PROJECT RUNWAY....My TOP 5 OMG MOMENTS and RECAP of "Project Runway" Season 15 Episode 5: Mary Kay Team Challenge!
Nick Verreos "Top 5 OMG Moments" YouTube Video for "Project Runway Season 15, Episode 5
It's time for my "Top 5 OMG Moments" and RECAP of this past week's "Project Runway" ! The challenge involved Mary Kay, the makeup sponsor, the dreaded first Team Challenge, and there was a pitch-your-collection-concept twist thrown into the mix. Guess which moments were my Top 5?? Just guess. OK, if you can't...
Click below to WATCH my "Top 5 OMG Moments" of PROJECT RUNWAY Episode 5:
My "Top 5 OMG Moments" of Episode 5 "Project Runway":
#1 OMG....It's The Dreaded Team Challenge! Most everybody on "Project Runway" hates the Team Challenges. OK, maybe "hate" is too strong of a word...let's just say "doesn't look forward to"....mainly because you have to be responsible for yourself AND you also have to make sure everyone else on your team is somewhat pulling their "Design Weight"...
There are reasons why "Project Runway" includes Team Challenges on the show. While, yes in a "real" fashion business, one must be able to work on a team and collaborate, but on the show, it's really there to create more stress and possibly have some "throwing-under-the-bus-moments".
#2 OMG....Project Shark Tank! So...As part of this week's Team Challenge, the teams had to pitch their collection concept to a group of "mystery investors" who turned out to be Heidi, Nina and Zac. This was an interesting idea and most likely a way of giving an "Amuse Bouche" to a new show: "Project Runway: Fashion Start Up". The new series will showcase aspiring Fashion & Beauty entrepreneurs pitching their concepts for the chance to secure funds from a panel of investors...who, By The Way, are not Heidi, Nina or Zac!....Interesante! Will you watch??
#3 OMG....Hashtag 310 Power! The boys of room 310--Alex, Roberi and Rik might have been on the upswing after being the Top 3 from the last challenge....but unfortunately, none of that helped them from making their "Everyday Business Woman" look more like she was heading to The Club instead of the Boardroom. With the help of their other roommate Cornelius, his bestie Natalia and outsider Mah-Jing...Team Unity turned their "Power Suits" into "Party Pieces" completely missing their initial concept and landing themselves on the bottom.
#4 OMG....You're Not An Outsider To Me Mah-Jing! Team Unity might not have won this week, but outsider Mah-Jing came out on top and seemed to have a break-through with this challenge. His belted, asymmetrical, patchwork vest with cropped trousers was chic, sophisticated and "kind of" close to a working women's ensemble. Kudos to Mah-Jing...let's see if he can keep it up and get himself a win!
#5 OMG....TEAM BOUTON MVP'S! Laurence's razor sharp leather jacket and Erin's LUXE highlighter yellow and mauve coat were the true stars of the Team Bouton collection. But it was Dexter's winning pitch and his ability to race around the workroom in those wedge platforms, while helping his team, that secured him the well-deserved MVP WIN!! Congratulations Team Bouton and Congratulations Mr. Herpatology!!
And...here's my RECAP from MyLifetime.com "Project Runway" website:

Season 15, Episode 5 Recap: United We Stand
After last week’s demanding swimwear challenge, the
designers learn that it is time for the dreaded team challenge. Team challenges
are always a tricky subject on the show. I’ve said this many times during all
my seasons writing recaps here (and in addition to my own personal experience
as a contestant): it’s rare when there is designer unity on a team challenge.
But this week, there was. Did team camaraderie guarantee cohesion and success?
Well…Yes and no. Time to recap.
The episode begins with Alex discussing “310 Power,”
chitchatting about how great it is that Rik, Roberi and he are roommates and,
in addition, that they were the top three in the previous week. A quick photo
montage of a younger, more “punk-y” Alex follows. Once again, I think, “Uh oh.”
Maybe I’m really getting too savvy for the editors or the editors need to
rethink their formula, who knows.
Tim Gunn greets the designers on stage, introducing Luis
Casco, Mary Kay Global Beauty Ambassador. He is there to announce the Mary Kay
challenge, of course. Before discussing the details, Casco says that it is “all
about challenging your passion for fashion and combining it with an
entrepreneurial mindset that Mary Kay just embraces.” Right as I was about to
yell, “What the heck is he talking about?” Tim enlightens me and...

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss International 2016 National Costumes: My Top 15 Favorites: A Photo Gallery!
Costume Fab: Contestants in the "Miss International 2016" Beauty Pageant, during their National Costume Presentation in Tokyo Japan
The 56th Annual Miss International Beauty Pageant--considered one of the four most important "Grand Slam International Pageants"--besides "Miss Universe", "Miss World" and "Miss Earth". There are 70 contestants competing in the pageant, which will culminate in the Coronation Finals Night on October 27th in Tokyo Japan...
"Miss International 2016" National Costume Presentation, Tokyo Japan
Miss International Venezuela Jessica Duarte (L) and Miss International USA Kaitryana Leinbach (R) doing the "Heart" sign at the "Miss International 2016" National Costume Presentation, Tokyo Japan
The contestants have arrived and are attending some pre-contest activities. Tuesday were the Miss International 2016 National Costumes Presentation as part of an opening press preview. As usual, there were lots of sequins, feathers, Pre-Columbian Goddesses as well as "Traditional" and Folkloric costumes on display. Here are some of my Top 15 Faves:
Philippines Kylie Verzosa: Kylie's costume was outstanding! I loved her Filipiniana gold-and-nude multi-tiered gown featured those iconic "butterfly" sleeves. the costume was designed by Filipino fashion designer Francis Libiran , known for his wedding dresses and outfitting many pageant gals, including the gown worn by Catriona Gray when she was crowned "Miss World Philippines" last week.
