SASHES AND TIARAS.....MISS UNIVERSE 2018 Preliminary Competition: My TOP 20 BEST GOWNS!
Top Gowns--(L to R) Miss Universe Canada Marta Stepien, Miss Universe Indonesia Sonia Fergina Citra, Miss Universe Vietnam H'Hen Nei, Miss Universe Laos On-anong Homsombath, Miss Universe South Africa Tamaryn Green--Miss Universe 2018 Preliminary Competition
If you have been keeping up with my "Sashes And Tiaras" BLOG here--and are a BIG pageant fan-- you may know that the 67th Annual Miss Universe Beauty Pageant is taking place in Thailand with the Finals happening on December 17th ( Sunday December 16th in the USA ). I have already discussed the National Costumes HERE and earlier this week was the ever-important Preliminary Competition, which happened at the Impact Arena in Bangkok Thailand, site of the Final Crowning Night. The Preliminaries decide which of the 94 contestants will go on to compete as a Semi-finalists in the 2018 Miss Universe pageant and be a possible contender for the crown. During the 2018 Miss Universe Preliminary Competition Show, the contestants from all over the world showed off their toned figures during the Swimsuit Competition and then, it was time for the Evening Gown Preliminary Competition, which is of course, what I am more interested in.
There were Two Top Gown Trends of this very important International Pageant Night. First, the Silver/Golden and Nude Sequined Gowns:
Silver and Golden Beauties--(L to R) Miss Universe Kenya Wabaiya Kariuki, Miss Universe Venezuela Sthefany Gutierrez, Miss Universe Canada Marta Stepien, Miss Universe Brazil Mayra Dias and Miss Universe Bolivia Joyce Prado--Miss Universe 2018 Preliminary Competition
And the Color Queens:
Universal Technicolor--(L to R) Miss Universe Malta Francesca Misfud, Miss Universe Indonesia Sonia Fergina Citra, Miss Universe Vietnam H'Hen Nie, Miss Universe Nigeria Aramide Lopez, Miss Universe El Salvador Marisela de Montecristo--Miss Universe 2018 Preliminary Competition
Combining these two BIG Gown Trends of the night, here are my TOP 20 BEST EVENING GOWNS of Miss Universe 2018 Preliminary Competition. I start with my Number One...
1. Miss Universe Vietnam H'hen Nie--Miss Universe Vietnam SLAYED the runway and stage in this canary yellow gown. Not only was the walk, attitude and runway performance worthy of a standing ovation, the gown delighted me with its bright color, flourish of exuberant chiffon/georgette and torso draped sequins. Normally I am not a fan of those "button earrings" and those platform nude heels but...DARLING, she brought the Preliminaries Evening Gown Competition House DOWN! All the other 93 ladies needed to get trained by HER! Like NOW.
Score: 9.92
2. Miss Universe Indonesia Sonia Fergina Citra--Sonia Fergina showed up to pay the GOWN RENT at the Miss Universe 2018 Preliminaries. I loved this red dress which featured long exaggerated "Elizabethan"-like sleeves, Princess seam front slits, and a sexy fitted gown with red ruby jeweled crystal embellishments. She looked DIVINE, regal and crown-worthy. If there was any critique, having both slits in the side front made for that center front panel to scoop up under her legs and was runway-awkward.
Score: 9.90
3. Miss Universe Canada Marta Stepien--One word: WOW. Of all the silver/golden/nude sequined gowns that paraded down the stage/runway during the 2018 Miss Universe Preliminary Competition, Miss Universe Canada's was the best. Not only did it fit her to perfection, it looked natural on her and really magnified her already stunning physique and beauty. The dress was designed by Dubai-based Filipino designer Michael Cinco .
Score: 9.87
4. Miss Universe South Africa Tamaryn Green--Dressed in an off-the-shoulder ivory gown from Galluzi e Gini Tamaryn looked like a Gown Angel! I thought she did a fabulous job on stage at the 2018 Miss Universe Preliminaries in this dress featuring an ivory colored crepe column gown (which was perfect against her skin color) with sequined details and a double chiffon cape. The gown was simple, exquisite and still had immediate impact. On this alone, I would give her the Miss Universe 2018 crown: Back-to-back darlings.
Score: 9.85
5. Miss Universe Malta Francesca Mifsud--Designed by Moda Ivanka Philippines, this emerald green gown was a STUNNER on the stage, really making Miss Universe Malta look like a DIVA. The design featured a sequined strapless-like dress with super high side front slit opening and full satin overskirt that added drama to entire look. I also loved her hair styling but would have preferred matching color strappy heels, as opposed to those platform nude ones.
Score: 9.75
6. Miss Universe Peru Romina Lozano--There were several red gowns at this year's Miss Universe pageant and this one was my Top Favorite. Designed by Xavier Cordova, this strapless dress fit Romina perfectly and made her look both regal and beauty queen fab! I especially liked the mesh-like crystal work and leather-like satin fabrication.
Score: 9.60
7. Miss Universe Mexico Andrea Toscano--I had to add another fab red dress after another! Here--Miss Universe Mexico Andrea Toscano wore this red sequined lace design which was quite impacting and stood out among a sea of silver/golden/nude dresses. I loved the drama, the late 60's/early 70's Elizabeth Taylor-like look...I could just imagine a starlet in Acapulco having Cadillac Margaritas in this with gold bejeweled sandals...and lots of very handsome and rich men beside her!
Score: 9.50
8. Miss Universe El Salvador Marisela de Montecristo--This canary yellow sequined gown was designed by GLAUDI Collection by Johanna Hernandez and it looked GREAT on Miss Universe El Salvador. I loved the bright color, the leaf sequined embellishments...a fabulous dress for her moment on the Miss Universe 2018 Preliminary Competition stage. It there was any critique, I would be slightly questionable of that pointing-down leaf design right there by her you-know-what...but overall, it was a beautiful dress.
Score: 9.40
9. Miss Universe Laos On-anong Homsombath--I thought Miss Universe Laos' powder blue gown was pretty, elegant and fit nicely. While one has to be very careful with these "Pageant Betty"-like colors, this design looked expensive and rich and the satin bow in the front added a bit of Alta Moda detail. I was also a BIG fab of the PERFECT nude strappy heels! Thank you.
Score: 9.30
10. Miss Universe Bolivia Joyce Prado--This was one of the TOP BEST silver and nude gowns of the Preliminaries. The fit, the length, the design...Muy Bien! The gown looked expensive, had gorgeous sequined-and-fringe beading and shined onstage.
Score: 9.25
11. Miss Universe Lebanon Maya Reaidy--Lilac beautiful. I loved this lilac colored gown worn by Miss Universe Lebanon Maya Reaidy. The design featured a strapless fitted crystal gown with high side slit and georgette-crepe overskirt. It looked Paris Fashion Week fab as well as had Pageant Stage impact necessary for Miss Universe.
