I was about to run ads but it hit Bestseller all by itself, here’s how…

*** For More: Check out https://www.youru.tv ***

Hi Blog,

A little over a year ago, I was getting ready to run ads about two weeks before the launch of our anthology, _The Success Code._

THE BOOK WAS IN PRE-ORDER STATUS ON AMAZON.

I had mentioned it to my email list in passing, but that was about it.

I went to pull the link from the page to create some Bookbub Ads.

To my surprise, it was already a bestseller.

It turns out, one of the other authors, Lisa, had mentioned it in some of her groups and done some posting and cross linking. Combine that with a couple of mentions to my list, as well as all my other books drawing their daily attention and …

VOILA! A BESTSELLER.

This is an incredible example of what crowdsourcing not only the writing, but the marketing can do.

Each individual authors’ required effort goes down significantly.

That is why it is my favorite method of adding books to an author’s library.

Not only that, but our anthologies provide these other benefits:

* You get Bestselling Author Status (forever!) * Your chapter brings people to your world. This could be another book, your website, your course, or coaching. * You create another permanent marketing asset for your portfolio. Your goal is to create lead magnets and other content assets, that bring people to your work. * Your co-authors are marketing you forever after! Every time anyone of us sends someone to read this book, that person sees you. * Authority by association. Just being a co-author in a book shows you add value. * You don’t have to be a book marketer or learn book marketing to have a Bestseller. You just need to focus on your great chapter!

_Leap. Love. Grow._

RAY BREHM

P.S. By the way, that book The Success Code, is the first book in our (currently) four book anthology.

So guess what, any time one of those authors shares or promotes that book, the rest of the books in that series get highlighted and eyes on the authors of those (including the current book below).

Can Perpetual Marketing Work For You?

*** For More: Check out https://www.youru.tv ***

Hi Blog,

One of the most powerful things you can do for your book and/or your career is something I call perpetual marketing.

_What is it?_

A PIECE OF MARKETING CONTENT THAT YOU CREATE ONE TIME, THAT WORKS ON YOUR BEHALF FOREVER.

Oh yea, and it works for free. That means you don’t have to continue paying for it to work for you.

You probably know what I am getting at. When you create a book, it will work on your behalf forever (as long as you want it to).

That is why I am always finding ways to create more books. I find topics that need explaining or teaching, and I create a book.

At present, I have more book ideas sitting in a queue than I have time to produce. That is because completing an entire book yourself is hard work.

But books are one of the best ways to perpetually market I know.

_So, what is the answer?_

FINDING WAYS TO GET YOUR NAME ON BOOKS WHERE YOU DON’T HAVE TO DO ALL THE WORK.

I call it “crowdsourcing a book.”

If you look at my Amazon Author Library (on Author Central), nearly a third of my books are the result of crowdsourcing. They are anthologies, or multi-author books.

Each one now works for me as a perpetual marketing source. And I didn’t have to do all the work.

Some of them I was the organizer (the harder part) and put the whole book together. Some of them I simply participated by writing a chapter (the easier way).

The great thing about these “crowdsourced” books is not only are they perpetual marketing sources, but the marketing of the book is crowdsourced as well.

Each of those books has multiple people advertising and sharing them with their respective audiences.

So you as one of the authors will have a perpetual marketing tool working for you, that has crowdsourced the marketing effort.

Oh, and by the way, there are no recurring costs for the “perpetual marketing” part …

ongoing…and forever forward … to have all of this awesomeness.

You just have to find a book, and invest a little upfront and put in the effort for your chapter.

It is a great way to add titles to your library, and add some perpetual marketing to your brand.

P.S. Start perpetual marketing today.

The George Costanza School of Self-Publishing

*** For More: Check out https://www.youru.tv ***

Hi Blog,

There is this classic episode of Seinfeld called The Reverse Peephole.

There are a lot of storylines and subplots in this episode, but the main one revolves around the group planning to pool their money together and buy a massage recliner chair as an apartment warming gift for a friend.

George proclaims himself the one in charge of buying the chair, because he has a “_sixth sense for these sorts of things_.”

What he means, is he is good at finding deals.

To which Jerry replies, “_Cheapness is not a sense._”

Since the gift is a surprise, George has it delivered to his apartment to hold until the housewarming party.

While keeping the chair safe, George becomes addicted to sitting in the chair, and because of this denies having even bought the chair yet.

As the days pass, the rest of the group, for various reasons, turn sour on the whole idea of going in on the gift.

As George procrastinates revealing he has already bought it, the group one by one drop out of the commitment.

This left George with the chair, which he can decidedly not admit he had purchased at this point.