Malaysia Olivia Nicholas: Olivia wore a very festive traditional costume that reminds me of a Busana Cik Siti Wan Kembang (Kelentan), named after the legendary Queen of the state of Kelentan. This was worn by aristocrats during the 1500's and is usually made of stiff songket material woven with golden threads. It looks very luxurious and I'm loving the sword accessory!
USA Kaitryana Leinbach: While it is predictable to be dressed as the Statue of Liberty as your costume if you are representing the United States, I still think this was done fabulously! The silver sequined mermaid-shaped gown, plus the crown and torch, all matching and all making a strong Glam Statue of Liberty impact. Well done!
Colombia Daniela Herrera: There were several of these "Pre-Columbian Goddess" costumes during the "Miss International 2016" national costume presentation and this one worn by Miss Colombia was the best. I loved the green, blue and red plumage and the gold details throughout. Those wrist feathered-and-gold "statues" are kind of fabulous. I wished she would have really finished it all off with a super incredible headdress but other than that, this was a great costume. Oh, and kudos for the gold and silver shoes that matched beautifully with the rest of the look; sometimes, these contestants forget that it is a head-to-toe look and instead, end up wearing some tacky nude platform heels that have NOTHING to do with the rest of the costume. So...Gracias Daniela!
Japan Junna Yamagata: Junna's red and white Kimono gown was sleek, modern and quite runway ready! The sharpness of the the cut exemplified the beauty of the gown and highlighted the small details such as the inset piping, padded sleeve hems and Obi ribbons.
Netherlands Melissa Scherpen: I know what you guys might be thinking: Is this really such an impacting national costume? Well, while it might not have an impressive stage presence or be filled with huge feathers and gold trimmings, I loved how some of the traditional Dutch icons such as tulips and cobalt blue of the flag were intermixed in this stretch velvet jumpsuit, down to the shoes! And how could I not love that windmill-and-bicycle headdress??!! Nothing says The Netherlands more than what's on her head.
Slovak Republic Michaela Menkyova: I've put another European here in my Top 15 favorites and while The Netherlands' costume was a fun quirky non-traditional interpretation of Dutch culture, Miss Slovak republic went full folkloric. And I liked it! I am sure that some Slovak designers might want to try and be creative and add their own unique design touches to this, but I say "Don't mess with a good thing!".
Bolivia Katherine Anazgo: Miss Bolivia's national costume combines several elements of traditional Bolivian culture in one super embellished ensemble. All that sequined applique work is pretty incredible on that high-lo dress plus the inner lace petticoat and the feathered hat and those red, yellow and green pom-pom's...it adds to an impressive costume effort for Miss Bolivia. I also appreciated the matching sequined pumps. Once again, it was a head-to-toe look.
China Xinna Zhou: Chic, model pretty, and still lovely hints of traditional Chinese culture and costume. This was a "Runway" way of doing a "National Costume" and an example that to make an impact, sometimes you don't need all those costume 'bells and whistles". Simple, elegant and still quite striking. Love the earrings and hair accessory.
Singapore Wang Hui Qi: Singapore's national flower is the orchid, so naturally, Miss Singapore's national costume incorporated this into the design. Very much so. The costume was impacting and obviously, had stage presence; how can you miss a five feet tall-and-wide orchid!!?? I also liked her feathered headdress and the fact that her sequined gown was in the same tonal color family. If I had any critique, it would be the silver pumps. This was a shoe fail. She should have gone with non-platform strappy heels in that wine/lilac color family.
Canada Amber Bernachi: Yes, she's like the Canadian version of a Victoria's Secret Angel. And I like it! I think this is fun, sexy and still kind of a "national costume" for Canada (HELLO!!! She's got a BIG OL' Maple leaf attached to her back!). I might not have chosen those knee-high white patent leather platform boots and instead worn ones possibly in the same color as the maple leaf, but other than that, I thought this was a fun "costume".
Macau Sulin Ip: At first, I was a big fan of this entire look--a red with gold thread flower detailed traditional costume. I loved the drama of it all, especially the sleeves and exaggerated stand-up shawl collar...and that headdress was also quite spectacular. This is why she ended up in my Top 15 Faves. But...WHY THOSE SHOES???? I'm sure they probably weren't meant to make an "appearance", but when they did, it was just Ticky-TACKY. However, overall, nice costume,. Just bad stripper heel shoes.
Finland Emilia Seppanen: Miss Finland's costume was one of the better ones from the European contestants just for it's sexy silhouette, fashion-like styling and still keeping elements of Finland, such as the blue and white flag colors. I also loved how the shoes were detailed in a manner to go well with the dress and her hair and makeup was "Pageant Modern".
Panama Daniela Ochoa Barragan: Panama donned a "Pre-Columbian"-inspired costume. Colombia's was much better but I wanted to include "Miss Panama" because it was--in my eyes--a nice "Top 15 Costume" effort. I liked the silver and green leaf-like motif and the SUPER-embellished boots were kind of fabuloso! I just wished (once again) that she had a big ol' headdress with like 100 silver and green feathers.
Finally, even though it's a bit of a CRAY-CRAY Mess...I still wanted to acknowledge this in my Top 15:
United Kingdom Romy Simpkins: I mean, seriously...take a good look at this. She is a mixture of an 18th Century Pub Hostess (if there were such people!) and a walking UK souvenir. Is it a mess? Totally. But is it fun and makes me smile? Double Yes. Part of me wished she would have dressed as Boris Johnson (former Mayor of London) but hey, maybe next year! I still think this is Super Gay Parade Fab.
