ICE STYLE.....2016 Skate Canada International: LADIES and MEN!

Ladies Fab: Ladies Figure Skating Costumes from 2016 Skate Canada International
Le Men: Men's Figure Skating Costumes from 2016 Skate Canada International
This past weekend was the second of six events in the 2016-2017 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating competitions, 2016 Skate Canada International. In case you missed my "Ice Style" blog on 2016 Skate America, click HERE and HERE. This year's Skate Canada International occurred at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga Ontario Canada.
I didn't go but...I was excited to see that it was in Mississauga because I had been there before since that is where Canada's "The Shopping Channel" is headquartered and I had the privilege of being there for my "NV Nick Verreos" clothing line. So...Yeayyy for Mississauga! Now, time to discuss the Figure Skating Costumes Highlights. Let's start with the Ladies:
LADIES---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Evgenia Medvedeva of Russia Short Program River Flows in You by Lorenzo de Luca, The Winter by Balmorhea: Evgenia wore this blue ombre-shaded costume featuring crystal and blue beading in the top section. The design made her look like she was a beautiful sea creature from the Mediterranean but the costume itself looked cheap and almost Junior-like.
Evgenia Medvedeva of Russia Free Skate to Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, and Piano Lesson with Grandma by Alexandre Desplat: It's not every day one sees a top ladies' singles figure skater wearing a dress this long as her costume. This design had purple-to-lilac ombre shading and an Empire-waist look that featured sequin embroidery. There was almost a Medieval/Game of Thrones look to it and I liked it.
Satoko Miyahara of Japan Short Program Musetta's Waltz Song by Giacomo Puccini: This was a very pretty costume for Miyahara. I liked the powder blue and green colors and beaded applique. This looked like an expensive high-end figure skating costume that was impacting from afar and close up.
Satoko Miyahara of Japan Free Skate to The Planets by Gustav Holst: I LOVED this costume! So far, it is one of my favorites of the season! I absolutely adore the Grecian Goddess draping, the stark ivory color and beautiful sequin detail. I also like her crystal double headband. She looks chic, and Figure Skating Red Carpet Ready!
Kaytlyn Osmond of Canada Short Program Sous le ciel de Paris and Milord performed by Edith Piaf: I thought this design was a nice choice considering her music. The neck-tie purple costume with sequin applique midriff was "Parisian" in its flair (reminded me of the iconic Yves Saint Laurent pussy-bow sheer chiffon blouse) and while, I am normally not a fan of the gloves, I think they were correct in this look.
Mirai Nagasu USA Short Program to Nocturne No. 20 in C Sharp Minor by Frederic Chopin: Mirai wore this purple costume for her SP. I liked it! Mirai always wears costumes that I appreciate and admire. The color and beading reminded me of this Gionni Straccia-designed gown worn by...
"Miss Venezuela 2009" Marelisa Gibson
Mirai Nagasu of USA Free Skate to The Winner Takes It All performed by Sarah Dawn Finer: This was another very pretty costume from Mirai. It was very "Ice Queen" with the white color and delicate crystal beading. I especially loved the neckline and asymmetrically-placed sequins.
Rika Hongo of Japan Short Program to O Fortuna (from "Carmina Burana") by Carl Orff: This was a fun and bold costume. Rika is kind of known for her costumes and this was not a disappointment for the 2016-2017 season. I loved the multi-colored jewels at the bust and fire-like detail in the costume.
Rika Hongo of Japan Free Skate to Lawrence of Arabia (soundtrack) by Maurice Jarre: Rika really made me happy with this "Near East Diva" costume referencing her "Lawrence of Arabia" music. I. Loved. It. She looked like a sexy Sheikha of Arabia! I also appreciated her crystal crown and arm and hand sequined details of the costume.
Elizaveta Tuktamysheva of Russia Free Skate to Cleopatra (soundtrack) by Alex North: The Middle East was in the "Costume Air" as Russia Elizaveta Tuktamysheva wore this for her "Cleopatra" free skate. I felt all the accessories made the costume a bit too "Halloween-y", but I did LOVE that snake armband! The gold beaded neckline was beautiful and unique and overall the costume was quite sexy with it's sheer and short skirt.
MEN-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Patrick Chan of Canada Short Program to Dear Prudence and Blackbird by The Beatles: Patrick Chan is not known for his costumes, and more for his fabulous skating. For his SP, he wore this all-black look skating to The Beatles. Normally, I don't like when male figure skaters just wear the black pant-and-shirt look, and I've referenced it as being a bit too "Ross Dress For Less". I think that here, this ensemble worked. I liked the short sleeved shirt, the suspenders and natural-waist trousers style. Part of me wished the suspenders were sequined--at least in matte black crystals!--but yeah, I know--it's Patrick Chan, sequins are not always his thang.
Patrick Chan of Canada Free Skate to A Journey by Eric Radford: For his FS, Chan skated to music by Pairs figure skater Eric Radford. I loved this costume on Patrick. It was clean, elegant and slightly sexy. My favorite parts were the details: the pants outseam "Tuxedo" stripe and back pants yoke--in faux leather. Those detail really made the costume for me!
Kevin Reynolds of Canada Short Program to Puutarhautuminen and Muuttosarja by Hohka,
Kesäillan Tvist by Troka: Canadian Kevin Reynolds skated his SP to Finnish folk-like music and he wore a costume inspired by a traditional Finnish men's outfit--the "Hameen Men's Suit". I liked the bold stripes and red-and-black colors but I was a little annoyed at how wide the shoulders were; the vest seemed to be cut too wide. I wonder if the costume designers did that to make the super-skinny Kevin look a bit more broad shouldered? I have no idea. But, as a fashion designer and someone who worked as a pattern-maker for many years, all I wanted to do was take about 1 1/2" off the shoulder of that vest; it was that annoying to me!
Kevin Reynolds of Canada Free Skate to Grand Piano (soundtrack) by Victor Reyes: Kevin loves a double-breasted vest. He wore one for his SP and now for his Free Skate. This look was a bit "Happy Hands at Home Sewer"-looking and once again, the vest pattern's shoulder measurement was too wide. I understand the costume designers wanting to make him look a bit more muscular through costuming tricks but, my advice would just be to emphasize how lean and super skinny he is. There is really no avoiding it.
Alexander Petrov Russia Short Program Ritual Dance of Fire (from "El Amor Brujo") by Manuel de Falla: Fiery, bold and nicely done. I liked this costume worn by Russian Alexander Petrov. He looked very "Gypsy" and Andalusian in this design, especially with the gold embroidered top, red waist sash and black faux leather pants.
Alexander Petrov of Russia Free Skate to Chicago and I'm Gonna Live Till I Die by Frank Sinatra: If there was a Frank Sinatra-themed show on a cruise ship--or Las Vegas--this would be a costume in the show! I liked the kind of cheesy aspect of the look--with the gold lame jacket, piano-inspired tie and crystal belt.
Ross Miner of USA Short Program to New York State of Mind by Billy Joel: OK, I know that Ross is skating to Billy Joel and "New York State of Mind" and therefore, there's not much of a costume that can accompany that. But...this was THE DEFINITION of my dreaded "Ross Dress For Less" costume; the bland dress shirt, black pants, off-the-rack department store belt...I am so bored with his costume that I don't even want to visit New York, if this is what that city represents, fashion-wise.
Ross Miner of USA Free Skate to Somebody to Love, Love of my Life, and Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen: For his FS, he slightly redeemed himself--costume-wise. I liked the ombre-shaded red-and-black printed top with the gold sequined neckline. This was Ross Miner really stepping out of his costume zone. And I applaud him for it. But, I still think this could have been better; it is QUEEN after all!
Takahito Mura of Japan Short Program to Zapateado (Flamenco): Takahito skated to a flamenco-inspired program and I was thankful that the costume wasn't black and red. I liked the ruffled cuffs but overall, it was a bit of a Spain mish-mash. I really think what annoyed me the most was the white lace shirt; it was just a tad too cheap-looking. And that fringed front trim looked like an afterthought.
Misha Ge Uzbekistan Free Skate to The Nutcracker by Petr I. Tchaikovski: Misha gave you "Nutcracker Prince" with this white with gold beaded trimmed top and black pants costume. I think he could have gone a little more Couture with this look; it just seemed a bit "Hollywood Blvd" Costume version. I know that Misha can give me more!
Daniel Samohin of Israel Free Skate to The Illusionist by Maxime Rodriguez: Daniel skated his FS to this very impacting costume. The black pants-and multi-colored sequined top was two minutes away from looking slightly "Cirque du Soleil" but...I kinda liked it! That top, especially, looked well-made, expensive and made me want MORE!
Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan Short Program to Let's Go Crazy by Prince: At first, when Yuzuru came out, I was like "What the Heck!!??" and then, the Prince music came on and I was like "Done and done!". Hanyu wore a jumpsuit that resembled a white shirt and pants outfit with a multi-colored embroidered vest with black, white and purple being the dominant colors. There was also a nice "Prince"-inspired detail on his pants. The whole look was right for the program and 80's cool enough to make fashion fans happy.
Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan Free Skate to Hope and Legacy by Jo Hisaishi: For his FS, Yuzuru wore this ensemble of black stretch velvet pants with a multicolored green, creme, royal blue and black chiffon top. It was VERY Yuzuru for sure; he does love multicolored ombre-ing and cascading ruffle detail. I'm going to be honest here: If it wasn't Yuzuru Hanyu, I might be critiquing it and saying it's tacky and soooo 80's. But, because it is him, I actually think it works. Somehow with his height and beautiful skating, he is able to pull this off. What do you guys think? Do you like???

