NIKOLAKI.....Behind The Scenes: KTLA "Critics Choice Awards" NIKOLAKI Gown Presentation

Glamour Countdown--Nick Verreos with models in his NIKOLAKI gowns (L to R) Amanda Fields Bennett, Jayden Robinson, and Selena Sofia--KTLA-5 Hollywood Studios

Last month, I had the wonderful opportunity of making an appearance on KTLA-5 to discuss Awards Show "Red Carpet" in a ZOOM Age....for the 2021 Critics Choice Awards. As the at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising/FIDM, I have the privilege of being invited as the "Fashion Expert" to talk FASHION (of course!) during big awards shows. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, as we all know, awards shows and the accompanying red carpet, have been a little different. Most shows have been done virtually, remote, or a hybrid of LIVE on a stage, and ZOOM and when it comes to a "red carpet", as of late, it's only been on the stars' (and their stylist's) Instagrams that we get to see any gown glamour...

This was basically the case with the Critics Choice Awards, where most stars appeared remotely, via ZOOM, and the only way we got to see any of their Couture, was from the waist up. And yes, later they posted entire photoshoots they did from their glam squad hotel rooms - or backyard of their homes!
Hanger Couture--NIKOLAKI gowns on the rack, backstage at the KTLA-5 Hollywood Studios
With all that, I was invited to talk about what we might see in this new "different" way of doing the Red Carpet, and I brought four models with me in designs from our NIKOLAKI line, to talk about gown trends in the ZOOM age.
Here's is my BEHIND THE SCENES BLOG on how the afternoon went: Model Makeup--Model Amanda Pizziconi putting the final touches on her eye makeup for the special "Countdown to the Critics Choice" NIKOLAKI fashion presentation--KTLA-5 Hollywood Studios

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss Grand International 2020: FINAL EVENING GOWNS!

Top Gowns--Miss Grand International 2020 Finalists in Evening Gowns: (L tom R) Miss Grand Philippines Samantha Bernardo, Miss Grand Indonesia Aurra Karishma, Miss Grand Thailand  Nam Patcharaporn Chantarapadit, Miss Grand Brazil Lala Guedes, and Miss Grand Czech Republic Denisa Spergerova--Miss Grand International 2020 Finals, Bangkok Thailand

Last weekend was the Finals of the Miss Grand International 2020 Beauty Pageant. Even though it was the end of March in 2021, yes, the 2020 edition of the beauty pageant took place, after all the COVID pandemic situation that we have been going through. The final TV production was in one word: WOW. Everything about the Finals was incredible--especially when it came to the production; I just hope that the Miss Universe or Miss World people hire the same Thai production team who put on such an amazing program (they won't, but I digress)...

More Gowns--(L to R) Miss Grand Guatemala Ivana Batchelor, Miss Grand Puerto Rico Fabiola Valentin, Miss Grand United States (and eventual Miss Grand International 2020) Abena Akuaba Appiah, Miss Grand Malaysia Jasebel Robert, Miss Grand Argentina Mariana Varela--Miss Grand International 2020 Finals, Bangkok Thailand
The eventual winner was Miss Grand United States of America, Abena Akuaba Appiah, who is 27 years old, Ghanaian-American and a veteran of the beauty pageant world. In 2013, she became Top Model of Ghana, in 2014, she represented Ghana in the Miss Universe 2014  pageant and was even on the X-Factor show in 2012 for her singing talent...
Abena Appiah as Miss Universe Ghana 2014, at Miss Universe 2014

Abena's perseverance in the pageant world paid off as she bested 62 other contestants from all over the world to win the title of Miss Grand International 2020. She did it with grace, elegance, and class.

Crowning Moment--Miss Grand United States of America Abena Akuaba Appiah becomes Miss Grand International 2020, Bangkok Thailand
Since this is my Sashes & Tiaras BLOG, it's all about discussing beauty pageants, and for this BLOG, it's all about the Miss Grand International 2020 Finals Top 10 Evening Gowns. If you missed it, click HERE for my TOP 15 NATIONAL COSTUMES of the Miss Grand International 2020...and click HERE for my TOP 15 of BEST EVENING GOWNS from the Miss Grand International 2020 Preliminaries.
Let's get to the Finals...But first, the Best National Costume Winners: Miss Grand Guatemala Ivana Batchelor--Her costume, entitled "Xecul Occidental", beautifully depicts and pays homage to the Church of San Andres Xecul, which mixes Christian and Mayan religious imagery with lots of bright colors, including golden yellow, deep reds, and sky blues. The costume was gorgeous, impacting, and best of all, Ivana displayed it with great ease and pride. Designed by Guatemalan designer and artist  Cesar Alejandro Portillo , her costume was a work of costume art.
Miss Grand Thailand Nam Patcharaporn Chantarapadit--Miss Grand Thailand paid tribute to the iconic Floating Market of Siam with this unique and original "national costume". In this costume look, Miss Grand Thailand wears an intricate sequined Thai costume, a Couture version of the straw hat and she is literally riding a paddleboat, mimicking the river market vendors hawking various kinds of fruits. It was made by  Art Akarat .
Miss Grand Japan Ruri Saji--Miss Grand Japan's National Costume was super creative and super fabulous. She first presented herself as a traditional Kokeshi Doll, which then proceeded to open up and reveal an Anime Robot! The part Wooden Doll/Part Robot was inspired by the handmade wooden Kokeshi dolls to showcase traditional Japanese art, as well as the Anime Robot which symbolizes how far Japanese technology has come since the 19th century. The design was created by Filipino designer  Don Cristobal
The outgoing Miss Grand International... Miss Grand International 2019--From Venenzuela, the outgoing Miss Grand International Valentina Figueroa looked like A QUEEN in this red and silver gown from 1Shine Bangkok . The gown featured a silver sequined column dress with a cut-out side slit and nude illusion neckline. For stage drama and impact, there was a very full multi-tiered overskirt in iridescent organza. The gown was a bit over-the-top (especially with the beyond-big overskirt) but this was her final giving-up-the-crown moment so, why not go BIG!

And, now the Final TOP 10 GOWNS... Grand Gowns--(L to R) Miss GRand Guatemala, Miss Grand Indonesia, Miss Grand Brazil, Miss Grand Philippines, and Miss Grand United States of America--Miss Grand International 2020 Finals, Bagkok Thailand
Here are MY TOP TEN, from FAVORITE to LEAST FAVORITE...
1. Miss Grand Thailand Nam Patcharaporn Chantarapadit--My TOP favorite gown from the Finals of Miss Grand International 2020 was this one worn by Miss Grand Thailand. The golden gown by Myriad Grand Monde, was stunning onstage. Immediately, when she stepped out, all I could think of was "RICH!", as well as "That must weigh A TON!!". The design was completely covered in gorgeous and very intricate golden sequins, jeweled crystals, laid out in beautiful and figure-enhancing patterns. My favorite part was probably the beads hanging from the sleeves. It added the perfect touch of drama and fashion.SCORE: 9.90

2. Miss Grand Philippines Samantha Bernardo--My second favorite gown was the one worn by Miss Grand Philippines, Samantha Bernardo. This fitted column design, by Yeye Pantaleon  featured a nude-colored base that was completely covered in silver jeweled crystals ranging in sizes. The layout of the crystals was fabulous and just as in Miss Grand Thailand's gown, really exemplified the beautiful curves of the wearer. The gown fit perfectly and looked great from all angles. This was a "master class" in a very good pageant gown design.SCORE: 9.85

