SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss World 2016: Evening Gown Recap, Crowning Moment Video

Who Me?-- Miss World Puerto Rico Stephanie Del Valle reacting to her name being called as "Miss World 2016" with Miss World Philippines Catriona Gray (L) and Miss World Kenya Evelyn Thungu (R)--Miss World 2016 Finals

The 66th edition of the Miss World  Pageant happened this past Sunday in Oxon Hill, Maryland (near Washington D.C.) at the just-opened MGM National Harbor Resort. And the winner was... Miss World Puerto Rico Stephanie Del Valle ! She's 5' 10" (1.78 M) tall, only 19 years old and hails from San Juan. The new Miss World was attending Pace University in New York City for a BA in communication studies with a minor in pre-law.

Queen in Her Throne: Miss World 2016 Puerto Rico's Stephanie Del Valle--Miss World 2016 Finals

Yeah, It's You!--Miss World Puerto Rico Stephanie Del Valle reacting to her name being called as "Miss World 2016", while Miss World Philippines Catriona Gray (L) and Miss World Kenya Evelyn Thungu (R) feign disappointment--Miss World 2016 Finals

She represented "Miss Toa Baja Mundo 2016" during the "Miss Mundo Puerto Rico 2016" (Miss World Puerto Rico) beauty pageant. Puerto Rico had to wait 41 years to get another "Miss World" and Stephanie therefore was the second one from the US territory.

Bring Back the National Costumes Miss World!--Scene from the Opening of Miss World 2016 Finals

The final show was televised around the world and Livestreamed as well (it will be supposedly shown in the US on the E! Network on Christmas Day, December 25th). there was so fabulous National Costume parade and being that it is "Miss World", no swimsuit portion or separate evening gown Competition, for that matter.

Ra Ra Ra: Miss World 2016 contestants do their best to not look as if they are in a Cheerleading                                                   Competition--Miss World 2016 Finals

Instead the show began with the 116 contestants from around the world in matching red, white and blue outfits consisting of a leotard and sequined mini flared skirt (Are we in a Cheerleading Competition??) and then an introduction of the contestants via taped segments where they wearing gowns of their own choosing. The show itself lacked the genuine biting-your-nails excitement one gets from a "Miss Universe" and it certainly lacked the Glitz and Glamour of yesteryear of past "Miss World" contests of the 80's/90's/early aughts. I would venture to say that the recent "Miss Supranational 2016" Finals in Poland were produced much more in tune to what these type of shows are supposed to be. But enough of that...it's time to REVIEW and RECAP the GOWNS!!!

Gown Gals: Contestants of "Miss World 2016" in their Evening Gowns--Miss World 2016 Finals

As I said, there was no official "Evening Gown Competition" during the Final Crowning Night of "Miss World 2016" and so therefore, we were only treated to what the contestants wore during the Finalists naming as well as finale/crowning moments. I blogged HERE and HERE about some of the gowns for pre-Miss World 2016 events but here is my RECAP of the Top Finalist's Evening Gowns, beginning with the Winner, Miss World Puerto Rico:

Puerto Rico Stephanie Del Valle: Stephanie wore a dusty rose ballgown design made of silk organza and 24,000 Swarovski crystals. The tiered design was created by Puerto Rican fashion designer Carlos Alberto who named Stephanie as his Muse (I would too!). It was STUNNING, beautiful, and very "Miss World" perfect, balancing the Beauty Queen, Demure and No-Sexy aspect of the atypical "Miss World". It was one of the BEST gowns of the pageant for sure so Kudos to Carlos Alberto.

Score: 9.90

Gown and sketch from Puerto Rican fashion designer Carlos Alberto

La Beauty Queen Sexy: Carlos Alberto is famous for also creating this Va-Va-Voom silver-and-nude creation for Zuleyka Rivera who was crowned "Miss Universe 2006" wearing  his gown

Last Year's Miss World: Spain's Mireia Lalaguna

Spanish Disney Princess: I have to say that this was a very interesting choice of a gown for Mireia. It's very "Miss World" in its "Princess"-like ballgown shape and "Prom & Pageant" sequin detail but...I think it was just TOO much iridescence and the lower gathered ruffled section made it look like a Disney Costume. It was two minuted away from being tacky-licious for sure. And then, she had to wear those matching peep-toe pumps: Ayyy Dios Mio! But I did like the strapless bustier section., if that counts for anything.

Some of the Finalist's Gowns--Miss World 2016:

Satin and Sequins: Miss World 2016 Finalists--Miss World 2016 Finals

Dominican Republic Yaritza Reyes: First Runner-up Yaritza Reyes (and one of the favorites to win) wore this off-the-shoulder canary yellow satin gown. It was nice and very "Prom-and-Pageant". I wished she would have gone a bit more Red Carpet/Runway Gown but I guess she was bit by the "You Gotta Look Pageant pretty" Miss World gown bug. Well, at least, it fit nicely and the length was correct (no pumps showing!). I just wasn't a fan of that side-swept hair style; it as a bit 1997.

Score: 8.95

Indonesia Natasha Mannuela: Natasha was the Second Runner-up and she wore this blue-and-nude strapless ballgown on the final night. The gown featured heavily sequined bodice which then "sprayed" onto the midriff and skirt section of the organza gown. This was gorgeous and very "Delicate Couture". She looked like the wife of a very rich Indonesian oil magnate who ordered Haute Couture from Paris and decided to wear it to a party. Nothing wrong with this. Once again, I wanted more "Wow" and just a teeny bit of sexiness.