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss Earth 2016 Finals: EVENING GOWNS RECAP!
Earthly Gowns: "Miss Earth 2016" Finals Evening Gowns--"Miss Earth 2016" Crowning Night Finals, Manila Philippines
Last night were the Finals of one of the top international beauty pageants (I know! There have been several this past week--including "Miss Grand International 2016" and "Miss International 2016"), the "Miss Earth 2016" contest. What differentiates this pageant from the rest is it's environmental theme and its winner spending the year promoting global issues and specifically, environmental ones...
Ecuador Win: "Miss Earth Ecuador" is the new "Miss Earth 2016"--Manila Philippines
The winner of this year's "Miss Earth" was "Miss Earth Ecuador", Katherine Espin Gomez. Katherine is 23 years-old and stands 5' 9" (1. 76 M). She competed against 82 (wow!) delegates from all over the word, including representatives from Iraq and Palestine.
Top Four: (L to R) "Miss Fire" Bruna Zanardo from Brazil; Winner, Katherine Espin "Miss Ecuador"; "Miss Air" Michelle Gomez from Colombia; "Miss Water" Stephanie de Zorzi from Venezuela
Katherine Espin "Miss Earth Ecuador" is "Miss Earth 2016"
Ecuador Costume: Katherine Espin Gomez "Miss Earth Ecuador" in her national costume during the "Miss Earth 2016" National Costume Presentation
Gown Gals: "Miss Earth 2016" Semi-Finalists in their Evening Gowns--"Miss Earth 2016" Crowning Night Finals, Manila Philippines
Time for the EVENING GOWNS!!! So....as you know I love discussing the EVENING GOWNS of these International pageants and well, now it's time to give my "Nick Two Cents" on the "Miss Earth 2016" Finalists' Gowns:
Some photos courtesy of Rappler.com and Missosology Facebook
Let's begin with the eventual Winner--"Miss Earth Ecuador":
Miss Ecuador Katherine Espin: Katherine wore a canary yellow gown which featured a sequined fit-to-flare style with chiffon falls as well as nude illusion side torso insets. I wish those side nude insets had not been there and the entire gown was paillette covered, but other than that, it was quite an impacting gown and she did make a dramatic evening gown entrance. She was one of the favorites to win the contest and she delivered with this gown.
Score: 9.00
Miss Colombia Michelle Gomez: First Runner-up Michelle Gomez wore this lilac and silver-hued beaded gown. The style featured ivory embroidered embellishment at the top section. It fit perfectly, was the correct length and worked for her. Muy bien!
Score: 9.05
Miss Venezuela Stephanie de Zorzi: Venezuela's Stephanie de Zorzi was probably one of the prettiest contestants in the pageant. Her face was GORGEOUS! Like "Hollywood" star gorgeous. She wore this red gown from Venezuelan Pageant-and-Wedding designer Dheymid Laim Galaviz. The red organza gown had incredible sequined jeweled detail (as seen in the above photo) as well as red horsehair trim. It was beautifully made and worked perfectly with Stephanie's red-ish hair. There was one teeny aspect of the gown that I had a problem with:
The slit was SOOOOO HIGH that well, you could see her CHA-CHA (see photo above), or at least, her nude underwear covering her cha-cha. This was really distracting from such a pretty gown. I just cannot understand how anybody in Stephanie's "Pageant Team" didn't catch this. Ayyyy Dios Mio! It really brought my score down...
Score: 8.90
Miss Brazil Bruna Zanardo: I loved Bruna's acid green gown. The design was very Couture and featured multi-pleating and draping that hugged the body and then cascaded down the back of the gown. Superb.
Score: 9.30
Miss Russia Aleksandra Cherepanova: Aleksandra was probably one of the most beautiful contestants--next to Venezuela. She was tall, model-pretty and she chose a stunningly elegant gown that was simple, classic yet still impacting. No sequins, no slit, nothing tacky. Just Classic and Chic. If only she had worn strappy black heels.
Score: 9.55
Miss Sweden Cloie Skarne: Cloie looked like Swedish royalty in this royal blue strapless ballgown. The design featured silver embroidery down the front of the "base" gown, as well as an overskirt. Her elegant hair and clean makeup finished off this wonderful look.
Score: 9.35
Miss USA Corrin Stellakis: Corrin wore this halter-style powder pink gown with a front keyhole detail, center front slit and delicate sequins throughout. She looked nice but the style was a bit 1996 in its design and I wished she had done something more modern and less "Pageant Betty" with her hair; she's so pretty but all I kept thinking was how she looked like she was a contestant vying for "Miss Arkansas" and not the USA representative for "Miss Earth". Just sayin'.
Score: 8.00
Miss Vietnam Nguyen Thi Le Nam Em: I really liked this chartreuse-colored gown worn by "Miss Earth Vietnam". The color was just right for the "Miss Earth" pageant and it was made beautifully. I am normally not a fan if the iridescent fabrication but here, it worked. It also fit like a glove! This was one of the better gowns of "Miss Earth 2016" Finals.
Score: 9.15
Miss Australia Lyndl Kean: Lyndl wore this royal blue "Mikado" mermaid shaped gown with a sequined waist. The design is an off-the-rack Jovani Prom and if you want to order it, it's Style #28124. This gown is only $640. I just cannot understand how one can manufacture a gown like this for that low of a price. I've said this before but I'm guessing it's polyester and made in China. While I am not a fan of that sweetheart neckline and illusion inset, the dress fit her nicely and looked like it cost her much more than $640.
Score: 8.75
Miss England Luissa Burton: Luissa wore this powder blur tulle and sequin applique gown. It was a cross between a tacky "Figure Skating Costume" and a Too-Sexy Mother-of-the-bride dress. The bust section seemed too overwhelming and then she styled it with that 2003-looking hairstyle and to make things worse...those darn tacky nude platform pumps!
Score: 7.99
Miss Italy Denise Frigo: Denise seemed like a lot of fun as she was doing her "Evening Gown Competition" walk at "Miss Earth 2016" Finals. She wore this hunter green sequined gown with a very high center front slit, keyhole front and crystal waist detail. I thought it was bit late 70's Disco Fab but the slit was too high and her hairstyle (especially with the curl wispies), too dated. I did love the ankle-strap gold heels.
Score: 8.10
Miss Korea Chae-Yeung Lee: One of the prettiest "Miss Koreas" in recent memory for sure and, while I liked the lipstick red color of her chiffon draped gown, I didn't like her accessories. The necklace and earrings were a bit "Tacky Prom" and the dress itself just wasn't impacting enough for such an important International Beauty Pageant stage.
Score: 8.10
Miss Macau Clover Zhou: Clover wore this chartreuse (popular color!) ballgown for the "Miss Earth 2016' Finals. The gown was unusual and impacting on stage but there was no need to have that iridescent tulle/organza back train (what the heck was that?) and the hem was--for a lack of a better word--"bunching"--as you can see in the photo above. And--just like "Miss Korea"--there was no need for her to accessorize it with a necklace and earrings. Can you say "Too Mucheey"??!!
Score: 7.99
Miss Mexico Itzel Astudillo: Oh Itzel! This was a Mess. Plain and simple. It was soooo Tacky-licious Showgirl and then that slit was dangerously too close to her "Cha-Cha". And to add insult to Gown Injury, her "sisters" looked a bit too "done". Where does one focus? I have no idea. On a good note: I liked the sequins and color of the gown.
Score: 6.00
Miss Northern Ireland Julieann McStravick: I liked this silver sequined column gown worn by "Miss Earth Northern Ireland". It was a simple silhouette and looked elegant. There was nothing extraordinary about this and generally, it was a nice, safe choice.
Score: 8.99
Miss South Africa Nozipho Magagula: I liked the color of Nozipho's gown but after that, she lost me. This look was a tad cheap-looking and off-the-rack. The fabric looked like it came from Downtown L.A. Santee Alley and it was too short where you could see her super tacky sequined platform pumps (right photo above). This gown choice was a miss, and a shame, for such a pretty contestant.
Score: 6.00
CONGRATULATIONS to the new "Miss Earth 2016" Ecuador's Katherine Espin Gomez (second from left)!!!