3. Miss Grand Brazil Lala Guedes--Miss Grand Brazil won Best Body in the Miss Grand International 2020 Finals, and when it came time for her evening gown runway, she chose wisely with a design that, literally, was SECOND SKIN next to her. I strained my eyes trying to figure out how this gown was even made, or staying up on her because it looked as if it was PAINTED ON HER BODY; that's how good of a gown this was. Lala looked as if she was almost naked...except for some sequined green and silver "leaves" that were strategically placed to perfection. The would-make-Cher-blush design, was by Brazilian designer Helcio Couture by Helcio Junior and he deserves a bow-down for this Pageant Couture creation.SCORE: 9.80

4. Miss Grand Indonesia Aurra Karishma--Next to Miss Grand Brazil, this was the second SEXIEST EVENING GOWN of the night. When Aurra came out, I literally gasped because you have got to have a 99.999999% fat-free body, and have EVERY millimeter of your body be...PERFECTION. I loved the color and display of shimmering sequins on the dress, creating a pretty stunning effect. "The Aurora Dress", was designed and created by Wiki Wu 5 Prive Atelier Jakarta.SCORE: 9.75
5. Miss Grand Czech Republic Denisa Spergerova--The model beautiful Miss Grand Czech Republic wore my fifth favorite gown from the Finals in this sexy nude-golden column dress by GL Garlate Design. The gown was completely sheer but covered in an intricate array of gold, silver, and ruby red sequins. It had a side cut-out slit (of course!) and multicolored crystals draped at the shoulders. The neckline shape was gorgeous and overall, it was a nice interpretation of these very popular "Nude-Sequined Pageant Gowns".SCORE: 9.45

6. Miss Grand Malaysia Jasebel Robert--Jasebel looked conservative and covered-up--compared to some of the va-va-voom sexi-licious pageant counterparts--in this elegant silver column gown. And that is why I liked it! The silver sequined design. which had a side cut-out slit and semi-nude neckline and sleeves, fit nicely and looked great on her. I especially liked how the crystal designs effortlessly covered her body and parts of her arms. The gown was by Sposa by Rizky.SCORE: 9.25

7. Miss Grand United States of America Abena Akuaba Appiah--Looking resplendent in canary yellow, the eventual winner of the crown, Miss Grand United States of America, wore this strapless corseted design by Mexican designer  Israel Garrido  as her final gown. The design featured a fit-to-flare shape, accented by the aforementioned corset, and a side-front open side slit, done in a sequined lace fabrication. I think it was smart for her to choose the same yellow color she wore for the Preliminaries and to showcase her figure but I admit, I liked her other gown better, although I understand why she changed as her final gown was more in line with what a winner would wear...SCORE: 8.99
In case you were wondering at both of the gowns she wore... Miss Grand United States-Finals (L) vs. Preliminaries Gown (R)
8. Miss Grand Puero Rico Fabiola Valentin--For the Finals, Fabiola wore this gown designed by Thai designer Sivalai. It had the combination of the very omnipresent nude/sequin gown plus...a big pouf of an overskirt, to add drama. The dress featured a nude tulle base that was heavily beaded in an array of multicolored sequins in silver, red and black, laid out to accent the shape of the sexy Miss Grand Puerto Rico. To finish it off, it had a very full ombre-shaped tulle overskirt attached at the back high hip. Not sure if that overskirt was even necessary as it looked cumbersome and dare I say, too mucheeey.SCORE: 8.50

9. Miss Grand Argentina Mariana Varela--Miss Grand Argentina wore a lemon yellow gown that also had a back overskirt, that I thought was a bit unnecessary. The main dress--which was a column fit-and-flare design in nude (of course) with vertical beading throughout the skirt, attached to a very fitted corset/bustier. The overskirt, in organza, had layers of cascade ruffles. I felt that the main dress itself was effective enough and the addition of the overskirt took it to a vintage Miss Venezuela 80's edition level. The gown was designed by Julio Gonzalez.
10. Miss Grand Guatemala Ivana Batchelor--Last on my Finals Gowns List was the dress worn by the very pretty Miss Grand Guatemala. I have to say I was very disappointed that she wore this blush-colored design for the Finals since I was a big fan of her red sequined gown in the Preliminaries (see HERE !). This gown, which according to her social media, was provided for her from Guatemala Prom-and-Pageant shop, Blessings Co. Guatemala. It featured a sequined torso over a nude base with a shredded organza lower section. While the design wasn't that bad, for some unknown reason, it had boning/wiring at the hem which made it shift like a hoop skirt, and look rather clumsy as she walked. Overall, it looked dated and aged her and frankly overwhelmed her; I forgot how statuesque and pretty she was.SCORE: 8.00

CONGRATULATIONS to the new Miss Grand International, from the United States of America (via Ghana!), Abena Akuaba Appiah and her Runners-up!

ICE STYLE.....2021 World Figure Skating Championships - ICE DANCE and PAIRS COSTUMES!

Top Photo: Ice Dance Style--(L to R) Canada's Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier, USA's Madison Chock and Evan Bates, and USA's Madison Hubble and Zachary Donohue Lower Photo: Pairs Style--(L to R) China's Sui Wenjing and Han Cong, USA's Ashley Cain-Gribble and Timothy LeDuc, and representing the Figure Skating Federation of Russia Anastasia Mishina and Aleksandr Galliamov--2021 World Figure Skating Championships
Rounding out my ICE STYLE figure skating costumes BLOG on the 2021 World Figure Skating Championships, it's time to discuss the ICE DANCE and PAIRS costumes...And in case you missed it: Click HERE for the MEN, and click HERE for the LADIES.
Now, let's begin with the PAIRS:

Ashley Cain-Gribble and Timothy LeDuc USA Free Skate--Skating their Free Skate to Piano Concerto No. 2 by Sergei Rachmaninov, Ashley and Timothy looked classy and elegant in these silver-gray toned costumes. I loved the ombre light-to-dark shading as well as the heavy-to-light crystal work. In addition, I also appreciated the fact that she matched him. Their "fashion/glam squad" (or Ashley & Timothy) thought of everything...down to the silhouette: They're both featuring turtlenecks. These looks were superb.SCORE: 9.45

Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier USA Free Skate--For their Free Skate to Fall On Me by Andrea Bocelli and Matteo Bocelli, Immersive Light of Love composed by Karl Hugo, Knierim and Frazier wore these costumes. I thought these were nice, pretty, and did their *costume* job to support the music and their skate. The gold, silver, and ivory beadwork on Alexa's top was elaborate and expensive-looking but I especially liked Brandon's ombre-dyed draped top with the colors, delicate sequins, and nicely executed fit.SCORE: 9.00
Pen Cheng and Jin Yang China Free Skate--For their Free Skate to Travel to Edinburgh (from "Cloud Atlas" soundtrack) by Tom Tykwer, Johnny Klimek and Reinhold Heil, Cloud Atlas Sextet (from “Cloud Atlas”, Piano Version) by Tom Tykwer, Johnny Klimek and Reinhold Heil, Cloud Atlas End Title (from "Cloud Atlas" soundtrack) by Tom Tykwer, Johnny Klimek and Reinhold Heil, Pen and Jin wore these costumes above. Pen Cheng wore this outstandingly gorgeous design which featured a "spray" of sequin leaf-like motifs in royal blue, silver and black over a delicate lilac-colored dress with nude illusion neckline and sleeves. It was one of those costumes that if taken to the floor, could have come from an Elie Saab Haute Couture collection. Jin Yang's look was a nice contrast: Somber and elegant in his black fitted "suit" with band collar shirt and crystal seam trim. They looked crisp and luxe.SCORE: 9.70
Sui Wenjing and Han Cong China Short Program--For their Short Program to Blues for Klook by Eddy Louis, Sui and Han wore these looks above. Both were great and effective on the ice. I especially liked her blue-violet dress covered in sparsely displayed sequin crystals. Also, I really liked that there was the look of an intricately boned bustier/corset underneath that you could barely see. Han Cong's look was more of a black fitted shirt and pants with button and sequin accents on the top. SCORE: 9.10
Sui Wenjing and Han Cong China Free Skate--For their Free Skate to Rain, In Your Black Eyes by Ezio Bosso, they wore these costumes above. Once again, Sui Wenjing was THE COUTURE Star (isn't she always?). She had a one-shoulder draped costume in blue-violet with beautiful sequin work that spread throughout the torso, one arm, and even her wrist accent. He looked dapper in a fitted black jacket and pants ensemble with a band collar shirt that featured black jeweled details in the neck and front placket. Nice costumes all around.SCORE: 9.45
Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov *Figure Skating Federation of Russia* Short Program--For their Short Program to Bolero by Maurice Ravel, Tarasova and Morozov wore these costumes above. The royal blue and black designs were striking against the white ice "stage" and made for an impressive Pairs costume tableaux. Both hers and his featured black sequin applique that accented their costumes and stood out against the blue-black ombre-dyed colorings.SCORE: 9.00
Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov *Figure Skating Federation of Russia* Free Skate--For their Free Skate to Adagio by Tomaso Albinoni performed by Dimash Kudaibergen, Tarasova and Morozov wore these black and silver costumes. While their Short Program costumes had more "classic" design details and traditional sequin appliques, these were more directional and modern in their styling. I liked Tarasova's chic dress with a mix of solid and sheer with its angular lines and crystal work, and I also liked how his top was a representation of her dress, but in a male costume form. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was that skin color illusion panel in the front of his neckline; not only did it not match his skin tone, but it looked cheesy. SCORE: 9.00
Anastasia Mishina and Aleksandr Galliamov *Figure Skating Federation of Russia* Free Skate--For their Free Skate to Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen Mishina and Galliamov wore these fabulous costumes. These bold, graphic, fashion-forward looks stood their own ground against the iconic Queen music. I loved the bold red and black colors on their costumes and I especially liked the geometric sequin trim bands on his top. Once again, the nude illusion (on him) didn't really match but this time, I almost didn't care, because the rest of the costume was so impressive!SCORE: 9.80

ICE DANCE: Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha Canada Free Dance--For their Free Dance to Real in Rio (from "Rio" soundtrack) by John Powell, Locked Up (from "Rio" soundtrack) by John Powell, Chained Chase (from "Rio" soundtrack) by John Powell, Bird Chaise (from "Rio" soundtrack) by John Powell, Canadians Lajoie and Lagha wore these costume above. They fit so  PERFECTLY with the theme and music that the minute I saw the colors, the bird/feather-like sequins...I knew it was "Rio"! I loved the stage-impacting bold red and fringe details in her costume, as well as his blue and black shaded design. The multicolored sequin embellishment on both reminded me of exotic Amazonian birds and was beyond fabulous, taking the designs to an elevated level.SCORE: 9.75
Tiffany Zahorsky and Jonathan Guerreiro *Figure Skating Federation of Russia* Rhythm Dance--For their Rhythm Dance to March: The Greatest Showman (soundtrack), Quickstep: The Greatest Showman (soundtrack), Waltz: The Greatest Showman (soundtrack), March: The Greatest Showman (soundtrack), Russian Ice Dancers Zahorsky and Guerreiro vibed characters from "The Greatest Showman" with these costumes. Tiffany's purple-colored costume was a nice representation of Zendaya's purple leotard costume in the film, and Jonathan's ensemble of a white tuxedo shirt, black pants, and jacquard vest gave a nod to Zac Efron's look. They were cute but nothing outstanding or figure costume otherworldly.SCORE: 8.00
Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri Italy Rhythm Dance--Skating their Rhythm Dance to Blues: Hopelessly Devoted to You (from "Grease Live!") by John Farrar, Rock: Greased Lightning by Warren Casey, Jim Jacobs performed by Glee Cast, Swing: We Go Together (from "Grease Live!") by Warren Casey, Jim Jacobs, Italians Guignard and Fabbri gave their best Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta looks with these costumes. I liked her sexy white-and-red polka-dotted knotted crop top and super skinny black Lycra pants as well as the red belt and scarf accessories. Marco went for your basic "Grease" stud in a simple tight white t-shirt and even tighter black pants...and yes, a cheesy necklace. I wouldn't change a thing.SCORE: 9.00
Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker USA Rhythm Dance--Skating their Rhythm Dance to Swing: Staying Alive (from "Saturday Night Fever") by Bee Gees, Swing: Night Fever (from "Saturday Night Fever") by Bee Gees, Swing: Boogie Shoes (from "Saturday Night Fever") by Bee Gees, Swing: You Should Be Dancing (from "Saturday Night Fever") by West End UK Production, Americans Hawayek and Baker looked so good in their Disco-inspired looks. Kaitlyn's sequined covered purple dress was made for the dance...I mean... the ice floor. Jean-Luc was HOT HOT HOT in a plunging neckline shirt and super-tight pants. The fact that he even looked like a young Barry Gibb--with the long feathered hair and beard!--really made me want to start shaking my groove thang!SCORE: 9.50
Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker USA Rhythm Dance--Skating to a really fabulous rendition of Heart of Glass (Crabtree Remix) by Philip Glass & Blondie, and First Movement by Philip Glass, Hawayek and Baker wore these costumes above. I thought they were costumes one would see in a modern dance ballet--sleek, directional, clean-lined, and void of sequins and/or beads. Her tie-dye terracotta-colored dress with the white skirt was modern and ethereal. I am normally not a big fan of the guy's just wearing an all-black look but here, for this music and program, it worked.SCORE: 9.00

Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin *Figure Skating Federation of Russia* Rhythm Dance--For their Rhythm Dance to Quickstep: Sparkling Diamonds (from "Moulin Rouge" soundtrack) performed by Nicole Kidman, The Show Must Go On (from "Moulin Rouge" soundtrack), Alexandra and Ivan looked like "Satine" and "Christian" from "Moulin Rouge" in these stage-appropriate costumes. Alexandra wore a very Nicole Kidman-inspired red stretch velvet corseted look with gold and red trim, along with a bejeweled "necklace", and Ivan did his best undone-bow-tie-tuxedo look vibing Ewan McGregor. The costumes did a great job of including many small details honoring the film's designs.SCORE: 9.20
Madison Chock and Evan Bates USA Rhythm Dance--Wearing these costumes to their Rhythm Dance to Blues: Too Darn Hot by Cole Porter (original cast recording), Quickstep: Too Darn Hot by Cole Porter (original cast recording), Swing: Too Darn Hot by Cole Porter (original cast recording), Chock and Bates looked dazzling and just right for the music. I especially liked Madison'ssilver-and-nude sequined costume that was so spectacular, if taken to the floor, it would make for a fabulous Miss Universe evening gown! Evan looked nice in his tuxedo with an undone shirt and red pocket hankie.SCORE: 9.25
Madison Chock and Evan Bates USA Free Dance--For their Free Dance to Egyptian Snake Dance: Yearning by Raul Ferrando performed by Fathi Aljarah, Sahara Nights by DJ Quincy Ortiz, Layali Al Sharq performed by Al-Ahram Orchestra, Chock and Bates wore these costumes above this past season. I don't have enough positive words about how I feel about these costumes. They were probably my favorites from all the Ice Dancers this past season: they were effective, impressive, stage-impacting, looked very expensive and very well made. To sum it up in one word: OUTSTANDING.SCORE: 9.95
Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalopov *Figure Skating Federation of Russia* Rhythm Dance--For their Rhythm Dance to Slow Fox: Singin' In the Rain by Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown, Quickstep: Singin' In the Rain by Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown, Slow Fox: Singin' In the Rain by Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown, Russia's Sinitsina and Katsalopov wore these looks above. The theme was obviously "Singing in the Rain" and the movie. The baby blue dress on Victoria I assume was honoring the blue color of Debbie Reynolds' dress in the film. While it was pretty, it seemed almost dowdy on the young and beautiful Victoria. Nikita wore a black vest, black pants, and an unbuttoned dress shirt as her dance partner, which I thought was a bit of a costume letdown. SCORE: 8.00
Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalopov *Figure Skating Federation of Russia* Free Dance--For their Free Dance to I Giorni: Andante by Ludovico Einaudi performed by Daniel Hope, Songs My Mother Taught Me by Antonin Dvorak performed by Nemanja Radulovic, these were much better-designed costumes than what they wore for their Rhythm Dance. Victoria wore a blush-colored dress with a one-shoulder neckline, draped skirt, and silver crystal sequin embellishment. I especially loved his look and that fabulous deep violet-colored top with raw-edged fabric pieces that gave him an edgy directional look.SCORE: 9.55
Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue USA Rhythm Dance--Skating their Rhythm Dance to Swing: Express (from "Burlesque") performed by Christina Aguilera, Blues: A Guy Who Takes His Time (from "Burlesque") by Christina Aguilera, Swing: Tough Lover (from "Burlesque") by Christina Aguilera, Hubbell and Donohue wore these looks above. Both vibed the "Burlesque" music and theme with these super sexy looks. Madison wore a sheer black bodysuit with gorgeous sequins strewn throughout the torso and shimmying fringe at the hips. Zachary looked just right in a sheer black t-shirt, black vest, and super-tight pants. If there was any critique, I would have wished some of those same crystals seen on Madison's costume, on Zachary.SCORE: 9.10
Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue USA Free Dance--For their beautiful Free Skate to Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley, Pray Gently to the Light by Karl Hugo, and Hallelujah by KD Lang, Hubbell and Donohue wore the costumes above. Both honored the sublime and melancholic music with these costumes. Her rose-pink dress was elegant, not showy, and beautifully beaded and Zachary's black ensemble was a nice counterpoint to hers. I especially liked the sheer vs. solid panels on his shirt, adding some texture and visual interest.SCORE: 9.50

ICE STYLE.....2021 World Figure Skating Championships - LADIES COSTUMES!

Ladies Style--(L to R) Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, Alexandra Trusova, Karen Chen, and Anna Shcherbakova--2021 World Figure Skating Championships
Continuing with my ICE STYLE BLOG on this past week's 2021 World Figure Skating Championships...in my last post I discussed THE MEN'S COSTUMES HERE, so now it's time for the LADIES...Let's begin with Japan's Rika Kihira:

Rika Kihira Japan Short Program--For her Short Program to The Fire Within by Jennifer Thomas, Rika wore this very striking costume which featured a very elaborately sequined deep blue-and-red dress over deep blue leggings. The "dress" had an eye-catching display of fire-like red and blue strips throughout the torso, all heavily beaded, over an ombre-dyed stretch chiffon base. The heavily appliqued bust detail had the effect of a heart "exploding". The rest of the dress featured nude illusion from neckline to shoulder, and to the back. It was a very detailed costume for sure. I'm not sure if the leggings were even necessary but, it did add a slightly modern touch to the look.SCORE: 9.05
Satoko Miyahara Japan Short Program--For her Short Program to Gnossienne: No. 1 by Erik Satie, Metamorphosis Two by Philipp Glass, Satoko skated wearing this aqua-green costume. The design was a very classic ladies figure skating costume with its lace applique, tiny crystal beading, nude illusion, and double-layered skirt. Even though it didn't reach any new heights of style or fashion in the world of figure skating costumes, it was pretty and right for the music.SCORE: 8.99
Kaori Sakamoto Japan Free Skate--For her Free Skate to Main Title Trinity Infinity from The Matrix (soundtrack) by Don Davis, Clubbed To Death from The Matrix (soundtrack) by Rob Dougan, Chateau Vol.2 from The Matrix (soundtrack) by Rob Dougan, Kaori wore this fabulous costume which I loved this past season. This is a perfect example of taking figure skating costume design to new (higher) levels. I loved the modern fabrication of latex-like-faux stretch leather, along with the asymmetrical details. But really, the "stars" were those stunning jeweled crystals that mimicked "The Matrix" code/digital rain. Kaori looked fresh, modern, high-fashion styled, and dare I say it: bad-a** !SCORE: 9.90
Bradie Tennell USA Short Program--Bradie skated her Short Program to Moderation by Florence and the Machine. I think it's fitting that for this skate to a Florence and the Machine song, Bradie would wear a more modern, sleek costume. I liked this second-skin black jumpsuit for the fact that it was quite a sexy departure from what we normally see her wear (she's more known as being in the "Ice Princess" category in terms of costumes). The costume had the appearance of a separate midriff-baring crop-top and super-skinny tight leggings and featured geometric details, semi-see-through panels, and delicate beading. If she were to really elevate the entire look, I would have liked to have seen a more modern hairstyle. A faux-hawk perhaps?!SCORE: 9.00
Bradie Tennell USA Free Skate--For her Free Skate to Sarajevo by Max Richter, Dawn of Faith by Eternal Eclipse, Bradie wisely contrasted her modern sleek look from the Short Program to this more classic elegant costume. The ivory and black ombre-shaded costume featured an asymmetrical neckline, boning-like details reminiscent of vintage Dior corselettes, and beautiful silver crystals that went from heavy to light throughout the torso. This was quite an exquisite costume and very Ice Style Couture.SCORE: 9.35
Karen Chen USA Free Skate--Karen skated her Free Skate to Butterfly Lover Concerto by Takako Nishizaki - Takako Nishizaki wearing this absolutely beautiful costume. The lilac-colored design featured a rich display of crystals, sequins, and butterfly motifs encircling the torso and bodice, creating a stunning visual accompaniment to her skate and music.SCORE: 9.75
Hae-in Lee South Korea Free Skate--Lee skated her Free Skate to Nina's Dream (from "Black Swan" soundtrack) by Clint Mansell, Stumbled Beginnings (from "Black Swan" soundtrack) by Clint Mansell, A Swan Is Born (from "Black Swan" soundtrack) by Clint Mansell, Perfection (from "Black Swan" soundtrack) by Clint Mansell wearing this gorgeous costume. Even though the music was to "Black Swan", the costume was done in a deep hunter green shade which was unique. I also loved the feather-like crystal embellishment on the torso in green and silver which gave a nod to the swan. Last, but not least, the crystal beaded neckline was EXQUISITE!SCORE: 9.75
Alexandra Trusova *Figure Skating Federation of Russia* Short Program--For her Short Program to Love Story by Lola and Hauser, Appassionata by Secret Garden, Alexandra wore this white and lilac shaded costume. It was a pretty costume and I appreciated the side-back strappy details (very Versace-lite!) and the crystal embellishment throughout the front torso. Although I didn't mind the delicate white-and-lilac color, I feel Trusova looks better in stronger richer colors and I wish the skirt was shorter for her petite frame.SCORE: 8.45
Alexandra Trusova *Figure Skating Federation of Russia* Free Skate--For her Free Skate to O Verona (from "Romeo and Juliet" soundtrack) by Craig Armstrong, Montagues & Capulets (from "Romeo and Juliet" soundtrack), Come, Gentle Night (from "Romeo and Juliet" soundtrack) by Abel Korzeniowski, and Dance of the Knights (from "Romeo and Juliet") by Sergei Prokofiev Alexandra wore this black and fuchsia-colored costume. The design was "dark" and "mature" for the young lady but fit the imposing "Romeo and Juliet" Prokofiev music. I liked the "skeletal"-like details around her ribcage/torso and web-like back strap embellishment...
The Thorn Queen...but not at Worlds
...As her skate neared its second half, I was waiting for her to do the release of her sleeve thorns which was a highlight (for me) of her skate and costume...however...it never came. It seems that the Russian Federation might have gotten some "costume notes" from previous judges who possibly suggested to not have that (maybe too gimmicky??)...Oh well...because I liked it!
Elizaveta Tuktamysheva *Figure Skating Federation of Russia* Short Program--Elizaveta skated her Short Program to Lovely by Billie Eilish and Khaled. She wore this "fashion forward' look, consisting of a see-through stretch mesh leotard/bodysuit with a crop black top and a very mini skirt with silver belt/chain details. She accessorized the look with black gloves and a silver metallic wrist bracelet. She looked like a sexy back-up dancer for a 90's Paula Abdul. The costume was more in line with something one would see for a "Show"/Exhibition look but it works for Elizaveta because as we all know, she's ALWAYS ready for a show!SCORE: 9.00