Score: 9.15
12. Miss Universe Nigeria Aramide Lopez--Aramide sauntered down the Miss Universe runway stage during the Preliminaries Evening Gown Competition looking every inch a Top Model in this blue jewel colored shimmering gown. The one shoulder, side-draped design showed off her lean and 6' 1" physique beautifully! I didn't even hate those strappy platform pumps: She worked them as if the rent was due darlings!
Score: 9.10
13. Miss Universe Brazil Mayra Dias--Mayra was one of the Golden Nude Queens in this gown from Brazilian fashion designer based in Sao Paulo, Fabiana Milazzo . The gown featured a shimmering golden-nude base with "striped" crystal details, body hugging seaming and delicate cascade side drapes. If there was any critique, it would be the bust pads that were a teeny bit distracting; not sure what else I would have done as a designer or stylist to not have them there other than maybe line the stomach area as well so it would make for a nicer--and less distracting--transition. Other than this, it was a stunner of a dress.
Score: 9.00
14. Miss Universe Ghana Diata Hoggar--Diata wore this gown designed by Ghana-based designer Ophelia Crossland and I liked it so much that I had to include her in my TOP 20 BEST GOWNS. The dress featured elaborate bead work throughout, over a light peach-colored base, a side front slit, back peplum and cap sleeves. I thought this could have gone "too muchey" but it all came together quite nicely--plus the fit was perfection, down to the proper length. And I LOVED the gold strappy heels. Thank you!
Score: 8.90
15. Miss Universe Venezuela Sthefany Gutierrez--Sthefany made her Evening Gown appearance at the Miss Universe 2018 Preliminaries in a silver-nude gown from Venezuelan designer Nihal Nouaihed . The fitted dress which featured long sleeves, had beautiful silver sequins in a "fireworks"-like display over a nude illusion base. It was simple, and gave an almost Retro-like air of Cher and Bob Mackie, especially with her long straight hair. I just wished she would have worn no-platform strappy silver heels instead.
Score: 8.85
16. Miss Universe Thailand Sophida Kanchanarin--Sophida brought the house down as she made her entrance to the Miss Universe 2018 Evening Gown Preliminary Competition; after all she was at home in front of thousands of her fellow Thai! She wore this gown by Thailand-based design/brand Milin which featured a gorgeous display of hand-sewn crystals, over a silver iridescent base, a side front slit, scooped neckline and fringed back. While quite simple in its design, it had impact.
Score: 8.80
17. Miss Universe Kenya Wabaiya Kariuki--Wabaiya wore this sheer silver gown designed by Filipino designed Jian Lasala which featured silver sequins and crystals, nude side panels and back chiffon falls. The dress fit her teeny-tiny figure perfectly and made her stage moment a stand-out. If I had any critique...yes, you might have guessed it: THOSE CLUNKY NUDE PLATFORM SHOES! Whyyyyyy???!!!!
Score: 8.50
18. Miss Universe Colombia Valeria Morales--One in a handful of contestants who chose to wear a full ballgown shape was Miss Universe Colombia, Valeria Morales. Valeria wore this lipstick red gown from Colombian designer Alfredo Barraza . The strapless dress took 8 days to make, and features a full satin organza base with hand-sewn flower appliques, delicate flowing peplum and full back train. While it might not have been the most "High Fashion" of styles, the color was striking and I appreciated that the design stood out among a sea of nude golden/silver column dresses.
Score: 8.40
19. Miss Universe Philippines Catriona Gray--Catriona wore a golden design by Filipino designer Mak Tumang . The dress is inspired by the Ibong Adrana, a mythological bird/Phoenix that could change into different guises or characters, regenerating itself amidst a spectacle of flames: A phoenix rising from the ashes, as it were. The design featured feather-like sequined appliques set over a nude-colored tulle/chiffon base, fitted silhouette and front leg opening/slit. The color and bead work were great, but I just wished it wasn't as open in the front (it was too-mucheyyy-open for my taste), and here we go again with those clunky nude platforms!
Score: 8.30
Lastly...
20. Miss Universe Israel Nikol Reznikov--I wanted to add Miss Universe Israel and this very unique interpretation of an "Evening Gown": A Pantsuit! Nikol is here on my Top 20 List because she stood out with this look--the only contestant to wear PANTS (Mon Dieu!) for the Evening Gown Competition. I loved that she went onstage and owned it, every second of it. This Sherri Hill creation featured wide leg pants and a shawl-collar Tuxedo jacket with tails, both of which were detailed with black sequined embellishments. This was UBER chic and ultra modern. Part of me wished it would have been all black a la Yves Saint Laurent Le Smoking with super skinny pants, but this was great nonetheless.
Score: 8.25

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss Universe 2018 NATIONAL COSTUMES SHOW: TOP 20 BEST COSTUMES!
Universal Costumes--(L to R) Miss Universe Laos, Miss Universe El Salvador, Miss Universe Thailand, Miss Universe India--Miss Universe 2018 National Costumes Presentation Show, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Pattaya, Thailand
The 67th annual Miss Universe beauty pageant is happening in Thailand. I previously blogged about the National Costumes which you can see/read HERE , giving a "Sneak Peak" of what some of the contestants would be wearing for the international beauty pageant. Earlier this week pageant fans from all over the world found out what ALL 94 contestants are actually wearing as their National Costumes: The "Miss Universe 2018" National Costumes Show was held in Pattaya Thailand showcasing all the National Costumes and giving a taste of the style, fashion and national identity that makes this pageant a fabulous and unique event.
