ICE STYLE.....2023 U.S. Figure Skating Championships COSTUMES: The WOMEN!

Costume Stars on Ice--Senior Women Skaters at the 2023 U.S. Figure Skating Championships San Jose (L to R) Josephine Lee, Bradie Tennell, Isabeau Levito, and Bradie Tennell
This past week was the 2023 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. They were held in San Jose California and I had the pleasure of attending over the weekend, along with my Skating Fan Partner-in-Crime (and hubby) David Paul.
Skating Boys--Nick Verreos and David Paul at the 2023 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, SAP Center San Jose
We both LOVE figure skating and were excited that the Nationals were being held in San Jose--a short flight from our L.A. home so...we had to buy tickets and attend!
Nick Verreos with skating fans (and fans of "Project Runway" and my blog) from South Dakota (L) and Designer/Owner of The Well Dressed Skater (R)--SAP Center San Jose
As we spent many hours in the Arena watching the competitions, I ran into several fans of figure skating and more importantly, my Figure Skating Costumes BLOG here. They all asked if I was going to do a Blog Post so...here we go:
Let's start with some of my faves of Women's Costumes:

Isabeau Levito, Free Skate to Dulsea Si Tandra Mea Fiara (My Sweet and Tender Beast) by Catalina Caraus, Eugen Doga--Isabeau took the Gold at the 2023 U.S. Nationals and she was perfection! The costume above is what she wore for her Free Skate. I loved the ombre-shaded blue design which featured a split skirt, and hints of hand-painted feathers, highlighted by gold applique and sequins throughout. The costume was modern, elegant, and looked high-end couture.
Short Program to Una Noche Mas by Yasmin Levy--I also loved this Spanish-inspired costume that she wore for her Short Program. As we all know, the whole black and red flamenco diva look is tried and true and is difficult to refresh, but here it was done with delicate style touches. I thought the asymmetrical neckline and hem, nude paneling, and sequined neck were quite chic and "adult" for her but my favorite details were those fluttering red petals that were delicately sewn as if falling on her.
Bradie Tennell Short Program to Michigan 7 by Kirill Richter--The music is a haunting piano piece and her costume was perfect for it. I loved the modern, clean lines. When Bradie came out on the ice, the black-and-yellow-ombre-dyed costume made for a stark and very chic contrast to the white ice she was skating on. I thought the silhouette was perfect for her long neck and lean figure.

Free Skate to Selections from The Four Seasons by Vivaldi--For her Free Skate, Bradie wore this very pretty costume featuring blue, lavender, red, and yellow hues with sparkling crystal stones throughout, created by French company Astraee Couture. I liked how the top had what looked like lightning exploding from the stones and especially appreciated the beautiful sequined back detail.
Amber Glenn Free Skate to Without You by Ursine Vulpine and Annaca--Another favorite costume from the 2023 U.S. Nationals was the one worn by Amber Glenn for her Free Skate. The design was ethereal with its delicately draped merlot red bodice, and grey-blue shaded floaty skirt. The extra details of crystals, front criss-cross straps, and wristband...as well as her braided hairstyle finished the look beautifully.
Short Program to Hit the Road Jack (RayCharles Cover) by 2WEI Featured Artist Bri Bryant--Amber looked HOT in this bodysuit design worn for her Short Program. I loved how modern and rock & roll the look was, especially with the intricate sequined "swirls" and sheer panels. This was almost something I could see in a Versace runway show; she was ready to slay the ice in this design--and with that FIERCE eyeliner and slick ponytail!

Josephine Lee Free Skate to Carmina Burana by Carl Orff--I was blown away by how striking and gorgeous Josephine looked in this red costume from Lisa McKinnon . The design featured a second-skin-fitting bodice and fluttery asymmetrical skirt with STUNNING branch-like crystal applique which seemed to crawl down her torso. Oh, and yes, the open back was great too!
Short Program to Letting Go by Saara Aalto--Another beautiful design from Lisa McKinnon was featured in a look for Josephine's Short Program. I loved the delicate draping, soft lilac color, and sheer sequined illusion panels; it looked couture-like and perfectly gorgeous for the softly lyrical music.
Starr Andrews Short Program to Dancing With The Devil by Demi Lovato--Wearing a Custom Lisa McKinnon design, Starr commands attention in this fire-red bodysuit with silver sequin details. The design fit her body like a second skin and the crystal applique elongated and highlighted her silhouette as well as making her look like a fiery and devilish STAR out on the ice.

Free Skate to Je Suis Malade--I loved this nude-and-blue colored costume that Starr wore for her Free Skate. Once again Lisa McKinnon strikes costume gold with this look. The design featured a plunging neckline, sheer sleeves, and STUNNING sequin crystal details throughout the torso. The nude and blue colors were fabulous, all adding to a very high-end-looking design. If you want to pay good money for a skating costume, it should look like this!
Ava Ziegler--I wanted to add Ava Ziegler and both her costumes for her Free Skate (L) and Short Program (R). Both costumes were pretty great but I especially loved the blush-and-silver sequined look worn for her Short Program to Rebirth by Hi-Finesse, Natacha Atlas. I thought this costume in particular gave me high fashion vibes and looked runway-ready with its blush-pink tone and that incredible "mirrored" jeweled sequin torso.

Elsa Cheng Free Skate to Queen's Gambit Soundtrack--Marking her senior debut at this year's Nationals, Elsa looked lovely in this costume...so much so that it made an impression on me as a spectator in the Arena and therefore, I wanted to briefly talk about it. The blue-shaded costume featured an ombre dye effect--from light at the bodice to darker at the waist and hips, a fluttery skirt, and really beautiful pearl-like crystals throughout. It was both pretty and high-end looking--a definite Senior Women's Costume for a new Senior Woman!
Audrey Shin Free Skate to The Offering, The Giving, and Heroes by Michael W. Smith--One of the prettiest costumes at the Senior Women's Finals at the 2023 U.S. Nationals was this coral and peach design worn by Audry Shin. The costume, designed and created by The Well Dressed Skater featured a sweetheart neckline, nude illusion top-and-arms panels, and delicately gathered bust/torso. The ombre shading was so pretty along with the gorgeous crystal work.
Michelle Lee Short Program to The Chronicles of Narnia--Michelle wore this costume--designed by The Well Dressed Skater--for her Short Program, and once again, as a spectator of the event, I made a mental note of how much I liked it! The light lemon yellow and lilac colored costume featured a design silhouette mimicking a corset bodice, a v-neck with gathered inset, short puffy sleeves, and pretty crystal work throughout. There were obvious hints of Period-like costumes about it but also seemed fashionable at the same time.
Gabriella Izzo Free Skate to Elena & Lila by Max Richter, Orlando: Memory is the Seamstress by Max Richter, and November by Mari Samuelsen, Max Richter, Cedric Tour--I liked Gabriella's costume above, which she wore for her Free Skate. The one-shoulder look was created by the French costume house of Astraee Couture. I think they did a wonderful job here, especially with the graphic and geometric-looking designs (and sequins) on the torso, which looked like abstract peacock feathers.
Lastly...
I wanted to end with this costume worn by Alexa Gasparotto--Alexa wore this for her Free Skate to Family (from Dreamgirls) by Jamie Foxx, Anika Noni Rose, Beyonce, Jennifer Hudson, and Keith Robinson. The minute she stepped on the ice, I could not take my eyes off her. The costume, designed by Juju Designs , was very "Dreamgirls" splashy and sparkly (of course!) with its vibrant blue and ivory colors, beautiful crystals, and fringe skirt trim. The blue airbrushing was cool and so was how effective all that fringe was as she skated. Not sure if she needed that eye makeup along with the costume, but hey, maybe in this instance: "more is more" is the way to go!