Elizaveta Tuktamysheva *Figure Skating Federation of Russia* Free Skate--For her Free Skate to Chronicles of a Mischievous Bird by Bkhima Iunusov, Elizaveta wore this black costume above. The design features wing-like fluttery sleeves, an asymmetrical "skirt" and corset-like details around the midriff. The costume mixes solid and see-through materials for a dark and sexy vibe. While I liked most of it, I am not a fan of the oddly colored "nude" illusion panel in the front neckline; it's just too dark for her skin tone.SCORE: 8.75
Anna Shcherbakova *Figure Skating Federation of Russia* Short Program--Skating to O doux printemps d'autrefois by Jules Massenet, performed by Joshua Bell for her Short Program, Anna wore this beautiful costume above. The blue design had a gathered bust with a keyhole front, semi-sheer sleeves, and crystal-encrusted Empire and waist seams. As a costume, it reflected a romantic, feminine aesthetic with its silhouette but I also liked how the blue-violet ombre shadings and crystals reminded me of a lovely star-filled night sky.SCORE: 9.25
Anna Shcherbakova *Figure Skating Federation of Russia* Free Skate--For her Free Skate to Morning Passages by Philipp Glass, Big Plans (from "The Home of Dark Butterflies" soundtrack) by Panu Aaltio, Beethoven's Five Secrets by The Piano Guys, Anna wore this costume...and honestly, it is one of my favorites of the season. The design is gorgeous, luxe, romantic, and goes well with the music. The costume features lovely ombre shading in ivory, silver to deep gunmetal grays in the torso and skirt as well as beautiful pink/skin-colored sleeves. The crystal beading swirls around her body like shiny stars encircling a midnight sky. All in all, if one added layers of chiffon that went to the floor, I could easily see this on an Awards Show red carpet--once we start having those again!SCORE: 9.85

ICE STYLE.....2021 World Figure Skating Championships - MEN COSTUMES RECAP!

The Male Costume Peacocks--(L to R) Japan's Shoma Uno, Japan's Yuzuru Hanyu, Hanyu, and Yuma Kagiyama--2021 World Figure Skating Championships, Stockholm Sweden
This past week was the 2021 World Figure Skating Championships, held in Stockholm Sweden. Skaters competed for the title of world champion in Ladies, Men, Pairs, and Ice Dance. Since I discuss figure skating costumes here in BLOG, it's time to discuss the costumes from the Worlds. First up: THE MEN: Jason Brown USA Short Program--Jason skated his Short Program to Sinnerman by Nina Simone wearing this sleek all-black costume. The design highlighted his very lean body and heightened the lines of his gorgeous skating. I loved the delicacy and not in-your-face aspects of the sequin work on his top, as well as the delicate shade differences in the top's fabrications.SCORE: 9.00

Jason Brown USA Free Skate--For his Free Skate to Slaughter on Tenth Avenue - a ballet from Richard Rodgers famously choreographed by Balanchine - Brown, wore a super-tight bright pink t-shirt and black pants. The look reminded me of one of the members of the Sharks or Jets, from "West Side Story", a very 1950's-like young guy...who all of a sudden breaks into a fabulous dance routine! While I would have liked something more "thoughtful" and less "basic", it still worked for him since again it highlighted the gorgeous lines of his skating and choreography.SCORE: 8.00
Nathan Chen USA Short Program--For his Short Program to Asturias, Canción del Mariachi (from "Desperado") performed by Los Lobos, Antonio Banderas, Chen wore a costume that was very, very close to the look worn by Banderas in Robert Rodriguez' film "Desperado". I liked this design on Chen, including the white band-collar shirt and "Mariachi"-lite pants, featuring the silver buckle-like detail on the leg. SCORE: 8.75

Nathan Chen USA Free Skate--For his Free Skate to Selections from Philip Glass, Nathan went with a very Nathan look, of an all-black colored costume featuring a floaty semi-sheer black gauze-knit top, with black pants to go along. It was clean, slightly edgy, and not distracting...which is how Nathan seems to like his "costumes". SCORE: 8.99
Shoma Uno Japan Short Program--For his Short Program to Great Spirit by Armin ban Buuren vs Vini Vici feat. Highlight Tribe, Japan's Shoma Uno, wore this wine-red costume featuring a fabulously studded top with baby blue, red and silver rhinestones in a fireworks-like motif. Some of the crystals can also be seen on the top of the pants as well. I loved this on Shoma because it had stage presence, and the multicolored sequins were stunning on the ice as well.SCORE: 9.10
Shoma Uno Japan Free Skate--For his Free Skate to Dancing On My Own performed by Calum Scott, Your Last Kiss by Karl Hugo, Shoma wore this costume that consisted of a blue-violet sequined shirt and deep violet-colored pants. As with his Short Program look, the shirt is the "Costume Star" here, featuring the intricate web-like sequin detail, cut-outs with nude illusion backing, and traditional shirt collar tailoring. SCORE: 8.99
Yuma Kagiyama Japan Short Program--Yuma skated his Short Program to Vocussion by Yo-Yo Ma & The Silkroad Ensemble, Rabih Abou-Khalil in this costume which paralleled the music's "Orientalist/Near East" mood. I really liked the kimono-inspired top with that gorgeous scroll-like sequin applique work with jeweled crystals. The thin double belt was a nice accessory touch. This great top was well-balanced with black pants and matching color gloves.SCORE: 9.20
Yuma Kagiyama Japan Free Skate--For his Free Skate to Jake Enters His Avatar World  (from "Avatar" soundtrack) by James Horner; The Bioluminescence of the Night  (from "Avatar" soundtrack) by James Horner; Gathering All the Na'vi Clans for battle (from "Avatar" soundtrack) by James Horner, Yuma wore this costume which featured "bioluminescent"-looking green-aqua colors which gave a nod to "Avatar". The top had rhinestones down a shiny satin front panel, along with a rather oddly colored "nude" illusion panel that didn't match Yuma's skin color. The costume looked a but "amateur" hour, child-like and dare I say, cheap-looking. Not so much a fan.SCORE: 6.99
Yuzuru Hanyu Japan Short Program--Yuzuru skated his Short Program to Let Me Entertain You by Robbie Williams wearing this fabulous ensemble! This is a STANDOUT in its design, execution, and overall impact. The look consisted of one of the best Moto jackets I have seen - even in actual runway shows! - with superb stud-work throughout the seams, lapels, pockets. The jacket was complemented by the tightest latex-like pants. And no detail was sacrificed: Even his belt got the crystal stud treatment. The overall effect was a TEN for me; I was THOROUGHLY entertained...by his costume!SCORE: 10
Yuzuru Hanyu Japan Free Skate--For his Free Skate to Ten to chi to - Heaven and Earth (soundtrack) by Isao Tomita, Yuzuru wore this take on a traditional kimono/samurai ensemble. The look featured a kimono-inspired top in tie-dye blue with gold and silver sequin flower applique. The top had a standup collar, flutter sleeves, and was accessorized with a purple and gold-trimmed mini obi. The purple gloves matched the obi. The look was complimentary to his music and worked just fine, but honestly, it just lacked the Stage Fabulousness of his Short program costume.SCORE: 8.99
The close-up of the sequin work on Yuzuru's top was exquisite!