Out of the 94 National Costumes, here are my TOP 20 BEST:
1. Miss Universe El Salvador Marisela de Montecristo--Designed by Erick Bendana, the National Costume worn by Miss Universe El Salvador is a SUPERB STANDOUT of Pre-Columbian Central American Fabulousness! The design is inspired by the Festival of Panchimalco, a pre-Columbian festival with more than 500 years of history. In this town one can find the Santa Cruz de Roma Church, one of the oldest colonial temples in Central America. The costume features a silver sequined nude illusion bodysuit, gorgeous mask and over-the-top beautiful ivory peacock feathered "wings". It is impressive, beautiful and deserved of the BEST NATIONAL COSTUME of this year's Miss Universe--Miss Universe 2018 National Costumes Presentation Show, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Pattaya, Thailand
2. Miss Universe Laos On-anong Homsombath--Miss Universe Laos walked onstage during the Miss Universe 2018 National Costumes Show wearing this stunning gold ensemble inspired by a half-human, half-bird from Laos folklore. She literally manipulated golden figures in front and behind her....all as part of her National Costume: INCREDIBLE an I had to put her as my No. 2 Best National Costume of the 2018 Miss Universe!--Miss Universe 2018 National Costumes Presentation Show, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Pattaya, Thailand
3. Miss Universe Puerto Rico Kiara Liz Ortega--Kiara Liz Otiga showed off her National Costume for the island U.S. territory of Puerto Rico entitled "Puerto Rican Reborn". Designed by Joshuan Aponte , the costume was inspired by Hurricane Maria. This "Fashion Hurricane" was made with multiple layers of different types of materials in transparent and metal finishes, including a layer of smart LED lights to represent the wind gusts movement. The Puerto Rican flag is shown in gems and crystals emanating from the eye of the hurricane. A combination of hands, all in different colors to represent the diversity of people in Puerto Rico while the rubies emanating from red hands represents the blood of more than 3,000 lives that were lost. White hands shower a rainfall of silver crystals that represent the tears of the village and in the diaspora. This costume wants to show that Puerto Rico is rising again and a metaphor of light that illuminates the path of queens and all women who decide to lift the homeland--Miss Universe 2018 National Costumes Presentation Show, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Pattaya, Thailand
4. Miss Universe Thailand Sophida Kanchanarin--Entitled “Chang the Icon of Siam”, this elegant costume was designed by Tee Phasux. The 20-kilogram costume was decorated with Swarovski crystals and is a combination of Thai dress and technology using hydraulics to transform the dress into an elephant, hence the name “Chang the Icon of Siam”. The gorgeous ensemble also features ivory colored silk-wool double-layered torso/neckline details, intricate gold and pearl sequin embroidery, crown and back cape/flaps--Miss Universe 2018 National Costumes Presentation Show, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Pattaya, Thailand
5. Miss Universe India Nehal Chudasama--Nehal chose to dress up like Bollywood actress Rani Rudrama Devi in the Telugu film "The Warrior Queen" (above photo) for her National Costume. Designed by Neeta Lulla and Melvyn Dominic Noronha, the costume weighs 105 pounds and includes her own throne (therefore the weight!), an embellished leather bustier, sequined purple "Harem" pants and a golden crown. It represents a warrior princess symbolizing women empowerment and diversity--Miss Universe 2018 National Costumes Presentation Show, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Pattaya, Thailand
6. Miss Universe Guatemala Mariana Garcia--This fabulous bird-like costume is entitled "Princess of Kaminal Juyu" and is the national costume of Miss Universe Guatemala. The Archaeological site, Kaminal Juyu, was the most important pre-Hispanic regional capital of the central highlands of Guatemala. The ruins covered more than 200 mounds that spread in an area of 5 kilometers, including 13 ball games, scattered in this area around the lagoon of miraflores, today extinct in a warm, flat and fertile plateau, with abundant rivers surrounded by green mountains. The white and black colors of the costume represent the cyclic movements of the moon of the Mayan calendar; the red represents the purity of the Mayan princesses, and the green shows the splendor of the architecture and science of the great Mayan civilization. It was designed by Toni Berganza and Cesar Castro--Miss Universe 2018 National Costumes Presentation Show, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Pattaya, Thailand
7. Miss Universe Ecuador Virginia Limongi--Entitled "Ecuadorian Amazon", this vibrant costume was designed by Wenceslao Munos. The costume features a colorful sequined and feathered bird-like design with exaggerated wings, festive headdress and shoes and made quite an impact at the Miss Universe 2018 National Costume Show--Miss Universe 2018 National Costumes Presentation Show, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Pattaya, Thailand
8. Miss Universe Canada Marta Stepien--Entitled "Queen of the Maple Leaf", this costume is inspired by the Canadian flag and the historical significance that the maple leaf has for the country. It featured a stunning display of gold-leaf, oversized sequins, maple leaves and Pre-Columbian design--Miss Universe 2018 National Costumes Presentation Show, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Pattaya, Thailand
9. Miss Universe Curacao Akisha Albert--"Standing as one, representing thousands and thousands of powerful, free, educated and empowered women" is how Akisha describes her National Costume which features a gorgeous multi-tiered Caribbean Diva of a gown with stunning multilayered necklaces, turban and arm-sleeves. She looked like the most DIVINE of an Island Voodoo Goddess--Miss Universe 2018 National Costumes Presentation Show, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Pattaya, Thailand
10. Miss Universe Kazakhstan Sabina Azembayeva--This stunning costume took months to make, featuring a gold fashion ensemble including a jumpsuit and overskirt, boots and crown. It also has one of the BEST feathered wings in the pageant! The overall costume is full of symbolism with the gold color representing the wealth of the country and the wings, the nation's independence and freedom--Miss Universe 2018 National Costumes Presentation Show, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Pattaya, Thailand
11. Miss Universe Panama Rosa Montezuma--The name behind this grand design for Miss Universe Panama is "Zarati, The Rebirth of Two Legends ". The costume features a tan-colored mesh base, to simulate Princess Zara under the gold of the sun's rays, which is made of more than 3,500 golden beads with small iridescent crystals and sheets of silver acetates, matching a bib, cuff links and anklets. The design was done by Abdul Juliao . The headdress and gear are inspired by the symbol of the eagle in the pre-Columbian era. The silver crown that is part of the headdress is plated in 18K gold and made by the hands of the goldsmiths Mila Jewelry--Miss Universe 2018 National Costumes Presentation Show, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Pattaya, Thailand
12. Miss Universe Peru Romina Lozano--While growing up in the Amazonian jungle area of Peru, she was brought up listening to a lot of stories and legends. Romina decided to showcase one of these legends through her costume of a siren that turns into a woman to seduce everyone. The costume was very creative and went from one look to another...and then another throughout the presentation (Scroll to the end of this BLOG to watch the Miss Universe 2018 National Costume Show on YouTube). The costume was designed by Beto Pinedo--Miss Universe 2018 National Costumes Presentation Show, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Pattaya, Thailand
13. Miss Universe Philippines Catriona Gray--Catriona showcased her National Costume in this interesting design. Gray was carrying the island groups of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao on her shoulders, literally and figuratively. She showcased the lantern on her back, inspired by Pampanga artisans, despite it failing to light up at the last minute. Her headpiece and accessories are an ode to the tribes of the South while her body suit featured authentic tattoo designs by the Pintados. While I thought it was an impacting costume design, it lacked the stage effect that I am sure she--or the designer Jearson Demavivas--intended--Miss Universe 2018 National Costumes Presentation Show, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Pattaya, Thailand
14. Miss Universe Vietnam H'Hen Nie--Miss Universe Vietnam wore a Bahn Mi Vietnamese Baguette Sandwich as her Miss Universe National Costume. The costume features a basket of the iconic Vietnamese Baguette Sandwich, as if a street vendor was selling it. The look also featured a straw cone-shaped hat, boots and necklace. It was unique, creative and in its own way, fashionable--Miss Universe 2018 National Costumes Presentation Show, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Pattaya, Thailand
15. Miss Universe Japan Yuumi Kato--Miss Universe Japan's National Costume for Miss Universe involved a Samurai Fashion Diva-turns-into-Sailor Moon look. The design first starts as a sexy Samurai with a mini Kimono and thigh-high stiletto boots, and then flips into the iconic "Sailor Moon" Japanese anime costume. You cannot make this stuff up! Don't miss it at the end of this BLOG in the Miss Universe 2018 National Costume Show YouTube Video--Miss Universe 2018 National Costumes Presentation Show, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Pattaya, Thailand
16. Miss Universe Brazil Mayra Dias--Created by the artists of Parintins and designed by Helerson da Maia , the main designer for the festival costumes of the Boi de Paritins, this costume represents a tribute to the indigenous ethnic minorities of the South American nation. It is the representation of an Indigenous person who carries in them the paintings and plumage of all the Brazilian ethnic groups...it was quite an effective "Native" costume for this beautiful South American contestant--Miss Universe 2018 National Costumes Presentation Show, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Pattaya, Thailand
17. Miss Universe China Meisu Qin--This innovative costume from Miss Universe China was inspired by two significant Chinese dramas: The Northern Peking Opera and the Southern Sichuan Opera--both of which show strong female characters--emotional as well as artistic qualities--Miss Universe 2018 National Costumes Presentation Show, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Pattaya, Thailand
18. Miss Universe Venezuela Sthefany Gutierrez--Miss Universe Venezuela wore her national costume entitled “Guaichia: Protector Queen of Nature" this week at the Miss Universe National Costume Show. The costume, designed by Voyage, featured more than 140,000 golden Swarovski crystals and was inspired by the Venezuelan Amazon. The ensemble is complemented by a crown created by Sinparjoyas and an anaconda created by Jason Galarraga and was quite exotic in its design and interpretation--Miss Universe 2018 National Costumes Presentation Show, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Pattaya, Thailand
19. Miss Universe Indonesia Sonia Fergina Citra--Sonia wore this Indonesia National Costume entitled "The Bird of Paradise". Designed and created by Jember Fashion Carnaval , the look features gorgeous white and canary yellow feathers, silver sequins, ivory tulle, burgundy bead work and...birds that "come alive" in the back (Watch the video at the end of this BLOG to see!)--Miss Universe 2018 National Costumes Presentation Show, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Pattaya, Thailand
Lastly...