Let me know what you guys think and if I somehow missed some of YOUR "Miss International 2016" National Costume favorites...Leave your comments below!

PROJECT RUNWAY....My TOP 5 OMG MOMENTS and RECAP of "Project Runway" Season 15 Episode 4: Swimwear!
Nick Verreos "OMG Top 5 Moments of Project Runway Episode 4" on YouTube
It's time for my weekly RECAP of Season 15 "Project Runway"! First up, it's my "Top 5 OMG Moments" of the episode. The challenge this week was to create Swimwear for the "Heidi Klum Swim" line. As always, they made a big hullabaloo about how the Winner would have their look manufactured and sold as part of Miss Heidi's line. But, they (as always) didn't mention anything about that said winning designer getting any percentage of the sold swimsuits #JustSaying. Besides that, there were definitely some things I wanted to get off my chest about this episode so...
Who Do I "Heart"?...Find out by watching video below...
Click below to watch my "Top 5 OMG Moments of Episode 4 Project Runway":
Here are my Top 5 "OMG Moments":

#1.....OMG! SWIMWEAR ISN'T EASY! This week's challenge was to create a swimsuit, cover-up and print for "Heidi Klum Swim"...

(SIDE NOTE: How many lines does Miss Heidi Have?? She's got Lingerie, Workout, Children's, Swim...What's Next? "Heidi Klum Doggie Wear"?? Oh, wait, does she already have that?!).

Anyhow...the designers all quickly learned that creating Swimwear IS NOT EASY! People think it is but HAIIIIILLLSS NO! It's all in the details: Piping, bias binding, elastic, hooks, wires, 2-way stretch, 4-way stretch, shrinking....Uuuughhh! There's a reason why a woman's swimsuit can cost $100 or more for just that little piece of fabric! It. Ain't. Easy.
#2.....OMG! JENNI! STEP AWAY FROM YOUR DESIGN! When Heidi and Tim came by the workroom for the Check-in's, Heidi made her concerns loud and clear regarding Jenni's questionable design.
She said it was a bit "older woman" and she didn't understand the cover-up. But Jenni stuck to her guns!
She may have changed the bottom--just a little bit--but for the most part, she sent down the runway the same design Heidi HATED!
Jenni suffered from what I like to call: NOT Having a Critical Eye. Every now and then, you have to STEP AWAY FROM YOUR DESIGN...Go have lunch, dinner, BREAAATHE! And then come back and see it from a more critical perspective. Jenni didn't, and the judges were not pleased.
#3.....OMG! LABIA WHUUUUT??? This episode became a lesson in the female anatomy....From HUNGRY BUTT to SCHNOOOO SLIP to CAMELTOE to LABIA SPILLAGE....It was all about the LADY PARTS. Frankly, as a Gay Man, I was like "LA LA LA LA LA!!!!" T.M.I. : Too Much Information.
#4.....OMG! THE BOTTOM THREE! There's no denying that the Bottom Three were the WORST of the bunch--Tasha's Teeny Weeny Rasta Sushi Bikini (that should be a song!), Jenni's Lavender Pant Slash Skirt cover-up Reveal and Sarah's unremarkable Junior's Creation....Lots of the designers struggled with the whole Swimwear Design Challenge but Tasha, Jenni and Sarah really SANK! The judges got it right this week anointing these three as the worst.
#5.....OMG! RIK REDEEMED! From Hoochie Stripper to Swimsuit Runway Chic....Rik is Redeemed! Now, last week, I said in my RECAP that I would have sent him home for that Ticky-Tacky creation he did for the Day-to-Blacklight Challenge, but....Thank Goodness I wasn't a judge! This week, Rik's was the Best! I loved the design and the black and white geo print was FAB! I really hope he made himself a SPEEDO out of that print! And I have one request Rik: PLEASE, post it on your Instagram! :)

Season 15, Episode 4
Recap: Sink or Swim
This week, the “Project Runway” designers found out that
creating swimwear is not easy. Most designers who have worked in the industry
know this already, but many people outside of the fashion world think it is
just the opposite: it’s only a small piece of fabric and it stretches, no need
for much construction… easy-breezy right? Not so much. There’s a reason
why swimsuits can go for $100 or more. It’s all in the minutiae and labor
involved in those precise details including binding, piping, wiring, shrinking,
and stretching fabrication. In addition, it takes at least 5-10 fittings per
garment to finalize a proper swimsuit fit. Only a small group of the designers
succeeded this week in taking the plunge into swimwear while others really sank
to the bottom! Let’s recap…

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss Venezuela 2016 Winner Keysi Sayago and EVENING GOWN RECAP!!!
Venezuelan Queen: Keysi Sayago "Miss Venezuela 2016"...and the Gowns--Miss Venezuela 2016 Beauty Pageant
This past Wednesday were the finals of one of the most important beauty pageants in the world: The Miss Venezuela 2016 Beauty Pageant . There were 24 contestants vying for the coveted crown which has had--as every pageant fanatic knows--SEVEN Miss Universe winners, SIX Miss Worlds, SEVEN Miss Internationals and TWO Miss Earths. The Miss Venezuela pageant and organization is known as a "Beauty Making Factory". The winner of Miss Venezuela 2016 was the gorgeous Keysi Sayago, who represented the state of "Monagas".