Score: 9.00

Kenya Evelyn Tungu: Speaking of Sexiness, I got it with the SUPER gorgeous Evelyn Thungu "Miss World Kenya". First off, can we talk about how she's like SEVEN FEET TALL??!! And wow, what a missed opportunity not competing in "Miss Universe" because she would SLAY it! This lady is a SUPERMODEL. Someone needs to call a top model agency in Milan/NY/Paris ASAP and book her! OK,--enough of that, let's talk about her gown: Evelyn wore this red lace, tulle and organza deign and well, she looked SPECTACULAR! The gown also featured gold draped chain jeweled details. I just love this from head to toe. There's A LOT happening but I like it. Diva and Bravo!

Score: 9.95

Philippines Catriona Gray: Miss World Philippines made the Top Five wearing this very beautiful dusty rose pink-colored gown. I love everything about it: The gorgeous sequin work, the style, the back "Watteau"-like cape detail. This was a "Get Your Crown" gown! Unfortunately, she didn't...but almost. It was still, one of my Top Favorite Gowns of the "Miss World 2016" Finals.

Score: 9.95

Brazil Beatrice Fontoura: Beatrice wore this silver sequined gown for the "Miss World 2016" Finals. I thought this gown was a great choice. It fit her well, the length was PERFECT, and she (hair) styled just right; loved the back bun/chignon. She looked chic and effortlessly elegant.

Score: 9.30

United States Audra Mari: Audra wore this rose pink colored crepe and chiffon gown featuring a fitted "mermaid Lite" shape, back chiffon falls and nude illusion side and center front panels. It was pretty and "Miss World" perfect. Can we just officially call "Dusty Rose" the New "White" in terms of Of-the-Moment Pageant Gown colors?!

Score: 9.00

Mongolia Bayartsetseg Altangerel: Bayartsetseg wore this royal blue mermaid-silhouette gown with intricate sequin applique detail. It was very "Pageant Betty" and I just wished she would have worn the gown she featured here:

Miss World Mongolia 2016 at the "Miss World Designer Dress Dinner"--But she didn't so for what she did wear for the "Miss World 2016" Finals...

Score: 8. 50

Belgium Lenty Frans: Lord knows how Miss World Belgium ended up as a Finalist (there are always surprises at "Miss World") and I'm still at a loss at this chartreuse lace and satin gown. It's very "Prom and Pageant' and well, something one can buy off-the-rack in a store in Downtown LA. But kudos to her for getting so far. And I will give her points for the gown being the correct length.

Score: 8.00

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CONGRATULATIONS and Felicitaciones to Miss World Puerto Rico Stephanie Dell Valle for winning the second "Miss World title for Puerto Rico

PROJECT RUNWAY.....My TOP 5 OMG MOMENTS: Ep. 13

Nick Verreos--Project Runway "Top 5 OMG Moments": Episode 13" YouTube

It's almost the end of Season 15 "Project Runway" on Lifetime Network , and we are now in Episode 13: Time for the Tim Gunn Home Visits as well an "Amuse-bouche" of what the Top Four Finalists' New York Fashion Week collections will look like...So, here's my "Top 5 OMG Moments" for this week's episode as well as my RECAP on the MyLifetime.com "Project Runway" Blog. Keep reading!

Click below to watch my "Top 5 OMG Moments" of Season 15 "Project Runway" Episode 13:

Thoughtful Laurence: Laurence Basse and Tim Gunn--Season 15 "Project Runway" Episode 13

#1 OMG! Time For The Home Visits! First stop on Tim Gunn's Home Visit
is Laurence in her fab Downtown LA loft. Here, we are privy to Laurence sharing
her emotional journey involving having a child at 16 and estrangement from her
dad, all which somehow inspired her collection. It's great to see this personal
side of Laurence and helps us understand her as a designer (and honestly, why
she's been so guarded and serious through the whole season). But...Will this
emotional inspiration translate on the runway? We'll see...

Bowlin' Tim: Tim Gunn Goes Bowling at Pinz Bowling Center, Studio City

#2 OMG! Tim Goes Bowling...And Rik
Goes Psychedelic!
In
a classic "Project Runway" Tim Gunn Home Visit Moment, we are treated
to Tim not only IN BOWLING SHOES, but oh-so-delicately skipping his lithe body
to throw a strike...

We then get a sneak peek of Rik's collection which is not
only a Psychedelic Optical Illusion but also an Un-Cohesive Mish-Mash (above). You
should always be worried when you hear Tim say "Something needs to
happen...And I wouldn't pretend to tell you what it is."
OUCH!

#3 OMG! Erin
The Mad Fashion Scientist!
We join Erin back in her Alma Mater,
the MassArt, where she seems to be thriving in her element! She's using their
design labs and workrooms to create her collection, making laser-cut Plexiglass
sequins, hand-weaving fabrics, doing custom prints and even using FISHING FLIES
for embellishments! I just have one thing to say: MORE, MORE, MORE!! Pretty
Please??!!

Too Mucheey: Tim Gunn and Roberi Parra--Season 15 "project Runway" Episode 13

#4 OMG! From Caracas
To Miami to New York City!
Like Laurence, we are treated to a
bit more of Roberi's back-story, learning that he arrived in the US from
Venezuela ONLY 4 1/2 MONTHS AGO (!), amidst all of the turmoil happening back
in his home country. Speaking of TURMOIL, I'm with Tim in regards to being a
bit confused by his collection. Roberi explains it as "Different Pieces
from Different Moments, from Different Places". Yeah, I guess that's one
way of putting it! And after taking a look at his garments, Tim responds with the
MOST PERFECT REBUTTAL: "I'm not saying that it's TOO MUCH but...It's A
LOT!"
. Amen Sister!