UP NEXT: THE MEN!

FIDM MUSEUM.....Art of Costume Design in Film Exhibition: The COSTUMES, Opening Night...RUNS UNTIL JUNE 4th!

Presenting Costumes!--Nick Verreos, at the Opening Night Party for the "Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum
Back in March, the highly anticipated "Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition returned to the  FIDM Museum ! The Exhibition, which for over 30 years (!) has showcased motion picture costume design (traditionally to coincide with the Academy Awards) took a hiatus due to COVID last year, but this year, it was BACK! This year's exhibition features the FIVE Academy Award Nominees for Best Costume Design from the films "Cruella", "Cyrano", "Dune", "Nightmare Alley", and "Westside Story", as well as costumes from 17 other films...in total 70+ costumes on display, and runs until June 4th...

Here are photos from the fabulous exhibition, starting with the five Academy Award Best Costume Design Nominees, including the winning costumes from "Cruella" by Costume Designer Jenny Beavan:

"Cruella", Costume Designer Jenny Beavan--The costume designer won her third Academy Award for her 1970's London Punk-inspired costumes-- "Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum

The "Fire" Dress from "Cruella", Costume Designer Jenny Beavan--This gorgeous gown was inspired by the 1955 "Tree Ball Gown"(named after client Mariette Peabody Tree) by American couturier Charles James (left photo)-- "Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum
"Westside Story", Costume Designer Paul Tazewell--The yellow dress worn by actress Ariana DeBose (far left) was colored lilac in the original 1961 film. Tazewell decided to make it sun-like yellow for the remake to signify that her character "Anita" was the "Center of the Neighborhood" with everything and everybody gravitating towards her, like the sun--"Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum Photo courtesy of Alex J. Berliner/ABImages
"Nightmare Alley", Costume Designer Luis Sequeira--The seedy Carnival world and elegant early 1940s NY city world are showcased through Sequeira's costumes. Cate Blanchett's looks were inspired by 1930s Sketchbooks that the costume designer had--"Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum Photo courtesy of Alex J. Berliner/ABImages
"Dune", Costume Designers Jacqueline West, Robert Morgan--The costumes from "Dune" were some of my FAVORITE from this past year's films. According to Jacqueline West, there are many inspirations for the film's costumes including the Medieval Times, The Templars, "Lawrence of Arabia", as well as paintings by Velasquez, Giotto, and even Spanish couturier Cristobal Balenciaga--"Art of Costume in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum
From "Dune"--(L to R) Bene Gesserit Reverend Mother costume worn by Charlotte Rampling, and Stillsuit worn by Timothee Chalamet--"Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum

From "Dune"--(L to R) Costumes of Lady Jessica and the Space Guild--"Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum

"Cyrano", Costume Designers Massimo Cantini Parrini and Jacqueline Durran--Durran designed the costumed for the leading actress (left), while Cantini Parrini did the rest of the film's costumes. According to designer Massimo Cantini Parrini, the costumes were color divided depending on their classes; the nobles were in jewel tones such as emeralds, golds, and bronzes, and burgundy...while the bourgeoisie and peasant classes were in earth tones--"Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum
Besides the Academy Award-nominated costumes on display, as I mentioned, there are 17 other films and their respective costumes included in this exhibition--Here are some: "House of Gucci", Costume Designer Janty Yates--(L to R) Lady Gaga's "Patrizia Reggiani" and Adam Driver's "Maurizio Gucci"--"Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum
"Tragedy of Macbeth", Costume Designer Mary Zophres--Zophres said that Lady Macbeth's (center front) structured silhouettes were inspired by chess pieces, and of note, the gorgeous black-and-gold star fabric on Macbeth's cape (left, back) came from the Italian fashion house of Valentino--"Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum
"The French Dispatch", Costume Designer Milena Canonaro--Tilda Swinton's marigold-colored caftan in the back is a favorite of mine!--"Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum
"The Eyes of Tammy Faye", Costume Designers Mitchell Travers--The red dress above was from the scene featuring the infamous Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker "Nightline" interview from 1987--"Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum
"Respect", Costume Designer Clint Ramos--The blush-colored-and-pearl studded one on the right was the iconic "Amsterdam Concert" Dress, even though the original one worn by Aretha Franklin was gold (and bought off-the-rack from Saks)--"Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum
"Eternals", Costume Designer Sammy Sheldon--"Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum
"Suicide Squad", Costume Designer Judianna Makovsky--"Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum
"Last Night in Soho", Costume Designer Odile Dicks-Mireaux--"Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum
"Coming 2 America", Costume Designer Ruth E. Carter--"Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum
"Spencer", Costume Designer Jacqueline Durran (with some images I found of the possible inspirations and designs Princess Diana actually wore)--"Art of Costume Design in Film" Exhibition, FIDM Museum

PROJECT RUNWAY.....Season 19 Project Runway - THE FINALE: Behind The Scenes Photo Recap!

Season 19 Reunion--Nick Verreos and David Paul pose with designers from Season 19 "Project Runway"--Finale of Season 19 Bravo's Project Runway, NYFW at The Shed

It's FINALE TIME!!! After 13 episodes...16 designers...and months of filming...months of designing...it's time for the FINALE of Season 19 of Bravo's "Project Runway"! In the previous episode, the final four designers - all women (for the first time in "Project Runway" history!) - got to go home for several months to work on their final collections consisting of ten looks, that they would then show at New York Fashion Week

Finale of Season 19 Bravo's Project Runway, NYFW at The Shed
As Consulting Producers for the show, David and I were delighted to return for the Finale, which was going to be filmed at The Shed , an Arts & Culture space (which has also been a fashion show location for previous New York Fashion Weeks) located on Hudson Yards.
Checking out The Shed at Hudson Yards, NYC
Before beginning our production duties, David and I had the chance to take advantage of an afternoon and a couple of nights we had free (A MIRACLE in TV production!) so we decided to make it a "Tourist'y" Afternoon going...and Broadway Show Nights:
Rockefeller Center--Christmas Tree and Ice Skating Rink
Broadway boys--David and I went to see 2 shows, including "Caroline or Change", which was at the former Disco Haven, Studio 54...and "Company", starring the ICON, Patti Lupone...as you can see from our smiles, we were VERY EXCITED!
But, enough of the "Nights Off"...time to get to work: Back to Consulting Producing Duties... Unboxing--Nick Verreos goes DEEP...into designer Chasity Sereal's box, to see what's inside (lots of colorful chiffon fabrics, in ziplock bags!).
One of my (many) duties as Consulting Producer, was to do "Box Checks" and check out everything the four finalists brought from home, and make sure they did not include anything they weren't supposed to...or at least, had not been approved.