Bella Keysi: "Miss Venezuela 2016" Keysi Sayago--Miss Venezuela 2016 Beauty Pageant
The new "Miss Venezuela" just turned 23 (her birthday was yesterday on Thursday!) and stands 1.78 M (5' 10") and besides being beautiful and a model, she has a Degree in Mechanical Engineering (seriously, you can't make this stuff up!). Keysi is the talk of the country for having won the title--besides the fact that she has instantly become famous worldwide--but really for the fact that she is morena (tan skinned), and in terms of her look, she is very representative of what a true Venezuelan beauty should look like. The pageant is known for crowning blond or lighter haired/lighter skinned, European-types.
Crowning Moment: "Miss Venezuela 2015" Mariam Habach (right) crowns "Miss Venezuela 2016" Keysi Sayago--Miss Venezuela 2016 Beauty Pageant
Hair Bun Ladies: The Top Two (L to R) "Nueva Esparta" Diana Croce (First Runner-up) and "Miss Monagas" Keysi Sayago (eventual winner and new "Miss Venezuela)
Tropical Swim: "Miss Monagas" (and eventual "Miss Venezuela 2016") winner, Keysi Sayago competing in the Swimwear portion of the "Miss Venezuela 2016" Beauty Pageant
In the last few years, the "Miss Venezuela" Pageant has had to be scaled way, way, waaaay down. In the past it was held in a huge concert-size indoor amphitheater "El Poliedro", which could seat up to 20,000 people. The show was famous for its over-the-top "Who Cares What It Costs" productions. As a result of the severe economic crisis Venezuela has been going through, the pageant finals has ended up being televised from a TV studio (Estudio 1 of Venevision) with less than a hundred attendees (there were probably more people backstage working than as guests).
Model Keysi: Keysi Sayago "Miss Monagas 2016", the new "Miss Venezuela 2016"
As "Miss Venezuela 2016" she will get to represent the South American nation at the "Miss Universe 2017" pageant which (this might get confusing!), will probably not take place until 2018 (!). Last year's "Miss Venezuela" Mariam Habach has not even competed at "Miss Universe" yet and will do so NEXT YEAR, on January 30th when the pageant finals take place in Manila Philippines, according to some sources. So, yes, the lovely Keysi will probably be "chilling" for another year...and a half!...until she has to prove her worth internationally at the "Miss Universe" pageant.
Now, let's get to the important stuff: THE EVENING GOWNS!!
South American Couture: Contestants vying for the title of "Miss Venezuela 2016" during the Evening Gown portion of the beauty pageant
OK, now, let's talk about the Gowns: Venezuela has always been the benchmark for pageant gowns and the leader in setting and predicting trends for the rest of the world including the US. In my new book "A Passion For Fashion" , I talk about how, as a little boy growing up in Caracas Venezuela and even afterward when my family moved to the U.S., watching the "Miss Venezuela" pageant was like THE SUPERBOWL and Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week all rolled up into one singular fabulous moment!
Jeweled Fabulous--"Miss Venezuela" contestants in their evening gowns vying for the "Miss Venezuela 2016" title
Venezuelan Pageant designers have been the most coveted, go-to source for elite pageant gowns across the world. The most recent trend in Pageant gowns recently is "more is more". Some might say that has always been a trend when it comes to pageantry, but there has been decades in which gowns were downright subdued or minimalist compared to some of the styles we are seeing today...
No Bread? Who Cares...There's A Million Dollar Fashion Show on TV--"Miss Venezuela" contestants in their evening gowns vying for the "Miss Venezuela 2016" title
Well, this year at the "Miss Venezuela 2016" pageant, the contestants and their designers took this trend to a WHOLE NEW LEVEL! While the country is going through extremely dire circumstances and most people can't even purchase the necessities they need at the supermercado, there was absolutely NO sign of the countries struggles on display at the pageant. It is almost as if the viewer (Me!) time traveled back to the Venezuelan hey-days of the 1980's when the country was an oil rich mecca. Most venezolanos can't even buy toilet paper, feminine hygiene products or find Harina Pan (corn meal for Arepas) but somehow, these designers are able to buy extremely expensive silk gazar and thousands and thousands and thousands of Swarovski crystals. Each of these gowns could easily retail for $10,000+.
Gown Gals: "Miss Venezuela 2016" Top 5 in their Evening Gowns--Miss Venezuela 2016 Beauty Pageant
I have no idea if these very talented designers get a nice budget for making these gowns (they should!) and in addition get paid for their design and work (they should--Part Two!) but the creations are incredible--for good or "Uh Oh" as some would argue. NO ONE in Venezuela can afford one of these gowns (that class of the population has left the country, for the most part--they're either in Miami, Houston, or Madrid) so doing this for "promotion" and "press" isn't going to help them or catapult them into worldwide business success. Maybe they can get orders from US-based pageant gals! But I give them a bow for making what looks like, very well-done designs.
OK, now that I got that out of the way, time to discuss my Top Favorites. First, I want to talk about the Winner Keysi Sayago "Miss Monagas" and her gown. It was one of my favorites!
Miss Monagas 2016 Keysi Sayago: I loved this gown ensemble worn by the eventual winner, Keysi Sayago "Miss Monagas". The ivory silk crepe gown was designed by Hugo Espina and it had a hi-lo short sleeve cape. It was heavily--and beautifully--embroidered with silver sequins throughout. The only thing I didn't like were the gloves. Those were a little "Mumsy" and slightly dated. Thank goodness, she took them off after the evening gown portion.