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss International 2016 Finals EVENING GOWN RECAP!
International Queen: "Miss International Philippines" Kylie Verzosa wins "Miss International 2016" title, and Evening Gowns--Miss International 2016 Finals Tokyo Japan
This week has been a busy week in the world of Beauty pageants. First, there were the Finals of "Miss Grand International 2016" in Las Vegas and on Thursday, the 56th Annual "Miss International 2016" took place at the Tokyo Dome City Hall in Tokyo Japan. 69 contestants from all the world competed and the winner was Kylie Verzosa "Miss International Philippines" .
Crowned: Outgoing "Miss International 2015" Edymar Martinez from Venezuela crowns the new "Miss International 2016" Kylie Verzosa--Tokyo Japan
Kylie--who was one of the favorites, is 24 years-old, stands 5' 9" (1.75 M) and besides modeling and being a beauty pageant winner, also works as a pre-school teacher. The gorgeous beauty thanked everyone who supported her and she was very happy for gaining this top international title for her nation.
Work That Cape: "Miss International 2016" Philippines' Kylie Verzosa during her Crowning Walk--Tokyo Japan
Kylie Versoza "Miss International Philippines"
Kylie is a pro on the Philippines Pageant circuit, having competed for the coveted "Binibining Pilipinas" ("Miss Universe Philippines") crown in 2015 where she placed in the Top 15, and this past year, she competed again, winning the "Miss International Philippines" crown...
"Miss Philippines" Kylie Verzosa during the Swimsuit Competition of "Miss International 2016" Tokyo Japan
Kylie Verzosa "Miss Philippines" during the National Costume Presentation in a Francis Libiran-designed costume depicting San Agustin Church carvings--"Miss International 2016" Finals Tokyo Japan
And now, time to RECAP and REVIEW the "Miss International 2016" EVENING GOWNS!!!

I'll begin with the outgoing "Miss International", Venezuela's Edymar Martinez and then, discuss this year's winner from the Philippines Kylie Verzosa and then discuss some of the Finalists as well as some other "notable" Evening Gowns...
Photos courtesy of Missosology Facebook
"Miss International 2015" Venezuela's Edymar Martinez: Edymar wore a pink and white embroidered ball gown custom-designed by Venezuelan designer Hugo Espina. It featured built-in lighting (see right photo above). This was quite a "Disney" Cinderella-type gown and very "Miss International" in its "Princess"-like look. While this might have worked in Japan, it was a bit too over-the-top and slightly tacky Quinceañera for my taste. But...I do appreciate that it was probably (most definitely) made impeccably and sewn to perfection.
Philippines Kylie Verzosa: Kylie wore a beautiful gown designed by Filipino designer Francis Libiran. The pastel lilac gown featured the intricate sequined embroidery that Libiran is known for. The gown silhouette was gorgeous, it fit perfectly, was the correct length and overall, a stunning gown made for a winner. Like I always say, if you're going to compete in an international pageant--no matter what country you are from--you need to "BRING IT!". This is NOT the time for an off-the-rack dress darlings...Bring on the COUTURE! And Kylie did!
Score: 9.75
Australia Alexandra Britton: 1st Runner-up "Miss Australia" Alexandra Britton also wore a lilac-hued gown for the Finals of "Miss International 2016". It was much more simple than Kylie's. The satin princess-seamed gown featured a heavily beaded bustier/top section. While the gown wasn't extraordinary, it did fit well, she wore the right shoes (no tacky platform heels, thank you very much!) and overall, she looked pretty.
Score: 8.99
Indonesia Felicia Hwang: The beautiful Felicia won the "Miss Best Dresser" Award during the entire competition, as she was very much the perfectly styled fashionista throughout the pre-finals events. Her gown for the final night was STUNNING. The royal blue and ivory halter-style gown featured intricate sequined embroidery that almost made her look like a priceless Ming Vase. To add major drama to the design, it featured a gorgeous satin cape attached to the back. Felicia was coming to win with this gown--and she almost did, since she got the 2nd Runner-up crown!
Score: 9.80
Nicaragua Brianny Chamorro: 3rd Runner-up Brianny from Nicaragua, wore a very pretty and impacting golden gown which featured nude lining and stunning criss-cross sequin details. The gown fit perfectly and the length was on-point! Well done "Miss Nicaragua"!
Score: 9.45
USA Kaitryana Leinbach: Kaitryana captured the 4th Runner-up title at "Miss International 2016" wearing this silver sequined fit-and-flare gown. The design and details were similar to "Miss Nicaragua's" but in silver as opposed to gold. The gown also featured a jeweled waistband. I think this was an elegant and stage-impacting choice, and once again, I was happy that it was classy, fit well and...the CORRECT LENGTH!!! (no tacky platform shoes showing!! Yeay!).
Score: 9.45
Some of the Top 15 Semi-Finalists-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Argentina Yoana Don: Yoana's gown featured a sequined embroidered column dress with a silver iridescent organza overskirt. I'm not a fan of the iridescent organza since to me, it looks polyester-y and cheap. I think this style of gown aged the lovely Yoana and made her look "Mumsy" and it was just Too Mucheey for her. I also didn't like those nude platform heels sticking out from the too-short gown.
Score: 7.50
Canada Amber Bernachi: The beautiful Amber wore this red mermaid-shaped gown for the "Miss International 2016" Beauty pageant. The taffeta gown which featured a nude illusion inset at the neckline and double-tiered bottom ruffles, is from Jovani Los Angeles, and in case you're wondering, the style # is 337153 and retails for ONLY $590! I don't know how Jovani can manufacture a gown like this for under $600. Seriously. I'm guessing it's polyester and made in China but still; this looks like $3,000 gown and it looked quite impressive on "Miss Canada".
Score: 9.10
Dominican Republic Cynthia Nunez: Cynthia wore a golden-nude sequined gown with long sleeves at the "Miss International 2016" Finals. The coloring worked well for the tanned-skinned beauty and I liked the center front slit and that it was "Lady-like" high (and not high!). I also give her MAJOR PROPS for wearing proper golden ankle strapped heels and not tacky platform stripper ones.
Score: 8.99
Finland Emilia Seppanen: Emilia was one of the Top 15 semi-finalists and she wore this teal-colored chiffon gown. I liked the style and especially the dramatic caped "sleeves" and silver crystal neckline. I just had a problem with the too-short length (about 6 inches too short in the front!) and then, she styled it with these nude semi-platform heels that just didn't go with this gown. The shoes are too casual and daytime for such a gown; she should have gone with either matching color or delicate metallic strappy heels with no platform.
Score: 8.00
Poland Magdalena Bienkowska: Magdalena wore this lilac colored fit-and-flare gown that looked quite pretty on her. The dress had an overlay with silver lace applique and blue sequins. There was nothing extraordinary about it in terms of a "Couture"-like design but it fit well, was the right length and worked for "Miss International".
Score: 8.45
Russia Alisa Manenok: I didn't like this gown very much. It looked like a wedding dress for a bride who's getting married for the THIRD TIME. It was a bit Mother-of-the-Bride and kind of like a "Mrs. Claus" costume if she added a red and white fur cap to finish it off. I know that for "Miss International" and its Japan-based owners, these contestants know to think more "sweet" and the farthest thing from Supermodel Sexy but this was just too Prom circa 1992-dated and "Mumsy".
Score: 6.99
Thailand Pattiya Pongthai: Pattiya wore this shimmering lilac (popular color!) sequined gown featuring a beautiful cape detail. The cape was very "Elie Saab/Zuhair Murad" dramatic, but part of me wished the dress had more beading and maybe nude colored lining as opposed to the lilac. It was also a tad bit too short as we can see above.
Score: 8.90
Extra Gown Mentions----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Puerto Rico Gabriela Berrios: Gabriela is a Pageant Pro and competed as "Miss Universe Puerto Rico" at the "Miss Universe 2014" Beauty Pageant. For the "Miss International 2016" contest, she wore this nude-and-ivory organza and embroidered ballgown. It was quite a dress and very impacting on stage. I loved the shape although I don't think it needed those off-the-shoulder straps but other than that, this was quite a gown!
Score: 9.55
Venezuela Jessica Duarte: Jessica wore a red gown designed by Venezuelan designer Hugo Espina. Espina also designed the gown the outgoing "Miss International" wore (see the "Disney Princess"-like ball gown in this blog). This was another one of those "Quite a Gown" moments, but it got little attention from the judges (Jessica didn't make the Top 15). The design featured red hand-sequined embellishment and a SUPERSIZED tulle overskirt. It was A LOT but I still liked it, especially for the "Miss International" Japanese audience.
Score 9.00
Costa Rica Raquel Guevara: Raquel wore this red sequined applique fit-and-flare strapless gown with nude lining. From the front, it was OK and quite nice but then...she turned around and she was "pooping" nude organza! (you can kind of see in photo above). Why, in the name of the Pageant Gods, she wouldn't remove that back piece is beyond me. Oh, and yeah, it looks like she wore those nude Stripper Platform heels I HATE.
Score: 7.75
China Xinna Zhou: Xinna wore this violet colored gown featuring an illusion with crystal beaded top section. It was very "Figure Skating Costume" and not original in its design. She then was ill-advised to add a big ol' necklace that was so not necessary. It all looked a bit 90's dated.
Score: 7.00
Denmark Sara Danielsen: Sara went with an ivory satin gown that had a princess seam slit, back cape/fall and beaded torso. It was very Prom-and-Pageant and very late 1990's/early 2000's. The big updo bouffant was also quite dated and those peep-toe heels were not the shoes to wear with this. At all. While she looked quite "Pageant Pretty", it wasn't Red Carpet Fabulous or giving me anything extraordinary.
Score: 7.89
Vietnam Pham Ngoc Phu'o'ng Linh: While I appreciated the somewhat original design and oversized pearl jeweled sequins and feathers, the nude lining interspersed throughout did give it a bit of a "Figure Skating Costume" look to it. I wish most of the gown had been covered in those oversized pearl jewels.
Score: 8.00
Finally...
Sierra Leone Maseray Swarray: I LOVED Maseray's beautiful face, her short-cropped hair and choice of this bright lipstick red gown. The dress--which featured a satin overskirt and beaded lace embroidered detail--was a bit Prom-and-Pageant and polyester-y but to me, that didn't matter when she displayed such joyous fabulousity.
Score: 8.00
Congratulations to the new "Miss International 2016" Kylie Versoza--and to the country of Philippines for getting this coveted beauty pageant crown! Mabuhay! Maligayang bati sa iyong pagkapanalo