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss Grand International 2020 Preliminary Competition EVENING GOWNS - MY TOP 15 BEST

Best in Gowns--Miss Grand Internatioonjal 2020 contestants in their Evening Gowns during the Miss Grand International 2020 Preliminary Competition: (L-R) Miss Grand Thailand, Miss Grand Guatemala, Miss Grand Colombia, Miss Grand Indonesia, Miss Grand United States of America

Two nights ago was the Preliminary Competition for the Miss Grand International 2020 beauty pageant. The pageant, being held in Bangkok Thailand, is the first of the "biggies" (like Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss International) being held during the COVID pandemic. The organizers took many precautions for the pageant and the safety of the contestants, having them all be quarantined for weeks in their hotel rooms until it was time to safely do the pre-finals activities. Now, back to the pageant... I blogged about my TOP 15 in National Costume HERE, and now it's time to discuss my FAVORITES in Evening Gown from the Preliminaries...

(L-R) Miss Grand Ecuador, Miss Grand Philippines, Miss Grand Puerto Rico, Miss Grand Japan, and Miss Grand Kenya.

TRENDS: The Gowns at this year's pageant were mostly sequined, with lots of see-through (still a big pageant gown trend), verging on looking like a mix between Bob Mackie/Cher and a Very SEXY-licious figure skating costume. The need for DRAMA was abundant with some gowns either having detachable overskirts (Miss Grand Argentina), reveal moments (Miss Grand Thailand), too-long capes, or literally, a skirt that gets RIPPED AWAY...to show a studded bustier/leotard (Hello Miss Grand Panama!!). Also, most of the contestants wore UBER high platforms which were distracting. I wished they would have chosen silver or gold strappy heels (without the 5" platforms) but oh well...

So without any more haste...

My TOP 15 in EVENING GOWN:

1. Miss Grand Colombia Natalia Manrique Aguilar--Miss Grand Colombia's gown was my TOP choice in all the gowns at this year's Miss Grand International Preliminary Competition. It was probably the one that combined elegance (hard to find in lots of these dresses!), drama (the gorgeous side overskirt), Haute Couture-like craftsmanship with luxurious fabric, stunning sequin, and feather work. Lastly, it had stage impact. The gown was so spectacularly done, I would have guessed it was from Elie Saab Haute Couture, but no, it came from designer Virgilio Madinah. Gorgeous.SCORE: 9.95
2. Miss Grand Indonesia Aurra Karishma--OK, first of all, this was probably THE SEXIEST EVENING GOWN (if you could even call it a gown!) of the pageant. When Aurra came out, I literally gasped because you have got to have a 99.999999% fat-free body, and have EVERY millimeter of your body be...PERFECTION. And Aurra's was. I think even Cher blushed when she saw this dress on this woman! On top of getting my "Sexiest Dress" award, it was impacting, and dare I say, rather gorgeous...in a SUPER HOT SEXY way. "The Aurora Dress", as it is named, was designed and created by Wiki Wu 5 Prive Atelier Jakarta.SCORE: 9.90

3. Miss Grand Guatemala Ivana Batchelor--Ivana's choice of this strapless red mirrored paillette gown was OUTSTANDING! I thought this was one of the most elegant and classy choices--among all those "Hi, I am almost naked and you can see right through my dress"-types of gowns. The red color was striking and the gown stood out for not being like (mostly) all the others. Gracias Ivana,SCORE: 9. 88

4. Miss Grand Spain Iris Miguelez Mendez--Miss Grand Spain's gown also got my attention for its supreme Elie Saab Couture-like aesthetic and gorgeous sequin work. I also liked the side overskirt drape which added silhouette drama. The gold with green sequins gown was designed and made by Thai designer GL Galarte Design. It was one of my top favorites.SCORE: 9.75

5. Miss Grand Thailand Nam Patcharaporn Chantarapadit--Miss Grand Thailand gave you FIERCE DIVA GOWN DRAMA...with this white-colored creation for the Miss Grand International 2020-2021 Preliminary Competition. When she came on, she showcased this gown which featured a sequined high-neck silhouette with an "over-cape" of white feathers. Instantly, she gave you old-school Italia Alta Moda with such a structured asymmetrical look. Just with that, I thought "OK, she's got my attention". But then, she went ahead and flipped the feathered side cape, and revealed red, white, and blue sequined designs in the colors of the Thai flag. How do you say "GO GIRL!" in Thai??? The gown was designed by Myriad Grand Monde and deserves a bow from me.SCORE: 9.74
6. Miss Grand Ecuador Sonia Augusta Luna--Mis Grand Ecuador went with Classic--a classic sequined gown--and I LOVED IT! I really liked this gold-and-silver off-the-shoulder sequined gown worn by Miss Grand Ecuador. The design, done by  Deyalis Picado , fit perfect and struck an elegant "I am at the Academy Awards Red Carpet" tone.SCORE: 9.50
7. Miss Grand Japan Ruri Saji--Ruri wore this sexy golden gown for the Miss Grand International Preliminaries. I thought this was a great choice. Besides the striking gold and silver sequin work and silhouette, I mostly appreciated the "unusual" details on her waist/side which led to the golden side gown skirt. The gown, designed by Filipino designer Louis Pangilinanhad elements of Runway, Red Carpet, and Pageant; the perfect combination. If there was any complaint...yes kids, it's those over-the-top distracting platform pumps; nothing says "I'm not as tall as I would like to be" as those.SCORE: 9.35

8. Miss Grand Puerto Rico Fabiola Valentin--In a dress designed by Puerto Rican designer Valdy , I thought Miss Grand Puerto Rico looked amazing. The ivory sequined gown showcased her perfect figure and featured intricate sequin work throughout. Was it two minutes away from a fabulous "Swan Lake" sexy figure skating costume--the long gown version? Si, but I still think Fabiola looked fabulosa and the gown was one of my top 15 favorites. SCORE: 9.30