Any author starting out has probably had this same sort of procrastination.

I call it the GEORGE CONSTANZA SCHOOL OF SELF-PUBLISHING.

I suffered from it for a long time myself when I started.

We become experts at excuses (we can come up with all kinds of good reasons to procrastinate), but not at the actual execution of writing and publishing.

_I don’t have enough time._

_I need to take one more class._

_I need someone else to read and approve my manuscript._

(admittedly, I never suffered from this last one)

The truth is…

ALL IT REALLY TAKES IS COMMITTING.

I had 15 years of sticky notes in a folder of ideas and books I was “going” to write.

I used those same excuses above.

Then one day, at a conference, I walked by a vendor booth advertising an anthology.

ALL I HAD TO DO WAS WRITE ONE CHAPTER, THEN I WOULD HAVE A BOOK AND BE A BESTSELLING AUTHOR.

The price tag was steep, but the monetary commitment would ensure I would stop the procrastination madness, and finally become an author.

That quick decision and commitment changed the trajectory of my career.

It also motivated me to learn more.

A year and a half of later I was a “book guy” and helping others.

And participating in that anthology inspired me to create my own (with a much lower price tag).

All it took was EXPELLING MYSELF FROM THE GEORGE COSTANZA SCHOOL of Self-publishing and taking action.

_Leap. Love. Grow._

The Hardest Part about Writing Your Book

*** For More: Check out https://www.youru.tv ***

As an Author, here is how you can harness it ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

Hi Blog,

_What is the hardest part of writing your book?_

For me, there are a few items that can really slow me down.

First of all, getting motivated to write in the first place (when I picture 10-12 chapters, and maybe 15,000 words or more it seems such a tall task, that I often move to procrastination mode).

_Sound familiar?_

Then once you make progress, this inevitably happens:

YOU START READING YOUR WORK. YIKES!!

My internal monologue:

_OMG, this is no good! Who is going to want to read that?_

Ever say that to yourself?

Then here is what happens to me…

I start chapter comparing….

This is when you start comparing your chapters to each other.

_Chapter 1 is great. _

_Chapter 2 is pretty good. _

_But 3 and 4 feel forced, and Chapter 5 is downright horrible. _

More internal monologue:

_I probably should just start over!_

Do you ever tell yourself anything like that?

You can nitpick your book to death. Always trying to improve each chapter compared to the others.

YOU CAN GO INTO A PERFECTION LOOP, AND NEVER GET THE GOSH DARN BOOK DONE.

_The Solution?_

First, realize that perfection is the enemy of done.

Second, write your best chapter, join my next book and become a bestseller in the next 180 days.

The Ghost of Trollness Past

*** For More: Check out https://www.youru.tv ***

Hi Blog,

EXHIBIT A

A guy hires me to launch his book, and treats me like absolute rubbish. I refund him and tell him best of luck. He sneaks in to one of my virtual summits and starts contacting other speakers to try to get someone to launch his book.

The first one he contacts (very well known) tells him he should contact “Ray Brehm.” The second one emails me and basically is asking on his behalf (begging) for my help. Sorry no. The third one has already heard my story and wants nothing to do with him. All of them notice he is not a nice person.

EXHIBIT B

I guest speak at a live event. I offer a free class to those who watched. The host receives an email forwards it to me, someone complaining that they have registered for my free course, they are not getting email confirmation and are demanding access (they didn’t even ask nicely). I look up the email, and it turns out she opted in for some free stuff of mine the year before, and then promptly marked my email as spam. Neither I nor my software will let her back in. I send her a “sorry you did this to yourself” email.

EXHIBIT C

A guy sends me an email recently. He says, “You have me blocked. I am trying to attend your summit.” I look in my software (Kartra), and it is blocking him. So I look at the notes attached to his email in the system, and they remind me that he sent me a nastygram 8 months earlier. I send a note back, “I see what it was, you sent me a nastygram back in November.”

ALL OF THESE ARE EXAMPLES OF HOW THE GHOST OF TROLLNESS PAST WILL CATCH UP WITH THOSE WHO DECIDE TO DO IT.

The fact that you are reading this means it is highly unlikely you fit in that category.

But it is an important point to make…

REPUTATION GOES BOTH WAYS.

If you are an author, entrepreneur or a thoughtleader (or plan to be), trolling someone above or below you is a zero sum game. It will never pay off.

In fact, most likely it will come full circle at some point.

That is why you, me and everyone else should always be curating who we work with, and spend our time nurturing relationships not trolling them.

That is why I actively curate my list and my relationships.