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss Grand International 2016 Finals EVENING GOWN RECAP! The Great and "Uh Oh!/AyyyMija!"
Grand Gowns: Some of my Top Picks for Best Gowns at the "Miss Grand International 2016" Beauty Pageant
Last night were the Finals of the "Miss Grand International 2016" Beauty Pageant. The Thailand-based pageant, which is in it's 4th year, is considered by pageant followers to be one of the "Grand Slam" International pageants, along with "Miss Universe", "Miss World", "Miss International", etc. It also has as it's goal "To Stop the War and Violence", which I guess is another version of that iconic pageant answer of "I just want peace on Earth"...
Grand Beauty: "Miss Grand International 2016", Indonesia's Ariska Putri Pertiwi
The final crowning night took place at the Westgate Las Vegas Casino and Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada USA, with 72 contestants competing from all over the world. The winner was "Miss Grand Indonesia" Ariska Putri Pertiwi. Ariska is 21 years-old and stands 5' 8" (1.73 M) and is a model.
Top Five Queens: (L to R) 3rd Runner-up "Miss Grand Puerto Rico" Madison Anderson, 1st Runner-up "Miss Grand Philippines" Nicole Cordoves, the Winner of "Miss Grand International 2016" "Miss Grand Indonesia" Ariska Putri Pertiwi, 2nd Runner-up "Miss Grand Thailand" Supaporn Malisorn and 4th Runner-up "Miss Grand USA" Michelle Leon
Now, time for the most important part...My EVENING GOWN RECAP!! I'll start with the eventual Winner and the rest of the Top Five and then, it's time for my Top Ten Best Gown Picks from the rest of the contestants!
Photos courtesy of Miss Grand International Facebook
Miss Grand Indonesia Ariska Putri Pertiwi: Ariska's gown was one of the most stunning ones of the night. This isn't usually the case, especially for the eventual winner, but...it was a nice added bonus for the beautiful Ariska. Her gown was inspired by the Javan hawk-eagle and was completely handmade, featuring 800 emerald crystals and 3,000 Swarovski golden crystals. The entire gown took 1200 hours to create. In other words, this was true Haute Couture and probably would retail in the $80,000-$100,000 range, if you were wealthy enough to be able to order it. It was a stunning mermaid-shaped gown.
Score: 9.70
Miss Grand Philippines Nicole Cordoves: Nicole wore another gown for the Preliminaries, but I did like this choice for the Finals better. She wore this golden embellished gown with plunging neckline and I thought it was modern and very impacting. Her hair and choice of wearing only earrings as jewelry was right on point! The gown, by the way, fit her to PERFECTION.
Score: 9.60
Miss Grand Thailand Supaporn Malisorn: Supaporn also changed her gown for the Finals. This one was a blue satin gown with nude illusion panels and crystal details throughout and a princess seam slit. I liked the color but this gown design was a tad bit too figure skating costume. And her hair was slightly too "Pageant Betty".
Score: 8.25
Miss Grand Puerto Rico Madison Anderson: Wow! This was a stunner. It had stage entrance impact, color and looked Pageant Regal. The caviar-beaded column gown fit Madison beautifully and I loved the matching raspberry-colored satin belt/waistband. I might have done without the butterfly clips and too-open front neckline but other than that, this was a GREAT Pageant Gown!
Score: 9.75
Miss Grand USA Michelle Leon: Michelle wore this powder blue lace and sequined gown and garnered the 4th Runner-up prize. The gown was nice. I especially liked the back chiffon falls. There was nothing really extraordinary but it was a very safe choice for her. I loved that the length was JUST PERFECT! See: No tacky stripper platform shoes visible at all! She gets points for that.
Score: 9.00
And now...My other Ten Favorite Gowns of the "Miss Grand International 2016":
Miss Grand England Cherelle Rose Patterson: Cherelle won the "Best Evening Gown" Award at the Final Crowning Night. If I was a judge, I might not have given her the full title but, she was very close. During the Preliminaries, she WERRRKED her gown catwalk overtime, exuding all the Diva-like confidence that a beauty pageant contestant in an international stage is supposed to display. So, for her attitude: Yep! Winner. Her gown, which was a nude tulle illusion with jeweled appliques and a very heavily beaded horsehair-trimmed hem was sexy and impacting but it was waaaay to close to looking like A) A Figure Skating costume and, B) I have issues when models/beauty pageant contestants hold their gown like she was doing. Oh and yeah, those nude SUPER HIGH platform heels were BEYOND. Ladies: If your gown is too short, get it ALTERED! And if you are forced to wear these tacky heels...I DON'T WANT TO SEE THEM. But, I still give her points for attitude and those pearl-and-sequins shoulder details.
Score: 8.90
Miss Grand Sri Lanka Buddhika Harshani: Now this was a classy, gorgeous gown! I loved the draping piece that went from the front to her shoulder and the pearl-appliqued front scroll work was quite marvelous. She looked like a Grecian Goddess who just rose up from the Mediterranean Sea--from a shell! Oh, and to finish, I also liked her center-front parted elegant hairstyle.
Score: 9.65
Miss Grand Bolivia Mory Joselyn Toro: Here's another one of those nude-and-sequined gowns. They are very popular lately with the pageant girls. While some look a bit too tacky, this one was elegant and showstopping. I loved the cowl-draped sequined front and back details and the fact that most of the gown was lined in a nude lining--as opposed to showing waaaay too much of her body. Her slicked hairstyle was a fab finish.
Score: 9.35
Miss Grand Bahamas Selvinique Wright: I couldn't take my eyes off Selvinique during the Finals when she made the Top 20 and Top 10. I liked this coral-colored satin and sequined applique gown. The shoulder and front torso detail was exquisite and very impacting. The color was also very effective against her beautiful skin. If there was any criticism, it would be (yep, you guessed it!), those AWFUL silver Stripper Heel Platform Shoes! Why...On God's Gown Earth...Would she wear those? Selvinique!!!!???
Score: 9.15 (without the shoes)
Miss Grand Cuba Merys Navarro: OK, first off, Merys is SUPER SEXY! (and I'm gay!) but really, she needs to get a contract with "Victoria's Secret" like YESTERDAY! In regards to her gown, I liked her choice of a golden paillette covered column gown with peek-a-boo front and back. It was sexy but not vulgar and she was quite impacting on the stage. I also loved her Supermodel-like hairstyle. Muy Bien Mija!
Score: 9.00
Miss Grand Ecuador Carmen Veronica Iglesias Lopez: Carmen Victoria wore this white fit-to-flare gown featuring caviar beading throughout and nude-to-solid fabric blocking. I thought this was a lovely choice for "Miss Grand Ecuador". I loved how the pointed panels joined in the front and the high-neckline detail. Her makeup and hair were also quite perfect.
Score: 9.55
Miss Grand Rwanda Sonia Gisa: After SOOOOO many sequined applique crystal embroidered nude illusion gowns...it was a breath of fresh FASHION air to see this clean, elegant red cowl draped column gown, accessorized with a simple golden belt. Simple. Gorgeous. I just wished she would have worn gold strappy heels.
Score: 9.40
Miss Grand Peru Priscila Howard: Priscila wore this ivory lace-and-sequin gown with a dramatic ivory georgette satin cape. I recognized this design immediately as the same gown last year's "Miss USA" Olivia Jordan wore during the Evening Gown Competition at "Miss Universe 2015" in Las Vegas (lower photo above). I liked it on Olivia and I like it on "Miss Grand Peru". While it is quite dramatic and impacting for an international pageant stage, it does still have a bit of a "Bridal" look to it. If the bride loved showing so much cleavage!
Score: 9.00
Miss Grand France Oceane Pernodet: I know this choice for one of my Top Picks for "Miss Grand International" gown might be questionable but I still liked it! Is it a bit "Morticia Adams"? Yes. But, I liked the fact that it wasn't "Pageant White" and that her entire front was covered and yet, she was still SUPER SEXY. I also loved the caviar beaded princess seamed details and "necklace" detail cowl draped back. It was very Jean Paul Gaultier-esque.
Score: 9.05
Miss Grand South Sudan Teresa Yuol: OK, first off, I loved Teresa's gorgeous face and fun attitude. I also appreciated the DRAMA of her jacquard ballgown with white strapless bustier. While I wished someone backstage would have fixed the hang-tape from showing (see photo on the left, above), Teresa still gave you Pageant Couture darlings!
Score: 9.15
The "Uh Oh!/Ayyy Mija!" Gowns: Time for the Not-So-Good Gowns
Miss Grand Ethiopia Genet Tsegay: Oh No Genet! I just have one question: Did you look in a mirror before going out--or at least, when you chose this gown? Here's the thing--those bra cups/pads SHOULDN'T BE SHOWING. EVER. It's so tacky I don't even know where to start. Poor thang because she is quite pretty. the tacky-licious bra-pad exposing gown just ruined her.
Score: 5.2
Miss Grand Guatemala Susan Larios Cruz: If you looked up "Tacky Pageant Betty", this dress might be there. It's too Prom-a-licious, cheap-looking and very 1989. No and no.
Score: 6.75
Miss Grand Moldova Alina Staicu: I had to Google her and her age because, in this photo,--and this Mother-of-the-Bride gown, she looked like she was 50 (she's 27 years-old). Too much hair, too much makeup and too 1992-like tacky gown. Oh, and in case you might have missed it...check out her BLACK PLATFORM HEELS. Someone PLEASE give this girl a GAY Fashion-savvy Bestie. ASAP!
Score: 4.90
Miss Grand Netherlands Floor Masselink: This is the definition of a tacky Figure Skating Pageant Gown! Seriously, look at the nude illusion. The sequin applique on top of it. And then, notice that there is a skirt with a big side slit exposing the fact that the top IS A LEOTARD. Oh Noooooooooo!!!!!!
Score: 4.75
Finally, last but not least...
Miss Grand Czech Republic Monika Vaculikova: Well, well, well, look what we have here. Monika wore this ivory tulle and lace applique gown that featured feathers (if the tulle and sequins and applique were not enough!). This is a big ol' mess. Plain and Pageant Simple. It's like a tacky stripper wanted to get married and she decided to wear this. She needs to give this to a thrift store in the Czech Republic. ASAP.
Score: 4.00
Congratulations to the new "Miss Grand International 2016" from Indonesia Ariska Putri Pertiwi (center) and her Runners-up!!

