GenCon Part 3
GenCon Part 3
Saturday started with a business meeting which went very well. After that I was supposed to meet up with yet another old friend, former TSR (and now freelance) editor Ray Vallese, but he didn't make it to the show due to illness. So I wandered around the exhibit hall and ran into Sean Reynolds again. He proceeded to embarrass me at multiple booths by saying things like, "will you give this for free to 3rd edition D&D codesigner Monte Cook?" I'm hard to embarrass, but making me seem

GenCon Part 2
Friday smacked me across the face and got me out of bed. I haven't been sleeping well lately and I traditionally sleep terribly in hotels, so GenCon was doing me no favors in that regard.
After more wandering in the exhibit hall, I ran into my old friend Charles Ryan and he joined Sean Reynolds and I for lunch. Soon thereafter, it was time to get ready for my seminar.
Designing Dungeons was a seminar that I gave at both PaizoCon and Origins. It was basically the same thing, except I

GenCon Part 1
GenCon Part 1
On Wednesday, the journey began. My friend Stan! was visiting, and so the two of us drove to GenCon together. Due to various reasons, the 5-6 hour trip took us about 7 hours, so we got there much later than we thought. Plus, the time zone change robbed us of an hour. Which meant that rather than going out with old friends for a light dinner as I had planned, I had to run to my first game.

What Else?
What Else?
At GenCon this year, I'll be checking out what's new from Reaper and Dwarven Forge, as well as Miniatures Building Authority, miniatures from Privateer Press, and whatever Fantasy Flight's got going on. I'm interested in getting a look at FantasyCraft. I'll be looking to acquire a copy of AEG's Ultimate Toolbox, Pagan Publishing's Mysteries of MesoAmerica, and hopefully tracking down a copy of Exodus from Glutton Creeper Games, although I have no confirmation that any of that will actu

Why, Yes. I Will Be At GenCon
Why, Yes. I Will Be At GenCon
I'm going to GenCon, and I'll be there from Wednesday to Sunday. Mostly I'll be playing games and hanging out with friends I don't get to see too often, but on a more "official" level, my schedule looks more like this:
Friday, 3-5 PM: Designing Dungeons with Monte Cook
Friday 7-9 PM: Attending the ENnie Awards
Saturday 3-6 PM: Judging the GenCon costume contest
Saturday 8-? PM: Dinner with the guys from my messageboards
If you're looking for my stuff at GenCon, you can fi

The Local Gang Problem
The Local Gang Problem
My neighborhood has a gang that roves around, apparently with little to do, simply looking for trouble. There's about six of them, and it's clear that in such numbers they gain a surprising boldness.
It's not uncommon that I'll go into my back yard and they'll be back there, just kind of hanging around. They'll just stare at me, defiantly. They're not really afraid of me, and often the boldest of them will just come right up to me, invading what I consider my personal space

Kobold Quarterly #10

Last week, I got my copy of KQ #10, and this extra-big GenCon issue is really great. Lots of great authors, including Jeff Grubb, John Wick, Ed Greenwood, and more. You've really got to check it out.

Long Weekend
Long Weekend
Last weekend, Sue and I went with friends up to Door County, Wisconsin to celebrate Sue's birthday as well as those of our friends Matt and Sarah. They all turned 40 this year.
Door County is a touristy area, but not a waterslides, billboards, and McDonalds touristy area. Rather a quaint shops and B&Bs touristy area. The lesser of two evils, in other words. Door County gets its name from "Death's Door" because to sailors on Lake Michigan, the area was hazardous sailing. Not surprising

Looking for Old Gamers
...like me. For a project I'm working on, I need to interview a few folks who, like me, started with the original three D&D booklets in the 1970s and didn't have access to the designer(s). That means not the Lake Geneva crew (sorry, Skip), or anyone from Dave's group or their extended spheres of influence.