20. Miss Universe Nepal Manita Devkota--Miss Universe Nepal's blue-silver costume represents the Goddess Avalokitesvara who observes or gazes down at the world to relieve the suffering of others, protect people from danger, and grant blessings to the children--Miss Universe 2018 National Costumes Presentation Show, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Pattaya, Thailand

Now it's time to discuss THE EVENING GOWNS!!!
Sequin Divas--(L to R) Miss World Thailand Nicolene Limsnukan, Miss world Uganda Quiin Abenakyo, Miss World Mexico Vanessa Ponce de Leon, Miss World 2014 Stephanie Del Valle, Miss World 2016 Megan Young--Miss World 2018 Finals, Sanya China
First, let's begin with some of the former Miss World's and presenters of Saturday's show:
Megan Young Miss World 2014--It's always a good bet that former Miss World's look much more fabulous than some of the current year's contestants. There are many reasons for this but mainly: They have a stylist and designers who want to lend them gowns---very high quality ones! And this year was no exception. Megan Young, from the Philippines co-presented the Miss World 2018 Finals and looked beautiful in two gowns--a golden sequined ballgown from Andrea Tetangco (L) and a silver crystal column from Mark Bumgarner . She looked DIVINE.
Miss World 2017 Manushi Chhillar--India's Manushi Chhillar who was giving up her Miss World crown wore this black ensemble gown from Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukcherjee . She described the look as "Indian-meets-Victorian" and that pretty much summed it up! The look featured a black sequined bra-top, full ballgown skirt and sari-like wrap. I thought she looked sexy, elegant and had a "WOW" of a stage presence.
Miss World 2016 Stephanie Del Valle--My top favorite look from the former Miss World's was this gorgeous design worn by Puerto Rico's Stephanie Del Valle, Miss World 2016. When she was onstage in this violet sequined-and-nude-netting gown, I gasped "Oh No She Didn't!". She did. The gown was designed and created by Carlos Alberto and was EVERYTHING, darling. Muy Bien.
Time for the Finalists' Gowns:
Top Five--(L to R) Miss World Thailand Nicolene Pichapa Limsnukan, Miss World Uganda Quiin Abenakyo, Miss World Mexico Vanessa Ponce De Leon, Miss World Jamaica Kadijah Robinson,
Miss World Belarus Maria Vasilevich--Miss World 2018 Finals, Sanya China
My Favorites were:
1. Miss World Mexico Vanessa Ponce De Leon--Vanessa wore this off the shoulder blush/ivory sequined gown and it made her look like a WINNING QUEEN! The design featured a column gown with a full back overskirt and fitted top section with v-neckline. I loved everything about it and especially, that she wore the right nude heels (not some tacky "Stripper Platform" ones).
Score: 9.65
2. Miss World Uganda Quiin Abenakyo--Quiin looked like a Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week runway model in this silver and red sequined gown. I thought this was a daring choice (I can just hear those people on the web thinking "OMG! She looks like a Christmas Gift!). Forget those people: I admire daring and admire this design, which featured a one shoulder strap, fitted bustier, full skirt with side drape details. I also loved the bias-cut stripes that added dimension and interest in the gown. She looked very high fashion chic!
Score: 9.50
3. Miss World Thailand Nicolene Pichapa Limsnukan--Next on my Top Five Best Miss World 2018 gown is this sequined-and-feathered look worn by Miss World Thailand. While this may be a hot minute from being a little too Figure Skating Queen-meets-Showgirl...it was still pretty stage impacting and fit her beautifully. I admired the crystals vs. nude panel design and had all the makings of "I am here to WIN!". This is a gown that was somewhat wasted at the Miss World stage, and should have been saved for the sexy va-va-voom Miss Universe.
Score: 9.25
4. Miss World Panama Solaris Barba--Solaris eventually got the Miss World Americas title after Miss World Mexico won Miss World. She wore this baby blue ballgown for the Finals and looked very nice. I liked the sweetness factor and how well it fit her. The delicate sequin applique on the gown added a luxe element to an otherwise simple silhouette.
Score: 9.10
5. Miss World Belarus Maria Vasilevich--Miss World Belarus wore this emerald green gown at the Miss World 2018 Finals. While one could also say this was a bit "Christmas-y" in its design and color, I thought she looked quite pretty. The color suited her and the design was sweet, pretty and safe and fit well (look how PERFECTLY TO THE FLOOR it is in the above photo!). The dress featured sequined panels juxtaposed with emerald green organza as well as a nude illusion neckline.
Score: 8.90
6. Miss World Jamaica Kadijah Robinson--Kadijah wore this royal blue fit-and-flare gown which garnered my last spot in Top Six Gowns of the Miss World 2018 Finals. I though it fit her exquisitely and the color worked well onstage and against her skin. It was simple and classic "beauty pageant"; as if she ordered it from a Pageant Gown Website. There was nothing wrong with it, except for my fashionista taste, I would have wanted something more exciting...and fashion-forward.
