and how to figure out what your viewers like the best
How Adele stays inspired when she hits a creative block by looking at her supplies in a new way
The rollercoaster of feeling like you have too many ideas with not enough time vs. not enough ideas and hitting a creative rut
How her background as a teacher has helped her with her work
Dealing with mom guilt and how this affects your creative work
Adjustments that Adele will make to make her creative process flow easier
How to handle negative feedback on YouTube
Why Adele recommends having free content to go along with your paid content
About Adele:
My name is Adele and I am a paper-holic.
Yes, it may have taken years for me to admit it…but alas it is true. I am a primary school teacher by day (fourth year on Kindergarten this year) and often use the excuse “Oh, but I need it for work!” to justify my paper purchases. My husband has learned to “smile and nod” at my excitement over paper quality and adhesive possibilities…
I have been recording memories using art journals for many years but have embraced Project Life style scrapbooking for the last 2 years. I scrap weekly and use multiple inserts for each week due to the large amount of photos I take. I am almost finished my fourth PL volume for 2014 alone…eeek!
I love recording the simple moments in life, as well as the fun social times. As PL is my only means of photo-keeping, I tend to include as many important moments as possible through photos to remember life in years to come. I am an embellishing queen and cannot deem a layout complete without an embellishment cluster…or two…or three! I am also hoping to create an epic pocketed scrapbook style wedding album in the next few months.

NEW Traveler's Notebook Workshop!

When?
Saturday, November 9, 2019 from 11AM-12:30PM
Where? The Four Seasons Aviara | Seasons Restaurant
7210 Blue Heron Place, Carlsbad CA 92011

Why?
So, you’re going on that much-needed vacation and you want to dip your toe into documenting your travels. Of course, it can be very overwhelming to figure out how to make that work. How much do you bring with you? What should you bring? It’s a delicate balance to take just enough with you. It’s also a challenge to determine how much time you should spend experiencing a trip versus documenting it. Or maybe you’re back. Your wanderlust is filled to the brim (for now). You’ve unpacked and now your desk is stuffed with museum brochures, knick knacks, cute business cards and papers from your adventure. Not to mention your phone is full of photos that are wanting to be printed. Have you been looking for a fun way to document your life without the bulk of a traditional scrapbook?
What?Look no further! I’ll be teaching a class on how I use Traveler's Notebooks to preserve my memories, whether I am traveling abroad or staying home with my family. This class will focus on how to incorporate memorabilia, how to use different pens to create eye-catching journaling, how to create cohesive spreads, and many others! The gorgeous kit is full of goodness that you’ll use in fun and fresh ways. You’ll learn some fun techniques and create some one-of-a-kind mini-masterpieces by combining your photos with products from my collections with American Crafts and more. I’ll also demonstrate simple methods that look complex and help you see the supplies in a fresh new light, even for on-the-go.

Everything Was Awesome! Jack's 6th Birthday Celebration

Everything was awesome! Jack’s 6th birthday party featured LEGOs, robotics, good food, family and friends, and custom crayon creations to top it all off. The best part of the day was seeing Jack and his friends get creative with LEGO robotics. While it took a lot of time and effort to pull the whole thing together, I did want to try and keep it as simple as possible. It took a lot of help from friends and family and was a wonderful celebration in our home. I wanted to go ahead and share my top takeaways from planning the event in case you have your own little person who’s growing up way too fast. It didn’t seem like too long ago when we were celebrating Jack’s 5th birthday!

Per usual I commissioned A Pretty Little Party to do the invitation. Natalie always nails it and one of these days I will print it out for his scrapbook.

The Theme
Jack absolutely loves everything and anything to do with LEGO - Legoland, LEGO Movie 2, etc, so the theme came together very quickly. Custom LEGO figures made from recycled crayons by Art 2 the Extreme in his favorite color – teal – along with a metallic blue balloon and a blue, green and yellow balloon garland provided the vibrant color backdrop for the party.

The Food
When it comes to creativity in the Kitchen, my mom is a master. She spent four hours whipping up homemade egg rolls, potstickers, and fried rice. I commissioned one of the moms from Jack’s last school to make the incredible rainbow LEGO shaped JELLO cake and tasted incredible.

The Fun
While the adults chatted and caught up with each other, the kids had the time of their lives assembling awesome LEGO creations.

The key for pulling something like this off is to assemble a team of amazing experts who can help execute the party of your kids’ wildest dreams.
Art2theExtreme (crayon creations)
Rockets of Awesome (matching T-shirts; use code AMY25 for 25% off your first order)
Ooly (mini highlighters, cactus erasers, and other cute stuff)
Paper Afternoon (custom rubber stamps)
Lula Flora Designs (LEGO piñatas)
Invitation by A Pretty Little Party

In today’s world, so many people crave having real connections. With so much taking place online, and more and more people eating dinner in front of their favorite Netflix show, it comes as no surprise that people are feeling isolated and lonely. She shares how she developed this idea for creating a dinner party company and why she’s always followed her heart. She discusses the power of words and speaking things into existence and the importance of taking time to pause, reflect and write things down. We also chat about how the Enneagram can help you to understand yourself and others.

Kara Elise is a chef, experience curator, and the ultimate hostess. She focuses on creating spaces and experiences that cultivate community. Kara's expertise in hosting, recipe creation, and food styling establish a culture of invitation through holistically designed, welcoming environments. She is intuitive, warm, and disarming. A genuine hostess encouraging us to live fully.
In a culture obsessed with technology, being busy, and overstimulation, slowness is one of our most difficult disciplines. Kara believes that creating intentional time to sit with others is an essential practice. A moment to feed our bodies and fill our deepest human desire - to be seen and known.
While fostering relationships in Los Angeles, Kara has garnered a network of influential guests, clients, and brand partners. Her dinner party movement has successfully traveled between the West Coast and London and continues to grow internationally - drawing in socially savvy, mindful foodies along the way for dinners, retreats, and events. Kara also collaborates with a variety of brands, turning their consumers into a community of thriving relationships.
Kara recently launched her YouTube channel empowering freedom in the kitchen and teaching how to eat both mindfully and beautifully. Her first cookbook, Toast, was released in September 2017.