Some of my best partners were first subscribers on my list. (those types never troll others by the way)

INTERESTINGLY, ONE OF THE BEST WAYS TO SEE WHO IS THINKING LONG TERM (MY FUTURE PARTNERS) AND WHO IS MORE INTERESTED IN VIRTUE SIGNALING AND GRANDSTANDING, IS TO MAKE AN OFFER.

Anyone offended by an offer you make is clearly of the scarcity mindset, and not suited to partner with you (let alone be on your list).

THAT IS WHY I LOVE TO LAUNCH MY ANTHOLOGY BOOKS.

I inevitably will get some comments like:

* _How dare you charge for this_ * _My friend can help me do this for free_ * _Why do you charge more in Australia (ignoring the exchange rate)_ * Or,_ where should I send my chapter (pretending not to read the sales page)_

It helps myself and the other authors make sure we only get top quality co-authors on the project and I get to curate my list at the same time.

SO NEXT TIME YOU ARE WORRIED ABOUT MAKING AN OFFER, DON’T BE. IT IS ONE OF THE BEST WAYS TO SEE WHO IS WHO.

And I love learning who are the best of the best on my list aka the abundant thinkers.

Like Warren Buffet says, “When the tide goes out, you find out who has been skinny dipping.”

How Authors Can Beat Cancel Culture

*** For More: Check out https://www.youru.tv ***

Hi Blog,

Long before _Cancel Culture_ became a mainstream idea, and a full time job for those living in their parents’ basements…

It was alive and growing on the pages of Amazon…

in the form of book reviews collectively distinguished by the always anonymous “Amazon Customer.”

These _Book Justice Warriors_ spend their time bad mouthing books on Amazon for sport.

I realize there do exist some accurate reviews of books out there, and reviews play an important role for purchasers…

but I am on a roll, so let me continue…

There is a subset of the people who have nothing better to do that try to tear down those who create things (especially authors).

These are the cancelers, 1-star reviewers, trolls, etc…

who many times haven’t even read the book, and definitely haven’t tried to understand anything.

Sometimes they are even other authors who anonymously try to beat their competition by leaving bad reviews for competing books.

When I first started out, I remember not being able to sleep at night when I received a bad review.

I would dwell on thoughts like…

_They are taking that out of context._

_How did they not get that?_

_They clearly didn’t even read it._

_This seems more like a personal attack._

Sometimes they were right. Many times they were just mean spirited.

Almost all of them anonymous.

It is pretty easy when you have read enough reviews to know which reviews are meant to help buyers, and those that are meant solely to bully.

Unfortunately, Amazon’s algorithm doesn’t know, or just doesn’t care.

BUT IF YOU WERE EVER A CHILD (MOST OF US HAVE BEEN), AND DEALT WITH A BULLY, YOU WILL NOTICE THEY ALL HAVE ONE THING IN COMMON.

They would much rather go after individuals than groups.

This concept is especially true for authors.

I was recently looking at one of my anthology books, _The Success Code_, which now has over 100 reviews with a 4.6 star average.

There are very few 1 – 3 star reviews, and none of those have any text associated with them.

This is highly unusual, as most of the time these types of reviewers 1-3 star givers) like to say what they think.

But it is a little different with an anthology, because in order to criticize one author, they have to be willing to criticize them all.

AND REMEMBER, BULLIES DON’T LIKE TO DO THAT.

That is why it is nice to occasionally participate in anthologies. There is safety in numbers and it gives you a solid additional book for your Amazon Author page.

If you are just starting out, this can be very appealing, because fear of bad reviews almost always slows new and solo authors in their tracks.

The Greatest Show on Earth (for authors)

*** For More: Check out https://www.youru.tv ***

Hi Blog,

I recall going to the circus as a child, with a short list of what I wanted to see.

I loved the trapeze, the elephants and the lions.

Those were my main reason for going.

Inevitably, however, I would leave the circus loving some of the other amazing acts just as much.

The part where they invited all the kids to come down and ride in carriages around the arena as part of the finale comes to mind.

There were amazing horse riders, sword swallowers, and many other acts that I left the event raving about.

Plus, of course, the cotton candy.

Now, had you mentioned these other acts in the beginning, to try to lure me to the circus (without my favorites included), I would not have been nearly as interested.

I came for certain acts, and left loving some new ones.

The same is true when you are just starting out as an author.

IT CAN BE HARD TO GET MORE EYES ON YOUR “ACT” IN THE BEGINNING.

But if you can showcase your talent alongside of others, you can attract and build your own readership.

IT IS A WAY TO GET MORE EYES ON YOU AND YOUR WORK.

Rather than waiting years for your name to be in headlines, you can jump start the process.