PROJECT RUNWAY....My TOP 5 OMG MOMENTS and RECAP of "Project Runway" Season 15 Episode 6: Absolut Elyx Cocktail Wear Challenge!
Nick Verreos "Project Runway Season 15 Top 5 OMG Moments" YouTube
This past week on Lifetime's "Project Runway" , it was time for the designers to attend an Absolut Elyx party. As we know, there's no such thing as a party on "Project Runway" since this one, of course, involved a challenge: To create a "luxurious" Cocktail Dress. For some reason, a lot of this season's remaining designers struggled...
My sketch for "Cocktail Wear" if I was a "Streetwear" designer
My Fave--"Cocktail Dress" Challenge/Episode 6 Design by Laurence Basse, "Project Runway" Season 15 designer
I'm still a bit perplexed at the reason but, oh well...I had lots to say about this episode so...enjoy my latest "Top 5 OMG Moments" of "Project Runway" for Episode 6 by watching the video below. And if you keep scrolling, you can read my FULL RECAP of the episode as well.
And PLEASE let me know what YOU thought! Leave your comments here, on my YouTube page!
Click below to watch the FULL "Top 5 OMG Moments" Video of "Project Runway" Season 15 Episode 6:

#1 OMG!.....There’s No Such Thing As A Party…On PROJECT RUNWAY! While I’m sure the designers were THRILLED to get a YUMMY Absolut Elyx cocktail—or two! We all know there’s NO SUCH THING AS A PARTY…on “Project Runway”! Listen, I love a good cocktail as much as the next person BUT…when you’re on “Project Runway”, Always know that... A) You’re being filmed, and B) You’re AT WORK! Order that drink, pretend to sip it, but know this isn’t really a PARTEEE. And a Challenge could be coming around the corner! In this case it was in the room and Heidi and Tim gave the designers the task of designing a COCKTAIL DRESS!
#2 OMG!.....Curious Commonalities?? This week, Jenni was making a cocktail dress using sequin appliqué that was VERY SIMILAR to details Erin has done previously, including last week on that fabulous yellow-and-mauve coat she made…Even Erin was like “Ummmm, that looks familiar!” Listen, it’s totally normal to get inspired by other designers in the workroom—your eyes wander and unconsciously (or consciously), design commonalities do occur. Does that make it OK? Talk amongst yourselves.
#3 OMG!.....Find Your Voice! Whether you’re designing Streetwear, Ready-to-Wear, Activewear, Cocktail… or even an Unconventional Materials Challenge, the key to success is to FIND YOUR VOICE. In other words, know who you are and then apply that to the task—as opposed to forcing the TASK onto Who You Are as a designer. If you are a Streetwear designer designing for a Cocktail Challenge, make sure your voice is heard…

Sooo TASHA: Instead of fighting it, I would have suggested doing a luxe Hoodie-inspired dress with side pockets, ribbed banding and a copper sequined Absolut Pineapple back detail. Now THAT would be something I'd like to see!
#4 OMG!.....The Cocktail Struggle Is Real!! OK, now following along this same subject: Why was it SOOOOO difficult for A LOT of the designers to make a Cocktail Dress?? 6 out of the ELEVEN designers either kind-of failed, or failed! Exhibit A, B, C, D, E, and F: Cornelius' wasn’t cocktail but rather Daytime Wedding Guest at the Hamptons; Nathalia was Figure Skating Pageant; Dexter went Hoochie Vegas; Mah-jing almost did a Dripping Blood Dress!; Erin's was 90's feathered and brocade costume-y...And Tasha…well, I don't even know what to call that! What happened? Were they hung-over from too many Absolut Elyx Cocktails? As Zac said, it was disappointing, underwhelming and cocktail hour un-creative.

#5 OMG!....My Winner! While I liked Rik’s amazing bartender-inspired leather apron dress and Jenni’s 1920’s speakeasy-inspired satin and sequined shift dress, my favorite was—by far!—Laurence’s Little Black Dress which was based on a Chesterfield leather sofa. I loved how she ingeniously used the quilted details of that sofa and made exaggerated sleeves out of them: TRES FAB! If I was a judge, Laurence would have been my Top Vote Getter!...For Sure!
And now...Time for my FULL RECAP from MyLifetime.com:
Season 15, Episode 6 Recap: Unhappy Hour
“Project Runway” loves a party. But as we’ve learned time
and time again, a party on “Project Runway” is never truly a party. This
season, in fact, began with a soiree welcoming the new designers, but as they
quickly found out, the party was anything but a celebration and instead, the
source of their first unconventional materials challenge. This week’s episode
began yet again with a festive event, but quickly the designers’ happy hour
turned to work hour when they were tasked with creating a cocktail look inspired
by their surroundings. Grab your favorite drink kids, cause it’s the cocktail
dress challenge recap.
The episode begins with a press party at Absolut Elyx House,
a well-appointed apartment/events space in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District. Heidi, Nina
and Zac are there along with bloggers interviewing them. Soon enough, Tim Gunn
arrives with the designers in tow. As they are all enjoying their Elyx
pineapple copper-mug’ed Absolut drinks, all I can think of is that they
shouldn’t get too liquored up since… there’s no such thing as a “party” on
“Project Runway.”

