ICE STYLE.....2017 US Figure Skating Championships Costumes: Ladies and Men

Split Queen: Karen Chen doing her split jump during her Free Skate at US Figure Skating Championships

The 2017 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships were held this past week and weekend in Kansas City Missouri. The results are part of the U.S. selection criteria for who gets to go to the 2017 Four Continents and 2017 World Championships, as well as Junior World Championships. Now that we got that out of the way, it's time to discuss one of my favorite subjects here on my blog: Figure Skating Costumes!

This first post involves some Costumes Picks from the Ladies and Mens Event at the US Figure Skating Championships, and will be followed up with my recap of Pairs and Ice Dance costumes. Lots of the costumes I have already discussed before in my recaps of last year's Skate America, Cup of China, NHK Trophy, and Grand Prix Finals to name a few but there were in some instances, costumes changes and/or skaters I have not commented on previously. So let's begin with the...

Ladies------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ashley Wagner Short Program to Sweet Dreams (Are Made of These) by Annie Lennox: I've said this before and I'll say it again: I LOVE THIS! It's chic, superfab and so right for the Annie Lennox music. Ashley wore this blue asymmetrical design which featured great sequin details on the shoulders, neckline and throughout the costume's torso. I also loved the slight royal blue color "peek-a-boo". Oh and to finish everything off, her smoky eyes and red lipstick were 90's New Wave on-point. I also like her almost-black hair color (which is new).

Ashley Wagner Free Skate to Exogenesis Symphony Part 3 by Muse: for her Free Skate, Ashley did a costume change. Previously, during the 2016-2017 Season, she wore the silver and violet/gray ombre shaded sparkly costume in the lower photo above. I loved that costume and thought it looked very expensive and well done. Her new costume is the burgundy one in the top photo. This one featured a halter neckline and elongated diamond-shaped clusters of crystals. I liked the first violet/gray costume a little better to be honest; it just looks more refined, Haute and fashion thoughtful. What do you guys think?

Gracie Gold Short Program: Gracie skated her Short Program to Assassin's Tango (from "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" soundtrack) by John Powell wearing this very modern black costume and I loved it! It was fresh, directional and fashion forward, especially when it comes to figure skating costumes. I loved the bias binding "spider web-like" detail and the subtle silver crystal embellishment. It was a very close copy of this (let's just say that it was "inspired"--wink, wink):

Atelier Versace Autumn/Winter 2016

Gracie Gold USA Free Skate to Daphnis and Chloe by Maurice Ravel: While Gracie's SP costume was more modern, she went back to her "Ice Queen" look with her Free Skate costume for this season. This nude colored design was still quite fabulous and expertly done. The golden sequins were exceptional and I especially loved the hair accessory. It was Grace Kelly On Ice.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention...

Broken Up: Figure skating coaching legend Frank Carroll announced on icenetwork.com that he no longer would be coaching Gracie Gold the day after Gracie finished 6th at the 2017 US Figure Skating Championships and missed the Worlds Championships Team. Gold, on her end, said that she was "surprised that Frank announced his decision before informing me". I wish Gracie Gold and Frank Carroll the best. I'm guessing this rupture was bound to happen. No surprise there.

Karen Chen Short Program On Golden Pond by Dave Grusin: OK, when I first saw Karen in this, I thought that she was skating to "Swan Lake", "Black Swan" or "Nutcracker"...you get the picture. But no kids: She skated to "On Golden Pond"--in this! And I LOVE it. It was pretty, well made and exquisitely sequined, down to her fingertips. Gorgeous! Now, for those savvy costume followers...she debuted this costume at the 2016 NHK Trophy in late November.  Before then, for this Short Program, she had worn this...

Blue Swan: At Cup of China as well as International Figure Skating Classic in Utah

Karen Chen Free Skate to Tango Jalousie by Jacob Gade: Tango anyone? Well, for Karen, it was "Si!". Another very good costume for Karen Chen. The silver and red crystals were beautiful and the scroll-like torso detail was very pretty. For such a young lady (she's only 17), this costume was very mature, and in a super chic way!

Livvy Shilling Short Program to L.O.V.E. by Natalie Cole: I liked this red costume worn by Livvy for her Short program. It was fun and vibrant. I especially enjoyed the heavily jeweled neckline and wrists...and the extra-long sleeves added a bit of unusual costume interest.

Mariah Bell Short Program to Roxy Heart (Chicago soundtrack) performed by Renee Zellweger All That Jazz (Chicago soundtrack): This was certainly one of my favorite costumes of the entire 2016-2017 season. It had all the costume "razzle dazzle" of something accompanying "All That Jazz" but yet, not coming off too cheesy. I loved the delicate lilac coloring and jeweled sequin work.