9. Miss Grand Kenya Irene Ng'endo--I liked Irene's gown for its elegance and stage impact, but I have to be honest...I think Irene is THE STAR here; she made this gown be FABULOUS because she is STUNNING and fabulous herself. Nevertheless, the gown, designed and created by NapaCloth featured green and gold sequin work, with emerald-colored stain trim and deep green chiffon dramatic back capes. The overall effect was: QUEEN, huney! SCORE: 9.25
10. Miss Grand United States of America Abena Appiah--Speaking of QUEEN...Bow down to Miss Grand United States of America Abena Appiah in this golden gown designed especially for her by Thailand designer THEE-SI Couture Bangkok. The bright yellow (one of the Pantone colors of 2021) gown featured Thai-inspired embroidery and sequin detail, a chic column base, back cape, and Pagoda-like shoulder on the one sleeve. The designer said they had to hand-dye the "nude" illusion to match Abena's skin color. I thought it was a stage-impacting gown that while it may have a bit overdesigned, still brought an homage to the Thai audience and hosts. But, again, Abena really made it fabulous; she gave an aura of an Empress that we all had to bow down to.SCORE: 9.20

12. Miss Grand Vietnam Nguyen Le Ngoc Thao--Miss Grand Vietnam's gown was one of those that used DRAMA as a way of making a strong stage impact. The design featured a nude-colored illusion base with silver sequin applique shaped like icicles in the column-fitted gown with a super-high slit. A very wide overskirt done in many, many yards of silk Habotai, added the dramatic effect, as the Vietnamese beauty came onstage and fluttered it to make her entrance. She looked regal and quite impressive. The gown, designed by Linh San Couture , looked expensive and well-made.SCORE: 9.00
13. Miss Grand Argentina Mariana Varela--Miss Grand Argentina was trained by the same team that trains Miss Venezuela's and from her runway, stage presence, and overall hair-and-makeup effect, it showed. On top of all this, she also enlisted Venezuelan designer Nidal Nouaihed  (who designs many gowns for various Venezuelan titleholders) to create the royal blue sequined and feathered gown she wore. The gown featured a completely beaded fit-and-flare dress with silver sequins framing her front torso and neckline, ending in a splash of feathers from the knees down to the hem. For dramatic effect, the gown also included an overskirt in organza completely covered in feathers and crystals. She walked in with the overskirt...until she removed it. SCORE: 8.99
14. Miss Grand Philippines Samantha Mae Bernardo--Another gown that featured feathers was this emerald green one worn by Miss Grand Philippines. The dress was designed by Filipino designer Louis Pangilinan, who also outfitted Miss Grand Japan whose Preliminaries gown I also liked. Samantha's dress featured a sexy fitted shape, highlighting her shape at the neckline, bust, and upper torso. It had a super-high side slit and was completely covered in crystals and beads, ending in a feathered flourish. She looked like a fabulous music star ready for her Vegas show!SCORE: 8.95
Finally... 15. Miss Grand Panama Angie Keith--Yes kids, first it was a gown...and then with a *woosh!*, the skirt was GONE!!!! I had to include Miss Grand Panama's gown because it was such an "Oh No She Didn't" moment! At first, when she came out, the design featured a golden sequin bustier top with a stiffened peplum, with (what seemed like) an attached canary yellow skirt. But at the very moment that she announced herself....BOOM! She ripped her skirt from the top portion of her gown. It was A MOMENT...and I was here for it! Even though it was very cheeky, slightly tacky-licious, I LOVED IT! Just when you think fabulous Drag Queens are the only ones that allowed moments like this...think again! Bravo! The gown was designed by Venezuelan designer Marcos Mejia.SCORE: 8.90

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss Grand International 2020 National Costumes: TOP 15 BEST COSTUMES!

Best of the Best--Miss Grand International 2020 National Costumes--(Top Photo, L to R) Miss Grand Ecuador, Miss Grand Indonesia, Miss Grand Guatemala, Miss Grand Panama; (Lower Photo, L to R) Miss Grand Japan, Miss Grand Spain, Miss Grand Thailand, Miss Grand Philippines.
The Finals of the 8th Annual Miss Grand International, Miss Grand International 2020 pageant are happening this weekend on March 27th. This is the FIRST of the top "Grand Slam" international beauty pageants that have been able to actually go ahead and put on the show--a LIVE SHOW!-- during the Covid pandemic. The much-awaited National Costume Competition occurred on March 24th and there were LOTS of fabulous costumes on display. The designs were inspiring, fashionable, fantasy fabulous, and each and every one of them showed off their individual nation's pride. Here were my TOP 15 FAVORITES!
1. Miss Grand Guatemala Ivana Batchelor--Her costume titled "Xecul Occidental", beautifully depicts and pays homage to the Church of San Andres Xecul, which mixes Christian and Mayan religious imagery with lots of bright colors, including golden yellow, deep reds, and sky blues. The costume was gorgeous, impacting, and best of all, Ivana walked in it and displayed it with great ease and pride. Designed by Guatemalan designer and artist Cesar Alejandro Portillo , her costume was a work of costume art.SCORE: 10

2. Miss Grand Indonesia Aurra Karishma--Her national costume represents one of the favorite Indonesian dishes--the Chicken Satay!! Titled the "Edacious of Chicken Satay", it represents the rich food culture in Indonesia. It features skewers of Chicken satay on the grill (!!) accompanied by an assortment of add-ons such as shallots, chili, lime. It was created by Jember Fashion Carnaval
SCORE: 9.98

3. Miss Grand Japan Ruri Saji--Miss Grand Japan's National Costume was super creative and super fabulous. She first presented herself as a traditional Kokeshi Doll, which then proceeded to open up and reveal an Anime Robot! Seriously! The part Wooden Doll/Part Robot was inspired by the handmade wooden Kokeshi dolls to showcase traditional Japanese art, as well as the Anime Robot which symbolizes how far Japanese technology has come since the 19th century. The design was created by Filipino designer Don Cristobal SCORE: 9.90
4. Miss Grand Ecuador Sonia Augusta Luna--Miss Grand Ecuador's national costume pays tribute to the Andean Condor, also known as the "King of the Andes". The condor is a symbol of Ecuadorian identity and she wanted to bring light to the beautiful bird and the importance of stressing its conservation and prevent its extinction. It was designed by Benyamin Maffare.SCORE: 9.89
5. Miss Grand USA Abena Appiah--Showing support for Black Lives Matter as well as Strength, Power, Integrity, and Honor, was Miss Grand USA's message in her national costume. I thought it was so impactful and beautifully done that she gave me the costume shivers while she entered the stage! The design started as a full-length black coat (top photo) with the names and photos of those who have died. As she removed the coat, she revealed an all-white sequined Angel/Goddess costume gown with the American flag hand-painted on it. The incredibly poignant and poetic design was done by Philippines-based Vest Alternative Apparel designer @vabylitalantican. Bravo.SCORE: 9.85
6. Miss Grand Panama Angie Keith--Miss Grand Panama's exuberant costume is a fantasy bird/Carnival Diva Queen representing, as she says "Bridge of the world, the heart of the universe. This is how Panama is defined".  The Zaracundé dance which Miss Grand Panama is paying tribute to with this costume invites people to travel the isthmus of Panama surrounded by oceans through a sample of music and dances; it's an African-American dance that represents the escape of the Mamá Grande with her many children and recalls how Afro-descendants rebelled and fled from masters and slavers. Yes, all that rolled into one outstanding costume. It was designed and created by Samuel E Villareal C. SCORE: 9.80
7. Miss Grand Thailand Nam Patcharaporn Chantarapadit--Miss Grand Thailand paid tribute to the iconic Floating Market of Siam. The floating market, on a river, is a form of selling and trading goods for the Thai, and the Floating Market of Siam is iconic for being a symbol of Thailand. In this complete costume look, Miss Grand Thailand wears an intricate sequined Thai costume, a Couture version of the straw hat and she is literally riding a paddleboat, mimicking then river market vendors hawking various kinds of fruits. It is a perfect reflection of the story of the Thai way of life and an ingenious way to show a national costume. It was made by Art Akarat.SCORE: 9.75
8. Miss Grand Belarus Polli Cannabis--Of this "untraditional" Belarussian costume, Polli said that normally a representative from Belarus would wear a traditional folkloric costume as a national costume, and for the pageant, she wanted to change it up a bit. She wanted to "speak loud about the culture and traditions" of her country, and for that, she found a team of local designers to create a big and inspiring costume, a more creative fantasy costume, not a copy of the real one. The wings on the costume include a mechanism that makes them move and close in the shape of the sun, something that she says has never ever been done in Belorussian national costumes. But unfortunately during the delivery process, the moving mechanism broke. I still think the entire costume was impressive and impactful enough to be one of my top 15.SCORE: 9.50