#5 OMG! COHESION! COHESION! COHESION! While it seems that every season,
once the judges have given their critiques for the Final Four
"Amuse-bouche" Preview Looks, each designer is always left with
changes to be made and A LOT of work. This season, it seems that ALL the
designers have one common problem: COHESION COHESION COHESION! Or lack of...

Psychedelic Rik: Of
the four designers, Rik probably has the most work to do, somehow trying to
unite his Psychedelic Fashion Acid Trip Band of Ladies (above) and make them look as if
they were from one collection.

Slouchy Meets Fitted: Laurence needs to somehow link the lightness to
dark of her collection into one modern aesthetic...

Funky Resort Erin: Erin and Roberi seem to have
the least work to do with Erin only needing to add more funky "Erin" details in every look above...

Iridescent and Paper Bag Waist Roberi: While Roberi needs to
elevate his garments and make each piece SPECIAL and UNIQUE. Good Luck
Designers! See you on the Runway!

Now, it's time for my RECAP on the MyLifetime.com "Project Runway" Blog for Episode 13:

Season 15, Episode 13 Recap: Repeat After Me: Cohesion,
Cohesion, Cohesion!

Final four! “Project Runway” is at the doorstep of New York
Fashion Week, having finally chosen its four finalists: Roberi, Laurence, Erin,
and Rik. After an almost entire season of me screaming from the top of my
typing finger tips to step it up, we have come to the moment to see if they
do…well, almost.

Heidi and Tim walk onto the runway, congratulating the
designers for making it to Fashion Week, announcing that each will get six
weeks and $9,000 to create ten looks. As a goodbye, Heidi tells them that the
judges have seen what they do best and, “Now it’s time to STEP IT UP!” Sound
familiar?

Two weeks before Fashion Week and Tim is off on his home
visits. First stop: Los Angeles.
Laurence is in Downtown LA, showing Tim her collection which is inspired by the
story of her life and her early struggles with having a child at 16 and
estrangement from her father. She tells Tim that “she always falls but never
hits the floor” and this is part of her story. In a shocker of all shockers,
there is NOT ONE SINGLE BLACK PIECE in the...

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss World 2016: Best of Miss World Fashion Show Gowns

Fashion Show Divas: Miss World 2016 contestants during the "Miss World 2016" Fashion Show

All photos courtesy of Miss World Facebook

In my last post HERE, I discussed my Top Favorites from the recent "Designer Dress Dinner" event for the Miss World 2016 Beauty Pageant. The Finals are Sunday night and in the lead-up to the all-important Crowning Night, there was a "Fashion Show" event last night where the contestants wore some fabulous gowns. From looking at the photos in the Miss World Facebook site, there were two types of gowns worn: African-inspired and for a lack of a better description, "regular" evening gowns. Here are some of my FAVORITES:

Dominican Republic Yaritza Miguelina Reyes Ramirez: The super tall and super gorgeous Yaritza wore one of my favorite gowns in the "Designer Dress Dinner" event from a couple of nights ago and here, she wins again with one of the most perfect gowns during the "Miss World 2016" Fashion Show event. While the design is quite simple, this strapless gown is elegant, red carpet-ready and fits her beautifully. I love her up-do bun, and button-earrings (and I'm usually not a fan of those!). This is really quite perfect in so many "pageant Gown" points.

Venezuela Diana Croce: Diana is on a roll when it comes to gowns. I liked the bubblegum pink ballgown she wore at the "Designer Dress Dinner" and here, for this "Fashion Show", she wore this off-the-shoulder nude/blush sequined organza style. The gown design is very elegant, Haute Couture-esque and 1950's Grace Kelly-Meets-Evita Peron Dior-like. She looks quite beautiful in this, like South American aristocracy.

Kenya Evelyn Njami Thungu: Three words: Go On Girl! I love this gown on Miss World Kenya She was one of the contestants who wore an "African-themed" design and it was perfectly suited for her. I loved the color blocking and especially the gold halter neckline and pearl-like draped torso details. This gown was literally...made for her! From head to toe: Perfection.

Argentina Camila Macias: From this photo, I was instantly drawn to this gown; the bright canary yellow color, the "Obi"-like back detail and dramatic "Watteau"-like back...she looked like a runway Diva!

Honduras Kerelyne Campigoti Webster: Miss World Honduras also wore one of these "African-inspired" designs and it looked amazing on her. I loved the strawberry-like red color, the gold dripping embellishments...that Cleopatra-like neckline...she looked like an Empress! Or at the very least, a member of African royalty...even if she is from Honduras!

Slovenia Maja Taradi: One of the contestants to wear a more "traditional" evening gown was Miss World Slovenia and she looked divine. This organza and tulle gown had a blush/nude lining and very beautiful black lace sequined embellishment. This dress was very Valentino Haute Couture even though I'm sure it wasn't (those gowns cost $100,000 and well, there's no way they would lend a "Miss Slovenia" one of them). Nevertheless, she looked like a modern red carpet version of Shakespeare's "Juliet".