Mariah Bell Free Skate East of Eden by Lee Holdridge: This costume was very old-school Vera Wang/Nancy Kerrigan in its silhouette and detail, and I loved it! The high-neck style, the see-through sleeves, the sequin crystal work were all very nice. As a fashion designer, I was intrigued at why the costume designer chose to use princess seams on the torso portion, especially when they are not necessarily needed when using this kind of stretch fabrication. Normally, there is no point to put seams there. It didn't take away from the costume but it did make me ask why?

Mirai Nagasu USA Short Program to Nocturne No. 20 in C Sharp Minor by Frederic Chopin: Mirai wore this purple costume for her SP and I liked it very much! Mirai always wears costumes that I appreciate and admire. This design was especially Haute and very luxurious looking with the intricate silver sequin scroll-like detail. I especially admired the "statement necklace"-looking embellishment.

Men--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vincent Zhou Short Program to Writing's on the Wall by Sam Smith, Jimmy Napes: Little Vincent was fabulous at the 2017 US Nationals, in terms of his skating. For his Short Program to the James Bond 007 title song, he wore this burgundy and gray ensemble. I cannot lie and say that I loved it; it bored me to (costume) tears. I get the whole "I'm just going to wear a dress shirt and pants" and kind of mimic James Bond Lite and look contemporary but...this was "MEH" for sure. It makes think that the creative team just isn't doing their job at 110%.

Vincent Zhou Free Skate to Johnny Staccato by Elmer Bernstein: His Free Skate look was a little more creative and interesting, thank goodness. Vincent wore this tuxedo-like look, involving a crystal studded shirt, vest and velvet tuxedo pants. It's cute and a bit "Junior Skater" but, at least it was Costume Interesting.

Jason Brown USA Short Program to Writing's on the Wall (James Bond - Spectre) by Sam Smith: Jason wore the white dress shirt/black pants look (lower photo above) in his performances/skates during the season last year at Skate America and NHK Trophy and I wasn't a fan (the "costume" was a yawn) but...for this 2017 US Figure Skating Championships, he changed his costume to something more substantial and interesting. The look featured a double breasted gray jacket with faux leather shoulder yokes, sleeve bands and welt pockets. This was a definite improvement from the "I'm-a-waiter-about-to-be-relieved-of-my-duties look".

Jason Brown Free Skate to The Scent of Love (from "The Piano") by Michael Nyman: For his Free Skate, he went with an all-black shirt and pants look. You probably guessed correctly that I am not a fan of this. I get the simple "classic" look in regards to his accompanying music, but I hoped, wished...for something more. Maybe this is a "cleansing" from his "Leprechaun" look of the Sochi Olympics...but I still don't approve of it.

Ross Miner Short Program to New York State of Mind by Billy Joel: OK, I know that Ross is skating to Billy Joel and "New York State of Mind" and therefore, there's not much of a costume that can accompany that. But...this was THE DEFINITION of my dreaded "Ross Dress For Less" costume; the bland dress shirt, black pants, off-the-rack department store belt...I am so bored with his costume that I don't even want to visit New York, if this is what that city represents, fashion-wise. He looks like a bartender at a really low-level club in New Jersey. But, come to think of it, maybe that was the point!

Ross Miner Free Skate to Somebody to Love, Love of my Life and Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen: For his FS, he slightly redeemed himself--costume-wise. I liked the ombre-shaded red-and-black printed top with the gold sequined neckline. This was Ross Miner really stepping out of his costume zone and I applaud him for it. But, I still think this could have been better; it is QUEEN after all!

Tomoki Hiwatashi Short Program Some Things and Big and Bad by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy: Little Tomoki wore this colorful costume to his Short program. While it was slightly "kooky" and "Halloween Costume"-like, I am giving him and his costume designer points for making me notice! And in a good way: I liked this! It was fun, right for the music and had lots of neat details (loved the blue t-shirt look under the epaulet-detailed shirt!).