Score: 8.25

MUSEUM BLOG.....FIT Museum "Pink: The History of a Punk, Pretty, Powerful Color" Exhibition BLOG RECAP
Pink Exhibition--Nick Verreos at the "Pink: The History of a Punk, Pretty, Powerful Color" Exhibition, FIT Museum, NYC
Several weeks back, while spending time on a project in NY, I had the opportunity to check out a wonderful fashion exhibition at FIT. I was excited to get a chance to visit the "Pink: The History of a Punk, Pretty, Powerful Color" fashion exhibition. The extensive exhibition features approximately 80 ensembles from the 18th century to the present, with examples by designers and brands such as Elsa Schiaparelli, Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Alessandro Michele of Gucci, Jeremy Scott of Moschino, and Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons. "Pink" opened on September 7, 2018 and runs until January 5, 2019 and it is FREE...

Atmosphere at the "Pink: The History of a Punk, Pretty, Powerful Color" Exhibition FIT Museum
The exhibition is divided into two sections. The first gallery focuses primarily on the theme “Pretty in Pink” with approximately 35 examples of traditionally “feminine” pink clothes organized chronologically from the mid-19th century through the 20th century.
1857 two-piece silk taffeta dress and man's suit--"Pink: The History of a Punk, Pretty, Powerful Color" Exhibition FIT Museum
It begins by juxtaposing an 1857 bright pink crinoline dress with a black 1860 man’s suit, illustrating the feminization of color in the 19th century. Subsequent dresses demonstrate how different shades of pink came in and out of fashion, evoking different ideas about femininity...

Around 1900, for example, pale pinks implied delicate, aristocratic femininity, while by 1912 a vibrant cherry pink indicated a more exotic image. The 1920s, famous for the Little Black Dress, actually saw a rise in popularity for a range of pinks, crowned by Schiaparelli’s aptly named Shocking Pink of the late 1930s...

18th Century Robe a la Francaise Dress--"Pink: The History of a Punk, Pretty, Powerful Color" Exhibition FIT Museum
In contrast to the chronological layout of the introductory gallery, the main gallery is organized thematically to highlight key concepts in the history of pink. The first section, “Pompadour Pink,” features several 18th-century ensembles, including a woman’s pink robe à la française (photo above) a man’s pink habit à la française, and a man’s pink banyan...

The 1950s are notorious as the era of the “feminine mystique” when gender stereotyping was reinforced throughout society. The 1960s continued to witness the popularity of many “pretty in pink” dresses, such as a 1960 cocktail dress by Yves Saint Laurent for Christian Dior (photo above)...

SASHES AND TIARAS.....Miss Universe 2018: National Costumes PREVIEW: Photos!
Universal Costumes--(L to R) Miss Universe Cambodia Nat Rern, Miss Universe Japan Yuumi Kato, Miss Universe Thailand Sophida Kanchanarin, Miss Universe Vietnam H'Hen Nie
The 67th Miss Universe beauty pageant is taking place in Bangkok Thailand on December 17th. Ninety-five contestants from all over the world are competing for the coveted beauty crown. In advance of the finals, their National Costumes are always one of the favorite things fans look forward to seeing. Some of the contestants have been showing off what they will be wearing. Here is a "Sneak Peak"...Let's start with the contestants from...
LATIN AMERICA:
Las Latinas--(L to R) Miss Universe Puerto Rico Kiara Ortiga, Miss Universe Venezuela Sthefany Gutierrez, Miss Universe Guatemala Mariana Garcia, Miss Universe Ecuador Virginia Limongi
Miss Universe Brazil Mayra Dias--Created by the artists of Parintins and designed by Helerson da Maia , the main designer for the festival costumes of the Boi de Paritins, it represents a tribute to the indigenous ethnic minorities of the South American nation. The costume is the representation of an Indigenous person who carries in them, the paintings, plumage of all the Brazilian ethnic groups.
Miss Universe Puerto Rico Kiara Liz Ortega--Kiara Liz Otiga showed off her National Costume for the island U.S. territory of Puerto Rico entitled "Puerto Rican Reborn". Designed by Joshuan Aponte , the inspiration of the dress takes as a starting point the strength and impetus of the Puerto Rican spirit to adversity and particularly, Hurricane Maria as an element to demonstrate the strength of its people. This "Fashion Hurricane" was made with multiple layers of different types of materials in transparent and metal finishes, including a layer of smart LED lights to represent the wind gusts movement. One can appreciate the Puerto Rican flag in gems and crystals emanating from the eye of the hurricane suggesting the lift of the island. A combination of hands, all in different colors to represent the diversity of people in Puerto Rico. The rain of rubies that emanates from red hands represents the blood of more than 3,000 lives that were lost. White hands shower a rainfall of silver crystals that represent the tears of the village and in the diaspora. In essence, this national costume wants to represent that Puerto Rico is rising again and a metaphor of light that illuminates the path of queens and all women who decide to lift the homeland.
Miss Universe Panama Rosa Montezuma--The name behind this grand design for Miss Universe Panama is "Zarati, The Rebirth of Two Legends ". The costume features a tan-colored mesh base, to simulate Princess Zara under the gold of the sun's rays, which is made of more than 3,500 golden beads with small crystals iridescent and sheets of silver acetates, matching a bib, cuff links and anklets. The design was done by Abdul Juliao . The headdress and gear are inspired by the symbol of the eagle in the pre-Columbian era. The silver crown that is part of the headdress is plated in 18K gold and made by the hands of the goldsmiths Mila Jewelry.
Miss Universe Ecuador Virginia Limongi--Entitled "Ecuadorian Amazon", this vibrant costume was designed by Wenceslao Munos , the winner of the Best National Costume by The Municipality of Guayaquil Tourism. The costume features a colorful sequined and feathered bird-like design with exaggerated wings, festive headdress and shoes.
Miss Universe Guatemala Mariana Garcia--This fabulous bird-like costume is entitled "Princess of Kaminal Juyu" and is the national costume Miss Universe Guatemala will wear for the upcoming Miss Universe 2018 beauty pageant. It was designed by Toni Berganza and Cesar Castro.
Miss Universe Venezuela Sthefany Gutierrez--Miss Universe Venezuela revealed her national costume entitled “Guaichia: Protector Queen of Nature". The costume, designed by Voyage, features more than 140,000 golden Swarovski crystals and was inspired by the Venezuelan Amazon. The ensemble is complemented by a crown created by Sinparjoyas and an anaconda created by Jason Galarraga.
AFRICA:
Miss Universe Namibia Selma Kamaya--Diamonds are a girl’s best friend...so the saying goes...and for Miss Universe Namibia, they are her inspiration. Kamaya said her national costume for Miss Universe is inspired by Namibia’s Crown Jewel, its rare gem quality diamonds. The costume represents the essence of Namibia, which is renowned for its magnificent diamonds, embodying the proud spirit of Namibia and her beautiful people. Namibian designer, Cobus Moller designed the costume and said that the costume reflects the magnificently diverse Namibian landscape where the oldest desert in the world meets the Atlantic ocean and of course, its diamonds. “The bodysuit is ablaze with faux diamonds holding an intricately worked wing representing one extremely large diamond which will sparkle continually on stage and a diamond headset to complete the look,” he explained.