ICE STYLE.....Skate America 2016 Figure Skating Costumes RECAP: PAIRS and ICE DANCE Costumes!

Ice Dance Style: Costumes from Progressive Skate America 2016 Ice Dance competitors--Sears Centre Arena Chicago Illinois

Pairs Couture: Costumes from Progressive Skate America 2016 Pairs competitors--Sears Centre Arena, Chicago Illinois
Continuing with my "Ice Style" Figure Skating Costumes posts on this past weekend's "Progressive Skate America 2016" , in my last post HERE I recap'ed the LADIES and MEN'S costumes...and now it's time to discuss the PAIRS and ICE DANCE Costumes Highlights!

Haven Denney and Brandon Frazier USA Short Program to Don Juan est mort (from "Don Juan" musical) by Felix Gray: I liked these costumes worn by USA's Denney and Frazier. They were on-point with the "Don Juan" music; very Spain-inspired with the red and black colors as well as the gold applique detail. I liked the asymmetrical gold embellishments of her costume as well as his "looped" tie.
Haven Denney and Brandon Frazier USA Free Skate to Somewhere in Time (soundtrack) by John Barry: These costumes were quite beautiful, especially Haven's. I loved her asymmetrical neckline and the royal blue color. The silver crystal sequin work was also quite spectacular on her costume. I also loved her sequined jeweled cuffs!
Kristina Astakhova and Alexei Rogonov Russia Free Skate to The Storm by Balazs Havas
Le Bien qui fait mal (from "Mozart L'Opera Rock"): These two got my attention for their Steam Punk-like costumes. I liked his more than hers. Alexei's faux leather brown vest with gold trim was kind of smashing--along with his shirt's sleeve cuff detail. And normally, I am annoyed at the too-hipster "man bun" (Note to Alexei: It's sooo 2015!), here it works...kind of. Oh, and yes, Kristina looks slightly too "Oktoberfest Bar Waitress". BTW: They used these same costumes last year, but to a completely different program.
Julianna Seguin and Charles Bilodeau Canada Short Program to Skokiaan by Louis Armstrong: Julianna's costume was vibrant, impacting and quite figure skating fab. I loved (naturally!) the neon bright bubblegum pink fringe details. The sequin work was also nice. His all-black shawl collared tuxedo look was a nice contrast to her bold costume. While I liked his neon green pocket hankie to match the subtle neon green in her costume, I suggest changing it to neon green AND pink since that is the predominant color for her. The added detail will really put the icing on this Figure Skating cake!
Julianna Seguin and Charles Bilodeau Canada Free Skate to Cinema Paradiso (soundtrack) by Ennio Morricone, Cinema Paradiso performed by Monica Mancini: These costumes were very "old school" figure skating. Nothing exciting or directional or even Costume Couture about them. Hers was pretty and then, his...well, quite a bore; black shirt and pants. Nope, try again Charles. Please.
Marissa Castelli and Mervin Tran USA Free Skate to Journey Medley: I have positive things to say about these looks on Castelli and Tran. I think her bright red sequined look was very early 80's Pageant Fab and his reflected the "Journey" era with the red-and-black color blocking detail. With that said, part of me wished they both went "Journey" concert T-shirt 80's Rocker Cool. LOL!
Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres France Short Program to Earned It (from "Fifty Shades of Grey") by The Weekend and Maxime Rodriguez: I always look forward to what James and Cipres wear. These two have the most AMAZING bodies and they almost always give fashion folk like me something when it comes to their costumes. For their SP here, they went sexy (Hello! It's "Fifty Shades of Grey!") and it got my attention. I especially liked her black-and-nude illusion sequined trimmed top section as well as his crystal-accented shoulders.
Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov Russia Short Program to Glam (Electro Swing Remix) by Dimie Cat: One word--Love! I love her razzle-dazzle fringe fabulous gold, silver and white costume and his center front buttoned shirt goes well with her ensemble. BTW: Has anyone else ever said how much Evgenia looks like actress Claire Danes??
ICE DANCE---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alisa Agafonova and Alper Ucar of Turkey Free Dance to Near Light by Olafur Arnalds, Beethoven's Five Secrets by The Piano Guys, Sand by Nathan Lanier: I loved the grape/violet colors, the ombre shading of her costume--and especially the diagonal drape in his top. Who knew these Turkish Ice Dancers had so much Costume Style!! Now I do.
Elena Ilinykh and Ruslan Zhiganshin of Russia Fee Dance to Slumdog Millionaire (soundtrack)
Ang Laga De by Aditi Paul: My ears--and eyes--always perk up any time Ice Dancers do a "Bollywood" theme. Russians Ilinykh and Zhiganshin ventured into India and with costume gusto! I liked these costumes for many reasons: The colors were vibrant and great, the sequin work was fabulous (love her "choker necklace" and his paisley detail!). These looks were Mumbai Hot!
Isabella Tobias and IIia Tkachenko of Israel Short Dance to Blues: Real Life by The Weekend
Hip Hop: Can't Feel My Face by The Weekend: I am always a sucker for a good sequined jumpsuit. This one--seen on Israel's Isabella Tobias would make Carolina Kostner blush huney! I loved the multicolored sequins, the fit, the plunging neckline...Very Hot! And his all-black look was cool and modern. I especially liked his "skinny stretch jeans".
Kana Muramoto and Chris Reed of Japan Short Dance to Blues: The Sun's Gonna Shine Again, Jive: I've Got a Woman, and Swing: Mess Around by Ray Charles: Very bold, very bright. This Japanese Ice Dance team wore these purple and yellow costumes for their Short Dance. While it was a bit "cartoon-y" for sure, I still think they were impacting and in a good way. For some reason, I actually enjoyed his windowpane striped printed jacket and that yellow skinny tie. If there was a Costume Star in this dance, it would Chris!
Kana Muramoto and Chris Reed of Japan Free Dance to Poeta en el Puerto, Amor Dulce Muerte, Nada Puede Dormir, and Poeta en el Viento by Vincente Amigo: For their Free Dance, Muramoto and Reed went Spanish Flamenco with their music and costumes. I think these worked even though there was nothing extraordinary about them. I wish someone would re-invent the Spanish Flamenco Costume "wheel". Por Favor.
Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue of USA Free Dance to I Wanna Dance With Somebody by Bootstrap, Can't Help Falling In Love performed by Ingrid Michaelson, Earned It by Bootstrap: I love these two! Their skating and ice dancing is BEYOND. I wish they would have given me just a little bit more with their costumes. I appreciate her costume's design and delicate mini pleating and flower applique detail but...the color is so bland and really had little impact on the ice. And Zachary...well, he was just whatever; lots of knit jersey. I need just a little bit more kids, costume-wise!
Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani USA Short Dance to Blues: That's Life performed by Frank Sinatra, Hip Hop: I never thought I'd live to see the day Maia Shibutani would done a halter sequined bodysuit and black skin-tight pants. But I did and...I love it! These costumes were great looks for both Maia and Alex (he looks kind of sexy-licious in his "After Waaay Too Many Martinis" unbuttoned tuxedo look). So, yes, I liked these costumes.
Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani USA Free Dance to Evolution: Mirror In Mirror by Anne Akiko Meyers, Akira Eguchi, Evolution: Anyone Like You (Club Mix) by Digitize: Her deep royal blue shirred and sequined dress was very pretty. I loved the top's detail. His was modern, sleek. I think these looks worked. I loved their skate; but didn't necessarily love the music. Their skate--and chic costumes--lifted me up, while the music wanted me to reach for another Vanilla Iced Latte with a Double Shot Espresso. #JustSaying