Max Aaron Short Program to Nessun dorma by Giacomo Puccini: Max is not known for being "Costume effusive" in terms of what he wears, and frankly, it can be a little (sometimes a lot!) disappointing in my fashion designer eyes. But, for the 2017 US Nationals and his SP, he BROUGHT IT!! I almost fell off my couch and dropped my glass of red wine while watching it: Max was actually wearing a Stylish Fashionable...COSTUME! As opposed to a tight white shirty and tighter black pants! I liked the gold embroidered bolero, royal blue shirt and Toreador-like pant. Listen, at least it was an improvement from this:

Yawn...Max Aaron'c Short Program costume worn at the 2016 Prudential US Figure Skating Championships, and 2016 World Championships Boston in March

Jordan Moeller Free Skate to Selections from William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet Film Soundtrack by Craig Armstrong: Jordan skated to Rome + Juliet and I realized that right away.  Obviously the music was a hint, but his costume had subtle giveaways. And I appreciated that. It wasn't an obvious ensemble from the time period of the famous Shakespeare play (14th Century) but had slight nods--such as the gold chains, and sequined hearts (on his sleeves of course!). I also appreciated the armor-like metallic fabrication and  blouson shape of the top.

Nathan Chen Short Program Le Corsaire by Adolphe Adam: Amazing Nathan (FIVE QUADS!!!) wore this black lace top and black pants costume for his Short Program. I liked the simplicity and  elegance of it, especially since, let's just be honest, NO ONE was really paying attention to his costume and instead, watching how many QUADS this young man would do! I'm sure you might have noticed that he had a slight "wardrobe malfunction" when one of his center front "buttons" snapped open while he was doing one of his TWENTY quads (yes, I am exaggerating, but still!) but other than that, everything else was OK. I liked the great fit and look of a mini cropped bolero jacket.

Nathan Chen USA Free Skate to Polovtsian Dances (from "Prince Igor") by Alexander Borodin: I really liked this late 19th century Russian Royal look. I liked the bright red and gold top/jacket and the intricacy of the trim and sequin applique. I know this may be such a small detail but I especially liked the emerald green brooch at the center front torso. The entire look was regal and elegant and perfectly suited for the newly crowned "King of Figure Skating"!!!

Five Quad Phenom: Happy Boy--and Coach--Nathan Chen and (rarely smiling or happy) coach Rafael Arutyunyan (R)

Therefore, this collection suggested "Doomsday"-like fashion...it reminded me of stylish Eastern European spies from East Berlin.

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss Universe 2016 Governors Ball Evening Gowns: My Top 15 Best!

Miss Universe Indonesia Kezia Warouw--Best of The Governors Ball Gowns? Keep reading...

As part of the 65th Annual Miss Universe Pageant happening in the Philippines, the Miss Universe 2016 Governors Ball occurred Monday night at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. The Governors Ball is a Miss Universe tradition, a fundraiser which pageant winners, the host country, sponsors and many VIPs attend to support the Miss Universe charities.

Gown Gals--Miss Universe 2016 contestants at the 65th Miss Universe Governors Ball Welcome Dinner, SMX Convention Center Pasay City Philippines

The Governors Ball also served as the official Welcome Dinner with guests dishing out Php 180,000 (the equivalent of $3600!) per ticket to attend and enjoyed Hors D'Oeurvres of Salmon Tartar, White Anchovy and Flaked Chicken and Main Entree of Prawns Catalan with Mesclum on Crispy Noodles...

A $3600 Dinner--Menu of the 65th Miss Universe Governors Ball Welcome Dinner

Besides the fancy dinner, the main attraction were the 86 Miss Universe 2016 contestants who all showed up in Evening Gowns for all the super rich to see--and for us Pageant Fashion Fans--to comment on....

Ready To Not Eat an Expensive Dinner!--Miss Universe 2016 contestants ready to head out to the Miss Universe Governors Ball Welcome Dinner

There were lots of gowns on display--86 of them obviously!--Soooo here are my Top 15 List of BEST GOWNS at the 65th Annual Governors Ball...Now, before I start, I must give Gown Props to the reigning Miss Universe, Philippines-own Pia Wurtzbach:

Universal Queen: Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach made her entrance to the Governors Ball in this black lace ballgown. The style featured a lady-like batteau neckline, fitted dress with full overskirt. The gown fit beautifully (Perfect length: No sign of tacky platform heels!) and she looked like a Miss Universe!

And now, my Top 15! Beginning with my Top Favorite...

1. Miss Universe Indonesia Kezia Warouw: Kezia looked OMG! GOWN GORGEOUS! in this gown at the Governors Ball. The fitted Songket Gown was designed by Anaz Couture, featured gold lace applique, royal blue satin backing with more gold sequined lace embellishment throughout. The style also had a center front slit and see-through side torso panels. It was EXQUISITE and perfect. Double for her hair and makeup as well as accessories. Between that ring and the oversized gold clutch...she just may be a Fashion Gay Man's Best Friend!

