Mind Control Secrets from “Genesis Girl”
Wouldn’t it be fun to possess the ability to make other people do what you want? In Genesis Girl Blanca doesn’t have magic powers, but she is an expert at influencing other people’s behavior. That’s one of the qualities that make Blanca and her Vestal brethren special. They are masters of mind control.
I based some of the Vestal tactics on ideas first explored in a famous book from 1936 called How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. I also used my experience as a Psychology major at Stanford University. The crazy truth is that the tricks Blanca uses are based on real psychology. If you learn them, you might be able to control other people’s behavior too.
Here are ten easy tips straight from Genesis Girl:
1. Call people by name. This establishes intimacy and a friendly relationship.
2. Make other people feel important. Stroke their egos.
3. Stand up straight. Taller people statistically do better, that might be why we have so many tall presidents.
4. Appearances matter. Pretty people are usually assumed to be smarter and more capable.
5. Look competent because this makes you harder to argue with.
6. Get your target to talk about himself and data-mine him for information.
7. Clarifying questions are your friends. They never appear suspicious and can diffuse tense situations.
8. Make the other person think that what you want, is what he wants, and that it was his idea in the first place.
9. Get someone to agree with you by starting with the yes-yes. Ask the person two questions you know they will say yes too, and then ask the person what you really want.
10. When all else fails smiles. Nobody can argue with a smile.
That was a quick and dirty lesson in Mind Control 101. Hopefully you don’t use your newfound prowess for evil purposes. But the next time you want your boyfriend to be okay with you both going to a chick-flick, take a page from Blanca, and grin.

Beyond the Rising Tide
by Sarah Beard
Genre: YA Speculative Romance
Release Date: June 14th 2016
Sweetwater Books
Kai met Avery only once--in the moment he died saving her life. Now when he's not using his new healing powers to help people, he watches helplessly as Avery's life is unraveled by his death. To help her, he risks everything by breaking the rules, dangerously blurring the barriers between life and death.

EXCERPT (Avery's point-of-view):
My mind retraces the past few months, all the conversations Tyler and I have had, the words we’ve said and haven’t said, all stemming from one incident, one day. And then I’m thrown back to that afternoon, back into the ocean and the cold, roiling waves. I feel them around me, tossing me this way and that, pounding over my head like a stampede of wild horses. I feel the salt stinging my eyes and see the abyss below me in the moment I dove under to find the boy. I saw him there, motionless and suspended in the deep, just out of reach.
Just out of reach.
My face feels hot, and I can’t breathe. But I keep my panic cloaked beneath my skin. A violent earthquake rattles my insides, but I tense my muscles, holding it in, restraining it, refusing to let it show. I dig my nails into my arm, anchoring them there, anchoring me into stillness, and I focus all my attention on the present physical pain in my arm.
Kai’s hand reaches for mine. His touch stills my insides, draws out the tremors as though they’re water and he’s a sponge.

Summary:
Kiki Nichols might not survive music camp.
She’s put her TV-loving, nerdy self aside for one summer to prove she’s got what it takes: she can be cool enough to make friends, she can earn that music scholarship, and she can get into Krause University’s music program.
Except camp has rigid conduct rules—which means her thrilling late-night jam session with the hot drummer can’t happen again, even though they love all the same TV shows, and fifteen minutes making music with him meant more than every aria she’s ever sung.
But when someone starts snitching on rule breakers and getting them kicked out, music camp turns into survival of the fittest. If Kiki’s going to get that scholarship, her chance to make true friends—and her chance with the drummer guy—might cost her the future she wants more than anything.

EXCERPT
Excerpt:
From the music app on my phone, Ani DiFranco belts out a choice insult just as Brie bursts through my dorm room door, crosses the room, and plops a giant cardboard box on the other bed.
“I guess we’re roommates,” she says. There were a bunch of boxes in the room when I arrived, and I wondered who they belonged to. I suppose that mystery is solved.
I scramble to stop Ani from singing anything else we both might regret later and I look up just in time to see Seth Banks crossing the threshold into my dorm room, carrying another larger, heavier box over to Brie’s side.
“Hi,” he says. “Kiki, right?” He knows my name. Seth Banks somehow knows my name.
I nod, and sneak a glance at the mirror on the wall next to my bed, assessing myself against the two model-caliber people in my dorm room. I’m still wearing the cat dress. My frizzy hair is up in a messy bun, but the effect actually works with my blue-plastic glasses. I look eccentric, but artsy, which may not be the best look of all time but it is, in fact, a look.
(You’re probably wondering who my celebrity twin is. Well, there aren’t a lot of women in pop culture who have my body type, i.e. dumpy. I’m too fat to be thin and too thin to be fat. Head-wise, I have the glasses and mouse-like features of Mary Katherine Gallagher from Saturday Night Live with hair like Hermione before someone gave her hot oil help between the second and third movies.)
Brie cocks an eyebrow at me and tucks her bottom lip under her top teeth as she picks up my backpack and drops it on the ground with a perfunctory thud. I had tossed it onto the blue papa-san chair in the middle of our room after I got back from the auditions. “That’s my chair,” she says. “My. Chair.” And then she proceeds to place a six-pack of Diet Coke into the fridge—My. Fridge.—because apparently that’s how fairness works.

