I am currently watching the Downton Abby series for the third time.
I started last week, and I am into season two right now.
It is one of those shows that you can count on to entertain, with intrigue, drama and suspense.
But the main reason I am watching it instead of some new series is that I trust it.
The risk of watching a new series is that it won’t be good, and it will waste my time. In my opinion, there has been a large drop off in good writing the last few years or so.
I am not entirely sure why.
Whether it be too many different shows being created on so many platforms and not enough writers, or the shows having some hidden political agenda focus over story.
Regardless, for me, I want to spend the few minutes I relax each evening after the kids are in bed viewing something I know is worth my time and won’t stress me out.
DOWNTON ABBEY IS A KNOWN QUANTITY FOR ME.
I know I love it.
It is entertaining with lots of drama, but won’t stress my out (aside from that Abbey footman Thomas, he always pisses me off).
Not so long ago I received an email from someone on my list.
She was referring to a promotion I had sent out.
She said something to the effect of,
_Ray, we love your emails but we don’t want to buy other peoples’ products, we want to buy yours. _
IT WAS THEN I REALIZED THAT I WAS A KNOWN QUANTITY FOR HER, AND OTHERS LIKE HER.
And as I thought about it, I behave the same way.
Once I find someone I trust, I would prefer to learn as much as I can from that person if possible.

🧱Should Authors go to Lego Camp?

This morning we were having a discussion about Lego Camp.
My son (and daughter too) are both raving lego fans.
Specifically, Star Wars Lego kits.
My son will ask to do work around the house in order to purchase small kits (which he builds and collects). I love this.
This morning my wife told me about a “Star Wars” Lego camp this summer.
My son loves the idea, but not the distance to get to the camp (the drive time for everything is a concern of his).
I could tell he was making excuses not to go, solely based on the drive (and not the content of the camp, which is right up his alley).
He mentioned that he was “already pretty good at building”, among other reasons.
So I jumped in and said,_ _
_”ON_e of the best ways to learn faster is to be exposed to other peoples ideas.”
He attended a similar lego building camp 3 or 4 years ago, and his skill, confidence and creativity exploded.
Sure he would have achieved those things eventually, but that last camp noticeably accelerated them.
Being exposed to how others might do things is such a huge benefit.
At this point, I think he will probably go (the drive is not really that long either).
But the conversation itself made me think about being an author, and what to do after you write that book.

🍔 What McDonalds can teach you about your book sales

You might not know this
Hi Blog,
I remember watching an interview with a McDonald’s franchise owner on TV (back when I use to watch regular TV).
He told the reporter the number of hamburgers he had sold that month, and it was a big number.
The reporter responder, _”That is great! You must be very happy.”_
The owner, said, _”No, we don’t make money on hamburgers. We make money on soda. We need to sell more sodas!”_
He went on to share some interesting statistics.
He shared that he might make only 1 or 2¢ profit on any hamburger sale, but up to 60 – 70¢ on soda sales.
That is a substantial difference.
When we think of McDonalds, we primarily think of hamburgers (and maybe fries and shakes).
When McDonalds advertises sales, they almost always discount their hamburgers or meal deals (even though those hamburgers have the smallest profit margins).
Why is that?
That is because hamburgers are the lead magnet. They (and sales on them) bring in the customers.
The profits are made on the other stuff: sodas, pies, etc.
THE HAMBURGER IS WHAT YOU WOULD CALL A SELF-LIQUIDATING OFFER.
The business just hopes to break even on that, and make the profit on the extra stuff.
That is why they always ask:
_Do you want fries with that? _
_Do you want to super size it?_
IF CUSTOMERS ONLY CAME IN AND BOUGHT HAMBURGERS, MCDONALDS WOULD NOT MAKE IT.

The Next Right Thing (After Your Book)

We just watched Frozen 2 last week (for the umpteenth time, but it is great).
My daughter just loves it, she can sing every song and mimic every Elsa move in the movie.
And me, being one who always likes to find motivation in everything I watch, noticed one of the songs they sing in the movie.
It’s called _The Next Right Thing_…
At this point in the movie, Anna is paralyzed with grief, because she is in a desperate spot.
Elsa has missing, and she fears the worst. Especially since Olaf just melted.
So she starts singing this song.
She uses the to motivate herself to take the next step, to move forward and figure out what to do next. It is all on her.
It is not an unfamiliar feeling for authors.
When I launched my first book, I did everything I was supposed to do.
It hit bestseller on Amazon, and I thought I was on my way.
Except I wasn’t.
I was about to learn there is far more to turning your book into income and influence.