IT IS LIKE THAT OLD SAYING, T.E.A.M.,

TOGETHER

EVERYONE

ACHIEVES

MORE

When you take part in an anthology, you have multiple authors bringing attention to the book, which in turn brings eyes on you, as a co-author.

I call it crowdsourcing an audience.

That is why I host and also participate in as many anthologies as possible.

With an anthology, I know there will forever be multiple authors bringing attention to that book, and as a result, more people be introduced to me and my work.

Just one of the many reasons I THINK A WELL-RUN ANTHOLOGY IS ONE OF THE GREATEST SHOWS ON EARTH FOR AUTHORS.

Well, that and cotton candy.

The Accidental Publishing Tip That Changed Everything I Do

*** For More: Check out https://www.youru.tv ***

Hi Blog,

A couple of years ago I became friends with the great Marc Reklau.

He writes books on happiness and habits.

He is also one of the few people I know who lives off of his royalties (to the tune of 20k USD a month).

I have interviewed him many times for summits, podcasts, etc.

ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF AGO, HE MADE MENTION OF ONE LITTLE THING THAT HAS COMPLETELY CHANGED HOW I DO THINGS.

He said he puts every one of his books in a series of some type on Amazon.

I recall thinking that a series was really only something useful for fiction authors.

But when I looked it quickly made sense.

When you put your books in series, you get these benefits:

* the ‘real estate” (Amazon book page space) directly below your book description becomes free advertising space for the other books in your series (it used to show paid ads or also-boughts). * Readers of one book in the series are automatically given guidance as to which other books of yours they may be interested in * Book browsers who look at your page instantly see you as more credible and serious about your craft, because they can see your other books (without going to your author page) * Any interest in one of your books may turn a non-purchaser into a purchaser, when they find a more appropriate book in the series than the one the first clicked on * You can create a special series page with even more information and searchable content

What makes one person interested in you and your books, may be different for the next. That is why showing them what you have to offer as soon and as easily as possible is paramount.

It is easy to see your other works, and build authority using a series.

It is amazing.

Now every book I publish is part of a planned series.

BUT THERE IS ANOTHER THING YOU CAN DO TO SUPER CHARGE THE USE OF A SERIES.

And that is participate in an anthology that is part of a series.

Take our “Code” series:

* The Success Code * The Happiness Code * The Wealth Code * The Entrepreneur Code (open enrollment now)

When The Entrepreneur Code enrollment closes, we will have close to 100 authors across the entire series (and it won’t stop there as we add future books).

Each time one of those 100 authors mentions their book, and someone checks it out, all of the books in the series benefit.

In fact, all 100 authors are exposed to that new reader.

As we add authors and books to the series, everyone’s benefits continue to increase.

That is why I love the combination of using series and anthologies (which very few host authors use).

By the way, you can create your own series with multiple books very easily inside your KDP account.

BUT IF YOU WANT TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF BOTH SERIES AND ANTHOLOGIES, BE SURE TO GET ON ONE THAT DOES BOTH.

_Leap. Love. Grow._

She was bad mouthing me, and I was glad she did

*** For More: Check out https://www.youru.tv ***

Hi Blog,

A short time ago I was a guest presenter on a live three-day book marketing training.

I presented on _virtual summits as a way to create an audience_.

I was getting some great feedback in the comments, so I stuck around and watched them for a little while after my presentation.

As the host came back on and started commenting about how anthologies can work for authors like virtual summits do, the conversation in the chat turned to anthologies.

Quickly the “_experts_” (sarcasm meant) in the chat started talking about anthologies.

_Side note, don’t ever take advice from other participants during a webinar. They are the ones that like to talk and don’t listen. And almost always dole out bad advice. _

Anyhoo…they were talking about getting together an anthology amongst them and how it would be free.

Then I saw the comment,

_“That is why I didn’t join one of Ray’s anthologies. Here charges $1000.”_

Have you ever had one of those moments like,

_“Hello!?!?!!! I am still standing here.”_

I didn’t respond (I probably wouldn’t anyway, but definitely not in this case because it was not my event).

Interestingly, the person who said made the comment was from my email list, and was probably attending the event because I had promoted it.

For me, I have no need to defend my product or price. It is a premium product. In fact, the contribution should be higher than it is.

We offer a well-packaged book and well-run system, and each contributor is guaranteed to become a bestselling author.

In the chat, they went on to discuss places (not Amazon) where they could publish their anthology that had a feature that could divide up the royalties among the authors.

THAT IS WHEN I HAD TO CHUCKLE.

First, any serious author knows an anthology is not about royalties. It is not an income play. It is for authority, and getting more eyes on you as a contributor.

