complexity and vulnerability. The main characters in Parker’s ten
multi-genre stories set in the heart of Appalachia want to be heard;
to have others listen to them-really listen-and understand their
needs and concerns.
The characters in these stories do not always get listened to, and many of them find that the
need for attention comes from aggression. A woman confronts her
father about his dementia. Two fathers whose guilt and shame over the
disappearances of their sons hide more sinister motives. A young boy
frustrated with a ring appraisal learns a lesson about how people and
things can be valued equally. Each of the characters in the
collection is faced with a balance of talking and listening with a
need for action, which often leads to manipulation and coercion.
The characters in these stories want to be heard; to have others listen to them-really listen-and
understand their needs and concerns. However, when they do not get
listened to, there is often an attempted persuasion by aggression.
One character often finds himself/herself faced with another
character who believes that conversation has no place in their lives.
The belief of the antagonists in these stories is that- who needs to talk when there is action that
needs to be done? The antagonists believe that there is no need for
conversation when the protagonist can be manipulated, coerced, or
discredited by actions. Each story is a thrilling adventure with
unexpected turns. Parker’s honest and provocative prose will
captivate readers with its urgency.
Eliot Parker is the author of the thriller novel A FINAL CALL, which was
named a “Best Indie Book to Discover in 2022” by Kirkus
Magazine and was a finalist in thriller novel from the London Book
Festival. His short story collection SNAPSHOTS, won the 2020 PenCraft

Thia let out a scream as an arm circled her waist, lifting her off the ground momentarily. Her hood fell back, her pale blonde hair blowing in the stiff wind. “Consorting with the Fallen now, Althir? I didn’t think you were this kind of ‘honorable’.” A male voice sounded in her ear.
She twisted her body, struggling to free herself. Whoever held her tightened his grip, forcing her closer to him.
“Let her go, Alesso. This is bigger than any grudge you have. The Gods are involved.” Thia snapped her head up at Jinaari’s voice. His sword was out, his eyes looking at her captor.
Thia’s heart hammered in her chest as fear set in. “Where were the Gods when my family was taken, Althir? Maybe this witch knows how to find them. I won’t know until I ask.” Alesso’s body shifted as he changed his stance.
“She’s part of my task, Alesso. You were there when it was given to me. Put revenge aside long enough to obey Garret’s will.”
What did Father Phillip teach me? After one of the acolytes tried to grab me that first week after Papa died? Pushing down her fear, Thia slammed her foot onto Alesso’s. He screamed in surprise; his arm relaxing. Breaking free, she ran toward the captain. The captain gestured toward her as the sound of swords meeting rang out. She stopped as she got to him, turning to see Jinaari and Alesso fighting.

Born in the late 1960’s, K. M. has lived most of her live in the Pacific NW. While she’s always been creative, she didn’t turn towards writing until 2008. Writing under the pen name of KateMarie Collins, she released several titles. In 2019, the decision was made to forge a new path with her books. Q & A With … K. M. Warfield
Tell us about you as a person.
Oh, that’s a tricky one! I’m fluent in sarcasm, adore cats (currently owned by a tortie who’s about to remind me it’s bedtime), have been married for going on 29 years, 2 kids that decided to grow up and graduate college on me.
I play D&D every other week. I make a mean roasted lemon chicken and a French Silk chocolate pie that’s to die for.
And I’ve been dealing with what I call the trifecta – anxiety, depression, and PTSD. I’ve made progress, and that’s a good thing.
If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?
Probably Mark Hamill. I was 7 when the first Star Wars movie came out. His portrayal of Luke Skywalker woke something up in me. It showed me that I didn’t have to be special in some way. I simply had to be willing to do what needed to be done. I’d probably be an absolute mess of a fan girl, babbling and stammering, but being able to even have a five-minute conversation would be incredible. I just want to be able to shake his hand and say thank you.
What’s the story behind your latest book?
So, I’m a D&D nerd. Always have been. For over a decade, I’ve been playing with some of the same people. They’ll come and go, depending on things like work schedules, etc, but they’ve become family. We did a 3 ½ year campaign where everything just clicked. It was one of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had. The campaign was nearing the end when COVID hit and we went to a virtual game instead of in person. I didn’t take the isolation well at all. They were checking on me. Would leave coffee on the porch. They helped me get through it. I wanted to honor that, show the world that friends can be family in a way as important if not more than blood relations. I also really liked playing Thia and wasn’t ready to let her go. So, I started writing a book based somewhat on the game. It was my thank you to them for being there when I needed them the most.
What advice do you have for other writers who want to get the word out about their latest book?
Find the way you’re comfortable promoting and run with it vs. trying to do it all. I’m much better in person than I am online, and my publisher knows this. I don’t do a lot of online promoting, but rather focus on getting into bookstores and doing signings, etc.
The thing is, you have to connect with readers. Give them something that makes them want to pick up your book and read the blurb. Screaming ‘buy my book’ all day on social media won’t do that.

A not so secret behind the series title, ‘Heroes of Avoch’!
When I was in Inverness, I went out and saw the dolphins in Moray Firth. The town I caught the boat at was called Avoch. The people were amazing, and the village felt so right… when I was writing and needed a name for the world, it didn’t take much to decide.
