 I am Canadian, born and raised in Alberta on a lovely acreage just
outside of Edmonton to musical parents. I began my arts career as a
musician, leaving home at the age of fifteen to play in a rock band,
then went on to become a singer/songwriter. I wrote songs and told
stories with melodies, lucky enough to tour Canada and record four
studio albums, as well as work as a studio musician. I spent years
singing my heart out. However, when I discovered the limitless
creativity of novel writing, I shifted my focus to a literary career.
My extraordinary experiences as a musician continue to fuel my
writing. I am deeply inspired by art and profoundly humbled by the
creativity of others. Creating is a fundamental part of my life, and
expressing myself through storytelling is incredibly important to me.

I like to write

characterized by action, adventure, lots of romance, and unexpected
twists. I like to put my characters in unique settings and fully
explore their motivations while drawing heavily on my personal
experiences.

I am honored to be
represented by Elizabeth Winick Rubinstein of McIntosh and Otis, one
of the USA’s longest-running literary agencies, representing
remarkable authors such as the late John Steinbeck and Harper Lee. As
a ‘hybrid’ author, Elizabeth represents my adult works, while I
represent my young adult works. I am determined not to limit myself
to one specific genre and hope to follow in the footsteps of authors
who have achieved success this way, as I value the artistic freedom
it affords.

At present, I have
four published novels; Serenade, Nocturne and Rhapsody, all which
have achieved bestseller status in digital sales. My newest novel,
Atomica: Between Sea and Sky, was just released on August 27, 2024,
and is the first book in a new young adult fantasy series.

Claire can’t remember a time when writing wasn’t part of her
life. Growing up, she used to write stories with her friends. As
a teenager she started out reading fantasy and science fiction, but
her diet quickly changed to romance and happily-ever-after’s. A
native of Massachusetts and cold weather, she left all that behind to
move to the sun and fun of California, but has always lived no more
than twenty miles from the ocean.

In college she studied acting with a minor in creative writing. In
hindsight she should have flipped course studies. Before she was
published, she sold books on eBay and discovered some of her favorite
authors by sampling the goods, which was the perfect solution. Claire

Visibly, yet quietly, annoyed, Hugh stood with his arms folded over his chest and a deep frown on his face. Still, this was his duty. Hugh held his place just off of the stage in the center of Nightbrooke.

The stage. That’s all it was, in his opinion. Everyone avoided even stepping on it when it was empty. Not out of respect, but out of fear. The only performances ever held on this stage were to overflow those who traveled through the underground world, secret from all mortals, with the certainty that if they put one toe-—one hair, one breath—out of line, they would be punished.

This place—Nightbrooke; Tenatoria; El Reino Mágico—

whatever it was called where that particular inhabitant was originally from—was intended to be a sanctuary for supernatural beings. It was supposed to be a safe place where they could be whatever they were without having to hide it. But this stage showed that this wasn’t sanctuary for everyone.

The only people who wanted to be on that stage were Hugh’s fellow council leaders. He had no desire to ever step foot on those ancient wooden boards, held together by even more ancient magic.

That’s why he hung off to the side. The others, however, relished these moments. Anything to see the fear in the eyes of the people they felt were a lower status than them.

Reon, King of the Abyss—the man who thought he was the King of Everything—was babbling on and on about the alleged crimes that the person before him had committed. He stood proudly on those wooden boards holding a scroll. He was nearly floating above the boards with joy. Hugh could hear Reon’s flutter from where he stood.

The difference between the two of them was a constant tension on the Council. They debated on opposite sides of every decision, to the point where Reon asked if Hugh was opposing him intentionally and just for the sake of being contentious.

Q &A With … Katie Groom: Reader, Dogmom, Maker-Upper of Words, and Author of the Cardinal Moon Saga

Tell us about you as a person.

As a person, I’m pretty boring, to be honest!

I think one of the core things that makes me who I am, though, is that I truly practice the idea that kindness matters. To me, being “kind” and being “nice” are very different. Anyone can be nice for moments here and there, but kindness is a way of life. It’s about remembering that everyone is facing something that you don’t know about. Lead every interaction from a place of caring and you really can’t go wrong.

Maybe it’s my day-job in Human Resources that makes me that way! Or maybe it’s that I was bullied incessantly throughout childhood and never wanting anyone else to feel that way.

If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?

I’m going to go with a celebrity that has passed — and one that’s probably not chosen very often. Chris Farley. As a child, my siblings and I would stay up very late and watch SNL and Chris Farley movies. His work brought us so many laughs and great memories. While he wasn’t the best role model (that’s an understatement – haha!), he holds a special place in my heart.

What’s the story behind your latest book?

Rising Moon is the final installment of the Cardinal Moon Saga, and it’s a fitting conclusion to a story that has been an adventure for me. It was actually the most difficult to write in the series because, well, I knew that writing it meant the end of Hugh’s story. He’s been such a safe space for me, as I’ve navigated a difficult few years. Putting this out there for the world to read has ended a major chapter in my own life, and I hope that others find something in it for them.

What advice do you have for other writers who want to get the word out about their latest book?

OK – Soooo… I’m the literal worst about this. But I feel like you have to start long before your book is ready to be published. Perhaps start as soon as you realize that you’ve got something you would like to share with the world. Start by supporting other authors and artists. Share their work; like their posts. Find your niche and your brand, and see how you fit in and stand out at the same time. Be yourself — be your authentic self — and you’ll find people that are interested in what you have to say.

And once you start posting or tweeting or tiktoking (is that the phrase for it?), you have to be consistent. Because once you find your audience, you have to continue to be engaging to keep them engaged. The world is so instant and the next viral thing shows up and takes the spot of the current viral thing. (This is the step that I’m bad at).