Score: 9.92

2. Miss Universe U.S. Virgin Islands Carolyn Carter: Not sure how Carolyn was able to procure a $100,000 costing Couture Gown from Elie Saab, but she did! For the Governors Ball, she wore this stunning ballgown from Elie Saab Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2015. Now, yes, it's from a collection from 3 years ago but darlings...Haute Couture is timeless (and maybe this is what their PR offices were able to let her borrow! Who knows?). Regardless, I loved it--and she better treat it like a big ol' diamond necklace after she's done with it! The merlot colored gown is stunning--all hand made--with sequined applique and a thin silk velvet belt at the waist. I also loved how she wore her hair and styled the look with those earrings and nude clutch: A+

Score: 9.90

3. Miss Universe Philippines Maxine Medina: Maxine--the hometown girl--wore this burnt orange gown and it was one of my top favorites. The strapless ballgown was designed by Filipino designer Rhett Eala and featured a clean minimalist silhouette with a single silver crystal embellished detail down the center front. It was chic, elegant and one of the best of of the night.

Score: 9.85

4. Miss Universe Thailand Chalita Suansane: One of the favorites of the pageant--Miss Universe Thailand--wore this fabulous column gown for the Governors Ball. The dress featured black and white sequined and textured fabric and more importantly, a gorgeous white satin bow detail that added a definite Gown Exclamation Point! The style fit her beautifully and that oversized bow detail gave a nod back to the Fab 80's/90's of those "Miss Venezuela Pageant" gowns of yesteryear. Her severe center-parted hairstyle and lovely makeup, made her look like an actress walking the Cannes Red Carpet.

Score: 9.60

5. Miss Universe Kenya Mary Esther Were: This almost 6 foot beauty looked every bit an African Queen in this beautiful column gown by Kenyan designer Jamil Walji.  I placed it as one of my Top Favorites for its design, fit, and impact. I loved the subtle hints of Kenyan Tradition with the mix of colors and prints as well as the look of suede (or was it Ultrasuede?) for the gown textile. Mary Esther looked DIVINE!

Score: 9.50

6. Miss Universe Albania Lindita Idrizi: Frilly-haired Lindita wore this red ballgown which I liked. The design took the "Princess Dress" look but gave a bit of new direction with the fabric and style. It featured a mesh-like top with long sleeves and a full ballgown skirt (not sure if its fur or crushed tulle), and a matching red tulle petticoat underneath which gave it more fullness. I thought she made quite an entrance and achieved the goal of being impacting and not blending in!

Score: 9.25

7. Miss Universe Barbados Shannon Harris: Shannon wore this gown from Miss Universe sponsor Sherri Hill and it looked GORGEOUS on her. The fit-to-flare dress featured a blush/nude design with vertical layers of crystal beading and oversized gold embellishment toward the horsehair-trimmed hem. The gown fit her PERFECTLY and she looked like a runway model for one of Sherri Hill's shows. PS: Sherri Hill PR Department: Hire her for one of your next NY Fashion Week Shows--or at least, to do a web look book!

Score: 9.10

8. Miss Universe India Roshmitha Harimurthy: Miss Universe India wore this Traditional Indian-style gown from Abhishek Studio. The design featured gold, pink and emerald colors in a print, and was beaded and beautifully embellished. I though she looked like a Bollywood actress. I just wished her hair was more Couture (to match her gown) and less "I just came from the gym"; it was just a bit flat--she need a major Volume Boost!

Score: 9.10

9. Miss Universe Dominican Republic Rosalba Garcias: The almost 6 feet tall--and doppelganger for Venezuelan model Patricia Velazquez--Rosalba wore a flower printed gown from Dominican designer Leonel Lirio. The off-the-shoulder gown also had a hi-lo hemline and was lined in red satin. She looked like an Oscar de la Renta muse--very "cha-cha" but in a chic Couture sort of way!

Score: 9.00

10. Miss Universe Malaysia Kiran Jassal: Dressed in Malaysian designer brand Cosry , Kiran stood out at the Governors Ball in this flower printed silk satin gown. The style had a high batteau neck, fitted column gown and gathered full ballgown overskirt. I thought she looked like a very wealthy socialite/red carpet actress. There were several printed gowns at the 65th Miss Universe Governors Ball and this was one of the better ones!

Score: 9.00

11. Miss Universe Netherlands Zoey Ivory: Miss Universe Netherlands wore a gown designed by Anaz , the same designer who provided Miss Universe Indonesia's gown. I thought this golden gown was absolutely gorgeous. The detail of the embellishment was exquisite and it fit her quite nicely. I was a little bit concerned with the possible showing of her breast pads (not sure?) and I just wish her hair was either an up-do or slicked back Diva. But, other than that, this gown: Golden Goddess.