We are almost coming to the "Fashion Finish Line" for this 19th Season of Bravo's "Project Runway" --Now, it's time for Episode 13, titled "The Sky Is The Limit", inspired by the NYC skyline but having a deeper meaning of directing the remaining four designers (all women!) to Design Without Limits...Show Us Who You Are!
Behind The Scenes--Nick Verreos, on the "Project Runway" stage/runway setting up the Season 19 Top 4 Retrospective Looks--Episode 13 "The Sky Is The Limit" Bravo's Season 19 Project Runway
As part of the episode, as Consulting Producers, David and I were challenged to put together a "Retrospective" of each of the designer's creations from the season. We selected the looks from each designer, steam them, made them look "presentable" and place them on a rack--and some on dress forms for display...

Stage Couture--Designs from the season, from the top four designers, displayed on the "Project Runway" stage--Episode 13 "The Sky Is The Limit" Bravo's Season 19 Project Runway
The reason for the special display was because the Finalists were going to each have a "walkthrough" with representatives/members of the CFDA/Council of Fashion Designers of America...

PROJECT RUNWAY.....Season 19 Project Runway: Episode 12 Coco Rocha Photoshoot: Photo Recap!

Coco Love--Nick Verreos with Supermodel and Super Muse--Episode 12 Coco Rocha Editorial Photoshoot Challenge Season 19 Bravo's Project Runway

For the 12th episode of Season 19 Bravo's "Project Runway", a very special guest was invited to be the Design--and Photo Muse--for the remaining designers: The fabulous Supermodel Coco Rocha! The challenge was an Editorial Photoshoot Challenge, so who better than to exemplify this than Designer and "Project Runway" Mentor Christian Siriano's friend and Runway Show "Closer", Miss Coco Rocha!

Christian and Coco--Designer and "Project Runway" Mentor Christian Siriano and Coco Rocha

Coco is known as a Catwalk Diva, of course, but she is also known for her incredible editorial photoshoots where she contorts herself into Couture-level body poses (just like she does on the runway!)--just the perfect canvas for this week's challenge.

Here's my Photo Recap of the episode:

After they found out what the Challenge was: To create an original Editorial Look for Coco Rocha to be photographed for a Fashion Shoot...the designers got to chose A PROP for their individual photo shoots. Our wonderful props and the art department had set up a ladder, fans, dumpster bucket, "crime" tape, fake plants, pallets, chair, portable street delineators...you name it, it was there:

We filmed the episode on what was probably THE HOTTEST DAY in Brooklyn/NY this past Summer--in fact, it was one of the highest temperatures recorded! And not only was it hot...if you have spent time in Brooklyn/NYC during the Summer months...you also know it was HUMID and VERY NASTY! Oh, and did I mention the actual photoshoot was shot on a non-air-conditioned warehouse? Yep. And as Consulting Producers, David and I were sweating right along with everyone else. It must be said, Coco was INCREDIBLE! Never complained, always professional: A class act!
David was a fabulous "photoshoot helper" helping Coco and the designs look their best--especially the ones with dramatic back capes or trains, as we tried to do a "backstage"/behind the scenes photoshoot ourselves...

Haute Hair...That's the theme for the 11th episode of Season 19 Bravo's "Project Runway". For this week's challenge, young up-and-coming stylists from the TRESemme Future Stylists Fund - a fund created for advancing Black Women in the Haircare Industry - were invited to help create fabulous runway-and-editorial worthy hairstyles inspired by the fashion designs (and vice versa)...Some of the hairstyles eventually created with the fashion included Bantu knots, creative braids, finger waves, and afro puffs.

PROJECT RUNWAY.....Season 19 Project Runway: Episode 10 Real Housewives Challenge: Photo Recap!

Glam Housewives--(L to R) Luann de Lesseps (Real Housewives of New York City), Gizelle Bryant (Real Housewives of Potomac), Dr. Wendy Osefo (Real Housewives of Potomac) in designs from (L to R) Shantall Lacayo, Aaron Michael and Kristina Kharlashkina--Bravo's Project Runway Episode 10 "Real Housewives" Challenge

For the 10th Episode of Season 19 Bravo's "Project Runway", the challenge was the "Real Client" Challenge--where the designers have to work with "real" clients (as opposed to designing for their models) and create an original design. This time, their clients were some of the fabulous women of the "Real Housewives" franchise...

Real Fabulous Clients--Mentor Christian Siriano introduces the "Real Housewives" clients to the "Project Runway" Designers--Bravo's Project Runway Episode 10 "Real Housewives" Challenge
They were Gina Kirschenheiter and Shannon Beador of "The Real Housewives of  Orange County", Gizelle Bryant, Dr. Wendy Osefo, and "Grande Dame" Karen Huger of "The Real Housewives of Potomac", and Leah McSweeney and Luann de Lesseps from "The Real Housewives of New York City"

The Design Challenge was to create the "ultimate" Reunion Look for the Housewives, with the designers making sure to take note of their client's wishes and demands, as well as staying true to their own design aesthetic...Here are Behind-The-Scenes photos I took as a Consulting Producer from the Episode...

ICE STYLE.....Beijing Olympics 2022 FIGURE SKATING COSTUMES: PAIRS!

Costume Pairs--(L to R) Ashley Cain-Gribble and Timothy LeDuc of the USA and Wenjing Sui and Cong Han of China--Beijing 2022 Olympics Pairs Figure Skating Competitions

Completing my Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics Figure Skating Costumes RECAP "Ice Style" BLOG, it is now time to discuss the final discipline and competition, the PAIRS! If you missed my others...

Click HERE for the MEN...Click HERE for the ICE DANCE...and Click HERE for the WOMEN!

Let's begin with the Gold medalists from CHINA:

Wenjing Sui and Cong Han CHINA Short Program--Skating to Mission Impossible 2 Orchestra Suite: Part 1 by Hans Zimmer--a Flamenco style music--they wore these FABULOSO costumes seen above. The designs looked luxe, elegant, and obviously inspired by the Spanish Flamenco-style music. Wenjing's black costume had intricate silver sequin applique and a nude illusion "plunging" front neckline as well as "open" back. But it was Cong Han who was THE STAR here in his Matador-inspired look of beaded cropped Toreador jacket, skin-tight black pants, and white shirt. Ole!9.75
Free Skate to Bridge Over Troubled Water by Paul Simon, performed by Lina Eder, and Bridge Over Troubled Water by Paul Simon, performed by John Legend--For their Gold medal-winning Free Skate, they went more delicate, soft, and pretty when it came to their costumes, very appropriate looks to go with the music. I thought they looked just the way a traditional Olympic Pairs skating duo should look...to win a Gold. She wore a stunningly beaded silver and white costume with an ombre-dyed blue overskirt that perfectly matched the "Beijing 2022" blue boards in the background. He contrasted her look with a deep midnight blue outfit featuring a delicately sequined shirt.9.25