Indonesia Natasha Mannuela: Natasha wore this ivory silk satin and tulle gown for the "Miss World 2016" Fashion Show event. The design looked quite expensive and very intricate (especially the silver sequin applique). The top section was magnificent. I just wish that it was TO THE FLOOR (it was too short) and that tulle overskirt wasn't really necessary.

Uruguay Maria Romina Trotto Morales: Miss World Uruguay wore this very fabulous "Africa"-inspired gown and let's just say, she NAILED IT! She looked perfect! I loved her poses, attitude, and the gown fit her perfectly (correct length) and the bronzed colors were impacting...I could go on and on. Oh and did I tell you how much I loved the headdress accessory??!! Well, now I did!

Guadeloupe Magalie Adelson: This is the second time I am writing about Miss World Guadeloupe and how she's done VERY GOOD with her gown choices. Here, for the "Miss World 2016" Fashion Show, she wore this strapless silk damask mermaid-shaped gown.

Trinidad and Tobago Daniella Walcott: Daniella wore this red and nude colored gown and I thought she looked quite Gown Fabulous! The dress featured a satin criss-cross strap detail and sequins throughout. I thought it was an impacting design and was a fan of the fact that it was the correct length!

Croatia Angelica Zacchigna: Miss World Croatia wore this golden colored gown which featured gathered chiffon draping at the torso and a very sequined gown body. The design was very "Pageant Right" and fit her very well. It wasn't re-inventing the Gown Couture wheel but I was a fan. I just wished her hair wasn't so "I'm 16 years-old going to a Prom!".

Turkey Buse Iskenderoglu: Miss World Turkey seems to be quite the Model Fab contestant and here--for the "Miss World 2016" Fashion Show--she wore this red and nude gown. The design featured red sequin applique over a nude tulle base and nude lining. The basic halter style wasn't anything new but the overall effect was red carpet and fashion show impacting.

Uganda Leah Kagasa: I loved seeing this "different" kind of gown. Miss World Uganda wore this golden sequined design featuring billowy blouson sleeves, a keyhole neckline and satin waist tie. The gown was elegant yet eye-catching and reminded me of a very flashy Moroccan caftan.

People's Republic of China Jing Kong: Miss World China P.R. looked like a column of black and white in this printed design. The gown featured a high side slit, one shoulder neckline and black semi-sheer back. It was quite impacting.

Belarus Polina Borodacheva: Poilna wore this black and gold gown and I thought it was quite nice. The design looked regal and expensive and fit her well. The gown featured a strapless design, a billowy overskirt and gold applique. While I am usually a fan of the modern center-parted hairstyle, I'm thinking here it might have been too "sporty" for this grand gown.

Mongolia Bayartsetseg Altangerel: Miss World Mongolia wore this gold jacquard strapless gown and made quite an impression--even in this photo. This contestant is one to watch (a future "Miss World" for Mongolia??!!). If there was something that I wasn't a fan of was the unnecessary black tulle; CUT THEM OFF!!!

Finally...

Peru Pierina Sue Wong Mori: How could I not comment on this fabulous--and very happy--contestant, Miss World Peru. She wore this look for the "Miss World 2016" Fashion Show and I give her major points: The gown was nice, fit her well, her attitude was EVERYTHING, liked the circular waist detail and arm cuff  but yeah, IT'S ALL ABUT THAT TURBAN!

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss World 2016 Evening Gowns: Designer Dress Dinner

Gown Gals: Miss World 2016 contestants at the "Designer Dress Dinner", MGM National Harbor Resort Maryland

The 66th Annual Miss World  Beauty Pageant Finals is almost here!116 contestants from all over the world are competing for the coveted crown, with the finals taking place at the just-opened MGM National Harbor Resort in Maryland, just south of Washington D.C. This is the second time in the history of the pageant that it has been held in the US (last time, it was in Atlanta Georgia back in 1991.

All the contestants have been in the DC area for the last couple of weeks taking part in some of the "Challenge Events", including Sports, Talent, Top Model, etc. Some of the contestants even got to take a trip to NYC to check out a Broadway show. Unfortunately, there has not been a "National Costume Presentation" since the contestants were told to leave those back at home so sadly, there was no fabulous Flora & Fauna or Conquistador Couture for me to cover but...a couple of nights ago the Designer Dress Dinner happened in which the beauties wore their finest in "Designer Dresses"/Evening Gowns. As you know here on my Sashes And Tiaras Blog, besides National Costumes, I also love to discuss Pageant Gowns so...

Satin and Sequins: Miss World 2016 contestants at the "Designer Dress Dinner", MGM National Harbor Resort Maryland

From looking at the photos, here are some of my favorite Evening Gowns from the "Miss World Designer Dress Dinner":

Mongolia Bayartsetseg Altangerel:  This is an absolutely stunning gown worn by Miss World Mongolia! It's very regal, stylish and fabulous, all at the same time. I can just imagine all the other contestants thinking "Oh No She Didn't! Can we just go back to our rooms and call it a night!" when she came down from her room in this beautiful red jacquard silk satin one shoulder ballgown. This is a "Drop The Mic" Gown for sure!

Serbia Katarina Sulkic: From this photo, this ivory tulle and chiffon gown looks intricate, beautifully made and dramatic. I love the Grecian Goddess-like draping and details and looks very Marchesa-esque. I also think she was wise to wear her hair in this stylish back chignon/bun.