Miss Universe South Africa Tamaryn Green--Miss Universe South Africa Tamaryn Green revealed her Miss Universe National Costume at her farewell event. It was designed by Malikah Hajee and Lloyd Kandlin and their team at The Costume Department. Hajee explains that The Costume Department took inspiration for the show-stopping national costume from South Africa’s national bird, the blue crane: “More than 1000 bluish grey and black feathers have been hand placed on the costume and resemble under wing feathers. The headpiece is encrusted with crystals depicting the beak. The custom feather print fabric is designed locally. The structured, tailored jacket is reflective of the esteem that blue crane feathers are held in within some African cultures such as Xhosa, Zulu and Ndebele. Chiefs were bestowed with the honor of wearing blue crane feathers for their acts of bravery and hunting prowess.”
ASIA & OCEANIA:
Miss Universe Korea Ji Hyun Baek--Miss Universe Korea gave a hint of her national costume, which looks like a pink-and-gold silk Hanbok ensemble with a fabulous braided headdress.
Miss Universe Australia Francesca Hung--Miss Universe Australia Francesca Hung will showcase the country on the world stage in a national gown inspired by golden wattle, the national flower of Australia. The Chinese-Australian model's national costume was designed by Nicola Yeung . It features 20 meters of silk, descends into a giant wattle-shaped skirt, with each petal individually hand dyed to bring the floral to life. Francesca said that "This wattle gown signifies the unity and resilience of the Australian people. I am beyond proud to be wearing such an incredible national costume".
Miss Universe Cambodia Nat Rern--Miss Universe Cambodia's national costume, entitled "The Kingdom of Wonder", is a collection of images and symbols representing Cambodia’s rich history, unique culture and other features that makes the country a truly great nation. Designed by Cambodian fashion brand, Madam Boutiques Amy , the National Costume represents the many fascinating features of Cambodian culture and history. The design of the dress is said to have been based on the style prevalent during the 15th-18th century. The dress is complemented with a skirt made of Khmer silk and was popularly worn by the first women of Khmer civilization. As for its unique features, the most apparent is the attachable backdrop designed in the form of Cambodia’s official flag. The back portion is adorned with designs based on the mysterious smiling faces of the Bayon temple and Romduol, which is Cambodia’s national flower.
Miss Universe Singapore Zahra Khanum--The historic North Korea-United States summit meeting, the first-ever between the two countries, was the inspiration for this year's Miss Universe Singapore national costume. The costume consists of 3 meters-long white dove wings, a peace symbol incorporated into the bodice and an electric blue skirt emblazoned with a digital print of a handshake--one arm features the North Korean flag and the other, the American flag--over the Singapore skyline. Moe Kasim , Creative Director of Moephosis Concepts, designed the costume, wanting to showcase world peace. The look took three months to make.
Miss Universe Vietnam H'Hen Nie--Miss Universe Vietnam will be wearing a Bahn Mi Vietnamese Baguette Sandwich- as her Miss Universe National Costume. The costume features a basket of the iconic Vietnamese Baguette Sandwich, as if a street vendor was selling it. The look also features a straw cone-shaped hat and necklace.
Miss Universe Japan Yuumi Kato--Miss Universe Japan's National Costume for Miss Universe will involve a Samurai Fashion Diva-turns-into-Sailor Moon. Naturally. The look first starts as a sexy Samurai with a mini Kimono and thigh-high stiletto boots, and then flips into the iconic "Sailor Moon" Japanese anime costume.
Miss Universe Malaysia Jane Teoh--Jane Teoh's national costume for Miss Universe is inspired by the Bangau Perahu, designed by Salleh Hamid . The outfit, which took six months to complete, features prime elements of the Malaysian culture. The design is inspired by the boat’s crane, most commonly seen on fishing boats of the East Coast and is adorned with a bangau on the right shoulder and okok on the left. The warrior-like attire also spotlights a corset made to look like an armor, as well as 3D shield-like structure resembling the front of the boat. The final look is then complemented with royal blue, custom-made boots designed by Rhea Tan.
Miss Universe Thailand Sophida Kanchanarin--Entitled “Chang the Icon of Siam”, this elegant costume was designed by Tee Phasux who won the national costume contest this year.
The designer unveiled the 20-kilogram costume decorated with Swarovski crystals. The costume is a combination of Thai dress and technology using hydraulics to transform the dress into an elephant, hence the name “Chang the Icon of Siam”. The gorgeous ensemble also features ivory colored silk-wool double-layered torso/neckline details, intricate gold and pearl sequin embroidery, crown and back cape/flaps.

World Costumes--Miss World 2018 contestants show off their "Dances of the World" National Costumes (L to R) Miss World Philippines Katarina Rodriguez, Miss World Venezuela Veruska Ljubisavljevic, Miss World Trinidad and Tobago Ysabel Visnath, Miss World Nicaragua Yoselin Sobeyda Gomez

The 68th edition of the world's biggest international beauty pageant-- Miss World --is taking place in Sanya China with the finals taking place on December 8th. 120 contestants (120!) have been in China gearing up for the Finals doing various pre-Finals events, activities and actual competitions. One of the many events that they participate in is the "Dances of the World", where contestants get to show off traditional dances from their respective nations and as a bonus, they get to wear a costume for it.
European Costumed Beauties--(L to R) Miss World Spain Amaia Izar Leache, Miss World Germany Christine Keller, Miss World Latvia Daniela Gods-Romanovska, Miss World Iceland Erla Olafsdottir and Miss World Portugal Carla Rodrigues
Miss World 2018 contestants in their "Dances of the World" costumes including Miss World Croatia (far left), Miss World Gibraltar (3rd, from left), Miss World Portugal (3rd from right), Miss World Northern Ireland (2nd from right) and Miss World Spain (far right), among others
Caribbean Ladies--Miss World Martinique Larissa Segarel, Miss Word Haiti Stephie Morency, Miss World Dominican Republic Denise Romero--Miss World 2018 "Dances of the World", Sanya China
Since the Miss World pageant did away with their "National Costumes" portion many years ago, this has become a replacement of sorts--for those pageant fans that love this part of international beauty pageants (myself included!).
Here are some of my FAVORITES from looking at some of the photos of the contestants:
Miss World Nicaragua Yoselin Sobeyda Gomez--One of my favorite costumes at this year's Miss World is this blue sequined design from Miss World Nicaragua. I loved the impacting colors which transform her into a Marine Mermaid Pre-Columbian Carnival Diva! It was designed by Carlos Nicaragua and whoever sewed on all of those paillettes and sequins should get an award just for that!