Score: 9.00

12. Miss Universe Tanzania Jihan Dimachk: Jihan wore this silver and gold sequined gown at the Governors Ball. The dress style featured a fitted bustier top and fit-to-flare bottom silhouette. I thought she looked like a Victoria's Secret model--or Supermodel wife of a Footballer! The dress fit nice and was Glam-o-Licious.

Score: 8.99

13. Miss Universe Nicaragua Marina Jacoby: Marina's gown was designed by Nicaraguan designer  Harry Garay . The style was a ballgown full shape with iridescent white fabrication and baby blue sequined applique detail. She looked quite pretty and like a modern Cinderella.

Score: 8.90

14. Miss Universe Peru Valeria Piazza: The Peruvian beauty queen wore this gown from Peruvian designer Xavier Cordova . The strapless design was silver with hand-sewn Brusels Lace sewn near the torso at the sides. She looked regal and quite beautiful. Good choice of shoes too!

Score: 8.75

Finally...

15. Miss Universe Singapore Cheryl Chou: Cheryl wore this creme colored lace gown with a feathered detail at the shoulder. She looked like a beautiful and elegant actress getting ready for her red carpet entrance. Therefore, she ended up in my Top 15 Gowns of the 65th Miss Universe Governors Ball.

Score: 8.74

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss Universe 2016 Terno Fashion Show

Miss Unirverse Goes Terno: The 65th Miss Universe Cultural Terno Show, Vigan Ilocos Sur, Philippines

If you have been keeping up with my latest "Sashes and Tiaras" blogs HERE and HERE, the 65th Annual Miss Universe Pageant is in full swing. The pageant is occurring in the Philippines. Throughout this past week and into the weekend, all the 86 contestants vying for the coveted international beauty title have been arriving and several activities have already taken place, which will all lead up to the Finals on January 30th. Sunday night, 20 Miss Universe contestants went to Vigan, a city located on the island of Luzon. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is one of the few Hispanic towns--known for its cobblestone streets and Filipino/Oriental/European colonial architecture--left in the Philippines whose structures have remained intact.

Sequins, Applique, Lace...Ternos: Display of Ternos from the Miss Universe 2016 Cultural Terno Show, Vigan Philippines

This was the site of the Miss Universe "Cultural Terno Show" which involved a fashion show showcasing the contestants in Terno gowns. Terno is the modern-day version of what was originally the Maria Clara or Traje de Mestiza back in the early 1900s. The gown features large "Butterfly" sleeves and usually a column-like fitted long skirt but could also be a fuller one.

Terno Duo: Miss Universe Bulgaria and Miss Universe Philippines pose with their Terno gowns--Miss Universe 2016 Cultural Terno Show, Vigan Philippines

It's become a popular look for many Miss Philippines to wear as their "National Costume" for international beauty pageants. The 20 Miss Universe contestants wore these Terno designs from various Filipino designers--both from Manila as well as from the Ilocos Province. Here are all the 20 contestants and designs with my scores...

Miss Universe 2016 Terno Fashion Show: Miss Universe Thailand, Miss Universe Venezuela, Miss Universe Belgium, Miss Universe Philippines--Which One of These Was my No. 1? Keep reading....

Miss Universe Nicaragua Marina Jacoby Santos: Of all the 20 designs, this one received my lowest score. This wasn't because it was cray-cray or tasteless, etc. Most of the Terno gowns that were shown at this "Miss Universe Cultural Terno Show" were quite nice and really, there weren't any real "misses". The reason this one, worn by Miss Universe Nicaragua, ended up here was because it was slightly boring in its design. The powder pink dress was very traditional and "just there"; while quite nice and pretty, there was nothing extraordinary about it. If you want to be the "Wallflower Terno Gal", wear this.

Score: 7.80

Miss Universe Malaysia Kiran Jassal: Next on my list is this design worn by Miss Universe Malaysia. This gown from Edgar Madamba was unique and a bit quirky. I liked the pointy bodice edges but I wasn't a fan of the "Butterfly sleeve"-shaped skirt. And the pink embellishments seemed a bit "Fashion School-y". And yeah, the too-short length and the fact that I could see her BEIGE WEDGE PLATFORM HEELS (What the HAILLL???), well, this is why I gave her...