Evgeniya Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov ROC Short Program--For their Short Program to Metamorphosis Two by Philip Glass, Experience by Ludovico Einaudi, Tarasova and Morozov looked like the Olympic versions of Romeo and Juliet in these costumes. I especially liked her blue costume which featured a gathered bust, crystals highlighting the seams, and silver sequined "straps" wrapping around her midriff. It was both Period-style and High Fashion.8.99

Free Skate to Lighthouse by Patrick Watson--Their Free Skate costumes were done in pink and light purple/gray hues with ombre shading and crystals. I wasn't a fan of these (as much as their Short Program costumes). I thought they were a bit "muddy" looking and I didn't understand the silver and black detail in their front chest sections.7.99
Anastasia Mishina and Aleksandr Galliamov ROC Short Program--Skating to Variations on the ballet Esmeralda by Cesare Pugni, arranged by Alexander Goldshtein, Mishina and Galliamov embraced the costume aspect with gusto! The ballet itself is inspired by the novel Notre-Dame de Paris and involves a beautiful Romani girl Esmeralda and Captain Phoebus, her love interest. Anastasia looks beautiful in this strawberry-colored costume with side sequin embellishment and Aleksandr is dashing in his Captain uniform/outfit featuring a matching strawberry-colored neck scarf.9.25

Free Skate to The Snowstorm by Georgi Sviridov, The Snowstorm (The Vocal Octet) by Georgi Sviridov performed by Valeria Staroverova, and Time, Forward! by Georgi Sviridov--For their Free Skate at the Pairs Competition, they wore these lavender colored costumes with crystal details. I really liked the delicate ombre shading of the lilac/lavender colors and especially loved the way the sequin embellishment was done on both of their costumes. I appreciated the slight design detail on Aleksandr's collar in that one side was a Notch Collar and the other was a Shawl. 9.20

BTW: This is what they wore to the Team Competition Pairs Free Skate: They wore more elaborate costumes for their Free Skate during the Team Competition. These were much more "Baroque" and gaudy, especially when compared to the ones they wore in their Individual Pairs skate. One thing (kind of) stayed the same and that was his Notch/Shawl Collar design detail.
Aleksandra Boykova and Dmitrii Kozlovskii ROC Short Program--For their Short program, Boykova and Kozlovskii skated to Swan Lake by Petr I. Tchaikovski. They looked like two ballet dancers from the Bolshoi in these dramatic, elegant designs. Dmitrii's shirt was gorgeous in its black with silver crystal applique and see-through arm/shoulder panels but it was Aleksandra who really gave you Couture Black Swan in this stunning design with fabulous sequin embroidery at the front bust/torso, and luxe lace skirt detail.
9.50
Free Skate to Malaguena by Ernesto Lecuona--Fiery, Andalucian Style was the costume theme here, as seen on the designs worn by Boykova and Kozlovskii. She wore a fire red dress with side draped wrap skirt and gold embroidery, and he was "Matador Lite" in black pants and an elegant white shirt with gorgeous black sequin applique. I especially loved the red "cuff links:" detail subtly matching her fire red dress. Together they painted a very strong image on the ice.9.30

Cheng Peng and Yang Jin CHINA Short Program--Skating to Piano & I: Moonlight Sonata by L. v. Beethoven, performed by Alicia Keys, No One by Alicia Keys, the Chinese Pairs team wore these deep lavender-and-blue colored costumes. Hers featured ocean wave-like sequined "scrolls" throughout her upper torso and arms, along with an almost see-through midriff, and ombre-shaded skirt. But it was Yang Jin who was a standout in that delicately draped top with sequins and matching ombre shading. 9.15

Free Skate to Exile To Snowy West from The Banquet soundtrack by Tan Dun, Only For Love from The Banquet soundtrack by Tan Dun, Sword Dance from The Banquet soundtrack by Tan Dun--These costumes were FABULOUS! I loved everything about these designs and how they paid homage to the beautiful score and Chinese culture. Her lilac-colored costume was sweet in its design but featured a very impacting sequin applique radiating from the waist to the rest of the body.  His look was OUTSTANDING with its vibrant red top and impressive sequined detail. I especially loved the subtle Fuschia belt at her waist, that tied into the Fuschia trim on the collar edge of his costume. They were both classical, romantic, and chic at the same time.9.55
Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier USA Short Program--Alexa and Brandon wore these costumes for their Short Program to House of The Rising Sun by Heavy Young Heathens. I thought these looks were impactful and strong with their colors and stylings. I loved her barely-there sexy red and nude illusion costume with black bands and stunning gold jeweled studs. Oh, and yes, Brandon looked great too with his subtly shaded black and red top and black pants. These were designed and custom-created by the fabulous Lisa McKinnon .9.55
Free Skate to Fix You by Fearless Soul, Coldplay, Redemption Through Love by Karl Hugo--Another fabulous design from Lisa McKinnon , for Alexa and Brandon, this time for their Free Skate. While Brandon was great in his lilac-hued tie-dye, Alexa was again the costumed star in this sexy nude-and-lilac dyed design with open back and GORGEOUS jewel sequin detail. It is an art and technical mastery to make these costumes, and Ms. McKinnon excels at it!9.65
Ashley Cain-Gribble and Timothy Leduc USA Short Program--Skating to The White Crow (soundtrack) by Ilan Eshkeri, performed by Lisa Batiashvili, Cain-Gribble and LeDuc wore these designs above. I loved them both! Let's start with Ashley: She wore a one-shoulder-like design with nude illusion "cut-outs" on the side and back, with blue/lilac/silver coloring and beautiful sequin details which I loved. Timothy's look was FABULOUS with his black pants and white shirt studded at the neck, shoulders, and sleeve wrists, adding a luxe look to his design. That shirt was EVERYTHING darlings!9.40
BTW:
Timothy had worn something different in past competitions (to the same program), as seen here at the NHK Trophy 2021--They had a top matching hers that mimicked the ombre dye colors as well as sequin detail. I didn't mind the look then but...I DEFINITELY like the white studded shirt more!
Free Skate to W.E. (soundtrack) by Abel Korzeniowski--For their Free Skate, both Ashley and Tim wore these costumes. The designs were one-piece jumpsuits in black with silver/gray ombre shading, highlighted by sequined lace applique embellishment. I really liked the costumes and very linear designs with a hint of Wallis Simpson's style richness (referencing the "W.E." film). But what I really ABSOLUTELY LOVED was the fact that Tim's design was literally almost the same as Ashley's, which has so much more meaning now after they announced being nonbinary--and in addition making history as the first nonbinary athlete to compete at the Winter Games. 9.45