Miss World Trinidad and Tobago Ysabel Bisnath--Entitled “Celebration of Our People", this design is a standout among the National Costumes from the Miss World 2018 "Dances of the World". Designed and executed by head designer, Franklyn Jagdeo Of Hott Stuff Promotions, along with Rickey Sookdeo and Tara Rampersad, the costume features the multicultural heritage of the Caribbean nation with its East Indian, Afro-Caribbean influences. I love everything about it, including the Indian midriff top, headdress, sari-like inspiration plus the tiered ruffle skirt ever-present in the Caribbean Island's traditional dresses. This was literally EVERYTHING!
Miss World Philippines Katarina Rodriguez--This costume was inspired by the Kalinga Warrior. Designed by Francis Libiran , it featured a fully embroidered and sequined body suit accessorized with a custom-made headdress with feathers featuring the iconic "bongol"--the native beads to show the social status of the Kalinga woman. This national costume also pays homage to Whang-od, the last surviving original, from Kalinga's Butbut tribe. The costume is fashionable and tribal-fab!
Miss World Venezuela Veruska Ljubisavljevic--Veruska wore this costume, created and designed by Wilfredo Camacho , depicting the traditional Venezuelan national dress and the dance including flora and fauna, and everything in between! This colorful and very festive national costume said "Viva Venezuela"!
Miss World Mongolia Erdenebaatar Enkhriimaa--I loved this costume for the colors, dramatic headdress and overall beauty. The blue, orange, green and red colors as well as traditional Mongolian textile prints, sequin details, texture, beauty and overall strong National costume impact.
Miss World Mexico Vanessa Ponce--As National Costume "basic" as this look is, it is still so fabulous! I LOVE a traditional Charro look--the horseman--or vaquero--outfit that the Mexican Charros wear. The entire outfit is so perfecto!
Miss World Korea Bo Ah Cho--Korea's contestants always wear gorgeous costumes and this one worn by Miss World Korea's 2018 beauty is no exception. It is exceptional in its design, stage impact and blends both traditional with high style.
Miss World El Salvador Metzi Solano--I adored this outstanding costume worn by Miss World El Salvador. I thought the colors, fabrics (the gold trim, white laces), multi-tiered skirt and that STUNNING Virgin-like head wrap with orchid "crown" were all gorgeous. This was an exceptional example of a national costume! Muy lindo.
Miss World Spain Amaia Izar--It is not a shock that Miss World Spain would feature a Spanish Flamenco dress as her "Dances of the World" costume. I love these dresses and think they are iconic, fabulous and very stylish. This red ruffled design was a great example of a wonderful "Sevillana". All I want to do is get a couple of castanets and start flamenco dancing with her!
Miss World Russia Natalya Stroeva--Natalya is the first Russian beauty queen of Asian heritage to represent her nation at Miss World. She is wearing a traditional costume from the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) in Russia which she was the representative of for her national pageant. The costume featured intricate bead work, shimmering colors, a stunning headdress and fur sleeves. It all added up to one of my favorites from Miss World 2018 "Dances of the World" National Costumes.

The 58th Annual Miss International was held earlier this month in Tokyo Japan and I discussed my TOP TEN BEST PICKS of the National Costumes HERE so now it's time to RECAP my Top PICKS for Evening Gowns! But first, let's discuss the winner...beating out 76 other contestants from around the world, Venezuela's Mariem Velazco won the top crown. The 1.77 M (5' 10") tall, 20 years old model hails from the state of Anzoategui in Venezuela.
Queen and Her Court-- Miss International 2018, Venezuela's Mariem Velazco (Center) flanked by her Runners-up (L to R) 2nd Runner-up Miss South Africa International Reabetswe Sechoaro, 4th Runner-up Miss Colombia International Anabella Castro, 1st runner-up Miss Philippines International Maria Ahtisa Manalo, and 3rd Runner-up Miss Romania International Bianca Tirsin--Miss International 2018 Finals, Tokyo Japan
Mariem represented the state of Barinas last year at the Miss Venezuela 2017 pageant where she got the title of Miss Venezuela International. Her victory in becoming Miss International 2018 gave her country the EIGHTH crown for that country, becoming the most ever for a single nation in the history of the pageant.
Mariem Velazco, Miss Venezuela International, and newly crowned Miss International 2018
Now, time to discuss the EVENING GOWNS! Ivory and gold were popular "colors" among the Evening Gowns seen at the Miss International 2018 Finals--as well as sequined gowns--and for some reason in my TOP TEN , they almost ALL were within that range, save for one. Let's get to it:
The Top Ivory Gowns--Contestants from (Top Photo, above) Thailand, Mexico, Venezuela, and Colombia; (Lower Photo, above) Indonesia, Guatemala, Philippines, and Egypt--Miss International 2018 Finals, Tokyo Japan
Here are my TOP TEN BEST Evening Gowns of the Miss International 2018 Finals, beginning with my No. 1 Gown Pick, which coincidentally happened to be THE WINNER:
1. Miss Venezuela International Mariem Velazco--Many times my No. 1 choice for Best Evening Gown isn't worn by the beauty who got the top crown but in this case, it is: I absolutely loved the white pearl-sequined gown worn by Venezuela's Mariem Velazco. The gorgeous dress, designed by Venezuelan designer Alejandro Fajardo (who incidentally also created her national costume), was THE PERFECT pageant gown for someone to win....and she did! The gown featured a perfectly fitting fit-to-flare silhouette with sweeping train, a plunging sweetheart neckline with see-through illusion...
...a center front slit to show leg, and "open back" covered in see-through illusion. It was PERFECTION, even down to the matching shoes. This could easily also be the most gorgeous wedding gown. Add a veil and a bouquet and Done & Done! Fabulous.
Score: 9.99
2. Miss Colombia International Anabella Castro Sierra--My second favorite gown of the Miss International 2018 Finals was this one worn by Miss Colombia International. The ivory sequined dress was created by legendary Colombian designer Alfredo Barraza. This design was simply beautiful in the way it fit her, how she wore it, the asymmetrical neckline details as well as the silver appliques that adorned the upper torso. It was chic, elegant and pure gown perfection.
Score: 9.97
3. Miss Mexico International Nebai Torres--Nebai won the title of "Best Dresser" and with her evening gown choice, she proved why. Miss Mexico International also wore an ivory colored sequined gown, this one featuring heavily beaded lace, a fit-and-flare shape and dramatic back cape. She was giving you lots of Gown Drama, but in a sweet Miss International way (the Japanese-based beauty pageant loves its winners and contestants to be--let's just say--"sweeter". Not your typical va-va-voom pageant style. This design achieved all of that...and more!
Score: 9.70
4. Miss Thailand International Keeratiga Jaruratjamon--Miss Thailand International wore my 4th favorite gown in this ivory sequined column design. The dress fit her beautifully and was stage impacting with its elegant pleated chiffon cape.
Score: 9.55
5. Miss Philippines International Maria Ahtisa Manalo--Maria Ahtisa Manalo, Miss Philippines International made my Top Five wearing a couture Michael Cinco fully beaded blush pink gown with exquisite crystal details in delicate tulle with feathers from the designer's "Impalpable Dream of The ROYALS" Spring-Summer 2019 Collection. The gown was beautifully made--it's Michael Cinco after all!--and showcased the designer's trademark sequin workmanship from his Dubai-based atelier. Simply gorgeous, and staying true to the "Miss International Sweet" vibe.