Score: 7.82

Miss Universe Cayman Islands Monyque Brooks: This was a very interesting design worn by Miss Universe Cayman Islands. For whatever it's worth, this gown was supposed to have been worn (according to the pageant fans on the web) by Miss Universe Colombia but because she had just arrived in the Philippines, she was unable to be part of this group of 20 contestants. Anyhow...this design by Cherry Veric was an "original" version of the Terno. And while I appreciate this, it was a little too "wild" and kooky. I loved the colors and the designers' take on the iconic "Butterfly" sleeves but...it was slightly too costume-y, and not in a good "Miss Universe" sort of way.

Score: 7.84

Miss Universe Great Britain Jamie-Lee Faulkner: Jamie-Lee wore this canary yellow and white Terno gown for the show. This Eroll Raminajes design was nice but basically, just that: Nice. I think the combination of the bright yellow and white took it to Prom-and-Pageant Betty territory.

Score: 7.85

Miss Universe British Virgin Islands Erika Creque: Erika wore this gold and black jacquard fit-and-flare Terno gown from designer Barge Ramos. The gown fit nicely, but I wish the sleeves were a little more dramatic and the length was to the floor (it was too short); I was really NOT A FAN of seeing those peep-toe nude heels with this gown. They were NOT for this dress.

Score: 7.88

Miss Universe Vietnam Dan Thi Le Hang: Miss Universe Vietnam went "Terno Princess" with this Cathy Capistrano-designed gown. The red gown featured the traditional "Butterfly" sleeves and the skirt was full and more ballgown shaped--as opposed to the more popular column/fitted one. Once again there was really nothing tacky, tasteless or bad about this, it was just soooo "Miss World" Quinceanera Princess. She looked pretty but there was nothing sexy or Runway Diva about this.

Score: 7.90

Miss Universe Uruguay Magdalena Cohendet: I liked the contrast of the royal blue and ivory colors on this gown designed by Sunny Boy Mindo (Love that name BTW!). And the intricate applique details were quite beautiful but...for some reason this gown (maybe it was the too-high neckline and hairstyle) that made Magdalena look a bit mumsy and "Madame".

Score: 8.00

Miss USA Deshauna Barber: Deshauna wore this magenta and white Terno gown from designer Raffy Sy. I loved the colors and especially the OVERSIZED Butterfly sleeves; she was like Imelda Marcos on Design Overload! I was just concerned with the wrinkles on the gown and I think that hairstyle did not help.

Score: 8.10

Miss Universe Guatemala Virginia Argueta: Virginia wore this simple Terno gown designed by Mike Dela Rosa. I liked its clean column silhouette and the gold lace was beautiful. This gown worked beautifully on Miss Universe Guatemala. Her hair and makeup were on-point. If there was any critique, I wish the gown had a little more train, the sleeves were a little bigger and she wouldn't have worn those shoes.

Score: 8.15

Miss Universe Slovak Republic Zuzana Kolarova: Zuzana wore this emerald green gown from Filipino designer Jan Van Paquing featuring a chiffon overlay, column gown and fitted bodice. I loved the color and that black sequined applique in the front. The sleeves were perfectly puffy. Once again would I wish she wouldn't have worn those peep-toe heels: YES!!!! But, I am sure, she had no choice.

Score: 8.50

Miss Universe Bulgaria Violina Ancheva: Miss Universe Bulgaria wore this emerald green (a popular color!) Terno gown for the Miss Universe 2016 Cultural Terno Show. The dress, designed by Vince Sityar, looked well-made and featured duchesse satin fabrication and heavily beaded from heavy to light. It was quite pretty and expensive looking. She looked like a rich Terno-loving society gal!

Score: 8.55

Miss Universe Singapore Cheryl Chou Zhi Hiu: I thought that this golden sequined gown worn by Miss Universe Singapore was one of the better-looking ones from the show. The dress was designed by Jearsond Demovivas and featured shimmery golden colored sequined fabric, a center front slit and fuchsia colored jeweled beads in the torso and sleeves. She looked like a true Diva--or like the girlfriend or wife of a very, very wealthy diplomat--or arms dealer!

Score: 8.95

Miss Universe Netherlands Zoey Ivory: Zoey wore one of my top favorite Terno designs of the night. I liked the emerald color, the unusual and creative top section, as well as the ruffled tier design and nude illusion with gold sequin detail. The gown was designed by Danika Damo. This was a nice way to depart from the "traditional Terno" and still make it look chic and runway fashion. I wish the front went to the floor (Was it supposed to be Hi-Lo? Because if so, it need to be HIGHER!). But, look at her shoes: NO TACKY CLUNKY PLATFORM HEELS!! YEAYYYY Miss Universe Netherlands!