Dominican Republic Yaritza Miguelina Reyes Ramirez: One of the top favorites for the Miss World 2016 crown, Miss World Dominican Republic looked every inch a QUEEN in this sequined stunner of a gown. The golden/blush/nude gown featured many chandelier crystal embellishments, paillettes and sequins, illusion mesh panels as well as covered shoulder/epaulet details. It fit her perfectly and was the correct to-the-floor length. Muy Bien!

Venezuela Diana Croce: Another Muy Bien! is this gown worn by Miss World Venezuela Diana Croce. The bubblegum pink colored strapless ballgown featured intricately molded and pleated panels at the bustier/torso section and an oversized peplum over the flared gown/skirt. Leave it to a Venezuelan beauty queen to "Bring It!" when it comes to gowns, and this one especially is very "old school Miss Venezuela Retro" in it's Haute Couture over-the-top elegant silhouette. Many pageant fans have commented--as I also noticed--how similar the style and color was to...

The Angel Sanchez-design gown that "Miss World Venezuela" Jacqueline Aguilera wore when she won the "Miss World 1995" title

Vietnam Diue Ngoc Truong Thi: Miss World Vietnam wore this silver mermaid shaped gown at the "Miss World Designer Dress Dinner". I think this was one of the most beautiful gowns of the night! Again, the style, and intricate applique details reminded me of those UBER gorgeous Marchesa gowns. This gown here featured silver sequined applique feathers and flower petal like details. It is simply EXQUISITE and fits her to a T!

Panama Alessandra Bueno: Miss World Panama wore this gown featuring a Chrysalides-like Butterfly painted cape. Even though this could be two minutes from looking like a Cirque du Soleil costume, I still think it's quite fabulous and love the impact it has. I also love that she slicked her hair back like that; very Red Carpet Modern and chic!

Germany Selina Kriechbaum (Top photo, right, and lower photo): One word: Wow. I usually don't expect a "Miss Germany" to give me such Red Carpet Gown Fabulousness (sorry Germany!), but Selina delivered. This is a stunner of a gown featuring sequin applique in the very well-fitting gown and a sheer chiffon cape that puts a delicate exclamation point of drama. She looks like a Gown Angel in this! And if that wasn't enough, Miss World Germany also wore this:

Violet Beauty: This is another beautiful gown worn by "Miss World Germany" Selina Kriechbaum, this time a boat-neck fitted gown with sweeping train. It fit well and was quite impacting. I also have to compliment her hairstyle as well; it was modern, red carpet fab and not "Pageant Betty" pouffy.

Mexico Ana Girault (Right): In this photo, I am highlighting "Miss World Mexico" and her scarlet red gown (because Miss World Bulgaria's Galina Asenova Mihaylova, on the left, is a bit of a Garden Gown Mess!). I am intrigued by the ballgown shape, the criss-cross front top section as well as fabrication. This red gown looks expensive, elegant and impacting. I also love her hair as well  as earrings. Ana is Gown Chic!

Guadeloupe Magalie Adelson: Magalie did well in choosing this red sequined column gown. The dress fits her PERFECTLY (Check out that correct length!), the color is AMAZING for her and I also especially love that top. I am so happy when I see a contestant who is not from say, Venezuela, Philippines, Colombia, Thailand, Indonesia (the Pageant "heavies"!) wearing a chic, elegant red carpet fab gown! Tres Bien Miss World Guadeloupe!

Ireland Niamh Kennedy: Of course, Miss World Ireland would wear an emerald green colored gown. And yet, I still LOVED it! The crepe back satin gown featured long sleeves, delicate sequins at the torso, peplum waist, paneled gown/skirt and slight train with horsehair trim at the hem.  I also loved her modern chic ponytail hairstyle and not-too-over-the-top makeup. I haven't seen a Miss World Ireland look this chic in a gown in a long time! Well done Niamh.

Philippines Catriona Gray: Catriona is a beautiful contestant and a favorite for the Miss World 2016 title. She is obviously well-trained in the language of "Gowns" and did well in choosing this lilac sequined dress for the "Miss World 2016 Designer Dress Dinner". The strapless gown featured a lovely "Watteau"-like back that added a bit of drama to the otherwise very feminine and delicate design. I also have to say how much I LOVE her center parted very chic, slick hairstyle; it's runway perfect!

Romania Diana Dinu: Diana wore this black and off-white gown featuring a sequined and feather-like top section and simple crepe gown/skirt with center front slit. The gown fit nicely and looked quite "Designer Dress" Fab. I just wished that it didn't have that center front nude illusion panel at the torso but from the looks of her "sistahs", maybe I should be happy it's there.--otherwise, there might have been A LOT of tacky breast spillage.

Ghana Anthoinette Delali Kemavor: I love when contestants bring a little bit (and sometimes a lot!) of their home country into their evening gown choices. Miss World Ghana wore this fab mermaid shaped dress in bold Ghana Kente cloth patterns/prints. The gown fits perfectly, it's the correct length and best of all, looks fabulous!

Democratic Republic of Congo Andrea Moloto: Another African beauty who did "traditional" wonderfully was this beauty from the Democratic Republic of Congo. I loved the mixing of the prints in the inner part of her dramatic cape and her turban, mixed in with the simplicity of a white gown. There was no need for any extras like that unnecessary lace trim in the neckline, but when you are wearing this turban, I'll give her a Gown Pass.

Nepal Asmi Shrestha: I loved this gown/caftan worn by Miss World Nepal. The print and colors are joyous and attention-grabbing (in a good way!). I also liked her very red carpet-ready hair and styling. She looks like she should be the UN Ambassador to Nepal ready for a MAJOR black tie party!