Score: 9.5/10
The hi-lo cape by the way, reminded me of one of my NIKOLAKI gowns that I designed:
NIKOLAKI Spring 2015 Collection
Besides "Miss Monagas" gown, here are my Top 10 Favorite Gowns of the "Miss Venezuela 2016" Beauty Pageant----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Photos courtesy of MissVenezuela.com
Miss Sucre 2016 Victoria Gonzalez: This gown design by Venezuelan designer Alejandro Fajardo was probably the most impacting, chic, Haute Couture-like gown of the night. At least in my eyes. I loved this design. Yes, it was very Zuhair Murad but, it was still very impacting and perfect for the contestant. The fit was amazing and the silver Baroque-like sequins over the ziberline base was EVERYTHING. I could have done without the belt but even with that...It was still FAB:
Score: 9.8/10
Miss Bolivar 2016 Melanie Bermudez: Melanie was all things sexy in this Alejandro Fajardo designed gown featuring a heavily beaded and jeweled silver, gold and copper torso and white georgette skirt. The super high side slit showed off her fabulous legs and wasn't hoochie at all. I also LOVED that she didn't wear the same tacky UBER HIGH platform heels many of the other contestants wore. Instead she wore these very Runway perfect gold "Gladiator" style strappy heels. Muy Bien!
Score: 9.8/10
Miss Miranda 2016 Rosangelica Piscitelli: Rosangelica was one of the favorites to win the crown. She surprisingly ended up getting Fourth Runner-up but did get the "Miss Elegance" and "Miss Photogenic" titles. In terms of her gown, she was very on-trend with this caped design by Venezuelan designer Hugo Espina. The blush/nude gown featured lots of gold, silver and copper sequin applique work. It reminded me of the Ralph & Russo Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2015 in the photo above. That one is just a gorgeous golden lace over silk gazar. But neveretheless, there were strong similarities.
Score: 9.6/10
Miss Yaracuy 2016 Reneta Bello: There were A LOT of over-the-top late 80's/early 90's style gowns at this year's "Miss Venezuela 2016". I had a difficult time fighting my inner urge to say "Oh Dear! That is SOOOO 90's and over-the-top tacky-licious and "wait, that's kind of fab!". In this case, I went with the latter. This gown was designed by Nidal Nouaihed and featured a one shoulder sweetheart bustline, blue sequined and white tulle column gown, and a blue cascade ruffled back overskirt. It TOTALLY brought me back to the Guy Meliet days of the "Miss Venezuela" pageant when I was growing up and for that, I give Nouaihed points.
Score: 9.5/10
Miss Nueva Esparta 2016 Dina Croce: Diana almost got the top crown. She wore this blush/nude colored gown from Venezuelan designer Douglas Tapia. This was another one of those very 90's-like gowns featuring the sequined column gown under a voluminous silk gazar overskirt. Yes, it looked very 1994, but...it somehow still hinted at 2016 with its very fitted gown, plunging neckline and illusion/nude coloring. I liked this. Would I have wished that it wasn't sooooo plunging and that she didn't wear her hair so bouffant "Pageant Betty"? Probably. But, it was a nice impacting gown.
Score: 9.4/10
Miss Lara 2016 Hielimar Elizabeth Sargo de Marchi: When she first came out in this Nidal Nouaihed design, she had this gunmetal colored satin gathered overskirt and I was not a fan. She then quickly removed it (Thank Goodness) to reveal this stunning column-style crystal sequined gown with long sleeves and a mock turtleneck. This is is a gown a "Miss Venezuela" should wear at the next "Miss Universe"; it's simple, classic, yet impacting and stage fabulous.
Score: 9.7/10 (without the overskirt)
Miss Barinas 2016 Jelaning Betania Fragas Gonzalez: First off, I absolutely loved the deep violet color of this Honicer Sandoval and Julio Mora designed gown. The style was very early 90's with a hint of Gionni Straccia 2000's with the neckline jeweled sequined work. Jelaning looked beautiful and almost serene with all that fuss of a gown. Personally, I would have removed all the cascading volants in the back and just left it alone without it. But leave it to these Venezuelan designers to always go with the "More is More" design mantra...
She reminded me of Marelisa Gibson "Miss Venezuela 2009"(top photo) and Carolina Izsak "Miss Venezuela 1991" (lower photo). Overall, I give her and her gown...
Score: 9.3/10
Miss Tachira 2016 Betania Rojas Rincon: "Miss Tachira's" gown was designed by Dheymid Galaviz and was "Oriental"-inspired containing 10,000+ crystals and pearls. The gown was impacting, fit her well and looked beautiful against her olive complexion and dark hair. The mixture of sequin applique and the fabric was very on-trend with what's happening in pageant gowns. But, once again, these "Miss Venezuela" designers take that trend and add some major "design and crystal Botox" to them!
Score: 9.4/10
Miss Zulia 2016 Raymar Lisett Valbuena Cardozo: OK, I know this might be a bit of a controversial one, in terms of placing her as one of my "Top 10 Best" list here, mainly because it is A LOT of gown. Even by Mucho standards, it's still MUCHISIMO! This Top of a Wedding Cake Couture creation was designed by Nidal Nouaihed, who seems to be really going back to the heydays of "Miss Venezuela" and the Guy Meliet/Angel Sanchez time when the pageant showcased some over-the-top Haute Couture designs making the pageant a must-see fashion show of the year. This design almost made me nostalgic for those times (especially since back then, one could find bread and tampons in the supermarket, Thank You very much!). Even though it is Super Muchee, it's made marvelously, one cannot deny it makes an impression and well, I get the cascading overskirt for stage drama, but I would definitely remove that if this gown were ever to see the "Miss World" or "Miss Universe" stage.
Score: 9.0/10
Finally...