Score: 9.00

Miss Universe Brazil Raissa Santana: Miss Universe Brazil is causing quite a storm in the Philippines. Ever since she arrived, she's been one of the favorites for the crown and has been doing everything just right. Here she wore this ivory 1940's-like Terno designed by Joel Acebuche featuring a triple ruffle tiered peplum, and red flower applique. I loved everything about it and especially that BIG OL' flower in her hair; she looked like a jazz singer in 1944 in the most chi-chi club in Manila!

Score: 9.25

Miss Universe Czech Republic Andrea Beldekova: I loved this black Terno gown designed by Mimi Pimentel. Even though it lacked color and elaborate sequin applique, it still made a strong impact. I thought it was not only modern, chic but Paris Haute Couture runway fab.

Score: 9.35

Miss Universe Sierra Leone Hawa Kamara: Hawa is quickly becoming the fashionista of this year's Miss Universe Pageant, posting all these fab selfies of her outfits, always looking very fashion-forward. Here, she continued her fashion-savvy title (Will there be a "Most Stylish Contestant" at Miss Universe 2016?) with this Darwin Ramirez-designed red Terno gown. The style was SPECTACULAR; I loved the bright red color, the perfectly fitting design and especially the way it looked on her. She did keep lifting it up because it was a bit too long but, she still looked Terno-gorgeous!

Miss Universe Philippines Maxine Medina: Maxine looked like a QUEEN in this gorgeous gown from Filipino Couturier Albert Andrada. The silver sequined-and-white gown fit her beautifully and honestly, there was nothing wrong with it; the length was perfect, no platform heels...virtually flawless. If a very wealthy Filipina socialite/actress is going to get married soon, look no further, this is your Wedding Terno Gown darling!

Score: 9.50

Miss Universe Belgium Stephanie Geldof: One of my Top Three Favorite Terno Gowns of the night was this design worn by Miss Universe Belgium. I adored this jewel green gown designed by Russ Cuevas. Everything about it was perfection: The fit, the white applique, those gorgeous Butterfly sleeves. And just look at that perfect length! Even her center-parted hair style was on-point.

Score: 9.65

Miss Universe Thailand Chalita Suansane: This was a DIVA Terno Gown if I ever saw one. The Rian Fernandez design and all the intricate sequined lace work was exquisite! I also loved the stiffened overskirt which added major DRAMA to the design. And I would be remiss if I did not highlight those fabulous Butterfly sleeves: WOW! If you want to make an entrance, this is a sure fire way of doing so. PS: I feel bad for the other girls (Miss Universe Nicaragua, Malaysia, Great Britain) who got the "economy class" versions of this.

Score: 9.85

Miss Universe Venezuela Marian Habach: And my Top Favorite for Best Terno Gown is...Frederick Berches' design for Miss Universe Venezuela. This gold mermaid-shaped Terno gown was EVERYTHING! I loved the fabrication, the silhouette, the fit, the folded volants...this was the Rolls Royce of Gowns at this Miss Universe Cultural Terno Show. Stunning.

Score: 9.95

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss Universe 2016 National Costumes: Part 2

Sea Goddess: Miss Universe Venezuela  Mariam Habach rises from the Caribbean Sea with her "Miss Venezuela" National Costume for Miss Universe 2016

Continuing with my "Miss Universe 2016 National Costumes Preview", in my last post HERE, I discussed the national costumes that some of the Miss Universe 2016 contestants will be wearing for the international beauty pageant. Now, it's time for my Part Two Post--with ten more National Costumes from Miss Malaysia to Miss Vietnam. Some are quite breathtaking, super-fab and in contention for Best National Costume at the 65th Annual Miss Universe:

Miss Universe Malaysia Kiran Jassal:  This costume for Miss Universe Malaysia has caused quite a stir on social media for being so "out there"/non-traditional and yes, avant-garde. Designed by the duo of Rizman Ruzaini, the national costume is a glittery silver jumpsuit inspired by the Petronas Twin Towers--which is prominently featured on her shoulders and arms.

The design is embellished with thousands of Swarovski crystals over a nude-colored fabric base. The crystal choker on her neck represents the sky bridge that connects the two towers. Personally, I think it's SUPERFAB and kudos to the designers for thinking outside the traditional national costume box.