Last but not least...

Lesotho Rethabile Anacletta Tsonane: I wanted to give a special "What Is She Wearing?" shout-out to Miss World Lesotho for this "Designer Dress" of hers. If you look closely, it's not really a dress but she is wearing PANTS! And not only is there gold sequin lace applique and nude illusion at the top, but...it looks as if there are cascades of tulle hanging down (or attached) from the sides of the pants. In any other instance, I might be asking if she had waaaay too much to drink at the bar...but here, I just want to be her BEST FRIEND!

BEST WESTERN.....My Favorite Best Western Hotels: London, Paris, Milan, NYC

British Tabloid Reading Morning: Nick Verreos at the Best Western Mornington Hotel Hyde Park London

In my latest You Must Be Trippin Best Western Blog, I wanted to highlight some of my FAVORITE Best Western hotels I have stayed at in London, Paris, Milan and New York City! Comfy, stylish, home-away-from home...Here's my fun Travel Style Blog:

Like many industries, travel has become a part of life when running a fashion business, and I find myself often living out of a suitcase. Although I live and work in Los Angeles, I sell my NV Nick Verreos clothing line internationally to The Shopping Channel Canada , QVC Italy and QVC UK . I also travel frequently to NYC because my NV showroom is located there. Wherever I go, whether it’s Canada, Milan, London or Manhattan, I love staying at Best Western properties for many reasons. First of all, they provide a home-away-from-home feeling that allows me a place to decompress and relax from a full day of traveling.

Parisian Breakfast: Croissants, Ham, Cheeses, Hard-boiled Egg...and Le Figaro Newspaper--Best Western Premier Marais Grands Boulevards Hotel Paris France

And, whether I’m traveling for business or pleasure, I’m a sucker for a hearty breakfast to begin my day, and Best Western offers this as a perk in many of their locations. But most of all, any time I see the Best Western logo, there is never a question of the top-notch service and consistent hospitality. Oh and yes, I do love how they match my stylish sensibility, especially when I am abroad.

Ciao Milano: Nick Verreos at the Best Western Atlantic Hotel Milan Italy

I want to first start with one of my favorite Best Western hotels that I stay at when in Milan and that is the Best Western Atlantic Hotel. The entrance and lobby reflect the 1950s/60s décor, which Milan is known for in terms of design...

ICE STYLE.....2016 ISU Grand Prix Finals: Pairs, Ice Dance, Ladies, Men

Costume Divo: Japan's Yuzuru Hanyu during his Free Skate, 2016 Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final Marseille

Flip Her: Canada Pairs Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford during their Short Program--2016 Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final

This past weekend were the very important 2016 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Finals in Marseille France. In my "Ice Style" blog here, I have written extensively about the 2016 costumes of the Grand Prix series, including Skate America , Skate Canada International , NHK Trophy , etc. Therefore, I have pretty much covered a lot of the Skating Couture for this season.  So for this recap, I just wanted to briefly touch upon some of the costumes in all of the disciplines.

PAIRS-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov Russia Short Program to Glam (Electro Swing Remix) by Dimie Cat: I liked these costumes especially her shimmying silver and gold fringed design. I also appreciated his semi-matching vest.

Tarasova and Morozov Russia Free Skate to Music by John Miles: The music was a bit 80's and so were their costumes so...I guess that's good? They went with a blue and black theme with asymmetrical style lines and minimal silver crystal detail. Not sure how necessary those off-white "sleeves" were. PS: She looks soooo much like Claire Danes!! #JustSaying

Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford Canada Short Program to Killer by Seal: I'm always intrigued when I see a full-on jumpsuit/bodysuit worn in competition. I actually liked this on Meagan and I think it was just right for the music and skate. I also loved how Eric was coordinating with her--costume-wise.

Duhamel and Radford Canada Free Skate to No, je ne regrette rien performed by Patricia Kaas: I've said this before so I hope it's not news: I thought her costume is two minutes away from looking a bit "Toddlers & Tiaras". I think it's the powder pink and crystal applique work but mainly, I just have a strong abhorrence to a sequined applique neckline detail; it's just so Miss America 1996.

Yu Xiaoyu and Zhang Hao China Short Program to Eternal Flame by Brand X Music

Fearless by Brand X Music: I loved this blue costumes worn by the Chinese pair. I think she is just ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS and this blue ombre sequined design is very high-end. He also looks great in his chiffon blouson sequined top and deep blue pants ensemble. This is Costume Pair Couture!

ICE DANCE---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ekaterina Bobrova and Dimitri Soloviev Russia Free Dance to Prelude No. 20 by Frederic Chopin, The Four Seasons arranged by Nigel Kennedy: These Ice Dancers from Russia looked modern and chic in this black and white design for their Free Dance. LOVED her one shoulder black costume; so minimalist, directional and right for the music.

Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron France Free Skate to Stillness by Nest, Oddudua by Aldo Lopez Gavilan, Happiness Does Not Wait by Olafur Arnalds: I have discussed these costumes and how much I am a fan. I think she is absolutely ethereal and Runway Chic Goddess and Guillaume...well, thank goodness that shirt is PLUNGING and SLEEVELESS. Tres Bien!

Maia and Alex Shibutani USA Short Dance to Blues: That's Life performed by Frank Sinatra, Hip Hop: That's Life (remix) performed by Frank Sinatra, Jay Z--Excited to see Maia in a jumpsuit and I think she looked GREAT! I loved these costumes on the Shibutanis; they were chic, modern and a fresh costume perspective while skating to Frank Sinatra and Jay Z.