Miss Amazonas 2016 Anjuly Claret De Gouveia Rodriguez: This last one in my "Bueno" group could also be controversial. Mainly because when "Miss Amazonas" first walked out, she looked as if a BIG PINK FEATHERED BIRD (or ancient Dinosaur!)n had SWALLOWED HER:
Ayyyyy Dios Mio!!!!--"Miss Amazonas" makes her entrance during the "Miss Venezuela 2016" Evening Gown portion
But, thank goodness, she took it off:
Many on the internet where making fun of the feathered-coat entrance, suggesting some of these "Miss Venezuela" contestant and their designers are taking too many Fashion Drugs! Anyhow, she thankfully removed that feathered mess (someone should just dump it in the trash behind the Venevision studios!) and revealed what I thought was a stunning sequined column gown. The Alejandro Fajardo design featured small cap sleeves, plunging neckline and center front slit. I appreciated the simple clean line and well, all the sequin work was RIDICULOUS! The Chanel Haute Couture petite mains back in Paris should take a flight to Caracas and give whoever hand-sewed these on, a job back in Paris. The gown was very impacting, to put it lightly.
Score (DEFINITELY without the feathered cape!): 9.5/10....With the Cape: 2.0/10
Top Six Uh Oh-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Miss Vargas 2016 Paola Antonella Massalo Escalona: At first, I was intrigued by this Alejandro Fajardo "mermaid"-shaped design. The gown was done in off-white silk gazar and featured hand-painted floral detail with sequins strewn on top of the bottom section. The top section had a geometrically shaped neckline, scooped sleeves and the back (I wish i had a photo of that!) scooped all the way down to 1/4" away from her bootie (yikes!). When she turned around to show that, I was like "Oh No!". To be frank, while I am sure close up, all that bottom sequin and hand painted work was amazing, it looked like a crime scene on camera. I wish they would have started higher and had it more delicately ombre down to the bottom. Finally, the entire time I was looking at the gown, I kept thinking "I've seen this before!"...well...
Stephane Rolland Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2012--Yep! That's it! It's a little crazy how similar the Alejandro Fajardo gown is to this one above from Paris Couturier Stephane Rolland. Really spooky. Even with the feathers at the bottom, I still like the Rolland one more. But seriously, I wonder if Osmel Sousa (the "Miss Venezuela" pageant director showed this photo to Fajardo and said "I want this!" Anyhow...
Score (of "Miss Vargas" gown): 7.7/10
Miss Falcon 2016 Tulia Rosa Maria Aleman Ferrer: This white silk crepe column gown was designed by Venezuelan designer Valentina Cedeno. It featured a very interesting geometric neckline mimicking almost a skyline of sorts. I appreciated the complexity of the neckline design (trying to get those squared off perfectly is a sewing/construction NIGHTMARE!) but because of how low it was cut in the torso, I was afraid of boobie (or nipple) spillage the entire time. This gown can be saved if they just extend those neckline rectangles just a little bit higher. But overall, it was more "Uh Oh" than "Oh wow!" to me.
Score: 8.0/10
Miss Carabobo 2016 Frinddy Bocaranda: Oh Frinddy! What Mardi Gras carnival float are you riding in with this get-up??!! This emerald green colored gown featured jeweled sequins down the front, an iridescent overlay, nude illusion bodice and naturally, if that wasn't enough, there was a tiered back overskirt. This was a Ticky-Tacky, Figure Skating Costume Meets Carnival Hot Mess.
Score: 5.5/10
Miss Cojedes 2016 Sarahim Sariht Davila Hernandez: This silk gazar and georgette gown was designed by Luis Perdomo. The "Valentino red" colored gown featured matching red plumage on the neckline. This wasn't a bad gown by any means; it was clean, elegant in it's own way. But it was just rather dated and Mother-of-the-Bride. If I saw this gown at a runway show in 1998, I would have "Ooooh'ed" and "Ahhh'ed", it is after all, very vintage Valentino looking. But in 2016, it was slightly "mature".
Score: 8.0/10
Miss Potuguesa 2016 Viviana Valente Rueda: OK, what is with all the feathers at this year's "Miss Venezuela" evening gown competition?? This design--worn by "Miss Portuguesa" took the "Feather Cake" among all the other feathered concoctions. The red silk ziberline gown was designed by Honicer Sandoval and--besides the feathers--featured red and silver crystals throughout and a key-hole neckline. If the feathers at the bottom weren't enough, she had a feather shawl! And then she topped it all off with gaudy makeup, a "Pageant Betty" bouffant hair and over-the-top earrings. She looked like a cabaret dancer at Folies Bergere. Très Tacky.
Score: 6.5/10
Finally...speaking of Mardi Gras and Folies Bergere...
Miss Distrito Capital Yanett Margarita Diaz Dib: There were A LOT of Too Mucheee gowns at this year's "Miss Venezuela" and one could argue that maybe lots of them were a mess (I kinda liked some of them!), but this one I just couldn't even begin to explain. The design was by Venezuelan couturier Raenrra and featured a pink and silver sequined column gown with heavily appliqued bodice and then, a very over-the-top multi-multi-MULTI ruffled and tiered back overskirt. That overskirt alone could be used as a major flotation device. And I can only imagine the hours upon hours of work to sew that (Ayyy Dios Mio!). The gown itself wasn't so bad (OK, it was Showgirl tacky!), but in combination with the overskirt...she looked like a Drag Queen on a float in Rio in 1995. Really Too Mucheee.
Score: 5.8/10
If there was anything nice to say, it's that the color and "essence" kind of reminded me of this:
Irene Saez Conde "Miss Universe 1981"
Final Thoughts: I was really struck--as I said in the beginning of this post--by the over-the-top "More Is More" feeling that permeated into almost each and every evening gown at this year's "Miss Venezuela". The pageant has always been known for its gowns and being on the so-called cutting edge of Pageant Fashion but this year--especially with the dire economic situation in Venezuela--it almost seemed like an "F You!" to anyone expecting to see a more low-rent downsized gown parade.