BTW: They didn't always wear these matching jumpsuits...here at the World Figure Skating Championships 2021, Ashley wore a very traditional (and pretty) figure skating dress costume, with a skirt.
Vanessa James and Eric Radford CANADA Short Program--Vanessa and Eric skated their Short Program to Shiny Happy People performed by Ruben and The Dark & AG, Daydreamers by Karl Hugo wearing these designs above. Its creator and designer, Feeling by Mathieu Caron, described Vanessa's look as "channeling Goddess glamour in an ecru draped stretch knit dress with gold airbrush and crystal details"...and YES she is! I loved the draping and asymmetrical styling of this costume as well as the gorgeous beading. In addition, Mathieu Caron must be commended for getting the nude illusion color JUST RIGHT since many times, it's either too light or too dark on costumes I have seen on other skaters. Eric's look is equally deserving of praise for being modern and high fashion elegant and for being the perfect complement to Vanessa's. I am a BIG FAN of draping on men and here it is done beautifully.9.50
Free Skate to Falling by Harry Styles, Maelstrom by Karl Hugo--For their Free Skate costumes, Vanessa wore this super sleek and high fashion jumpsuit from ASTRAEE Couture. I thought the design certainly highlighted Vanessa's perfectly toned figure and with the addition of the well-placed and well-done crystal work, made the jumpsuit much more luxe. Eric looked minimalist chic in this navy blue silk knit turtleneck design from Feeling by Mathieu Caron .9.40

Last but not least... Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara JAPAN Short Program--Skating to Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, performed by Kathryn Dawn Lang Riku and Ryuichi wore these looks above. Hers was a baby blue halter-neck almost-sheer costume with heavy jeweled embellishment. The color and style were pretty for Riku. I also liked Ryuichi's costume of midnight blue pants and shirt with beautiful light blue (matching her color) branch-like detail on the top. 9.00
Free Skate to Woman by Shawn Phillips--For their wonderful Free Skate, they wore these black-color-based costumes above. Riku's featured an ombre-shaded overskirt with black-to-gray-to-peach colors and silver crystals throughout the front torso. I especially liked the nude illusion "open back" with what looked like sequined back "straps". Ryuichi wore an all-black consisting of pants and a modern shirt in crystal-detailed knit with a faux leather panel.9.10
BTW: Riku had previously worn a different version of the costume that had less beading and embellishment--as seen above from Skate America 2021. She also wore this particular costume for the World Championships and Autumn Classic International as well. Maybe it is the same costume, but their style team decided to bump up the sequin details!

ICE STYLE.....Beijing Olympics 2022 FIGURE SKATING COSTUMES: The WOMEN!

The Women of Beijing 2022--(L to R) Wakaba Higuchi of Japan, Kaori Sakamoto of Japan, and Alysa Liu of the USA--Beijing 2022 Olympics Women's Figure Skating
THE WOMEN! The Beijing 2022 Olympics Women's Individual Figure Skating Competition ended this past week, and while we all know all the drama that engulfed it...here, I just discuss THE COSTUMES! In case you missed it, click HERE for the MEN'S COSTUMES RECAP, and HERE for the ICE DANCE...but now it is time to discuss the Costumes of the WOMEN of Bejing 2022...
Let's begin with Kaori Sakamoto of Japan: Kaori Sakamoto JAPAN Short Program--Skating her Short Program to Now We Are Free (from "Gladiator") by Lisa Gerrard, Hans Zimmer arranged by Cedric Tour, Kaori wore this fabulous design by ASTRAEE Couture . The costume featured copper, brown, and skin-colored ombre shadings, beautifully draped details, multicolored sequins, and rich-looking jewelry. I loved how sexy as well as empowering this design was, which reminded me of the diaphanous creations of couturiers like Madama Gres and John Galliano. Kaori looks very "Cleopatra in Rome"!9.25

Free Skate to No More Fight Left In Me by Imany, Armand Amar, and Tris by Ellie Goulding, Junkie XL--This costume worn by Sakamoto for her Free Skate is one of my favorites for the women this past season. This was also designed by ASTRAEE Couture. I love the strong color, the gold, and copper jeweled sequins, and especially the crystal "stripes" and how they miter (match and meet) at the sides. Her Free Skate was choreographed to celebrate the power of women and I cannot help but think she looks very much like a FIERCE and FASHIONABLE "Wonder Woman".9.45
Wakaba Higuchi JAPAN Short Program--For her Short Program to Your Song by Ellie Goulding, Elton John, Wakaba wore this ethereal costume designed by Satomi Ito . The costume featured pretty flower-and-leaf appliques, colored crystals on a nude illusion/pastel-colored chiffon base. I thought the design was delicate and whisper-like...just the perfect costume complement to her soft and silky music; it's almost as if she was a beautiful fairy delicately skating through her little ice kingdom.9.00
Free Skate to Spirit (from "The  Lion King") by  Beyonce, Grasslands Chant, Stampede, and Remember (from "The  Lion King") by Hans Zimmer--This bold and fabulous costume worn by Wakaba was also designed by Satomi Ito and is one of my TOP favorites from this entire past season. I thought the design was Haute Couture perfection: The strong colors, the gorgeous sequin applique, the 3d texture of the feathers...this could have easily gone "Las Vegas Costume Tacky" but it didn't...this was Lion King High Fashion, and Wakaba was the LION QUEEN!9.75

Mariah Bell USA Short Program--Mariah went simple and classic this season with the costume for her Short Program to A River Flows In You by Yiruma. The design was a deep royal blue stretch velvet high-neck number void of any costume "bells & whistles" except for silver crystal trim and a plunging back. When I first saw her skate in this earlier in the season, I thought it looked a bit "straight out of a skating shop" but the more I saw her in it, its clean and classic elegance grew on me.9.00
BTW: It was also very reminiscent of Michelle Kwan's Free Skate costume during the 1998 Nagano Olympics. And being compared to Michelle Kwan is NEVER a bad thing!: Michelle Kwan at the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan in a stretch velvet costume designed by Vera Wang
Free Skate to Hallelujah performed by K.D. Lang--Mariah wore this maroon-colored costume for her "Hallelujah" Free Skate. It was nice to see her wear something a little more "fancy" than the minimalist Short Program look. This costume, which was designed by Jan Longmire, featured a mock-neck style with solid/sheer panels crystal studding, asymmetrically curving around her torso and an open back. 8.95

Alisa Liu USA Short Program--For Alysa's Short Program to Gypsy Dance (Don Quixote: Act II) by Ludwig Minkus, she wore this fire-red costume designed by Feeling/Mathieu Caron X Iconic Skatewear. I LOVED this look on Alysa from the moment she stepped on the ice. I liked the bold color, the slit-front skirt, and the beautiful aquamarine crystals and how they were displayed around the costume. The look was less Gypsy and definitely more Middle East Fantasy Princess!9.25
Free Skate to Violin Concerto in D, op. 35 by Petr I. Tchaikovski, performed by Joshua Bell--Alysa wore another design from a collaboration between  Feeling/Mathieu Caron and Iconic Skatewear , this time for her Free Skate. This baby blue costume featured a pointed bustline, neck/shoulder nude illusion, and delicate blue and silver crystal work. This was like the "pretty" and not so "spicy" cousin to her Short Program red costume. It suited the young Alysa and in addition, she looked great next to the matching blue Beijing Olympics boards! Was this planned? I'm going to give them the credit and say YES!9.10
Karen Chen USA Short Program--Skating her Short Program to Requiem for a Tower performed by Escala, arranged by Hugo Chouinard, and Requiem for a Dream performed by Jennifer Thomas, arranged by Hugo Chouinard, Karen wore this costume above. Both of her Short and Free Skate costumes were designed by her mom. This one had a black-colored base with aquamarine, turquoise, violet, and silver crystals heavily embellished down her torso. I thought it was a strong and effective costume for Karen; a more adult look for her.8.70
Free Skate to Butterfly Lovers (Violin Concerto) performed by Takako Nishizaki--While I liked the color and sequin work on this Free Skate costume of Karen's, I just think it got a little too OVER-embellished. Yes, I know, even in Figure Skating you can go too much with the crystals and need to pull back (shocker!). Instead of making the design look richer and more high-end, it almost looked like something for a little girl to be worn on her "Princess Birthday".8.50