Miss Universe Nigeria Unoaku Anyadike: Miss Universe Nigeria went traditional with this red and white applique costume entitled the "Queen of Benin Kingdom". I LOVE the headdress and the beaded neck-piece and jewelry but, I just wish there was a way of making this look a bit more "Haute Couture-meets-Victoria's Secret Fashion Show". Can we put her in a red and white jumpsuit with red beaded feathered wing?? On second thought...maybe not. What do you guys think?

Miss Universe Paraguay Andrea Melgarejo: Andrea's national costume is inspired by "The Legend of Mburucuya Flower", a story about forbidden love between a Spanish catholic girl an a local Indian boy. The story goes that when she found out that her lover had been killed on her father's order, she decided to kill herself by stabbing her heart with an arrow, then she died next to her lover. After the tragedy, a peculiar new plant grew on the unfortunate couple's grave. The plant opens its charmed beautiful flowers during day, and closed at night. It's a bit macabre but lovely...at the same time. I love the bold print and strong violet color and I think the immensity of the sweep of the dress will be quite impacting.

Miss Universe Poland Izabella Krzan: Miss Universe Poland went with a hybrid of Fashion and Traditional. The Fashion comes in with the asymmetrical white gown silhouette while the traditional is seen in the headdress and flower embroidery. It's OK but not memorable, especially compared to some of the others I have already shown.

Miss Universe Puerto Rico Brenda Jimenez: This costume from Miss Universe Puerto Rico is designed by Javier Arnaldo Santiago--in collaboration with Fabian De La Puente and Jesus Manuel Davila who did the crown and accessories. The entire look represents the Puerto Rican crest/coat of arms--or escudo (photo above). I think Brenda will make quite a National Costume impression with this for sure!

Miss Universe Sweden Ida Ovmar: This costume is designed by Avid Arik Herman (who also designed Miss Universe Austria's national costume. It is entitled "Dress of Dreams", which according to this, represents the vision that every child has the "opportunity to be loved and the possibility to fulfill their dreams". The strapless asymmetrical hi-lo ballgown design is quite simple and features photos of children on the dress. We'll see how it will be accessorized to make a stronger stage impact like last year's fabulous Miss Universe Sweden costume:

Miss Universe Sweden 2015 Paulina Brodd National Costume

Miss Universe Switzerland Dijana Cvijetic: Dijana's costume is far from being a traditional Swiss folk costume. The look featured a gold "Mantilla"-like headdress, a leotard/bodysuit and bold sequined embroidered overskirt. I'm thinking her costume celebrates the Swiss art of lace and embroidery--especially from the town of St. Gallen--known for providing laces and embroidery from Jakob Schlaepfer and Bischoff, for Haute Couture fashion houses. Just my guess...or at least if I wrote the P.R. release, that would be the "story".

Miss Universe Thailand Chalita Suansane: One of the most anticipated national costumes for this year's "Miss Universe" is the one designed for Miss Universe Thailand. Entitled "Jewel of Thailand", it features a gold long sleeve top with a sabai, and matching skirt. It was inspired by a type of traditional Thai dress named "Siwalai", which Queen Sirikit used to wear decades ago:

Thai Couture Diva: Queen Sirikit of Thailand

The designer won 20,000 Thai baht (about $560 US dollars at today's exchange rate) for his winning design entry; I'm thinking he should have gotten much more! The design is spectacular and worthy of being in a Costume Museum and certainly more than a $560 prize; Creating that costume alone--sewing, fabric, pattern, fittings and design fee...well, any designer worth their design resume would charge about $10,000.

Sketch and accessories: The costume was designed by culture scholar Hirankrit Pattaraboriboonkool and is decorated with 100,000 Swarovski crystals including the platform stacked heel pumps (as seen from photo above). Although it's not as fun-fab as last year's Miss Universe Thailand national costume, it might get lots of attention still...

Last year's Miss Universe Thailand National Costume Winner "Tuk Tuk" costume--Winner of the "Miss Universe 2015 National Costume" Award

Miss Universe Venezuela Mariam Habach: Her national costume is designed by Venezuelan designer Nidal Nouaihed and represents a Sea Goddess, inspired by the Caribbean Sea, with lots of pearls, sea horse allegory, and multi tiers suggesting the sea's waters and waves. It is a work of National Costume Haute Couture Art!

Miss Universe Vietnam Dang Thi Le Hang: Miss Universe Vietnam's has FIVE--count them--FIVE costumes. Well, The public had to chose ONE. I wonder which one was chosen.

Personally, I love all of them, but...the one inspired by Bamboo/Rattan Knitting (photo above) is my favorite. But, seriously, any of these would be going ABOVE-AND-BEYOND the National Costume Design level!

Which ones are YOUR FAVORITES so far???