9. Miss Grand Colombia Natalia Manrique Aguilar--This stunning costume worn by Miss Grand Colombia is named "Turpial of the Colombian Waters", in honor of the more than 250 bird species in extinction and more than 490 that live in the northern territory of Santander. The Yellow Toche is the national bird of this territory, specifically in the Andean region of Colombia. Created with French mesh/tulle, hand-placed sequins, and applique as well as pheasant and rooster feathers to create the wings and back overskirt "tail", utilizing over 450 feathers of varying colors. Designed and created by Diana Rolando , it was definitely one of the top standouts of this type of costume at Miss Grand International.SCORE: 9.45
10. Miss Grand Spain Iris Miguelez Mendez--One word: Ole! This stunning red Sevillana costume takes the traditional Spanish costume to an Haute Couture runway level...and ME GUSTA! Designed by Jose Manuel Valencia Cadena , gown is BEYOND fabuloso with its tiers of ruffles, including yards and yards of pleated ones. The dramatic train added an impactful silhouette and the final accessory touches of the gorgeous fan and outstanding crown/headdress took it to a DIVA stage moment.SCORE: 9.40
11. Miss Grand Sri Lanka Prathisha Sambodhi Liyana Arachchi--This costume stunned in its overall effect mixing traditional costume with uber-luxe sequined embroidered fabrications, perfect fit, and that incredible headdress. The impact and outcome were one of a goddess coming down from her throne atop a mountain, ready to COSTUME DEVOUR everyone in her sight! Even though it might have lacked the big wings, feathers, or built-in paddleboat/kabob skewer contraption, it still made a very strong impact.SCORE: 9.35
12. Miss Grand Philippines Samantha Mae Adaliga Bernardo--Samantha's "Agila" costume, represents the Philippines' national bird, the Philippine Eagle. The costume was done to create awareness that the eagle is critically endangered due to loss of habitat because of deforestation. Designed by Patrick Isorena , the gold he says, represents richness, extravagance, and more importantly, the golden Miss Grand International crown. I thought the costume had a stage impact, was very Victoria's Secret "Angels" sexy, and the wing mechanism worked perfectly.SCORE: 9.25

13. Miss Grand Nicaragua Teresa Janette Pérez Moreno--Entitled "Filigrana Precolombina", this colorful costume is an homage to Precolumbian Nicaragua with its head-to-toe sequin costume, bubblegum pink feathers, and Native motifs. The outstanding Nicaraguan national costume was created by Nicaraguan designer Carlos Nicaragua with the help of designer Eduard Vasquez and was probably the best showcasing this Pre-Colombian theme.SCORE: 9.10

14. Miss Grand Myanmar “Han Lay” Thaw Nandar Aung--Miss Grand Myanmar 2020 Han Lay is wearing the National Costume titled "The Goddess of Peace". The beautiful golden-colored costume represents the most needed solution for the current crisis in MYANMAR, “Peace.” According to the description of the design put out by Miss Grand Myanmar on her social media, this costume is creating the reflection of a Goddess of Peace who sprinkles tears of love with sprigs of Aung Tha Pyae (Eugenia plant), and symbolizes the hopefulness of peace, especially with all that is happening in the country. I thought the silhouette was quite striking and I especially loved the 3D effect of the layers on the gown skirt, as well as the beautiful gold headdress.SCORE: 9.10

15. Miss Grand Nigeria Chikaodili Enobong Nna-Udosen--I loved Miss Grand Nigeria's costume and presentation, and therefore I added her to my Top 15 List of Best National Costumes. The look represents the diversity of cultures, entertainment, and people of Nigeria, exemplified by the high fashion-worthy (super) high-low skirt with a dramatic train and the billowy (and very much on-trend) puff sleeves, and sequined top panel. The headdress, drums, and gold leg accessory finished the total look. Designed and created by Henry Hill.SCORE: 9.00

FIDM DEBUT.....FIDM DEBUT Runway Show: The Photo Recap!

The "New" FIDM DEBUT SHOW--Models in designs from FIDM Advanced Study in Fashion graduates, FIDM DEBUT 2020 Show, Cooper Design Space Downtown L.A.

Every year, around March, is when the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising/FIDM holds its PREMIER Fashion Show Extravaganza, the DEBUT Show. The DEBUT Show involves the culmination of work from graduates from the FIDM Advanced Fashion Design Program as well as students in the Theatre Costume Design Program. It is their chance to show their work on a grand stage. The show has taken place at Santa Monica's Barker Hangar for many years, involving a production worthy of a major Hollywood film or TV show--with over 40 models, producers, directors, choreographers, dancers, make-up and hair, dressers...hundreds of people.

Guess what happened last March right as we were getting ready to start the production for the 2020 edition? California enacted a lock-down due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. As Co-Chairs of the FIDM Fashion Design Department, David Paul and myself, as well as the college directors, decided that we had to cancel, or better said, "postpone" the show until further notice. The students were devastated as you can imagine yet there was nothing we could do. This also happened to many other top design schools that normally would also be holding their Graduate Fashion Shows; all were canceled across the U.S. and internationally. We spent the next 10 months waiting for a chance...a window of opportunity to somehow put the show on. But how?

Cooper Design Space Downtown Los Angeles--During November of 2020, after looking at many, many spaces and runway show ideas (Digital? Virtual?), we came upon an amazing space in Downtown L.A. on the 11th floor of the Cooper Building. It offered lots of space (for runway/social distancing) and a great industrial/large loft look. After minimizing the models, Covid-safety protocols, and lots of production ZOOM meetings...we did it!Many THANK YOU's to the Cooper Building/Cooper Design Space; Barbara Bundy VP of Education/FIDM and Executive Producer of the FIDM DEBUT Show; Gene LeBrock, Executive Director of FIDM Productions, Chair of FIDM Digital Cinema Program, and Producer of the FIDM DEBUT Show; Susan Koziak Productions, Choreographer of the FIDM DEBUT Show, and LA Models.