Why I write YA fantasy
Many people have asked me why I write YA, and more specifically why YA fantasy verses something like literary or contemporary fiction. Some believe that YA authors write YA because it’s easier to write than adult fiction. Young adults are easy to understand. They all have the same problems, the same school issues, the same relationship problems. All they do is study, party, make out, do drugs. All the stories are the same self-absorbed plots, right?
Wrong!
While teens do go through all of these things, it doesn’t mean that they are easy to figure out. Teens are complicated, maybe even more so than adults. They are leaving behind the part of them that always relied on adults to guide them, and trying to find ways how to guide themselves. Yes, they make bad decisions. They also make some pretty darn good ones. Their emotions do teeter on the edge of sanity and crazy. They haven’t learned the lessons of life that teach how to control them or understand them. They are still finding their way in a vast and uncertain world. They want to be their own trail blazers. They’re scared, excited, bold, timid, but they are also amazing, energetic, explorative, resilient, sensitive, kind, smart, full of ideas and ingenuity.
Writing for them is not easy.
They can see through stupidity and falseness. They know when an author is talking down to them, whether in real life or in books. Yes, teens make mistakes. They also like seeing characters in books overcome those same mistakes in ways they might overcome them in “real life”. Teens are not going to react the same way as adults. They aren’t going to use the same language as adults. I think authors who try to push this or try to teach lessons in their books run the risk of losing their young readers. Teens don’t want to be preached to. They want guidance. They want to discover.
Writing YA fantasy to me takes all of this to a different level. No, there are no such things as dragons, but that doesn’t mean teens don’t love fighting off dangerous and formidable foes. Give them a fantastical element and teens feel ‘safe’ in fighting those demons, whether mythical creatures or magical beings. I think every teen can relate to characters like Snape and Professor Umbridge. If only magic were real, right?
I also think writing fantasy opens up whole new worlds that stir the imagination. Teens begin to lose their imagination as they get older. They are told to keep their feet on the ground and their heads out of the clouds. I disagree. More teens need to take flight. More teens need to be who and what they are, reach for the stars. They, just like adults, need a place where they can go to escape the complexities of life. They need to be able to ride a Pegasus. Traverse rainbows. Befriend a pixie or a gnome. Slay sea monsters. Fall in love with a mermaid. Join forces with Greek gods. The sky and the imagination are limitless. I like providing that. I like shattering the ceiling. I like giving teens the wings to fly. That’s why I write YA fantasy. Now go break some barriers.

KISSES ON A PAPER AIRPLANE by Sarah Vance Tompkins

Wanna Kiss A Pop Star?
by Sarah Vance-Tompkins
Okay. I admit it.
When I was younger there might've been a pop star or two I would've liked to smooch, but now that I'm married to the man of my dreams, those days are far behind me.
Except.
My husband works in the music business and he is frequently invited by record label executives to go to concerts. Now and then I get to tag along as his 'Plus One.' It's always fun to see how things work behind the scenes.
It gets even better when I get to rub shoulders with my favorites. I can't begin to tell you how excited I was to get to see Lady Antebellum at the Troubadour. It seemed like the show had just ended when Charles Kelley was standing next to me. He was so (very) tall and (very) handsome, all I could think to say to him (over and over, I'm afraid) was "I love you."

I think my face says it all.
My biggest thrill (so far) was going backstage to meet Ed Sheeran. I was the oldest girl in the line outside his dressing room. Fortunately, Ed was very gracious. He even made a fuss over the lighting when it came to taking the backstage pic. But I thing I love the most about the photo is my husband's face beaming in the background. That is true love, and the reason I write romance.

Drama student Hannah Evans isn't kissing any frogs on her path to find Prince Charming. She's determined to share the perfect first kiss -- with the perfect boy -- in the perfect place -- or she's not kissing at all. When Hannah meets a cute ginger-haired boy in first class lounge in the London airport, she knows he's 'The One.'
Pop star Theo Callahan is on the road to get as far away as possible from his back-stabbing best friend, and his supermodel girlfriend who broke his heart. Until one shy smile from Hannah has him rethinking all of his travel plans.
Theo is smitten, but he's worried she's just a groupie in search of the ultimate selfie. Can Theo learn to trust Hannah in time to share one perfect first kiss, or will Hannah be forced to kiss a frog?

Advanced Praise:
“A smart, sexy, and fast-paced
story with a swoon-worthy love interest. Tone Deaf will be
music to your ears.” —Jessica Taylor, author of Wandering Wild
“Much like its hero, Tone Deaf’s flashy, rock-star exterior
surrounds a sweet, vulnerable soul that made it impossible to put down. It is
equal parts fun and touching, with a dash of humor and lot of heart. The
friendships, as well as the romance, have intense, believable chemistry, and
with a giant pitbull named Cuddles thrown in the mix, I was in love!” —Laura
Lee Anderson, author of Song of Summer
“Olivia Rivers has hit all the right notes with Tone Deaf.” —A. R.
Kahler, author of Pale Queen Rising and Shades of
Darkness
“The portrayal of Ali as Deaf is authentic and modern. She loves rock concerts
for the vibrations and sensory pull of the crowd. She prefers to sign but exasperatedly
reads the lips of people who talk fast or turn away as they talk. As Ali, Jace,
and the band tour amid Amber alerts, surprising emotional connections are
painfully forged and will resonate with young survivors of abuse, especially as
Ali takes small steps toward recovery. VERDICT This gripping
tale of survival has great appeal due to the parallel boy/girl narrative
structure, the portrayal of a Deaf character at home in the realm of music and
songwriting, and the overall pop culture tenor.” –School Library