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss Lebanon 2016 Evening Gown Recap: The Zuhair Murad Gown Parade!
Haute Beauty Queens: "Miss Lebanon 2016" winner (center) and contestants, all wearing Zuhair Murad--"Miss Lebanon 2016" Finals
This past weekend were the Finals of "Miss Lebanon 2016" . The winner was 22 year-old Sandy Tabet originally from Bhamdoun, 14 miles of the country's capital city, Beirut. She defeated 14 other contestants for the coveted crown and will now represent her nation in the "Miss World 2016" occurring this December in Washington DC...
"Miss Lebanon 2016" Sandy Tabet
The "Miss Lebanon" pageant is one of the most stylish ones in the international circuit for one reason alone: Zuhair Murad . The Lebanese couturier--famous for dressing the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Kristen Bell, Chrissy Teigen, who is one of the organizers as well as judge of the national pageant...
Lebanese Beauty: "Miss Lebanon 2016" Sandy Tabet
The exciting part for me--as a designer and beauty pageant aficionado--is the fact that the Evening Gown portion of the pageant is comprised of ALL Zuhair Murad gowns! Yes kids, they are not playing around here--sometimes he even allows some of his $100,000+ costing Haute Couture creations to be worn by the contestants. At last year's "Miss World", Miss Lebanon in fact wore one of his Couture gowns and became a finalist:
Valerie Abou Chacra "Miss Lebanon 2015" at "Miss World 2015" wearing Zuhair Murad Haute Couture
So...Let's get to this year's Evening Gown Couture Parade! I want to start with one of the hosts of the show, Aimee Sayah:
Aimee Sayah, who also happens to be the host of Lebanon's version of "The Voice", wore this silver and gold caged gown from Zuhair Murad Couture Spring/Summer 2016 collection. The off-the-shoulder gown features hand-crafted flower-and-leaf appliques and a metallic belt. Stunning.
And now, the contestants and my Best-to-OK gowns, beginning with the eventual winner...
Sandy Tabet: Sandy wore a chic late 70's/early 80's inspired "zig-zag" sequined Zuhair Murad gown featuring long sleeves, plunging neckline and side front slit. The dress was very Studio 54 Glam Fab and very un-Pageant, which I kind of loved. I wish she would have worn different shoes, however; I would have preferred gold metallic strappy heels. But it looks as if all the contestants had to wear these shoes...poor girls--they're great with a daytime sheath dress but NOT with a $10,000+ Zuhair Murad gown.
Score: 9.05

Kathia Serhal: This gown--worn by Kathia--was the only one in such a strong golden mustard color. And I loved it! It was also the only one without any sequins or applique; it was all gorgeous, supple silk jersey. The design is sexy, Disco/70's fab and Grecian Goddess-like. Talk about making an entrance to a Gala in this...all other ladies would have to just step aside!
Score: 9.60
Reine Yamine: Loved this black Zuhair Muard gown. It's regal, entrance-making and elegant. I loved the subtle jet black sequin applique and the shape is EVERYTHING.
Score: 9.45
Andrea Haykal: Andrea was one of the Runner-ups and she wore this ivory lace and tulle fitted Zuhair Murad gown. White is a very popular choice for pageant gals and I could see this specific gown worn at an international pageant. The long sleeves keeps it "demure" for the ladies who don't want to show too much but the hint of leg through the netting makes sure it is still pageant-sexy! Also this is a two-for-one dress since if you add some white or nude lining, it could also work as your wedding gown!
Score: 9.35

Hala Merheb: Hala wore this stunning black tulle gathered ballgown from Zuhair Murad Ready-to-Wear Fall 2016 Collection. The gown features delicate gold, red and blue leaf and butterfly details slowly cascading down the dress. It is light and airy but still commands gown attention. Part of me wishes, however, that it had layers and layers of under-tulle to give it more volume and impact. But as is, it is still quite beautiful.
Score: 9.25
Tracy Rizkallah: Tracy wore this beautiful black tulle and sequined applique gown at the "Miss Lebanon 2016" Crowning Night Finals. As with all the other gowns in the pageant, it was from Zuhair Murad. And in case you have about $10,000 to spare, it's available here on Net-a-Porter; a bargain compared to his $85,000+ Haute Couture versions! The shape was classic Murad--with the full gathered overskirt and column gown underneath. But once again, I have to critique the shoes! Ladies: Please do not EVER wear nude shoes like this, with a black ball gown. Ever.
Score: 9.00
Rouba Daccache: Rouba chose (or it was chosen for her!) this black tiered gown from Zuhair Murad Ready-to-Wear Pre-Fall 2016 Collection. Normally I am not a fan of the tiered details (can look slightly Tacky Prom!) but I think it works with this design. the gown gives hints of the late 70's with its plunging neckline and sequined "stripes". It's both modern yet Retro.
Score: 8.99

Norma Darwich: Norma wore this red sequin-over-tulle fitted gown. I admire all the intricate applique work and how well it fits. The strawberry red color is also perfect for a dark haired woman and I can see this gown making an impact in the international pageant stage. The only thing I have a problem with is the placement of a specific applique right on her you-know-what. It's awkward to say the least and I doubt the lovely Norma would want the judges' (or anyone else for that matter) eyes focused there.
Score: 8.99

Michele Hajal: Michele's gown was similar in shape to the contestant I discussed before her. But here, the sequin applique was done right! It didn't focus on her you-know-what but instead, the embellishment was distributed quite evenly throughout. The raspberry color is quite pretty and the fit is perfection--notice how right-to-the-floor it is! Ladies: Take note--a long gown should always end there with no shoes visible...unless of course, it is a Hi-lo style.
Score: 9.15
Now, speaking of Hi-lo...
Frederica Abdo: I love a good Hi-lo style gown, especially when it's done right. This nude-colored gown features gorgeous silver and lilac sequin applique throughout and has a soft hi-lo cascading effect. It's pretty and lady-like. I just wish she would have not worn THOSE darn shoes; they look so CLUNKY!
Score: 8.50
Marcella Kalach: Marcella's white gown was very pretty and since it is a Zuhair Murad, I can only imagine how beautiful the intricate sequined applique is. But...it's a little "safe" and rather Bridal-looking. All she is missing is a veil and bouquet and she would be the perfect bride. Without all that, she looks like a Maid of Honor of a very high-end very costly wedding.
Score: 8.55
Pascale Dghem: I like how simple and sleek this white high-necked long sleeved gown is. But, at the same time, this is also why I'm not so sure it's impacting enough for an international beauty pageant stage. I think if it was one shoulder or strapless and then had an attached fabulous dramatic matching cape, then I would have given it higher marks.
Score: 8.45
Rita Bou Melhem: Rita wore this blue Zuhair Murad gown. It's pretty and I like the color. That's about all I can say; it's a nice gown for a wedding--a guest, a Maid of Honor, but for "Miss Lebanon", I expect a little more drama and something not so basic.
Score: 8.35
Maribelle Tarabay: The beautiful Maribelle was a Runner-up at "Miss Lebanon 2016". While she is gorgeous, this gown is so bland to me. It's a safe design and something that one can find a hundred times over at your local department store's "After Five" section. Knowing how there are HUNDREDS of more beautiful and impacting Zuhair Murad gowns, somehow she picked one that looks as if it belongs on the Sale Rack.
Score: 8.00
Finally...
Santa Metri: Sandra's gown was similar to Maribelle's (the contestant I discussed before her) in it's nude illusion with applique on top/full solid skirt at bottom. It's pretty but rather "Zuhair Murad for Macy's" (if he ever licensed his name to do a much, much, much lower priced line). It also reminds me of a figure skating costume, and not in a high-end fabulous way.
Score: 7.99

Congratulations to Sandy Tabet, the newly crowned "Miss Lebanon 2016"...I can't wait to see what Zuhair Murad Haute Couture gown you wear at December's "Miss World 2016" Beauty Pageant!