Loena Hendrickx BELGIUM Short Program--Skating to Caruso by Lucio Dalla, performed by Lara Fabian, Loena wore this red costume from AISTARG Finland . It was bold, sexy, and had lots of details including all those straps, cut-outs, silver crystals, the asymmetrical neckline, one sleeve...While you think all those different things may have been too distracting, I didn't mind them at all; she looked more Atelier Versace and less Too-much Ice Skating Costume.9.00
Free Skate to The Mystic's Dream by Loreena McKennitt, Spirits by Chronis Taxidis, Mizmar vs Violin by Hamada Enani--One word: STUNNING! Loena wore this gold-colored design for her Free Skate. This look was a blend of Queen Nefertiti mixed in with Cleopatra, with a lot of Beyonce, and I was here for it! This is a perfect example where A LOT of sequin work in a costume can, in fact, make it look more elevated and fit for a star...on the Olympic Stage! This fabulous costume is from AISTARG Finland. 9.75
Yelim Kim REPUBLIC OF KOREA Short Program--Yelim wore this costume to her Short Program to Liebestraum by Franz Liszt, performed by Josef Bulva. The light ombre blue shaded costume had silver crystal details highlighting the underbust/Empire section, neckline as well as sleeve cuffs. The design was delicate and pretty and was a traditional costume choice for the music. I just wished her style team wouldn't go so traditional because the silhouette and style almost made her look a bit dated.8.10
Free Skate to Violin Fantasy on Puccini's Turandot by Vanessa Mae--Thank goodness Yelim saved her Costume Couture for her Free Skate! This red and gold costume was stunning in its design, intricate beading, and "Turandot"-inspired details. The details were done magnificently--from the sleeve details, the gold hem, and rich torso sequin applique. All in all, this costume looked rich and very expensive!9.25
Young You REPUBLIC OF KOREA Short Program--For her Short Program to Whirling Winds (The Leftovers soundtrack) by Ludovico Einaudi, Young You of South Korea wore this pretty deep lavender-colored costume. I liked the asymmetrical details, the one-sleeve look, open back, and delicate floaty panels that added texture and 3D interest to her costume as she skated. The sequins were also quite pretty.9.30

Free Skate to Look Down,  I Dreamed a Dream, Do You Hear The People Sing (all from Les Miserables soundtrack) by Claude Michel Schonberg, Alain Albert Boubill--Looking like a young and beautiful Cosette, was Young You in her Free Skate costume to Music from "Les Miserables". The design, done in ombre shadings from white to deep burgundy, had corset-like detailing at the torso, done in oversized jeweled crystals to mimic the boning in a traditional corset. The neckline was "off-the-shoulder", trimmed with light flouncy ruffles and nude illusion. This was a nice way of referencing the Period Costumes of the French Revolution, but in a VERY figure skating way.9.10

Kamila Valieva ROC Short Program--For her Short Program to In Memoriam by Kirill Richter, Kamila has said that she is supposed to be portraying a bird. As a result, she wears this lilac-hued costume that featured off-the-shoulder drapes, a gathered bust, ombre shading, silver crystal embellishment, a longer skirt, and matching fingerless gloves. While she skates, one does see the "bird"-like choreography and movements, and the costume helps with this but I can't help but think, the entire look could have used some editing.8.45

Free Skate to Bolero by Maurice Ravel--Skating her Free Skate to Ravel's "Bolero", Kamila wore this design above. The look had a black sequined bodysuit/dress worn over black extra long leggings, with bold red gloves to finish the look. She has stated that for this Free Skate she is supposed to represent a snake, which makes sense, especially when you focus on THAT emerald green crystal snake that looks like it is about to bite her back. 9.10
Alexandra Trusova ROC Short Program--Skating to Benediction And Dream by Elliot Goldenthal, performed by Lila Downs, Solo tu by Elliot Goldenthal, and Alcoba Azul by Elliot Goldenthal (all songs from "Frida" soundtrack), Alexandra wore this fire-red costume representing the figure skating version of Frida Kahlo. The design had black/red ombre shadings and multicolored crystals accentuating the front torso, neckline, and as well as around the waist/hips. It was an intense color on the ice making her stand out...and in addition, it matched her hair color!8.45
Free Skate to Call Me Cruella by Florence + The Machine, The True Story of Cruella's Birth by Nicholas Britell, and I Wanna Be Your Dog by John McCrea (all from "Cruella" soundtrack)--Alexandra wore this edgy black costume for her "Cruella" Free Skate. The costume certainly played on the 70's London Punk style inspiration of the movie with the faux leather, metal hardware, black gloves, and raw-hem details. 8.45
BTW: This was one of her past "Cruella" costumes: Cruella at Skate America 2021 in October 202--This one really pays more of an homage to Jenny Beavan's costumes for "Cruella" and in fact, there was an added personal touch: Alexandra had the names of all her little dogs, sewn onto the costume! Even though it is so crazy-busy in terms of design, I kind of liked it better!
Anna Shcherbakova ROC Short Program--Skating to Dangerous Affairs by Inon ZurTotal View by Inon Zur, Anna wore this costume above. The mostly all-black costume featured silver crystals throughout, nude illusion insets, and powder blue raw-edged "petals" of fabrics. I thought this was a beautiful costume and I appreciated the details, especially those pieces of fabric that added a nice 3D textured effect. I also loved the sleeve/wrist details with the raw-edged pointed fabrics as well. She almost looked as if she could have easily skated to "Black Swan" wearing this.9.00

And lastly:
Free Skate to Ruska by Apocalyptica, The Master and Margarita (soundtrack) by Igor Korneliuk, and Lacrimosa by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart performed by David Garrett--For her Free Skate, Alexandra wore this maroon-colored design that had heavy sequin applique highlighted by a gathered torso and petal-shaped skirt. What I really did not understand was the double layers of off-white-colored skirts under the maroon dress...it just didn't make any sense since that color was nowhere else to be seen.8.00
Silver, Gold, and Bronze (L to R) Alexandra Trusova of ROC, Anna Shcherbakova of ROC, and Kaori Sakamoto of Japan--Beijing 2022 Women's Individual Figure Skating Competition

ICE STYLE.....Beijing Olympics 2022 FIGURE SKATING COSTUMES: ICE DANCE!