Score: 9.40
6. Miss Egypt International Farah Sedky--OH MY GOD...it's NOT IVORY! OK, kind of, but mostly gold...and ivory! This golden sequined-and-sheer gown worn by Egypt's Farah Sedky, made my No. 6 spot. The dress had a fit-and-flare "Mermaid Lite" shape, fit her beautifully and featured long sleeves, a v-neckline and very full back cape. It was dramatic, stage-impacting and looked expensive!
Score: 9.20
7. Miss Guatemala International Gabriela Castillo--I really liked Miss Guatemala International's choice of gown for the Miss International 2018 Finals. This was another ivory sequined gown and looked gorgeous on her. I loved the no-slit silhouette and chiffon capelet-like sleeve detail. I especially liked the original neckline. Muy bien Guatemala!
Score: 9.10
8. Miss Panama International Shirel Ortiz--Panama's Shirel Ortiz wore this ivory sequined gown which made the No. 8 spot in my Top Ten of Miss International 2018 Evening Gowns. I liked the tasteful silhouette, perfect length, beautiful bead work and stand-up collar detail. She looked super elegant and regal.
Score: 9.00
9. Miss Indonesia International Vania Fitryanti Herlambang--I placed Indonesia's contestant here at No. 9 with this original-looking gown. The silver iridescent organza design had delicate black leaf and flower appliques, a dramatic folded-and-draped front top section and perfectly fitting fit-and-flare silhouette. I wished her hair would have looked a bit more modern and I could have done without those whispies but...the gown was very nice!
Score: 8.75
Lastly in my Top Ten:
10. Miss South Africa International Reabetswe Sechoaro--I had to add a non-ivory gown in my Top Ten, just because! Miss South Africa International had the best non-ivory one in the entire group of 77 contestants. I thought the gown fit her beautifully and I especially liked the rich-looking sequin-and-lace embroidery work in the upper torso.
Score: 8.50
Congratulations...
And Felicitaciones to Mariem Velazco of Venezuela for being crowned Miss International 2018, the EIGHTH Miss International for that economically ravaged South American nation that I grew up in a long time ago. It's time they received little bit of good news!

Earlier this month the 2018 Miss International Beauty Pageant took place in Tokyo Japan, I'll discuss the Evening gowns and the Finals in a later post, but first it's time to discuss my TOP TEN picks for BEST NATIONAL COSTUMES!
1. Miss Vietnam International Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien--This was my No. 1 Choice for Best National Costume at the Miss International 2018 Beauty Pageant. I loved the Haute Couture take on the traditional Vietnamese Ao Dai; this one was simply outstanding! The dress itself was fitted to perfection and featured golden flower appliques rising from the hem. The same gold embroidery was then seen in a stunning hand painted cape depicting Vietnamese countryside scenes. And if all of that wasn't enough, the entire look was finished off with a gorgeous straw and crystal headdress/hat. Kudos to the designer for a fabulous National Costume!
Score: 9.90
2. Miss Ecuador International Michelle Huet--Miss Ecuador actually took home the prize for Best National Costume at this year's Miss International and for me, it came in at No. 2. I thought this was an impacting and creative take on the Pre-Columbian costumes, normally featuring tons of feathers, a skimpy maillot/leotard and lots of crystals. Here we did have some of that, but in addition, there were beautiful depictions of Ecuadorian life and culture--from the indigenous to the Mestizo...in the costume itself as she opened it up onstage. It was as if she was the Queen of all of Ecuador, as seen though this one stunning costume.
Score: 9.75
3. Miss Indonesia International Vania Fitryanti Herlambang--Designed by Jember Fashion Carnaval--an Indonesian costume design company--this costume depicts the Rumah Gadang (means "Big House"), a traditional home in the West Sumatra Province. The black, red and gold are colors of Marawa Minangkabau, symbolizing intellectual, braveness, and grace of Minang people. I thought this was a very impressive costume combining traditional aspects of Indonesian culture with a little bit of high fashion, with its luxe silk fabrication and dramatic pagoda-like shoulders and overskirt/cape.
Score: 9.40
4. Miss Mongolia International Munkchimeg Batjargal--This was a beautiful representation of traditional Mongolian costume here worn by Miss Mongolia International. I loved the strong red color, the fullness of the gown...the exaggerated blouson sleeves...and yes, the headdress. It was traditional but stunning!
Score: 9.30
5. Miss Costa Rica International Glennys Medina Segura--Another great example of a Pre-Columbian costume was this bright yellow-and-gold one worn by Miss Costa Rica International. The costume featured gold sequined "mermaid"-like shape with an over-the-top peacock feathered headdress and back, plus gold-and-pink crystal adornments. Everything about this screamed "Costa Rican Empress" ruling over a GOLD Empire!
Score: 9.25
6. Miss Venezuela International Mariem Velazco--Designed by Venezuelan designer Alejandro Fajardo, this gorgeous national costume worn by Miss Venezuela International ended up in my No. 6 spot. In case it wasn't obvious enough: The gown represents the National Flower of Venezuela, the Orchid. The design features a gorgeous off-the-shoulder black pleated drape and a fitted gown with side front slit covered in a degrade' of black-to-fuchsia-to-yellow sequins, representing the semiprecious stones found in the Amazon jungles of Venezuela. The orchid headdress adds the perfect costume exclamation point. This is a gown that if I saw at the Cannes Red Carpet, I would applaud!
Score: 9.20
7. Miss El Salvador International Ena Cea--Ena wore this marine-inspired costume which transformed the beauty into a sequined fish-scaled Mermaid Empress! The blue/silver/green sequins embellished the design creating an impacting figure onstage that was finished off with a majestic Pre-Columbian feathered headdress.
Score: 8.90
8. Miss Panama International Shirel Ortiz--Panama's Shirel Ortiz wore another one of my favorite Miss International 2018 National Costumes in this feathered Indigenous Queen-like costume. Paying homage to the gorgeous Molas--traditional art and textile from the Kuna tribe of the San Blas Islands in Panama this colorful design is joyous, spirited and quite impacting. Muy bien!
Score: 8.85
9. Miss Laos International Piyamarth Phounpaseuth--Traditional, gorgeous and stylish. Piyamarth represented her nation well in this beautiful costume featuring the lovely silks and gold adornments from her nation including the "Sinh" tube skirt and over-the-shoulder shawl.
Score: 8.50
10. Miss Sweden International Izabell Hahn--In the No. 10 spot of my Top Ten National Costumes of Miss International 2018, I wanted to put Miss Sweden International. This was the best one from the European contestants, showing a nod to the traditional costume with the impacting blue, white and yellow colors plus stunning sequined embroidery work. This was one of the nicest "Miss Sweden" costumes I have seen in a long time! Good work.
Score: 8.25