Second, let’s do some quick math.

You create an anthology with 30 authors, and sell the eBook at 99¢. The royalty (using an Amazon scheme) will be about 30¢.

THESE PEOPLE IN THE CHAT WERE FOCUSING, AS THEIR HIGHEST PRIORITY, ON FINDING A PLATFORM THAT WOULD HELP THEM SPLIT 30¢, 30 WAYS.

Those are not the types of people I want on my anthology books.

Nor should you.

THAT IS WHY I AM GLAD SHE BAD MOUTHED ME.

Part of my messaging during enrollment for my anthologies is geared toward weeding out those with scarcity mindsets.

Not only would they be a pain for me to deal with as the anthology host, but they are the types I don’t want to put on books with the amazing co-authors that join us.

So when I see a red flag with someone, they do not qualify as a co-author.

It is great because it is kind of like asking people to raise their hands if they would be bad co-authors.

THE PEOPLE THAT MY CONTRIBUTION AMOUNT ATTRACTS ARE BUSINESS MINDED, AND ON THEIR WAY UP.

They believe in investing in themselves.

THEY ARE ABUNDANCE MINDED.

Which is more than I can say for people worried about splitting 30 cents 30 ways.

I HAVE HOSTED AND PARTICIPATED ON MANY ANTHOLOGIES.

They have all been very high quality, and never has there been a royalty split. That’s just a waste of time.

The function of anthologies is building authority, adding a book to your library and putting more eyes on all the authors.

Think about it from your perspective.

_Would you rather co-author a book with decisive, abundance minded people or those worried about who gets the penny royalties? _

_Would those willing to invest in themselves be more willing to promote you (and in turn put more eyes on your work)?_

_What do you think will happen when it comes time to ante up for marketing with the penny authors?_

_Do you think it will be an easy task all 30 authors need to decide on a cover? Will it be based on quality or price?_

One of the most important parts of an anthology is the leader, and the launch plan (someone who has done it before on both counts).

That is why I am proud of what we do with our anthologies.

In fact, our enrollment contribution is probably too low, but I won’t be changing the amount for this one it until after the clock runs out Sunday night at midnight.

This advice applies to almost anything you do.

You are the sum of the company you keep.

Anthologies are forever. 🙂

The Counterintuitive Way To Get More Eyes on Your Books

*** For More: Check out https://www.youru.tv ***

Hi Blog,

The formula seems pretty simple, right?

Especially when you are starting out…

The idea is that to get more eyes on your books you just need to run more ads (and spend more money).

_That is what the pros do, right? _

_That is why they sell you courses on how to run ads, right?_

I can tell you, nothing was more frustrating for me than solving this dilemma when I was just getting started.

In fact, even a couple of years into self-publishing, I still see authors struggling because they are convinced this is the way.

A few years ago I completely stopped using Facebook Ads, and I barely do any Amazon Ads (the only ads I run are for my free books at the moment).

The gurus like you to believe that you just don’t understand Amazon Ads, or that the algorithm has changed.

In which case, you need to buy their next ads course.

I am not against running ads (or you doing it yourself), but you better enjoy doing it if that is to be your only way of getting more eyes on your book.

However, since I stopped focusing on ads, and focused on what I am about to tell you, my book downloads has seen a huge increase.

_So what do you do?_

YOU HAVE OTHERS RECOMMEND IT FOR YOU, WITHOUT THE COST OF RUNNING ADS.

_How does one do that?_

Well, you could go ask other influencers to promote your book directly. But you probably already know that is a tough ask (when you don’t have anything valuable to offer in return).

You could also host a virtual summit (my top choice for this).

When all the speakers send their audience to your summit, you get 1000s of new eyes on your book or books (because they have introduced their best audience to you).

But some people aren’t yet ready to invest the time, money and energy to summits.

_Want to know a faster way?_

Get on A WELL-RUN ANTHOLOGY book as a co-author.

When any one of the other authors sends someone to read that book (directly or indirectly), you get eyes on you and whatever else you want them to see (the content and contact info contained in your chapter).

It is permanent marketing (without ongoing ad costs) for you and your literary works.

The time investment to get it done (as a co-author contributor) is minimal, usually just submitting your chapter.

And if the host author is knowledgeable at launching books, there will almost instantly be a lot of eyes on you and your work.

It is really tough to beat from a time / money investment standpoint.

_SO, WHERE DO YOU FIND WELL-RUN ANTHOLOGY BOOKS YOU CAN PARTICIPATE IN?_

That is what we will be talking about this week, starting tomorrow.

_Leap. Love. Grow._