Dance Queens and Kings--Ice Dance at the Beijing 2022 Olympics (L to R) Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue of the USA, Gabrielle Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron of France, Madison Chock and Evan Bates of USA--Ice Dance Competition, Beijing 2022 Olympics
Continuing with my "ICE STYLE" Beijing 2022 Olympics Figure Skating Costumes BLOG, I have talked about the MEN HERE , and now it is time to discuss the ICE DANCE costumes! The Ice Dance Competition culminated several days back with the exciting Free Dance Competition, making it a redemption story for the incredible French team of Papadakis and Cizeron, who at the last Winter Olympics had that infamous "wardrobe malfunction", where the back clasp of her costume came unhooked. They succeeded in winning the gold, with a powerful, moving, sublime skate that will be measured as the Rolls Royce of Ice Dance free skates for years to come.
Now, let's discuss the COSTUMES, beginning with the GOLD medalists:

Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron FRANCE Free Dance--For their Olympic gold medal-winning Free Skate to Elegie by Gabriel Faure, Gabriella wore a gold sequined costume with delicate strapping, asymmetrical detailing, and an open side front slit. It was divine and glamorous; taken to the floor, it would be the perfect Oscars Red Carpet gown. Guillaume wore black pants and a second-skin tight blood-red top with delicate crystal embellishment. Even though they didn't necessarily look like a "costume pair", I loved them both for their elegance, simplicity, and sleekness...and I also appreciated her matching red-colored lips. The costumes by Feeling by Mathieu Caron .9.50

BTW #1: Before landing on the gold-and-red costumes...Papadakis and Cizeron had tried out two other looks during their appearances at previous competitions last year, including a very "modern dance" look (left), and a copper-colored top for Guillaume (right).
BTW #2: I was a bit surprised they went (for Gabriella) with another strappy costume--especially in holding it up around the neckline (left), because of what happened at the last Winter Olympics (right) but thank goodness whatever clasp/closure they utilized this time around held up better than the last one!
Rhythm Dance to Made To Love by John Legend,  U Move, I Move by John Legend--I absolutely LOVED these costumes on Papadakis and Cizeron for their Waacking-inspired Rhythm Dance. Gabriella's burgundy-colored costume featured a see-through neckline, midriff, and sleeves with solid panels and thigh-high slit skirt, all accented with beautiful sequin accents. Guillaume wore a matching color top with skin-tight faux leather pants. Guillaume's top mirrored her design with the same see-through and solid details as well as sequins. I especially loved how the panels in the designs highlighted their bodies, accentuating the form in sharp detail. Sexy, bold, and modern, these costumes were designed and created by Feeling by Mathieu Caron .9.75
Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov ROC Rhythm Dance--Skating to You Can Leave Your Hat On (from "Nine  1/2 weeks") performed by Joe Cocker, and Brick House by The Commodores, Sinitsina and Katsalapov wore these black-and-white looks above. While I liked her UBER sexy midriff-exposing one-shoulder look, I thought his ensemble looked like a badly dressed tourist at a Carnival Cruise bar. As a costume duo, they were more Tacky Insta-Influencers and less Hot Sexy Couple.7.85

Free Dance to Piano Concerto No. 2 by Sergei Rachmaninov and Caprice No. 24 by Niccolo Paganini--These looks were far more elegant and better than the Rythm Dance in design and execution. Victoria's ivory sequined costume had gorgeous pin-tucking torso details which then opened up to a flouncy skirt. In contrast to hers, Nikita was in all-black with a loose-fitting shirt and pants. I wish he would wear more slim-fitting shirts, but at least this was an improvement from his Rythm Dance "Margaritaville"-looking outfit.8.75
Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue USA Rhythm Dance--One look at these costumes and after the first beats of their music, it all made perfect costume sense! Skating to Nasty by Janet Jackson, Rope Burn by Janet Jackson, Rhythm Nation Janet Jackson, Hubbell and Donohue wore these fabulous costumes paying homage to Miss Janet Jackson and especially her Rhythm Nation looks. I thought they were done expertly and exquisitely with the sharp fitted tailoring, the silver grommets, crystals, buckles...they were 100 % Janet and still done in a non-Halloween-but-instead fashionable manner. Iconic.9.65
Free Dance to Drowning by Anne Sila--Beautiful, ethereal, melancholic...all words that come to mind when I saw these Free Dance costumes on Madison and Zachary. Her lilac sequined dress was sexy but not vulgar with its almost-nude look that is very much on-trend for evening dresses now. I loved the asymmetry of the hem and neckline as well as the soft delicate color. Zac's look of a sequined maroon-gray-hued velvety top and maroon-colored pants was a nice masculine foil to her costume femininity.9.30
Madison Chock and Evan Bates USA Rhythm Dance--Skating to Myboi by Billie Eilish, Therefore I am by Billie Eilish, Bad Guy by Billie Eilish, Chock and Bates wore these black and neon green looks above. Evan was in all black with an outfit of pants, shirt, and faux leather-accented jacket. The only color came from the neon green lining; Madison was the star and the center of focus here in that highlighter-green colored sequined costume with pointed bustline and fab gloves done by Feeling by Mathieu Caron . In fact, one of my favorite details was those GLOVES and the emerald jeweled nails (seen in the photo above from the 2022 U.S. Figure Skating Championships). I thought they looked great!9.00
BTW: Evan's costume changed within this past season...above is what he wore to the same Rythm Dance at Skate America 2021, consisting of a skin-tight knit shirt with green binding and...a faux leather chest harness. I liked its boldness and sexiness at the time but his more "subdued" costume worn at the Olympics was more understandable, making her the sole Costume Focus.
Free Dance to Contact by Daft Punk, Touch by Daft Punk, Within by Daft Punk, Touch by Daft Punk--An Astronaut and the Sexy Reptilian Alien. Doing a Mating Dance to...Daft Punk. Sign me up! These were some of my favorite costumes in Ice Dance this season BY FAR! Evan looks hot in this astronaut-from-the-future sleek indigo blue costume with a graphic white and lavender piping, accentuating his torso. And Madison brings high fashion life to this Couture Reptile from the Runway look, featuring intricate sequin applique and a fishtail hem. Outstanding! The costumes were created by Feeling by Mathieu Caron. 9.75
Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri ITALY Rhythm Dance--Skating to Michael Jackson x Mark Ronson: Diamonds Are Invincible, Smooth Criminal by Michael Jackson, Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough by Michael Jackson, the Italian Ice Dance couple wore these costumes above. Marco's especially paid homage to the icon, Michael Jackson and his 1995 MTV Awards look, with his black and silver sequined cardigan and pants with a white t-shirt outfit. Charlene was more 90s Versace in her costume, especially with the bust and silver strapped details.8.90
Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin ROC Rhythm Dance--Skating to Everybody by Backstreet Boys (Apashe, Oski, Lennon Unofficial Remix), Monster by Shawn Mendes, Justin Bieber, Stepanova and Bukin wore these costumes above. While I think they were trying to give more of a late 90's fashion vibe here (to go with the music), these outfits still looked like modern and fresh updates. The 90's style cues of neon colors, rips and shredding, work-out top, and fingerless gloves were all there but updated with a more 21st styling and fit.9.00  Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier CANADA Rhythm Dance--Yes kids, you are looking at NEON ORANGE, TONS of multi-colored sequins, rainbow-colored feathers, AND one-piece jumpsuit bell bottoms! So don't be shocked when you realize they are skating to Elton John...more specifically I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues by Elton John and Still Standing. They are over-the-top, kitschy, fun, and bold, just like the icon himself. Many commented that if you are going to wear something as BOLD as this, their ice dance better be just as bold, and to me, it was but...yes: I could not take my eyes away from those costumes. These need to go in an Ice Dance Hall of Fame Costume Exhibition...TOMORROW! They were designed by Peter DeFreitas .9.50
BTW: For the Team Competition that happened at the start of these Olympics, Gilles and Poirier skated their Rhythm Dance wearing the same costumes...almost. Piper wore something different which featured a bubblegum pink bra top, cropped jacket, and "feather" skirt. I am glad they opted for the complete jumpsuit for their Individual Ice Dance Competition.
Free Dance to Long and Winding Road by Paul McCartney, arranged by Govardo--For their Free Dance, Gilles and Poirier wore these light lavender-and-violet-hued costumes with sequins and tie-dye shading. While I really liked hers, I wasn't so much a fan of his--in terms of the coloring/shading and sequin details. For him, it was almost distracting, especially with that one-leg dye-and-sequin section which I felt was unnecessary. Her draped asymmetrical costume with exposed shoulder flounce-sleeve was beautiful and stage-impacting, making her almost look like a rare bird found in the Amazon.8.30
BTW: The above were the costumes they wore for their Free Dance in the Team Competition at the Beijing Olympics over a week ago. Look closely and you will notice that in terms of design, they're basically the same (as the light lavender ones) but just different in color and dyeing effects. I almost like these worn for the Team Competition better than the other ones. They were designed and created by Peter DeFreitas.

