Gravity – Movie Review

Gravity – 2013

Starring Sandra Bullock, George Clooney

IMDB Rating: 8.3

Plot: A medical engineer and an astronaut work together to survive after an accident leaves them adrift in space.

gravity_ver4_xlg

Review: “Gravity” is a spellbinding and beautiful movie as two people encounter dire circumstances one after the other. A group of astronauts is hit by by debris from a Russian satellite which the Russians accidentally blew up, and their shuttle is destroyed and most of the crew is killed. The two survivors played by George Clooney (Matt Kowalski) and Sandra Bullock (Ryan Stone) now have to make their way to the International Space Station and further without any help or communications as most of the communication satellites were destroyed. Survival is the name of the game, but inner strength is what shines for these characters.

Sandra Bullock carries this film from beginning to end, as she fights for survival with time running out. Ms Bullock has always been one of my favorite actresses, ever since I first saw her in the Stallone flick, Demolition Man. In this film she holds her own and proves once again she is an actress who can play a diverse range of characters. George Clooney basically plays himself… in a spacesuit :)

Gravity is wonderfully written and visually gripping. You have heard all the hype, this is a film to see!

In The Flesh – TV Show Review

In the Flesh – TV Series. 2013 -

Plot: Four years after the Rising, the government starts to rehabilitate the Undead back into the society including teenager Kieren Walker, who returns home to his small Lancashire village to face a hostile reception as well as his own demons.

Starring: Luke Newberry; Harriet Cains.

InTheFlesh

Review: Always one for a good zombie show, I took to this like a duck to water. In The Flesh begins by asking, “What if the undead could be cured?” Set after the outbreak of the dead rising from the graves, the government has invented a vaccine that is injected directly into the back of the neck to stop the rotters from turning back into the biters they once were.

The show focuses on Kieren, a recovering zombie who is placed back with his family and he has to deal with his condition as well as the prejudice that comes from the community around him. To catch the allegories of the different social issues and unacceptance that we are bombarded with in today’s society (Sexual orientation, Mental illnesses), you may need to watch this series twice. The show is well-written with a cast of talented actors in this delightful BBC drama. My only gripe is that the series ran for 3 episodes, but I can only hope that there will be more of this show to come.

Very different from AMC’s The Walking Dead, this is a good drama that will be sure to keep lovers of all things “Zombie” entertained. :)

Killer Contact – TV Show Review

Killer Contact – TV Series. 2013 -

Plot: A paranormal team travels to the world’s most haunted locations where infamous crimes were committed. They try to solve these cold cases by the only method they know; gathering evidence with the help of the supernatural using their technical ghost hunting equipment and role-playing scenarios to communicate with them.

Starring: Austin Cook – The Point Man; Greg Niecestro – The Antagonizer; Hector Barragan – The Tech Guru ; Adam Leidenfrost – The Brain; Molly O’Connolly – The Role Player.

Review: Being an enthusiast for good Paranormal Shows (such as Ghost Adventures, and Ghost Lab), I dove right in for this one, expecting to see a new show that had the merit to go a long way…. How wrong I was with this one… Killer Contact is a new paranormal show on Syfy.

Thankfully, we are only subjected to 6 episodes of this “pearl”, and one can only hope that there will not be a “season 2″. In the season premiere, the “team” head off to jolly ol’ London to solve the mystery of “who is Batman“… Errr, I mean “who was Jack The Ripper“…A riddle that has eluded investigators and Scotland Yard for a good 125 years. But, lo and behold, these “eager young Ghost Hunting cadets” manage to solve this age old mystery in the span of 2 days. (yeah okay). But, there is more. We were briefly treated to see Molly “trying to seduce Jack”, which was quite laughable. Seriously girl, if you want to seduce Jack The Ripper, wouldn’t it make sense to be dressed in Victorian Era clothing, and NOT in one of your skirts that you obviously hit the club scene every weekend in?

The 2nd episode the team head off to Transylvania, to investigate the legend of Dracula.  I admit I fell asleep after the 30 minute mark, but I did stay awake long enough to see Greg yell and scream like an idiot to try and lure Vlad out of hiding. Seriously, IF Vlad is still haunting the castle, I seriously doubt he would understand a word of English, unless he has been attending English classes in the afterlife…

I doubt if I will watch the 3rd episode, based on what I have seen so far. I have seen some good Paranormal shows, and I have seen bad ones. But this one falls into the category of L for Lame.

My advice. Switch over to GAC instead. More entertaining :)

The Underneath – Movie Review

The Underneath

Starring Holt Boggs, Natalie Wilemon.

Plot: A young newlywed couple find themselves trapped in a network of underground caves. With her husband injured, the new bride is forced to find her way back to the surface in order to save his life. In the process, they discover a terrifying truth about the “underneath”, they are not alone. Something evil is hunting them

MV5BMjI3MjI2NzQwMF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwMTk2NDU4OQ@@._V1_SX640_SY720_Review: If you have seen this movie, and the storyline seems very familiar, then BINGO! You’ve seen it before with Descent. With this movie, we are not treated to a group of girlfriends who decide to go exploring vast caverns, but rather a newly married couple who decide to go on a camping trip and fall pray to a colony of “crawlers” (See Descent). As entertaining as it was (not) to see a bad version of previously mentioned film, one can only wonder how some people manage to get funding to make a film.

Save your time (and the popcorn) and watch Descent 1 & 2 instead. :)

Poseidon Rex Movie Review

Plot: A small, secluded island off the coast of Belize suddenly finds itself terrorized by a deadly predator from the planet’s distant past when deep sea divers accidentally awaken an ancient evil.

PoseidonRex

Review: It is not often when I can sit through a B-grade movie without wanting to switch over to something else. This was almost no different. The movie started out as predictable as you can expect. A Half-dinosaur (P-Rex) half sea monster creates havoc on an island off the coast of Belize. Welcome the troupe to the rescue here. The “Alpha male’s answer to Lara Croft”, Jax, The sexy blond Scientist, Sarah (who looks like she just graduated from Spring Break), All Party boy Rod and his ever annoying girlfriend, Jane (thankfully we don’t see too much of her, as she takes off to a boat party with the “poor man’s answer to Tom Cruise, and is soon killed off by the CGI dino :) )

During all the bad CGI effects of dinosaur on the rampage and the amount of gun-fire, Jax and Sarah do get that ever predictable “lets have sex” scene. Never mind about the guy in the next room, and the conveniently made up bed in the war-room (what????). Of course, after Jax ploughs her, it’s “business as usual”, and tra-la-la, the predictable demise of the CGI dinosaur.

Film made some merit, and a good concept, but the lack of acting ability and bad CGI was a major let down for me. Not to mention the vast plot-holes which were as obvious as driving into a lake :)

If you are in the mood for a B-grade flick, then by all means watch this, even for picking out all the holes in this film.

2013 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 2,100 times in 2013. If it were a cable car, it would take about 35 trips to carry that many people.

2012 AFL Premiership Match

Sydney has captured the 2012 premiership, outlasting Hawthorn by 10 points at the MCG.

In one of the toughest, tightest grand finals, the Swans kicked the last four goals of the game to clinch victory, 14.7 (91) to 11.15 (81).

The Hawks jumped out to an early lead with a couple of quick goals to end the first quarter.

Congratulations Sydney Swans on winning the 2012 AFL Premiership.