But at the same time, there was a definite disconnect to what is really happening outside of those Venevision studios and I wonder if anyone in the country may have felt offended at the ostentatious display of super expensive fabrics, sequins, over-the-top-ness of those gowns. Or, maybe this is what the population needed, for just one night at least: A show of "Who cares what's happening outside, let's just pretend like it's 1985!!!". Also, I hope it can show a glimmer of hope and fabulousness to little boys and girls who love fashion and maybe want to be fashion designers ("Miss Venezuela" definitely inspired me!). And with that I bid...
Congratulations to the new "Miss Venezuela 2016" Keysi Sayago and her court of beautiful women. She now has over a year to prepare and to figure out what gown to wear for the "Miss Universe" whenever that will happen in 2018. Hopefully by then, Venezuela will be in a much better economic situation, for which all its people deserve.
*****Felicitaciones Keysi Sayago "Miss Venezuela 2016"*****

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss World Philippines 2016 Finals EVENING GOWN RECAP: My Top Faves + Uh Oh List!
Satins and Sashes: The new "Miss World Philippines" Catriona Gray (Center and Top Photos) and some of my favorite gowns--Miss World Philippines 2016
Last night was the Finals of "Miss World Philippines 2016" held in the Manila Hotel, Manila Philippines. This was the 6th edition of the beauty pageant and the winner was Filipina-Australian 5' 10"(1.78 M) tall Catriona Elisa Magnayon Gray. The 22 year-old Catriona was born in Australia to an Australian father and Filipina mother and has a Master Certificate in Music Theory from the Berklee College of Music in Boston...
Crowned: "Miss World Philippines 2016" Catriona Gray
She is a well known TV host, top model and singer. The gorgeous Catriona was a favorite to win the "Miss World Philippines" title and in fact, besides getting the top crown, she also bagged several special awards including Best in Swimsuit, Best in Long Gown and the Fashion Runway Award.

The new "Miss World Philippines" Catriona Gray will now prepare to go represent her nation in the "Miss World 2016" Finals, to be held in Washington D.C. on December 18th and compete with almost 100 other contestants from all over the world. She may have just won last night but already, pageant watchers are seeing her as a strong contender for that coveted international beauty pageant crown.

And now, let's get to the important stuff: THE EVENING GOWNS!!!
Here are my Top Fave Picks for Gowns of the "Miss World Philippines 2016" pageant plus some Not-So Favorites. I'll start with the eventual winner, "No. 13" Catriona Gray:
Photos courtesy of OPMB Worldwide Facebook
Catriona Gray: Catriona--the eventual winner--wore a wine colored taffeta and tulle gown for the evening Gown competition. The gown featured an off-the-shoulder design with peplum accents and a tulle and sequined applique overskirt. It was nice and regal-like but I wished it was just a bit more Runway Fab and sexy. I do get that it is all about creating that "Miss World image" and therefore, trying to make her look more Sweet as opposed to Paris Fashion Week Runway, but I felt the gown was slightly Mumsy...for Catriona. It also really annoyed me when I saw those nude colored platform heels poking through from underneath. WHY THOSE and that color??? #ShoeFail...But she did win "Best in Long Gown" (shows you how much I know!) and I give her points of how she worked it on stage!
8.9/10
So...besides Catriona's gown, Here is My List of "Good Gowns" Top 10------------------------------
(Photos courtesy of OPMB Worldwide Facebook and Rappler.com)
No. 16 Roshiel Asingua: This was one of my favorite gowns of the night on contestant No. 16. Roshiel Asingua. The strapless gown was beautiful, fit her nicely and looked well made. I loved the sequined jeweled work at the torso and gathered, light blue tulle overlay and the hint of the sparkly under-gown peeking through. I also thought the styling--her slicked back hair and great earrings finished it off well.
9.3/10
No. 12 Arah Alvero Salientes: I loved this emerald green taffeta gown worn by contestant No. 12 Arah Salientes. The gown was very dramatic and I especially appreciated the asymmetric, off-the-shoulder neckline and super fab pleating and draping. Quite fabulous indeed!
9.4/10
No. 17 Irina Garcia Cortez: Irina exuded "Diva" in this strawberry red off the shoulder gown in an iridescent zibeline-like satin "mermaid" style gown. The gown looked impressive and really commanded stage presence. It also fit her perfectly. And the Diva award Goes To...No. 17!
9.3/10
No. 18 Ivanna Kamil Suficiencia Pacis: Simple, elegant, beautiful. This is how one does Classic Chic. The pale blue crepe gown fit her beautifully, exuded elegance and refinement and it was a lesson proving that one doesn't need to add "Everything AND the Sequin Applique-Side Slit-Tulle Overskirt Kitchen Sink" to make a statement.
9.3/10
No. 11 Shaina Lalaine Borreo Sazon: Shaina wore a fabulous gown during the Finals. Her ivory colored dress featured a very of-now fluttery capelet, nude illusion with sequin applique front top section and a princess seam slit. Of all the gowns, this one was one of the only ones that had a look of something seen on the international catwalks and/or red carpet. If I had one critique, it would be the length in the front: it was too short. Ladies: Long gowns end at (at the most) 1/2" above the floor...NOT SIX INCHES!!!
8.9/10
No. 8 Sandra Raymundo Lemonon: Sandra's gown was also one of the better ones of the pageant. She wore a teal fit-flare "mermaid" style gown with sequin applique leaf details in the torso and sleeves. The color was nice and she looked both "Pageant right" and sexy at the same time.