Olivia Smart and Adrian Diaz SPAIN Rythm Dance--Skating to Proud Mary by Tina Turner, Olivia Smart and Adrian Diaz looked Muy Caliente in these costumes. Adrian wore a black outfit consisting of black pants, a belt, and a sequined black shirt with plunging neckline and satin cuffs. It was OK, except for that belt. I know that they have to cinch their pants otherwise, they would not stay up perhaps, but, I would rather see a non-belt clean undisrupted look. Olivia was PERFECT as an Ice Dance Tina Turner in a shocking red sequined mini dress with a cowl neckline. 8.95
Free Dance to I Was Always There by Henry Jackman, The Fencing Lesson (The Mask of Zorro soundtrack) by James Horner, I Want To Spend My Lifetime Loving You (The Mask of Zorro soundtrack) performed by Tina Arena, Marc Anthony, The Plaza Of Execution (The Mask of Zorro soundtrack) by James Horner--The Spanish Ice Dance pair wore these great looks above for their Free Dance. Olivia wore an emerald green corset-style dress with a draped wrap skirt and Adrian was Zorro Hot in a black ensemble. The costumes were perfect compliments to their skate, music, and overall theme. Muy Bien Chicos! The costumes were designed and created by Feeling by Mathieu Caron .9.20
Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson GREAT BRITAIN Rythm Dance--They skated their Rhythm Dance to I Was Made For Lovin’ You (from "Hard Times") by Kiss, Forever (from "Hot in the Shade") by Kiss, Rock, and Roll All Nite (from "Dressed to Kill") by Kiss in these black and silver studded looks. I liked everything about them: His sequined shoulder flange details, his UBER plunging neckline (very "Kiss"!), as well as her design with the sequined "V" applique, the side panels, and fingerless gloves. They look 21st century Rock & Roll hot!9.25
Free Dance to Circle of Life, Nants' Ingonyama (The Lion King soundtrack) by Hans Zimmer, They Live In You (The Lion King soundtrack) by Hans Zimmer, He Lives in You (The Lion King soundtrack) by Hans Zimmer, Circle of Life (The Lion King soundtrack) by Hans Zimmer, King of Pride Rock, Circle of Life (Reprise) (The Lion King soundtrack) by Hans Zimmer--I have to give costume props to the designers at Elite Xpression for taking the "Lion King" theme and somehow making it more Alexander McQueen and less Pantages Theater! I really liked these for their high-end fashion style and sequin-and-feather-like applique. Her costume beadwork was great and the delicate, almost Couture-like ruching on his top was subtly gorgeous.9.25
Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker USA Rythm Dance--To their Disco-inspired Rhythm Dance to Love to Love You Baby - Giorgio Moroder Remix by Donna Summer, Bad Girl - Gigamesh Remix by Donna Summer, Hawayek and Baker wore these looks above. I can see the overt Disco-influence in his unbuttoned satin shirt and black outfit, as well as her razzle-dazzle dress, overall these were OK but to be honest, not fabulous: I would have maybe liked his satin shirt to match her lipstick and earrings (pink) and for Kaitlin, I wouldn't have taken the crystal mesh all the way down that deep in the front; maybe just the neckline, arms and in the back, while her waist would be "cinched" with a solid pink contrast band matching his shirt and her earrings/lipstick. Just my two cents.7.95
Free Dance to Prelude in E-Minor, Op. 28, No 4 by Frederic Chopin, arranged by Janusz Olejniczak, Nocturne in E-Minor, Op. 72, No. 1 by Frederic Chopin, arranged by Janusz Olejniczak--Ethereal, pretty, delicate and just right for the skate and music. I liked these costumes from the U.S. Ice Dance pair for their Free Dance. His romantic blouson style satin top was modern-dance ballet adjacent and nice when paired with tight pants, and Kaitlin's lilac dress was effortless; I loved the gathered bust and waistband and see-through flared skirt. Costumes are from Feeling by Mathieu Caron.9.00
Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha CANADA Free Dance to Real in Rio (from Rio soundtrack) by John Powell, Locked Up (from Rio soundtrack) by John Powell, Bird Fight (from Rio soundtrack) by John Powell--These Ice Dance costumes to "Rio" were on my TOP FIVE LIST for this past season: I LOVED THEM! The colors, the design, the outstanding sequin work...they were like two rare, exotic birds ready for a Bird Couture Runway Show! Ladies and gentlemen, this is how you make a COSTUME IMPACT. Bravo!9.75
And Last but (maybe) not least... What would you wear if you had to skate to "Spirit in the Sky", The White Stripes, and Britney's "Toxic"? Katharina Muller and Tim Dieck of Germany decided to go The Joker meets Harley Quinn...of course! They were a fantastic Costume Mess, and I was LIVING for it. Unfortunately, the judges were not amused by their skate and possibly the choice of costumes, as fun as they might have been! They received the lowest scores out of ten couples in the Team Event Competition in Rhythm Dance.