Shibutani and Shibutani USA Free Dance to Evolution: Mirror In Mirror by Anne Akiko Meyers, Akira Eguchi--These were pretty costumes that worked well with the music. I especially loved Alex's draped chiffon top; it was a perfect complimentary look to Maia's floaty dress.

Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir Canada Short Program to Hip Hop: Kiss by Prince, Blues: Five Women by Prince, Blues: Purple Rain by Prince--Prince. Need I say more? Here's another jumpsuit and this time, it's purple and black, sequined applique and giving homage to the iconic Prince ruffled blouse. Her jumpsuit is costume perfection. The thought and detail put into the entire design and especially those side panel cut-outs is commendable. LOVE.

Virtue and Moir Canada Free Dance to Pilgrims on a Long Journey by Coeur de Pirate

Latch (Acoustic) by Sam Smith: This dress on Tessa is one of MY TOP FAVORITE COSTUMES for the 2016 Grand Prix. Figure Skating Season. She looks Runway Chic, divine and fabulously ethereal at the same time. I usually have a problem with the male partner just being oh-so-boring in black (or in this case, navy) but...WHO CARES??? Tessa looks GORGEOUS It's all about HER! (Sorry Scott!). Anyhow...I also want to talk about how this is a COLOR WAY COSTUME CHANGE from what we last saw her wearing in this Free Skate...

Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir at Skate Canada International 2016. Here, she wore a putty colored version of the same dress/costume. The one she wore in Marseille at the 2016 ISU Grand Prix Final was a blush/dusty rose color. Which color do YOU guys like better?

Madison Chock and Evan Bates USA Free Dance to Under Pressure by David Bowie, Freddie Mercury--The costumes here were reflective of the music; they were "New Wave"-esque with the sharp line and I liked the delicate jeweled sequin detail as well as the fringe and asymmetric skirt.

Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue USA Free Dance to I Wanna Dance With Somebody by Bootstrap, Can't Help Falling In Love performed by Ingrid Michaelson, Earned It by Bootstrap: Gorgeous, lyrical and right for the music. Her blue-gray dress was beautiful but the color and length was a bit off for my taste. I liked the delicate pleating and flower sequin detail, especially. However, overall, I thought these could have been lighter and slightly more youthful.

LADIES---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Evgenia Medvedeva Russia Short Program to River Flows in You by Lorenzo de Luca

The Winter by Balmorhea--This is a very pretty costume on Evgenia. I liked the play of sequins vs. ombre chiffon fabrication. If there's any critique, it's those darn gloves! She loves her gloves but, I just don't think they are necessary here, and yes, I know they are to protect her from cutting her hands when grabbing her skate blade, but I still don't like them.

Evgenia Medvedeva Russia Free Skate to Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Alexandre Desplat, Piano Lesson with Grandma by Alexandre Desplat: I liked the gray-to-pink ombre coloring and the sequin work of her top. I also liked the length

Elena Radionova Russia Free Skate to Turandot by Giacomo Puccini: Pretty in pink. Elena looked mature and like a "Miss Russia" winner in this; How's that for mixing Pageant and Figure Skating!

MEN-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Javier Fernandez Spain Short Program to Malaguena performed by Paco de Lucia and Placido Domingo: Javier wore this black costume of a stretch jersey long sleeve top, pants and faux leather suspenders for this skate. I liked the modernist look and not-so-obvious "Flamenco"-like costume. It was chic, if that can be said for a man (I think it can!).

Patrick Chan Canada Free Sate to A Journey by Eric Radford: For this Free Skate at the 2016 Grand Prix Finals in Marseille, Patrick changed his costume to this Tie Dye top and pants outfit. This was (thankfully) a bit more color than we would ever see from him and a nice change. While, some may argue that it wasn't much of a "costume" per se (it was just a stretch crew neck long sleeve top and pants) but well, it's Patrick Chan kids! I was happy with this, let's just leave it at that. Here's what he wore for this same Free Skate at...

Grand Prix ISU of Figure Skating Cup of China 2016--Which "costume" do you guys like better? The Tie Dye or the gray-and-black one above?

Nathan Chen USA Free Skate to Polovtsian Dances (from "Prince Igor") by Alexander Borodin: Let's give a big Hands Up In The Air for Nathan! FOUR QUADS!! And he got SILVER! In terms of his costume, I really liked this late 19th century Russian Royal look. I liked the bright red and gold top/jacket and the intricacy of the trim and sequin applique. I know this may be such a small detail but I especially liked the emerald green brooch at the center front torso.

Shoma Uno Japan Short Program to Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra ("Ladies in Lavender" soundtrack) by Nigel Hess--Shoma was definitely in tune with his "Ladies in Lavender" music with this violet/lavender hued costume. While it was a bit 80's in it's stylings, I did appreciate the sequined detail of the shirt, especially.

Yuzuru Hanyu Japan Short Program to Let's Go Crazy by Prince: Yes, it's Prince and yes, it's Yuzuru. And yes, I liked it! Purple, sleek and Glam Fabulous!

Yuzuru Hanyu Japan Free Skate to Hope and Legacy by Joe Hisaishi--I love the multicolored draped and gathered stretch chiffon top. Look at that photo: It looks easy-breezy but that top probably took hundreds of hours to get that way. I love how Yuzuru is comfortable with mixing the feminine and pretty, as well as juxtaposing it with the masculine, while also hinting at an old-school "Vintage" figure skating costume vibe.

