I'm also outlining the first book in the X/Y series (Middle-Grade science fiction) and I am translating Book 1 of the Herbmaster Saga into English, (also MG). So many books to write, so little time! :-)(less)

The assignment was to write the first chapter in a chapter book, and I didn't even know what that was at the time.

I started writing and there he was: Konrad, sitting on a bench outside the principal's office, waiting for a reprimand. I had no idea what he had done to get there, or who he was, and when he found the sunglasses I had no idea what they could do.

This was the last assignment of the course, and then I went back to work and forgot all about writing for a while. But I kept thinking about this boy over the years, and about the sunglasses and the strange painting that I discovered on the wall when I wrote another few pages.

Eventually, I realized that I needed to find out what this story was about, and I applied for another writing course, using my first chapter as a sample of my work. The course was held at Astrid Lindgren's childhood home Näs in Vimmerby, and the atmosphere there along with the other participants' confidence in my writing (because I didn't have any myself) were essential in the writing of this book. That place is magic, and if you ever get a chance to go there, take it!(less)

Topics Mentioning This Author

Kate Atkinson
“She should have done science, not spent all her time with her head in novels. Novels gave you a completely false idea about life, they told lies and they implied there were endings when in reality there were no endings, everything just went on and on and on.”
Kate Atkinson, Case Histories

Kate Atkinson
“I am mad, I think. I am mad therefore I think. I am mad therefore I think I am.”
Kate Atkinson, Human Croquet

Ralph Waldo Emerson
“Write it on your heart
that every day is the best day in the year.
He is rich who owns the day, and no one owns the day
who allows it to be invaded with fret and anxiety.

Finish every day and be done with it.
You have done what you could.
Some blunders and absurdities, no doubt crept in.
Forget them as soon as you can, tomorrow is a new day;
begin it well and serenely, with too high a spirit
to be cumbered with your old nonsense.

This new day is too dear,
with its hopes and invitations,
to waste a moment on the yesterdays.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson, Collected Poems and Translations

Alain de Botton
“To one's enemies: "I hate myself more than you ever could.”
Alain de Botton

Alain de Botton
“There's a whole category of people who miss out by not allowing themselves to be weird enough.”
Alain de Botton
