LEA
A lone figure lingers in the back corner of the elevator wearing a navy-blue Yankees baseball hat, their face cast downwards. I push for level two when there is a large bang. The lights flicker and go out. Deathly silence follows but is broken by a curse word behind me. I whip around, trying to make out the figure’s face.
“Watch that cape, you almost gave me cape burn,” the voice grumbles.
“Sorry. I never knew how annoying wearing a cosplay costume would be,” I reply, biting my lip.
When the silence continues, I nervously keep up my word vomit. “This is my first time coming to one of these things. I should’ve taken a page out of your book and worn the incognito star look. I would’ve been more comfortable on the plane flight earlier this morning and gotten less strange looks.”
Backup lights flicker on. I can barely see the figure lift his head and look at me directly in the eyes. My heart drops.
“About the incognito star look,” he says, his dark eyes full of hesitation.
No way.
No freaking way.
He isn’t playing an incognito star.
He is the star of today’s show. The last-minute addition that made the entire WizCon event sell out as soon as his name was announced.
A gasp escapes my mouth. I can’t physically stop it if I tried. I’m from the middle of nowhere Ohio. You don’t see a movie star on an elevator or anywhere in your vicinity. Keep calm, Lea, don’t scare him off. He’s incognito for a reason.
“Oh.”
That’s what I come up with to say. I mean, what else am I going to utter aloud?

Diane Billas currently lives in Philadelphia with her husband and son. When she’s not writing she can be found reading multiple books at once, performing the French horn or piano, or dreaming of the next country she’s going to visit.

Q & A With …
Tell us about you as a person.
I’m a young adult author who loves watching superhero movies, curling up with a book and mug of pumpkin rooibos tea, and traveling somewhere new. I’m also a mom to a toddler, play the French horn and piano, and married to my husband of eight years. I’m an introvert who can be an extrovert when needed with a snarky sense of humor. I was either going to be an author or an actor…and author won out, but it’s never too late to do both!
If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?
Tom Hiddleston because I loved his portrayal of Loki in all of the Marvel films and TV series. I’d want to pick his brain about how he prepared for the role and his thoughts on Loki as a character.
What’s the story behind your latest book?
Clearly, I love all things superheroes and villains, so I decided to try my hand at writing my own superhero story. This one is told from a dual perspective and is centered around a comic-con like convention in Philadelphia. Lea is there as a fan with her ex and Jake is the star of the show, portraying The Amazing Boy in the movies but also secretly a superhero in real life. Our two main characters find themselves trapped in an elevator of the convention during a power outage and when they escape, everyone at the comic-con has disappeared. And on top of that, items around some of Philadelphia’s top cultural institutions go missing one by one. Lea, Jake, and a few friends they meet along the way, must team up to not only save the city of Philadelphia, but the world.
What advice do you have for other writers who want to get the word out about their latest book?
Make friends with other authors and, if it’s your first book, join a debut group. I still am friends with authors in my 2023 debut group and we help promote each other’s books. Also, try a variety of ways of promoting your book, and if they don’t work, try other ways. Some other ideas include getting on podcasts, write guest blog posts, do Instagram/TikTok lives with other authors, and start a newsletter and/or blog.
List 5 things on your bucket list.
1. Visit Norway; I’m a huge fan of Norse mythology so it’s always been my dream to go there.
2. Have one of my books win a book award
3. Make the New York Times Best Sellers list
4. Visit London; a lot of my writer friends I’ve met live there, and I’d love to meet them in real life!
5. Make a viral TikTok video; you just never know when one of your videos could go viral and perhaps more people will find out about your books.
Any final thoughts?
Growing up I never had access to queer books, so now I say I write the books I wished I could have read in high school. I make sure all of the books I write have some type of queer representation.

novels in middle school, which combined her passion for romance, drama, and