That's it for the 2016 ISU Grand Prix Series! Stay tuned for my Best--and Uh Oh! of the US Nationals and more 2016 Skating Events!

PROJECT RUNWAY.....My TOP 5 OMG MOMENTS: Ep. 12

Welcome to Austin Texas! Nick Verreos welcomes Season 15 "Project Runway" Top Five designers on Episode 12 "Best Western Unconventional Materials Challenge

This week on Lifetime's "Project Runway" , the designers flew to Austin Texas for their last Challenge before NY Fashion Week. As it turns out, it was yet another Unconventional Materials Challenge using materials found from Georgetown Farm Supply and Stubbs BBQ. I was honored to have been on hand to help Tim Gunn introduce the Challenge at the Best Western Plus Austin City Hotel . There is lots to discuss so let's just get to my "Top 5 OMG Moments" of this Episode as well as my MyLifetime.com RECAP at the end of this blog!

First, click below to watch my "Top 5 OMG Moments Project Runway: Episode 12" on YouTube:

#1 OMG! The Designers Are Off To TEXAS Y’all! In the beginning of
the episode, Tim and Heidi decide that the designers need a change of scenery
and send them on their second trip of the season! This time, to the city that
“Keeps it Weird”: AUSTIN TEXAS!!  WHAT…In TARNATION…would make “Project
Runway” send these designers to the Lone Star State?? Well…that leads me to…

#2 OMG! I’M BAAAACK!!!! I’m always honored to join my
“Project Runway” family and be part of any new season! As a Fashion Designer,
my search for inspiration takes me around the world, and I’ve been thrilled to
partner with BEST WESTERN on many of my journeys, and now, honored to join up
with Tim Gunn to help introduce this week’s Challenge.

It's Getting Hot 'N Here: Nick Verreos and Tim Gunn, Best Western Plus Austin City Hotel, Austin Texas

Now, while y’all saw Tim
and I stand by the pool looking all dapper and easy/breezy, little did you know
that it was about 110 Degrees, VERY HUMID and both Tim and I were SCHVITZING
like Hookers in Church (Well, mostly I was!). Lord knows that all I could think
about was diving into that pool, BUT we had more important matters at hand,
which was announcing this Unconventional Materials Challenge!

#3 OMG! No Brisket or BBQ Sauce Dresses for These Designers! In
the spirit of Austin and “Keeping It Weird”, the designers were able to steer
themselves away from clichés such as Gingham table cloths, Cowboy hats and BBQ
sauce, and instead get inspired by Meal Worms, Guitar Picks, Vinyl Records and
Dog Treats of all things! Looks like they’re on the right track to following
the city’s motto. Now…if they can just step outside their silhouette comfort
zone!!!

#4 OMG! Consistent Or…Uncreative?? While consistency
is key to any successful designer’s aesthetic, and creating a cohesive identity
to your brand is essential…It’s important on a show like “Project Runway” to
show the judges a variety of design ideas and give them little “nuggets” of
surprise…Keep them INTERESTED! Unfortunately, all five designers seemed to have
fallen into a bit of a design rut:

This week, Cornelius did another sheath
dress...

Roberi never met a One Shoulder Asymmetrical Dress he didn’t like...

Rik
can’t step away from all the black and A-line...

And Erin loves
a good flower applique as much as...

Laurence loves a defined shoulder. OK kids,
we get what you’re all about, now give us something a little more…unexpected!

#5 OMG! We Have Our Final Four! First off, I will say
that to a large extent, the designers did redeem themselves from last week’s
supposedly Avant-garde Challenge. First off, Rik’s vinyl record and guitar
strap dress was edgy and impeccably made; it was very Robert Palmer Girl.
Laurence’s Gladiator Queen was powerful, sexy and mysterious, all at the same
time. Erin’s guitar pick, meal worms and
sunshade dress was an Applique Tour De Force!

And last but not least, Roberi’s
“Anxiety Knot Dress”  (above) was unique, thoughtful and almost, a work of wearable art!
Congrats to the Final Four! Can’t wait to see what you guys will be creating
for Fashion Week and how Tim reacts to your collections at those infamous Home
Visits!! Until next time….

Now, here's my MyLifetime.com RECAP:

Season 15, Episode 12 Recap: It’s High Fashion, Y’all!

Season 15 is heading into the final stretch and we are down
to the top 5 designers for this season of “Project Runway.” Even though
last week’s episode featured an avant-garde/unconventional challenge, for some
reason, this week’s was unconventional as well. Am I the only one getting the
feeling that Tim, Heidi and the producers don’t think these designers have
pushed themselves to their design limit? With this episode, they were given the
impetus to go farther than ever. Let’s see if they did…

The episode begins with Tim and Heidi walking onto the
runway stage with Heidi reminding the designers that this is the “big final
challenge”–the last one before NY Fashion Week. Tim then tells them that “a
change of scenery” is due. Miss Klum, in her best German-accented Southern
twang, announces that the designers will be going to Austin, TX!
She reminds them that the city’s unofficial motto is, “Keep Austin Weird,” and
that they will be taking the town’s eccentricities and diversities and bringing
their experiences right back to NYC. With that, Tim and Heidi sashay away.

The designers arrive in Austin, TX and
check into their Best Western hotel. A note from Tim awaits them saying to
“drop your bags, freshen up and meet up by the pool.” Along with Tim Gunn,
someone very special is there to announce the challenge: me!