9.0/10
No. 22 Jane Cerrano Pectoranan: Jane looked quite "Miss World" sweet in this strapless ivory "mermaid" silhouette gown. The dress--while quite simple--still looked elegant and expensive. I appreciate the delicate applique details that were nicely scattered throughout the gown. This is one of those gown that I am sure did not illicit "Ooh's and Aah's" on stage but close up, might take your fashion breath away!
9.0/10
No. 15 Charlene Verzosa Fontanilla: Sweet and pretty are two words to describe this strapless gown worn by No. 15 Charlene Verzosa Fontanilla. The Tiffany Blue color was nice as well as the ivory scroll-like applique. It fit her well and (Thank Goodness), the length was TO THE FLOOR!
8.7/10
No. 10 Kristine Reyes Lopez: There's a lot going on in this gown but it still works for me and therefore I placed in my Top Ten Faves. The blue satin gown featured sequined applique (of course!), a tulle overskirt, nude illusion and if that wasn't enough...a side princess seam slit. But, like I said, all of it somehow made harmony. I think it helped that Kristine didn't do a "Pageant Betty" hair and kept it slick and modern.
8.5/10
No. 5 Arienne Louise Braga Calingo: Arienne almost became the winner as she captured the "1st Princess" crown. She wore this raspberry colored fit-to-flare gown with silver crystal detail and nude front panel. I liked this dress but I admit, she barely made my Top Ten here. It was a nice gown, but basically, just that: nice. One could probably find this is a Pageant Gown Shop anywhere and didn't really scream "unique" or Couture Fab. But it was OK enough to make my list here. Barely.
8.2/10
Top 5 "Uh Oh" Gowns---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No. 9 Jan Helen Villanueva: Two words: Oh Dear! OK, let me start with the good: I liked the bright canary yellow color of this gown and liked the semi-one-shoulder neckline but after that, it all went No-No. The gathering at the bust looks bulky, the sequin applique looks cheap--and also heavy. And then WHAT IS THAT IN FRONT OF HER CROTCH!!!?? Who in their right fashion design mind would place a pointed sequin applique THERE??? It's like a big sign saying "Hey! Take a look at my Cha-Cha!!!" nope. I won't. But on a good note, she's SO DARN CUTE!!!!
6.8/10
No. 14 Madeleine Iya Gabrella Magdaleno Uy: Madeleine's gown ended in my "Uh Oh" List for several reasons. I wasn't a fan of the Medieval look to the applique design, and then, if you notice in the above photo, the off-the-shoulder placements were causing "boob fat" on her and I am sure this lovely woman doesn't even HAVE body fat! And I know this has nothing to do with the gown design but I just wasn't a fan of her hair; it was too "Pageant Betty" Meets Mother-of-the-Bride.
7.7/10
No. 1 Maria Paula Adda Espera Prose: Maria Paula's rose pink gown was an "Uh Oh" for just being too busy. In particular, I thought all that sequin and applique work lacked rhyme or reason, to be honest. It's as if the job was given to a thirteen year old with a glue gun (sorry thirteen year old's!). And those jeweled crystals down the front were an afterthought; it's as if someone said "Oh, we have these big ol' crystals and we should just use them!". No.
7.6/10
No. 4 Alyanna Cagadahan: Oh Alyanna. I get where she (and her designer) were going with this. They were probably trying to give a Zuhair Murad/Elie Saab Moment. But it just ended up looking cheap. This gown lacked refinement, elegance; heck, it didn't even look sexy. While that nude garment was trying to give the illusion of being naked under the gown, that ended up being a huge fail as it can be clearly seen peeking out from her armpit area. Yikes!
7.0/10
And my last "Uh Oh" Gown of the night...
No. 23 Ralph Lauren Hernandez Asuncion: In case you thought I made a typo error, I didn't: Yes, her name IS RALPH LAUREN! I just about lost it when I saw that! You gotta give points to her parents for A)Loving Fashion and B) Naming their daughter after a fashion designer. Now, onto her choice of gown: I wasn't a fan. Ralph Lauren (!) wore this red off the shoulder design that featured ruffles, a slit and a sequined under-dress. It's Too Mucheey and very Cha-Cha. All she is missing is a headdress made out of bananas and palm trees and she could transform it into a Carmen Miranda Halloween costume.
6.8/10
Bouquets and Crowns: Catriona Gray "Miss World Philippinees 2016" and her court
Big Congratulations to the new "Miss World Philippines" and Best of Luck at the upcoming "Miss World 2016" pageant in Washington D.C. !!!

Creating a day-to-night look can be a difficult task for any
fashion designer. Sometimes, it’s an accessory that does the trick, while other
times, it can be an entire outfit that by virtue of its design, silhouette and
fabrication, makes it right for 2 pm as well as 8 pm. This week, “Project
Runway” challenged the remaining designers with such a task of creating a
day-to-night look, but with a twist…
As the designers gather to take their seats next to the
runway stage, Heidi and Tim suddenly yank on supersized light switch. In a
split second, the runway goes from day to blacklight and neon-like colors are
revealed on our hosting duo. Just as some of the designers were asking
themselves if they are designing outfits for a 90’s rave club, La Klum and El
Gunn shut any utterances of ecstasy by announcing what the actual challenge is.
Tim tells the designers that “Project Runway” wants to take the concept of
day-to-night dressing to another level. The challenge is to create an outfit
that can transition from daylight to blacklight. The design should initially be
“daytime appropriate” in regular light, but once the UV light is turned on,
it’s a completely different story.
The designers head to the workroom which has been outfitted
with special supplies such as puffy paints, flashlights and ultraviolet
reactive materials, as well as a separate blacklight room. Tim greets the
designers...