ICE STYLE.....Skate America 2016 Figure Skating Costumes RECAP! LADIES and MEN Costumes: From Great to Meh!
Skate America 2016 Ladies Costumes Fab
Skate America 2016 Mens Costumes
Hellooooo Figure Skating Costume Fans! It's time for a new season and time for my "Ice Style" blogs! Progressive Skate America 2016 occurred this past weekend--the first of six ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating senior level invitational competitions--at the Sears Centre Arena in Chicago, Illinois USA.
So..., it's time to recap my Favorite --and Meh!" costumes. This post will deal with the LADIES and MEN and I will of course, talk about the PAIRS and ICE DANCE later. Let's see who got my FASHION attention:
Ladies: The Fab Costumes----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gracie Gold USA Short Program: Gracie skated her Short Program to Assassin's Tango (from "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" soundtrack) by John Powell wearing this very modern black costume. I loved it! It was fresh, directional and fashion forward, especially when it comes to figure skating costumes. I loved the bias binding "spider web-like" detail and the subtle silver crystal embellishment. For some reason I kept thinking that I had seen this look somewhere before...and yep! I was right!:
Atelier Versace Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2016: Ummm...First off: I have waaaay too much of a fashion runway photographic memory! Secondly: Gracie's costume was a very well done knock-off and I loved the obvious inspiration from actual Hi-Fashion runway shows; that I TOTALLY appreciate.
Gracie Gold USA Free Skate to Daphnis and Chloe by Maurice Ravel: While Gracie's SP costume was more modern, she went back to her "Ice Queen" look with her Free Skate costume. This nude colored design was still quite fabulous and expertly done. The golden sequins were exceptional and I especially loved the hair accessory. Overall: Quite gorgeous.
Ashley Wagner USA Short Program to Sweet Dreams (Are Made of These) by Annie Lennox: What can I say other than I LOVE THIS! It's chic, superfab and so right for the Annie Lennox music. Ashley wore this blue asymmetrical design which featured great sequin details on the shoulders, neckline and throughout the costume's torso. I also loved the slight royal blue color "peek-a-boo". Oh and to finish everything off, her smoky eyes and red lipstick were 90's New Wave on-point.
Ashley Wagner Free Skate to Exogenesis Symphony Part 3 by Muse: Gorgeous, refined and expensive-looking. This lilac and violet gray sequined costume was a work of Figure Skating Couture. I liked the multi-paneled skirt and heavy-to-light crystal work. In case anyone still wonders what a $5,000-looking figure skating costume looks like...well, see photo above kids! (and it's worth every penny!).
Mao Asada Japan Short Program to Danza Ritual del fuego (from "El amor brujo") by M. de Falla: I loved this "Black Swan"-like costume worn by Mao Asada. The nude illusion-and-black applique embellished costume with godet-paneled skirt was stunning, impacting and belongs in a figure skating costume museum.
Mao Asada Free Skate to En la cueva - La noche (from "El amor brujo"), Pantomime (from "El amor brujo"), El aparecido (from "El amor brujo") by M. de Falla: For her Free Skate, her music was basically the same as her Short Program. But while her SP was more "mysterious" and dark, her FS went into the "fiery" zone. This costume featured red sequin applique, nude illusion and chiffon. The look was very "Carmen", but refined, not campy, and I liked it. I especially loved the draped chiffon skirt.
Mariah Bell Short Program to Roxy Heart (Chicago soundtrack) performed by Renee Zellweger All That Jazz (Chicago soundtrack): This was certainly one of my favorite costumes at Skate America 2016. It had all the costume "razzle dazzle" of something accompanying "All That Jazz" but yet, not coming off too cheap "Halloween" costume version. Loved the delicate lilac coloring and jeweled sequin work.
Mariah Bell Free Skate East of Eden by Lee Holdridge: This costume was very old-school Vera Wang/Nancy Kerrigan. And I loved it! The high-neck style, the see-through sleeves, the sequin crystal work...yes, it was very "Figure Skating Costume 101" but, it was done well and worked for the lovely Mariah.
The "Meh!":
So Youn Park South Korea Free Skate Aranjuez Mon Amour performed by Nana Mouskouri: While I did like the clean silhouette of this costume, I felt it was lacking in some directional design qualities. The point d'esprit sleeves and back were a nice contrast to the all-black and I liked the red and silver crystals but (I cannot believe I am saying this), maybe it needed more crystals?! What do you guys think?
Mai Mihara Japan Free Skate Cinderella by Patrick Doyle: Mai is all but 17 years old and now she's joined the Senior's rank, but yet, her costume (and, let's be honest, her music choice too!) was a tad bit on the Junior's side. Yes, her costume was very "Cinderella" but there was something about that jewel teal color, sequin work, and off-the-shoulder silhouette that screamed "young".
The Men: The Good------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Adam Rippon Short Program to Let Me Think About It (Ida Corr vs. Fedde Le Grand): When Adam came out onto the ice in this--and then the music started, I swear I was at the Tropicana Beach Club in Mykonos ! His barely-there costume of a sleeveless faux leather-and-illusion sequined muscle top (try to say that four times!) and skin-tight black pants went perfectly with the high-energy dance music soundtrack. I loved the royal blue and silver sequin detail at the side and how that illusion back continued past the side seam and onto part of the front asymmetrically. Sexy and right for the skate. Go On Adam!
Adam Rippon Free Skate to Arrival of the Birds ("Crimson Wing" soundtrack) by The Cinematic Orchestra, O by Coldplay: For his Free Skate, he wore another semi-sheer top with black pants. Adam has never met a sheer/illusion shirt he didn't love! While yes, this might be a bit repetitive...A) Adam has the .000032% fat-free body to pull it off...and B) this top had sleeves, thank you very much! The music--and his skate--involved birds of sorts, and he showed this excellently in his choreography. The costume gave "hints" of the feathers, as you can see in the stitched applique work and raw-edged neckline. I liked it, but I wish there was bolder bird details because what was on his top could have been mistaken for an unfinished zebra-print motif. Adam: Continue to keep your costumes semi-sheer sexy but for this one, a little more obvious ornithological references might be needed.
Boyang Jin China Short Program to Spiderman: Of course, this was "Spiderman"! Hello! I liked the obviousness of the costume in regards to the music. But, I also liked that it wasn't so cheesy "Halloween" costume and done in black and silver-white. It was modern, sleek and on-point.
Boyang Jin Free Skate to La Strada by Nino Rota: I'm always interested when skaters skate to "La Strada". The Fellini film involves a clown reference (above photo) and therefore, one can go cartoony in a hot costume minute. Boyang did not. I liked the bold graphic stripes and black-and-white vest. The costume was about 90% fine, except, part of me wished he may have beaded the stripes on the shirt--in black, white and red sequins. That would have been slightly more impacting and brought the costume to a more "Couture" Jean Paul Gaultier level.
Nam Nguyen Canada Short Program to Love Me or Leave Me by Sammy Davis Jr.: I liked Nam's sky-blue and navy costume, skating to "Love Me or Leave Me". The shirt was very 1950s vintage-looking but had just the right amount of sparkle to make it "pop" for figure skating. I also liked how the blues worked together and how well both pieces fit. Listen, I'm not a fan of just a shirt and pants for Men (in International Figure Skating Competitions) but if that's what you're going to give me,...give me SOMETHING! And Nam did.
Sergei Voronov Russia Short Program to The Skin I Live In (soundtrack) by Alberto Iglesias: Sergei's costume was a black jersey long sleeve top and pants. I liked the "broken glass" sequin effect on his shirt. It was just the right amount of detail to get my "Great Costume!" attention. I wished he would have continued this detail at the side seam of the pant--using smaller subtler mirrored sequins.
Shoma Uno Japan Short Program to Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra ("Ladies in Lavender" soundtrack) by Nigel Hess: Lavender and purple are always tricky colors, especially for men in figure skating. The colors can come off too "Wedding Singer" and/or late 70's/early 80's. However, I think this costume (and the colors) worked for Shoma, especially since the music was from "Ladies in Lavender" soundtrack! I liked the feathered detail of the shirt especially. If I had one styling request: I would ask him to get rid of that necklace. I don't care what significance it has for him, it turns his costume from nice to "1987 Uh Oh!".
Shoma Uno Free Skate to Buenos Aires Hora Cero and Barada para un loco by Astor Piazzolla: Well, well, well, Shoma, you are a Costume Divo! I loved his Free Skate (Hello!!! Those quads were INCREDIBLE!) but for my blog here, I loved this costume. It was very Tango Fierce.
The Meh!:
Jason Brown USA Short Program to Writing's on the Wall (James Bond - Spectre) by Sam Smith: OK, first off, I LOVED his skate and performance; he was amazing! And because it was so great (minus a couple of mistakes), I almost excused his lack of a costume. But...I am just so not a fan of the dress shirt and pants look for men; it's a BIG Men's Figure Skating Costume Cop-out! I just wish he gave me "White Dinner Jacket Tuxedo James Bond" as opposed to what he would look like after three shaken-not-stirred Martinis, at 3 AM, getting ready to call it a night--all shirt unbuttoned and missing jacket. It was the low-rent version of Bond. I wanted to see this:
Dinner Jacket Chic: Hello James!
Jason Brown Free Skate to The Scent of Love (from "The Piano") by Michael Nyman: For his Free Skate, he went just as boring with basically, the same "costume" as he donned for his SP but this time, in black. I get the simple "classic" look in regards to his accompanying music, but...please give me more Jason! I hope that because this is just the beginning of the Grand Prix season, maybe your costumes aren't ready. I hope.
Jorik Hendrickx Belgium Short Program to Broken Vow performed by Josh Groban: I swear I HATE the just a shirt-and-pants look on men in figure skating. It's like no one is even trying. The costume designers are out to lunch and so is the creative team. While Jorik is HOT HOT HOT and could look great in anything, I still would like to see something that didn't look as if he went shopping at SEARS men's section for a world class figure skating competition, which seems appropriate since Skate America occurred at the Sears Centre Arena. #Fail
